Riven Splicers are a brand-new Warframe resource that lets you fuse two of a Riven Mod's traits into a single spliced trait pulled from a special pool — and as of Update 44.1.0: The Icebind (October 7, 2026), they are live. The catch is that you can only earn them one way: by clearing The Icebind, Warframe's new six-player Cryobell mission on Yuvan Peak. This guide covers exactly how to unlock The Icebind, how each clear pays out a guaranteed Riven Splicer, and how to use that Splicer in your Orbiter without wrecking a good Riven.
Quick answer: Riven Splicers drop guaranteed, one per clear of The Icebind (six-player Cryobell mode at Yuvan Peak), capped at three clears per week. You spend a Splicer in the Mod Segment on your Orbiter: pick a Riven Mod with a valid trait combination, and it merges two of that Riven's traits into one new spliced trait. The spliced trait is locked by default, does not increase the Riven's Kuva reroll cost, and freezes the Riven's positive/negative count until you manually unlock it. This applies to Update 44.1 (The Icebind), live on PC since October 7, 2026.
What is a Riven Splicer?
A Riven Splicer is a consumable resource introduced in Update 44.1. Its in-game description reads: "Used in the Mod Workbench to splice Riven traits into a new trait from a special pool of possibilities." In plain terms, it is the currency that powers Riven Splicing — a system that lets you take two existing stats on one of your Riven Mods and merge them into a single, new spliced trait that you could not otherwise roll.
This is the biggest change to the decade-old Riven system in years. Before Update 44.1, your only tool for shaping a Riven was Kuva: you rerolled ("cycled") the mod and prayed the RNG gave you the stats you wanted. Riven Splicing adds a deliberate, non-random way to create specific trait combinations — and it pairs with a second new feature, Trait Locking, that launched alongside it. One long-time player on r/Warframe summed up the mood: "Finally get to interact with and enjoy the riven system, only took 10 years."
Two things to be clear about up front:
- Splicers are not tradeable, and they are not sold for Platinum. You earn them by playing The Icebind. There is no shop stock and no DE storefront entry for them.
- Splicing is a manual choice, not an automatic upgrade. The game does not auto-merge your traits. You have to earn a Splicer and choose to combine them.
How to get Riven Splicers in Warframe
There is exactly one source: The Icebind. Every successful Icebind clear hands every squad member one guaranteed Riven Splicer on completion, separate from the chest reward roll. That makes the real question "how do I unlock and run The Icebind?" — so here is the full path.
Unlock requirements for The Icebind
The Icebind is endgame content. To access it from Yuvan Peak, DE's Update 44.1.0 patch notes list these hard prerequisites:
- Completed both the Angels of the Zariman and Whispers in the Walls quests.
- Unlocked (but not necessarily completed) either Elite Temporal Archimedea or Elite Deep Archimedea.
There is no Mastery Rank gate on the mode itself. If you have those quests done and Elite Archimedea unlocked, you can walk in.
Starting a run
- Travel to Yuvan Peak on Earth (the relay added with Update 44).
- Claim your Cryobells from the ice pillar atop Yuvan Peak. Three Cryobells form each weekly reset (Sunday, midnight UTC), and you can stockpile up to six if you skip a week.
- Talk to Cephalon Melica and select "Ring a Cryobell."
- Build a squad of exactly six Tenno, with no duplicate Warframes — there is no public matchmaking at launch, so the host invites a premade group.
- Each player offers one Cryobell. Every bell is a randomized mission with its own mission type, planet, enemy faction, and Binds (modifiers). The squad gets a 60-second vote on which bell to ring; the host breaks ties, and no votes means a random pick.
- Clear the main objective and extract. A Cryobell is only spent when you successfully extract — a failed run burns nothing and does not count against your weekly limit.
What each clear pays
On extraction you are transported to Melica's Glacial Laboratory, where you open your earned keys. Every clear guarantees:
- One Riven Splicer (the whole point of the farm).
- One Crested Frozen Key, which opens a Crested Frozen Chest at the center of the map.
- A guaranteed Kuva roll from that chest: 7,500 / 17,500 / 100,000 Kuva at roughly 69% / 30% / 1% per DE's drop table.
Each Squad Side Objective you complete (up to three per mission — Lockbox, Cryothermia, Indomitable Ice, Entropy Orb, Signal Chain) adds a Frozen Key for a Frozen Chest on the map's outer edge, with its own Kuva roll and loot.
| The Icebind at a glance | Detail |
|---|---|
| Players | Exactly 6, no duplicate Warframes |
| Matchmaking | None at launch — host invites a premade squad |
| Enemy level | 999+ (health/shields/armor +200%, +100% per squad member, up to 800%) |
| Weekly limit | 3 clears per week; stockpile up to 6 Cryobells |
| Guaranteed per clear | 1 Riven Splicer + 1 Crested Frozen Key (+ Kuva roll) |
| Per side objective | 1 Frozen Key (up to 3) |
| Failed run | Spends nothing, does not count toward the weekly 3 |
The Crested Frozen Chest reward pool also includes Archon Shards (11.67% each for Azure/Crimson/Amber), Omni Forma (10%), a Forma Bundle (10%), Riven Transmuter (5%), a Veiled Riven Cipher (5%), and weapon-category Riven Mods. Note those percentages are from DE's published drop tables and can change on any hotfix — always confirm current rates on warframe.com/droptables before treating them as fixed.
A note on Narin: The Icebind does not drop Narin's parts. The 66th Warframe is still farmed with Entropic Kuva from Zariman missions. The Icebind is a Riven-and-Kuva engine, not a frame farm.
How to use a Riven Splicer (Riven Splicing step by step)
Once you have a Splicer, splicing happens on your Orbiter, not in The Icebind. Per DE, Riven Splicers "can be utilized via the Mod Segment in your Orbiter and allow you to combine two Riven traits into a new one from a special pool of possibilities."
- On your Orbiter, open the Mod Segment and go to the Riven section of the Mod menu.
- Select "Riven Splicing." A menu appears showing all owned Riven Mods that have a valid trait combination — Rivens with no eligible pair simply won't be selectable.
- Pick the Riven you want to modify, then choose the two traits to merge. The game shows you the resulting spliced trait drawn from the pool for that weapon category.
- Spend the Splicer to confirm the splice.
What splicing actually does to your Riven
This is the part players get wrong, so read carefully. Per DE's Update 44 documentation:
- The spliced trait is locked by default.
- Unlike a normally locked trait (which doubles the Riven's Kuva cycle cost), a spliced trait does not increase the Kuva cost to reroll.
- The splice locks the number of positives and negatives on the Riven — no matter how many times you reroll it afterward — unless you manually unlock the spliced trait and roll over it.
In practice, splicing lets you "freeze" a desirable stat shape onto a Riven and keep rerolling the other stats for better values, without paying the doubled-Kuva penalty that normal trait locking charges. That is a meaningful quality-of-life win for anyone chasing a god-roll.
A reality check from the community, though: the pool of spliced traits is weapon-category dependent and not uniformly strong. A playtester on DE's own Dev Workshop pushed back on the melee pool specifically — "The melee spliced traits are very underwhelming, why would anybody want 'parry angle' as a spliced trait." Check the available pool for your weapon type before you spend a hard-earned Splicer; the combination that helps a rifle build may be worthless on a melee Riven.
Trait Locking vs Riven Splicing — don't confuse them
Update 44 shipped two new Riven features at once, and they are easy to mix up:
Trait Locking? Lets you lock an existing trait so it survives rerolls. The cost: that Riven's Kuva cycle price is doubled for each locked trait (DE's own example shows a Riven whose cycle cost rose to 7,000 Kuva because of one locked Critical Chance trait). Use it when you have one perfect stat and want to gamble the rest.
Riven Splicing? Uses a Riven Splicer (from The Icebind) to merge two traits into one new spliced trait. The spliced trait is locked but does not raise the Kuva cost. Use it when you want a specific combined effect and the pool offers it.
They stack: you can run a Riven that has both manually locked traits (doubled cost) and a spliced trait (no added cost). Knowing which lever you're pulling is the difference between a cheap god-roll and a Kuva sink.
Watch out for Riven Splicing scams
The moment Splicers went live, the community flagged a new scam vector — and it is worth a warning in any guide. Because splicing happens on your own Orbiter and requires a Splicer, some players are already advertising "Riven splicing services," asking you to hand over your Riven and trusting them to splice and return it. On r/Warframe, a thread warning about exactly this hit 50+ upvotes within an hour of the update, with one player admitting "I would totally fall for one of these scams and be out a riven for a good weapon."
Treat this like any trade-adjacent scam:
- You never need to give your Riven to anyone to splice it. Splicing is a solo action in your own Mod Segment.
- DE does not reverse trades or scams — their stated policy is that each player is responsible for their own trades.
- If someone offers a paid splicing "service," report them. DE's EULA prohibits selling services around the game, and DE support does not play games with scammers.

Is Riven Splicing worth farming for?
For most players, yes — but with realistic expectations. The farm is gated to three clears a week, so you accumulate Splicers slowly, and the strongest use is on Rivens for weapons you actually main. If you're still building toward endgame, your time is better spent on the Warframe weapons tier list and on finishing the quests that unlock The Icebind in the first place. Splicing is a min-maxing tool for Rivens you already care about, not an early-game priority.
Because The Icebind is a six-player, no-matchmaking, level-999 mode, the practical bottleneck for most Tenno isn't the Splicer — it's assembling a competent premade squad of six different frames. If you're farming the new frame instead, our how to get Narin guide covers the Entropic Kuva route, since The Icebind won't help there.
FAQ
What are Riven Splicers in Warframe? Riven Splicers are a resource added in Update 44.1.0 (October 7, 2026) that you spend in the Mod Segment to combine two of a Riven Mod's traits into a single new "spliced" trait from a special pool. They are the currency behind the new Riven Splicing system.
How do you get Riven Splicers? You earn one guaranteed Riven Splicer for every successful clear of The Icebind, the new six-player Cryobell mission at Yuvan Peak. It is the only source — Splicers are not tradeable and are not sold for Platinum. The Icebind is capped at three clears per week.
How do you use a Riven Splicer? On your Orbiter, open the Mod Segment, go to the Riven section, and select "Riven Splicing." Pick a Riven Mod with a valid trait combination, choose the two traits to merge, and spend the Splicer to create the spliced trait.
Does splicing a Riven increase its Kuva cost? No. A spliced trait is locked by default but, unlike a normally locked trait (which doubles the Kuva cycle cost), it does not increase the Riven's reroll cost. It does lock the number of positives and negatives until you manually unlock the spliced trait.
What are the requirements to access The Icebind? You must have completed the Angels of the Zariman and Whispers in the Walls quests, and have unlocked (not necessarily completed) either Elite Temporal Archimedea or Elite Deep Archimedea. There is no Mastery Rank requirement for the mode itself.
Does The Icebind drop Narin? No. The Icebind rewards Riven Splicers, Kuva, Archon Shards, Forma and Riven Mods. Narin's parts come from Entropic Kuva earned in Zariman missions, not from this mode.
Can I buy Riven Splicers or pay someone to splice my Riven? No. Splicers are earned only in The Icebind, and splicing is a solo action in your own Orbiter — you never need to give your Riven to anyone. Anyone offering a paid "splicing service" is running a scam; report them, as DE does not reverse scams.
