The Great Vault is the single most important gearing decision you make every week in WoW Midnight Season 2 — and in Patch 12.1 it changed enough that last-season habits will actively cost you item levels. The short version: your vault is only as strong as your highest completions, the raid row now pays out a full difficulty tier higher than the content you cleared, and only two of the three rows can hand you Myth-track gear. Get the thresholds wrong and you leave a 318 upgrade sitting in the chest.
This guide breaks down every row, every threshold, the exact item level each slot rewards, and the one question that actually matters for your time: is it faster to grind the vault yourself, or to boost the completions that fill it?

World of Warcraft: Midnight - Mythic+ Keys

Quick Answer (TL;DR)
- The Great Vault has 3 rows — Raid, Mythic+ (Dungeons), and World (Delves/Prey) — each with up to 3 reward slots. On reset you pick exactly one item from the nine possible options.
- Row thresholds: Raid = 2 / 4 / 6 bosses; Mythic+ = 1 / 4 / 8 keys; World = 2 / 4 / 8 Delves/Prey/world activities.
- Highest Mythic+ vault reward: Myth 1/6, item level 318, unlocked at +10 and above. End-of-dungeon loot caps at 311, so the vault is your only non-Bonus-Roll source of Myth-track dungeon gear.
- Highest Delve/World vault reward: Hero 1/6, item level 305 (Delve Tier 8 or Prey Nightmare). The World row cannot give Myth-track loot.
- S2 raid buff: each raid slot now rewards an item one difficulty above the bosses you killed — 2 Heroic bosses = a Myth 1/6 (318) vault item. Only Mythic raiding gives max item level.
- Is a boost worth it? If you want all three rows at Myth/Hero track without the weekly time sink, the fast path is +10 keys and Heroic+ Venomous Abyss clears — exactly what a Keystone Master carry or raid boost delivers.
Season 2 went live Tuesday, August 18, 2026; per Blizzard's official schedule, "Great Vault Season 2 gear becomes available" that week, after credit began accruing during the Patch 12.1 prep week on August 11 (source: news.blizzard.com).
How does the Great Vault work in Season 2?
The Great Vault sits in your faction's main hub and rewards you once per weekly reset for the content you completed the previous week. It's split into three activity rows, and each row unlocks progressively:
- Complete the lower threshold → the first slot in that row unlocks.
- Complete the middle threshold → a second slot.
- Complete the top threshold → all three slots.
At reset you open the vault and see up to nine item options. You choose one. The rest disappear until the following week, so the goal every week is simple: make each unlocked slot as high an item level as possible, because you only get to keep one.
Two things changed for Patch 12.1 that you need to know before we get into the tables:
- A new alternative reward. According to Method's Season 2 vault breakdown, from your second vault of the season onward — and only once you have all three vault slots filled — you can choose Nebulous Voidcore (a Bonus Roll currency) instead of a gear item. That's a real option when nothing in the vault is an upgrade.
- The raid row got a major buff (covered below), while the highest absolute item level in the game is now locked firmly behind Mythic raiding.
Reality check from the community: even veteran players find the modern gearing web confusing. As one long-time r/wow poster put it, the systems "look super complicated but aren't" — the trick is realising every reward maps to the same four tracks (Veteran → Champion → Hero → Myth) you already know from raid difficulties.
What item level does the Mythic+ Great Vault reward in Season 2?
The Mythic+ row is the workhorse for most players. You need 1 key for the first slot, 4 for the second, and 8 for the third, and each slot's item level is set by the level of the key that fills it (the vault sorts your best runs, so your 8 highest timed-or-not keys of the week decide your three options).
| Keystone Level | Vault Reward Track | Item Level |
|---|---|---|
| +2 – +3 | Hero 1/6 | 305 |
| +4 – +5 | Hero 2/6 | 308 |
| +6 | Hero 3/6 | 311 |
| +7 – +9 | Hero 4/6 | 311 |
| +10 – +12+ | Myth 1/6 | 318 |
Two hard takeaways: the vault caps at Myth 1/6 (318) from +10 onward — there is no benefit to the item level of your vault from pushing past +10, only to your rating and portals. And because end-of-dungeon loot tops out at 311, the vault is the only way to earn Myth-track dungeon gear outside of a Bonus Roll. If you're chasing 318s, running enough +10s to fill all three slots is the entire game plan. If you want that guaranteed without the weekly key anxiety, a Keystone Master carry locks in the 2000-rating milestone and the +10 completions in one sitting.
What does the raid Great Vault reward — and why is it better now?
This is the biggest Season 2 change. In previous seasons the raid vault gave you an item at the difficulty you actually killed. In Patch 12.1, the raid row rewards an item one full difficulty above the bosses you defeated. As Method's guide states it plainly: "if you kill 2 bosses on the Heroic version of the Venomous Abyss… you will receive a 1/6 Myth Track Item."
| Raid Difficulty Cleared | Vault Reward Track |
|---|---|
| Raid Finder (LFR) | Champion 1/6 |
| Normal | Hero 1/6 |
| Heroic | Myth 1/6 (ilvl 318) |
| Mythic | Myth 6/6 |
| Mythic (last 2 bosses) | Top of Myth track (max ilvl) |
Thresholds are the classic 2 / 4 / 6 bosses for one, two, and three slots. The practical impact is enormous: a player who only clears Heroic Venomous Abyss now pulls Myth-track 318 gear from the vault — the same track ceiling a Mythic+ pusher gets. Only Mythic raiding advances the item further up the Myth track toward the season's maximum item level, which is why Mythic raid is now the sole source of top-end gear.
For most of the playerbase, that makes 6 Heroic boss kills a week one of the most efficient vault fills in the game. Our Venomous Abyss loot table breakdown covers which bosses to prioritise if you're only killing a handful.

What does the World (Delve) Great Vault reward?
The World row is filled by Delves, Prey, and world activities, at thresholds of 2 / 4 / 8 completions. Important limitation: the World row cannot give Myth-track loot in Season 2 — it caps at Hero 1/6, item level 305.
Delves are the fastest early-season vault filler. Here's the Season 2 Delve → vault table:
| Delve Tier | Vault Reward Track | Item Level |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Veteran 1/6 | 279 |
| Tier 2 | Veteran 2/6 | 282 |
| Tier 3 | Veteran 3/6 | 285 |
| Tier 4 | Veteran 4/6 | 289 |
| Tier 5 | Champion 1/6 | 292 |
| Tier 6 | Champion 3/6 | 298 |
| Tier 7 | Champion 4/6 | 302 |
| Tier 8 | Hero 1/6 | 305 |
Prey is an alternative and is quick to clear: Normal = Veteran (279), Hard = Champion (292), Nightmare = Hero 1/6 (305). Ritual Sites and other world content also contribute, but those are capped at Champion track, so if you want the 305 Hero reward, do Tier 8 Delves or Nightmare Prey rather than open-world grinding. To bank Delve completions fast, keep your Restored Coffer Keys topped up and follow the Bountiful Delves guide.
How do upgrade tracks and Mistcrests fit in?
Every vault reward comes on one of four upgrade tracks — Veteran, Champion, Hero, Myth — and each track has 6 upgrade ranks. A "Myth 1/6" item is at rank 1 of the Myth track and can be upgraded five more times with the Season 2 currency, Mistcrests, up toward the season's item-level ceiling. That's the second half of the S2 vault story: because lower-difficulty content now feeds higher tracks, the real cost of maxing your gear has shifted onto crests, not just the vault pull itself.
In practice: a Heroic raider grabbing a Myth 1/6 (318) from the vault still needs a stack of Mistcrests to push that piece to its cap, whereas a Mythic raider may receive it already at max item level, "saving you a lot of crests," as Method notes. If crests are your bottleneck, the Mistcrests farm guide shows every source and the weekly caps. For the full ceiling-by-ceiling picture, see our Season 2 gearing and item level chart.
Note on accuracy: Blizzard does not publish a per-slot item-level table officially. The item levels above are the current live Season 2 values tracked by Method and Wowhead and confirmed on live servers (source: method.gg). Blizzard-confirmed anchors: Mythic 0 dungeons drop 292, and Venomous Abyss Raid Finder has a 273 minimum item level (news.blizzard.com).
The most efficient weekly vault plan
To fill all three rows at the highest track available to you, here's the minimum you need each week:
- Mythic+ row: 8 keys, aiming for +10 on your best 8 → three Myth 1/6 (318) options.
- Raid row: 6 boss kills at Heroic or above → three Myth 1/6 (318) options (Mythic for higher).
- World row: 8 Tier 8 Delves or Nightmare Prey → three Hero 1/6 (305) options.
That's a lot of weekly content, and it's exactly why the community keeps calling modern gearing a second job. If your goal is the reward rather than the grind, the shortcut is boosting the completions that set your vault ceiling — timed +10s for the Mythic+ row and Heroic/Mythic Venomous Abyss for the raid row — so every slot lands on Myth track.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Great Vault slots are there in WoW Midnight Season 2? Nine total — three rows (Raid, Mythic+, World) with up to three reward slots each. You unlock slots by hitting the thresholds (2/4/6 raid bosses, 1/4/8 Mythic+ keys, 2/4/8 Delves/world activities), then choose one item from everything that unlocked at the weekly reset.
What's the highest item level from the Great Vault this season? From Mythic+, it's Myth 1/6, item level 318, unlocked at +10 and above. Delves cap at Hero 1/6 (305). The absolute season maximum item level comes only from Mythic raid vault slots, which advance further up the Myth track.
Do I need to push past +10 for a better vault? No — the Mythic+ vault item level caps at +10 (Myth 1/6, 318). Pushing +11, +12 and beyond raises your Raider.IO rating and unlocks dungeon portals, but it does not improve your vault's item level.
Is a Great Vault boost worth it? If you value your time, yes — the vault rewards your highest completions, so a single week of boosted +10 keys plus Heroic Venomous Abyss kills fills two rows entirely with Myth-track (318) options, versus many hours of self-grinding keys that may not time. Delves and Prey you can comfortably knock out yourself for the World row.
Can I take gold or currency instead of a vault item? In Season 2 you can choose Nebulous Voidcore (a Bonus Roll currency) instead of an item, but only from your second vault of the season and only when all three vault slots are filled. It's the play when nothing in the vault is an upgrade.
When did the Season 2 Great Vault open? Credit toward the Season 2 vault began during the Patch 12.1 prep week on August 11, 2026, and the first Season 2 vault rewards became available with the season launch on August 18, 2026.
