DBD Windows of Opportunity is changing from a broad route-planning perk into a window specialist in the 10.2.0 Public Test Build. If you use it to find pallets before a chase reaches a dead zone, that distinction matters more than the headline vault-speed bonus. This guide explains the published rework, compares the alternatives Behaviour names, and gives you a practical way to test your next loadout.

Quick answer: In the 10.2.0 PTB, Windows of Opportunity reveals window auras within 24 metres, grants 10% faster window vaults, and lists a 40/35/30-second cooldown whenever you vault a window. Pallets are no longer included in its reveal description. These are test-build changes, checked September 16, 2026, not the rules of live Patch 10.1.2. For pallet information, compare the reworked Dark Sense and Five Moves Ahead before replacing your build.

All proposed values below come from BHVR's official 10.2.0 PTB patch notes. Recommendations are editorial judgments, not measured win-rate rankings. The screenshots are official Curtain Call promotional gameplay, not captures of the new PTB interface.

What changes for DBD Windows of Opportunity in 10.2.0?

The rework has three published parts: a smaller, window-specific information package; a window-vault speed benefit; and a cooldown triggered by vaulting a window. Read them together. The point is not simply that one familiar perk now makes you faster. Its role in choosing a route is changing.

FeatureOfficial 10.2.0 PTB descriptionPractical reading

The notes do not spell out every interaction between the cooldown and the aura display. We are therefore not claiming that the auras definitely remain visible throughout the cooldown, or that they definitely disappear. That distinction needs direct testing or a clearer official description. What is confirmed is the trigger and its three durations.

That also means a vault-speed percentage is not a promise of a safe vault. A route still needs an actual window you can reach and a next move after crossing it. Do not translate “10% faster” into a fixed extra distance from the Killer: the notes do not provide that calculation, and chase circumstances differ.

For the wider update, our DBD 10.2.0 patch-notes guide covers the larger perk-update context. This page focuses on the specific loadout decision created by Windows.

Is the Windows of Opportunity nerf already live?

No: this article describes the PTB version. The official patch-notes index separates 10.2.0 PTB Patch Notes from the latest live 10.1.2 Bugfix Patch at this check. A test-build description should not be pasted into a live-build tier list as though everyone already has it.

There is an easy first-party example of the difference. Kate Denson's official character page describes Windows of Opportunity as revealing the auras of windows, pallets and breakable walls in your vicinity. The new PTB notes instead list windows, the vault bonus and the cooldown. Those sources serve different purposes: the character page explains the familiar perk, while the versioned notes specify what is being tested.

If your normal match still has the familiar pallet information, that is not evidence that the announcement is fake. First check which build you are playing. Conversely, a PTB clip showing the rework is not proof that the same behaviour has reached the main game.

Use our DBD PTB access guide if you want to investigate the test build. We are not assigning a confirmed live-release date to this rework from a calendar pattern. A future live patch may ship different values.

Why is Behaviour changing Windows of Opportunity?

Behaviour's explanation is about specialization. In the Windows developer note, the team writes:

“We feel especially with the inclusion of other options it's a good opportunity to make it specialize in Windows.”

The same note points players toward the new Dark Sense or a combination of Windows of Opportunity and Five Moves Ahead for the familiar resource-information role. That is useful guidance, but it is not a claim that either alternative is identical in uptime, conditions or slot cost.

If you brought Windows primarily to locate pallets, the information loss is a nerf to that purpose. If you already know where you want to go and want a window-focused benefit, the new speed component is something different to evaluate. Calling the whole perk “dead” skips that distinction; calling it a straightforward buff skips the lost coverage.

The useful question is personal and testable: what did this slot do for your decisions before the patch? Finding an unused route, locating a pallet under pressure and improving a planned window play are related jobs, but they are not interchangeable.

Can Dark Sense replace Windows of Opportunity?

Dark Sense is the closest single-perk option named by BHVR for temporary information about both pallets and windows. In the PTB, a completed Generator sets up its effect: when the Killer gets within 24 metres, the information lasts 8/9/10 seconds.

During that window, the notes list:

  • Pallet and window auras within 24 metres.
  • Other Survivors' auras.
  • The Killer's aura.

That is a substantial information package, but its condition matters. It is not described as a permanent resource overlay. If no Generator completion has set it up, you should not plan around the reveal being available simply because you entered a chase.

Behaviour says the intention is to give newer players a tool to learn maps and position near resources as the Killer approaches. As an editorial recommendation, test it if your main problem is choosing an escape direction at the start of pressure. It can help you compare resources and the Killer's position within the same brief period.

Do not assume a familiar old build becomes equivalent merely by swapping the perk icon. Test what happens before the first Generator finishes, after the reveal ends, and when you need information again during the same chase. Those are the moments that tell you whether its availability suits your playstyle.

What does Five Moves Ahead show after the rework?

The 10.2.0 PTB description makes Five Moves Ahead a pallet specialist. While you are in the Killer's Terror Radius or being chased, you see the auras of the five closest pallets. The notes explicitly change its targets from pallets and windows to pallets.

It also says that after dropping a pallet you start moving 50% earlier, with a 40/35/30-second cooldown whenever you drop a pallet. “Start moving earlier” is the wording to keep: it is not a 50% running-speed increase and should not be presented as Haste.

For someone whose main complaint is losing pallet information, this is the most direct targeted comparison. The catch is the condition. Its description ties the aura effect to the Terror Radius or a chase; do not describe it as unrestricted scouting across the entire match.

Combining it with Windows gives you a window-focused perk and a pallet-focused perk. That follows Behaviour's own suggestion, but uses two slots to cover information that many players previously associated with one. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on what you would remove from the rest of your loadout.

Which alternative fits your reason for using Windows?

Choose by the decision you need help making, rather than by the loudest reaction to the patch. This comparison uses only the published PTB descriptions; it is not a final competitive tier list.

If you play solo and use Windows to avoid blindly committing to a route, start by comparing information availability, not speed. A stronger effect that is inactive when you need it may serve you less well than a narrower one whose condition fits your matches.

If you mainly want to improve window plays, start with Windows alone. Adding multiple perks immediately makes it harder to identify what the rework itself contributes. Once you understand it, decide whether extra pallet information earns a second slot.

For the rest of a live loadout, consult our Survivor perk tier list for Patch 10.1.2. Keep that live-build reference separate from these PTB experiments; do not silently combine numbers from different versions.

How should you test the new Windows build?

Use a short, repeatable checklist. The goal is to discover where your decisions improve or fail, not to declare a universal winner after one favourable match.

Start with one changed slot

Keep the rest of your setup familiar, then test Windows, Dark Sense and Five Moves Ahead separately. Record what you needed when a chase began: a window, a pallet, the Killer's position or knowledge of an onward route. This makes your comparison about the actual information gap.

Check the trigger before judging the result

For Windows, note the window vault and the cooldown. For Dark Sense, track the Generator completion and Killer-proximity trigger. For Five Moves Ahead, distinguish being inside the Terror Radius from simply moving around the map without pressure. A perk failing to activate outside its stated condition is not automatically a bug.

Separate visibility from route quality

Seeing an aura tells you where a resource is, not whether choosing it is safe in the current situation. Look at the approach, the Killer's position and your onward route. Do not run toward a highlighted object purely because it is highlighted.

Record uncertainties rather than inventing rules

The Windows cooldown's exact relationship with the aura display is worth testing explicitly. So are interactions with other effects. This guide does not publish a combined vault-speed total without a verified stacking rule for that combination.

If you report a problem, include the build version, perk tier and steps that reproduced it. “It does not work” is less useful than explaining what happened immediately before the missing effect. You can compare observations with the official 10.2.0 PTB feedback section.

FAQ

Is Windows of Opportunity being removed from DBD? No. BHVR lists a rework in the 10.2.0 PTB, not a removal. The proposed perk focuses on window auras and faster window vaults, with a listed cooldown.

Does Windows of Opportunity still show pallets? The familiar description on Kate Denson's official page includes pallets. The 10.2.0 PTB description lists windows only. Check your build before treating the PTB change as a live-game rule.

Which Survivor has Windows of Opportunity? Kate Denson. Her official character page lists it alongside Dance With Me and Boil Over. You do not need to infer the owner from an old build screenshot or community nickname.

What is the new Windows of Opportunity cooldown? The PTB lists 40/35/30 seconds whenever you vault a window. The patch-note wording does not explicitly resolve every detail of the aura effect during that cooldown, so we leave that interaction unconfirmed here.

Is Dark Sense or Five Moves Ahead the better replacement? Test Dark Sense for a brief, Generator-triggered combination of resource and Killer information. Test Five Moves Ahead if pallet information during a Terror Radius or chase is your priority. Neither should be advertised as an unconditional copy of the old Windows.

Is the 10% bonus movement speed? No. The published Windows bonus is faster window vaulting, not faster running. Likewise, Five Moves Ahead's “50% earlier” movement after a pallet drop is not a 50% Haste effect.
