Fallout 76 Best Energy Weapons 2026: Tier List and Perks

Quick answer: In Season 26 "Beware the Blood Moon!" the strongest energy weapons in Fallout 76 are the Enclave Plasma Rifle (best all-round, 57 physical + 57 energy at its top damage tier), the Plasma Caster (best heavy gun, 103 physical + 103 energy = 206 combined base damage), and the Tesla Rifle (best crowd clear, 121 energy damage with a chaining arc). Every one of them scales off Science!, the single-rank Intelligence perk that gives +15.92% energy damage at INT 10, +26.33% at INT 20 and +35.0% at INT 30. The fastest route into the tier is Gold Bullion: Plasma Caster and Gauss Minigun plans both cost 750 Gold Bullion, or 563 when Minerva has them in rotation.

Energy weapons in Fallout 76 are their own damage ecosystem. They do not care about your ballistic perks, they rarely use the ammo you already have stacked in your stash, and the single perk card that powers all of them was quietly rebuilt in Patch 1.7.20.12 — which is why half the guides still floating around the internet print numbers that no longer exist in the game.

This guide ranks the energy weapons that are actually worth building around as of The Slasher (Update 28), live since September 15, 2026, with verified damage values, the correct ammo for each gun, the perk lines that scale them, and exactly where each plan comes from.

What counts as an energy weapon in Fallout 76?

An energy weapon is any weapon carrying the Energy keyword on its stat card. That keyword — not the weapon's name, and not how futuristic it looks — is what makes the Science! perk apply.

Three things trip players up constantly:

  • Energy is a damage type, not a weapon class. A gun can be a heavy gun and an energy weapon at the same time. The Plasma Caster scales off Bullet Storm (Strength) and Science! (Intelligence) simultaneously, and so does the Gauss Minigun — fallout.wiki lists the Gauss Minigun's keywords as "Heavy gun · Automatic · Ballistic · Energy · Minigun."
  • The receiver decides your perk line, not the weapon. An automatic receiver puts a weapon into the Commando family. A non-automatic one puts it in the Rifleman family. The gun itself does not change, but your entire perk loadout does.
  • Several energy weapons deal split damage. The Enclave Plasma Rifle and the Plasma Caster both deal physical and energy damage in the same shot, which means armour-piercing effects and Science! both contribute to the final number.

Enclave Plasma Rifle — the best energy weapon overall

The Enclave Plasma Rifle is the default answer for most players because it is genuinely two weapons in one chassis. In its standard rifle configuration it deals 57 physical and 57 energy damage at its top damage tier (fallout.wiki), fed by Plasma Cartridges, and it is the most flexible energy platform in the game.

The base weapon comes from the MODUS Armory terminal in The Whitespring Bunker, which requires finishing the Bunker Buster main quest first. That is the single most important unlock for any energy build — it gates the whole Enclave plasma family.

Where it gets interesting is the Aligned Flamer Barrel, which converts the rifle into the Enclave Plasma Flamer. That barrel is a loose mod only — it cannot be crafted. It drops from Enclave and Sigma soldiers at Glassed Cavern, the Abandoned Waste Dump, and select Daily Ops. Attach it at any weapons workbench.

One trap worth repeating: in flamer configuration the weapon counts as Commando, not Rifleman. Bethesda reclassified flamer barrels in an October 2023 patch, and NukaKnights confirmed the change at the time: "Flamer Barrels now count towards the Commando Perks." Guides written before that still hand you Rifleman cards, and they will cost you 60% weapon damage.

Plasma Caster — the best heavy energy weapon

The Plasma Caster is the heaviest hitter in the energy category: 103 physical + 103 energy = 206 combined base damage at level 50, per fallout.wiki. Because it carries both damage types, it benefits from the Strength heavy-gun perks and from Science! at the same time.

Its ammo is Plasma Cartridges, and with the Prime Capacitor mod it converts to Ultracite Plasma Cartridges — superior damage against Scorchbeasts and Scorched, with killed enemies dropping the ammo back to you. Do not confuse these with Plasma Cores; those are a different gun's ammo entirely.

The plan costs 750 Gold Bullion from Reginald Stone (Regs) at Vault 79, after the Wastelanders questline. When Minerva has it in her rotating stock, the same plan drops to 563 Gold Bullion — a 187 Gold Bullion discount that is worth waiting a rotation for.

The Slasher also fixed a long-standing bug that directly affects this weapon class. Bethesda's release notes state: "Fixed an issue where Bullet Storm was not counting up correctly for charging reload style weapons, such as the Assaultron Head." If you shelved a charging-reload energy heavy before September 15, it is worth re-rolling your build around it now.

Why Holy Fire is not on this list

Holy Fire gets recommended in almost every "best energy weapons" thread, and it does not belong there. It deals fire damage, runs on Fuel, and scales off Heavy Gunner (Strength) plus Pyromaniac (Intelligence) — Science! does nothing for it, because it does not carry the Energy keyword.

That distinction matters because it shares no perk overlap with the Enclave Plasma Flamer, despite both being flame-shaped weapons. Building one and expecting the other to work is one of the most common loadout mistakes in the game. Holy Fire is an excellent boss-melting weapon, and it drops from the Beasts of Burden seasonal event at Sacramental Glade, Cranberry Bog — it is just a Pyromaniac weapon, not an energy weapon, and it needs its own build.

Gauss Minigun — the dual-scaling sleeper

Gatling Plasma heavy weapon render from Fallout 76

The Gauss Minigun deals 59 base damage per shot plus 15% area damage, fires at 2.2 attacks per second after a 1.0 second spin-up, and loses 50% of its damage past medium range. It is loud enough to break stealth instantly, so it is a pure face-tank weapon.

Its real strength is triple scaling: Science! applies to the energy component, Demolition Expert boosts the per-shot area explosion, and the Strength heavy-gun line covers the rest. Ammo is 2mm EM Cartridges, upgraded to Ultracite 2mm EM with a Prime Capacitor so that killed enemies refill you.

The plan is 750 Gold Bullion from Mortimer at The Crater, which requires max Raiders reputation — not from Regs at Vault 79. Minerva stocks it at 563 Gold Bullion.

With the Furious legendary prefix it also abuses the Onslaught system: +5% damage per stack and a stack cap raised by 9, for up to +45%. At 2.2 shots per second it rebuilds those stacks faster than almost anything else, which is why the community prefers Furious over the higher-per-stack Pounder's here.

Tesla Rifle — the crowd-clear specialist

The Tesla Rifle deals 121 energy damage at its top damage tier on Fusion Cells, with a range of 186. What makes it worth a slot is the arc: it "fires an electrical discharge that arcs between targets," and that arc carries 100% of the direct impact damage when chaining from NPCs. In a packed Daily Op or a dense event, that is effectively free multi-target damage.

The plan is sold by Vendor Bot Phoenix at Watoga Shopping Plaza (Brotherhood of Steel vendor), which makes it by far the cheapest entry point on this list — no Gold Bullion, no raid, no event RNG.

Gatling Plasma and Laser Rifle — the budget tier

The Gatling Plasma deals 28 physical + 28 energy at its top damage tier with a range of 169, and it is the one gun here that runs on Plasma Cores, not cartridges. The plan comes from the MODUS armory terminal at The Whitespring Bunker, from Government Aid Drops at higher levels, or from Picklock 2 safes in The Mire.

The standard Laser Rifle lands at 64 energy damage at its top tier with a range of 145 on Fusion Cells, with a 30-round magazine. It is outclassed by everything above it, but it is the weapon almost every account already owns, it costs nothing to build, and it is a perfectly good place to test an energy perk loadout before you commit Gold Bullion to a Plasma Caster.

What perks do energy weapons use in Fallout 76?

Science! is the universal energy multiplier, and it is the single most misreported perk in the game. The old two-rank card that gave a flat +5% / +10% energy damage was replaced in Patch 1.7.20.12. The current version is a single-rank card that scales with your Intelligence:

IntelligenceScience! energy damage bonus
INT 10+15.92%
INT 20+26.33%
INT 30+35.0%

Source: fallout.wiki. If a guide still quotes +5% / +10%, it predates the rework and every number downstream of it is wrong.

Around Science!, your weapon-class line does the heavy lifting:

  • Commando / Expert Commando / Master Commando (Agility, 3 ranks each) = +60% automatic weapon damage. This is the line for the Enclave Plasma Flamer and any automatic energy rifle.
  • Rifleman family (Perception) for non-automatic receivers.
  • Heavy Gunner / Expert / Master (Strength, 3 ranks each) = +60% heavy weapon damage, for the Plasma Caster, Gauss Minigun and Gatling Plasma.
  • Demolition Expert (Intelligence) for anything with area damage, which on this list means the Gauss Minigun.
  • Pyromaniac (Intelligence, single rank, INT-scaling) — relevant only if you also run Holy Fire, which is a fire weapon rather than an energy one.

Two placement errors show up in nearly every community build list. Stabilized is a Strength perk, not Intelligence — it gives VATS accuracy for heavy guns and ignores a percentage of enemy armour while in Power Armor. And "Nuclear Physicist" does not exist in Fallout 76; the perk people mean is Power User (Intelligence), whose rank 3 doubles Fusion Core duration. It does not triple it.

If you run a low-health setup, note that Bloodied caps at roughly +95% damage near 1 HP, not the +130% that gets repeated in build videos, and Nerd Rage rank 3 gives +40% damage and 40 damage resistance as a flat number, not a percentage.

Which ammo should an energy build stockpile?

Energy ammo is the real cost of the archetype, and it splits four ways:

  • Plasma Cartridge — Enclave Plasma Rifle, Enclave Plasma Flamer, Plasma Caster.
  • Plasma Core — Gatling Plasma only.
  • Fusion Cell — Tesla Rifle, Laser Rifle.
  • 2mm EM Cartridge — Gauss Minigun, and the rest of the Gauss family.

The fix for all of them is the Prime Capacitor mod, which converts your weapon to the Ultracite version of its ammo and makes killed enemies drop that ammo for you. On a Plasma Caster or Gauss Minigun that turns a build which eats 2,000 rounds an evening into one that roughly sustains itself. The Prime plans come from The Whitespring Bunker MODUS armory terminal or from player vendors.

The Ultracite variants also hit harder against Scorchbeasts and the Scorched, which is exactly the content where energy builds spend most of their time.

How do you get energy weapon plans fastest?

Gold Bullion is the bottleneck, not caps. The two premium plans both sit at 750 Gold Bullion, and Minerva's rotating stock cuts that to 563. The weekly Gold Bullion ceiling is the pacing mechanic for the entire energy archetype, so decide which gun you want before you start spending.

The free or near-free routes, in order of how quickly they pay off:

  • Tesla Rifle — buy the plan from Vendor Bot Phoenix at Watoga Shopping Plaza. No faction grind.
  • Enclave Plasma Rifle — finish Bunker Buster, then buy from the MODUS Armory terminal.
  • Gatling Plasma — MODUS armory terminal, Government Aid Drops, or Picklock 2 safes in The Mire.
  • Plasma Caster / Gauss Minigun — Gold Bullion, or wait for Minerva.

If you are still working up to that, our Gold Bullion farming guide covers how to hit the weekly cap, and the best public events guide covers the events that feed Treasury Notes.

FAQ

What is the best energy weapon in Fallout 76? For an all-round build it is the Enclave Plasma Rifle, which deals 57 physical plus 57 energy damage at its top damage tier and converts into the Enclave Plasma Flamer with an Aligned Flamer Barrel. If you specifically want raw numbers on a heavy gun, the Plasma Caster's 206 combined base damage is the highest on this list.

What are the best perks for energy weapons in Fallout 76? Science! is mandatory on every energy build — it is a single-rank Intelligence-scaling card worth +15.92% energy damage at INT 10 and +35.0% at INT 30. Stack it with your receiver's weapon line: Commando for automatic, Rifleman for non-automatic, or the Heavy Gunner family for the Plasma Caster, Gauss Minigun and Gatling Plasma.

What is the best heavy energy weapon in Fallout 76? The Plasma Caster, at 103 physical + 103 energy damage. The Gauss Minigun is the close second because it scales off Science!, Demolition Expert and the Strength heavy-gun line at once, but its damage drops 50% past medium range.

Does Science! still give a flat damage bonus? No. The two-rank card that gave a flat +5% and +10% was replaced in Patch 1.7.20.12. The current Science! is a single-rank perk that scales with Intelligence, so your bonus depends entirely on how much INT you run.

What ammo does the Plasma Caster use? Plasma Cartridges, and Ultracite Plasma Cartridges once you fit a Prime Capacitor. It does not use Plasma Cores — those belong to the Gatling Plasma.

Is the Tesla Rifle still worth using in 2026? Yes, for crowd clear. Its arc carries 100% of the direct impact damage when chaining between NPCs, and the plan is a straightforward vendor purchase from Vendor Bot Phoenix at Watoga Shopping Plaza rather than a Gold Bullion sink.
