Fallout 76 Submachine Gun with drum magazine, the .45 automatic weapon at the center of an SMG build

Quick Answer: A Fallout 76 SMG build in 2026 runs on Perception, not on Commando cards. Bethesda renamed and reworked the old Commando line in Patch 1.7.20.12: Commando is now Center Masochist (+75% ranged torso damage at rank 3), Expert Commando is Fast Fighter, and Master Commando is Number Cruncher (+2% damage per point of AP cost). Pair those with Tank Killer (ignore 40% armor) and Ground Pounder (30% faster reloads, 45% better hip fire), aim center mass, and use the Submachine Gun (64 damage, 50-round magazine) or a legendary 10mm SMG such as Perfect Storm. Applies to Season 26 "Beware the Blood Moon!" and The Slasher update (live since September 15, 2026).

Why Does Every Old SMG Build Guide Look Wrong Now?

If you search for a Fallout 76 SMG build, most of what you will find still tells you to slot Commando, Expert Commando and Master Commando for +60% automatic rifle damage. Those cards do not exist anymore.

Bethesda's official patch notes for Patch 1.7.20.12 (the Season 21 "Gone Fission" update) list the change plainly under "Renamed Perks": Commando became Center Masochist, Commando Expert became Fast Fighter, and Commando Master became Number Cruncher. The cards were not just renamed. They now do completely different things, and none of them is restricted to automatic weapons. You can read the full transcript of the official 1.7.20.12 patch notes on fallout.wiki.

Bethesda explained the direction in the same notes: "Build diversity has also increased as we see people exploring the new opportunities that the Perk card changes have provided."

For SMG players this is mostly good news. The new cards reward exactly how an SMG is used: hip fire at close range, aimed at the body, with constant reloads. You just have to build for it instead of for a card list from 2024.

Three hard numbers frame the whole build:

  • +75% ranged damage to the torso from Center Masochist rank 3.
  • 40% of enemy armor ignored by Tank Killer rank 2.
  • +2% damage per AP point from Number Cruncher, which works out to roughly +30% on a base Submachine Gun with its listed AP cost of 15.

Which SMG Should You Use in Fallout 76?

Fallout 76 has two base submachine guns plus several named variants built on them. The SMG pages on fallout.wiki list the same damage perks for each: Center Masochist, Fast Fighter and Number Cruncher, plus Tank Killer for armor penetration and Covert Operative for sneak attacks.

Stats are from the weapon infoboxes on fallout.wiki. Both base guns can also chamber Ultracite ammo.

Fallout 76 10mm Submachine Gun side view with its 30-round magazine

The Submachine Gun (.45) is the stronger general pick. It hits harder per shot, carries a 50-round magazine and has the longer range of the two (183 vs 120). The trade-off is weight: at 7.0 pounds it is more than twice as heavy as the 10mm version. The fallout.wiki entry sums it up well, describing it as having "the lowest damage of all the automatic weapons, balanced by its large magazine, relatively low recoil, and speedy reloads when equipped with one of the quick eject drums."

The 10mm Submachine Gun is the light, cheap option. It weighs 3.0 pounds, uses one of the most common ammo types in Appalachia, and is the base for Perfect Storm, which is the easiest good legendary SMG to get right now.

Elder's Mark is a three-star legendary .45 Submachine Gun with a pre-attached cosmetic mod. Per fallout.wiki it is only obtainable as a reward from the Beasts of Burden event, and Bethesda's Slasher release notes list it among the unique weapons whose legendary mods can now be changed at a workbench.

Anchorage Ace is a silenced 10mm SMG and a possible reward from the Neurological Warfare event in Skyline Valley. Its fixed rolls per fallout.wiki are Executioner's (+50% damage when the target is below 40% health), VATS Enhanced (+50% VATS hit chance), +1 Agility and an integrated silencer. It is a strong find but a random drop, so do not plan a build around getting it.

What Are the Best Perks for an SMG Build?

This is the core card layout for a full health SMG build at level 50 and above. Card costs and effects are taken from the current perk pages on fallout.wiki.

Perception (15 points): the damage core

PerkRankPointsEffect
Center Masochist33+75% ranged damage when attacking the torso
Number Cruncher13+2% weapon damage per point of AP cost
Tank Killer22Ranged weapons ignore 40% armor
Ground Pounder33Small guns reload 30% faster, 45% more hip fire accuracy
Fast Fighter12Movement speed bonus also applies to reload speed
Tormentor12+20% damage per crippled limb on the target

Center Masochist is the single biggest damage card in the build. It works with any ranged weapon, but SMGs benefit most because you are hip firing at close range and the torso is the biggest target. Do not use VATS to target heads with this card equipped; you lose the bonus.

Number Cruncher scales with AP cost. Patch 1.7.20.12 also stopped automatic receivers from lowering the Submachine Gun's AP cost, so its listed AP cost of 15 stays put. That makes the card worth about +30% on the .45 SMG and about +28% on the base 10mm SMG. Perfect Storm and Old Guard's 10mm SMG list an AP cost of 28 on fallout.wiki and Elder's Mark lists 35, which on paper pushes the bonus past +50%.

Ground Pounder fixes the SMG's biggest weakness. Hip fire spread and reload downtime are what kill SMG damage output, and rank 3 covers both.

Fast Fighter only does something if you have a movement speed bonus active. Run it if you use the Speed Demon mutation or other speed sources; otherwise swap those 2 points into a utility card.

Agility: stealth variant only

If you play stealth, take Covert Operative rank 3 (ranged sneak attacks deal 2.5x damage) and add the legendary perk Follow Through, which raises the damage the target takes by up to 40% for 10 seconds after a ranged sneak hit at rank 4. A suppressor on the Submachine Gun also turns on Mister Sandman, which the wiki lists as working with the suppressor only.

Strength and Luck: what to skip

Bullet Storm is a trap for SMGs. It gives up to 9% damage per 30 rounds spent, but the stacks drop on every reload. A 30-round 10mm magazine earns you one stack before you reload, and even the 50-round .45 magazine only earns one. Leave it for the heavy gunner builds it was designed for (see our Fallout 76 heavy gunner build).

Bloody Mess is no longer a flat damage card in Fallout 76. It now only gives bleeding enemies you kill a Luck-based chance to explode. Unless your SMG causes bleeding, it does nothing for you.

Recommended SPECIAL Spread for an SMG Build

SPECIALPointsMain use
Strength5Carry weight and utility cards
Perception15Full damage core from the table above
Endurance5Survivability cards
Charisma3Team or ammo utility
Intelligence5Repair and crafting cards
Agility9Covert Operative and movement
Luck14Crits, ammo and loot utility

This totals 56, which is the normal cap at level 50 before Legendary Perk SPECIAL boosts. If you never sneak, move spare Agility points into Luck, keeping in mind the normal 15-point limit per attribute.

How Do You Get a Legendary SMG in Fallout 76?

This is the question r/fo76 players ask most about SMGs, and the answer in 2026 is easier than it used to be.

Perfect Storm, the unique 10mm SMG rewarded by the Cold Case quest and the Distant Thunder activity in Fallout 76

1. Perfect Storm from Cold Case or Distant Thunder. Perfect Storm is a named 10mm SMG with the Incendiary effect, which adds fire damage over time. You get one for completing the Cold Case quest, started by Miss Annie at Wavy Willard's Water Park. It is leveled to your character when you receive it, so many players wait until level 50 to hand the quest in. Since Patch 1.7.23.30 it also has a 15% chance to drop from Activity: Distant Thunder, and is no longer limited to the Incendiary effect alone. As one player put it in an r/fo76 thread about legendary SMGs on October 20, 2026: "This event is literally shoot about 10 scorched. Takes less than a minute."

2. Old Guard's 10mm SMG from Duty Calls. This unique 10mm SMG is the reward for completing the Duty Calls main quest from Wastelanders. The wiki lists it as not craftable and not scrappable, so treat it as a free early legendary and keep it.

3. Craft your own legendary SMG. Learn the plan, build the gun, then add legendary mods. Bethesda's legendary crafting help page notes that crafting costs vary by mod and use Legendary Modules plus other ingredients, so check the exact recipe at the workbench. Replacing a legendary mod on a regular weapon costs 50 Legendary Scrip for 1 to 3 star mods. Our Fallout 76 legendary farming guide covers where to farm modules fastest, and the legendary scrip farming guide covers the scrip side.

4. Replace the mods on a unique. Since The Slasher, Perfect Storm, Elder's Mark and the other 80+ named weapons can have their legendary mods replaced at a workbench. Replacing a mod on a unique costs 10x the normal scrip price (500 scrip for 1 to 3 star mods). Separately, crafting a three-star unique item at a workbench costs 30 Legendary Modules and 40 Vault Steel.

Where to get the Submachine Gun plan

Plan: Submachine Gun is always stocked by these vendors once you are level 15 or above, per fallout.wiki:

  • Responders Vendor at The Whitespring Resort
  • Vendor Bot Chad at Camden Park
  • Vendor Bot Greg in Grafton
  • Responder vendor bots at Charleston, Grafton, Lewisburg, Morgantown and Welch train stations

It also drops in the Toxic Valley and Savage Divide from containers, treasure maps and creatures, and has a 10% chance from Activity: Patrol Duty. The 10mm SMG plan comes from the Cold Case quest.

Which Legendary Effects Work Best on an SMG?

High fire rate means every per-hit effect procs constantly. For a full health build, these are the safest picks in 2026:

  • Furious (1 star): under the Onslaught system Bethesda introduced with The Ghoul Within, Furious gives +5% damage per Onslaught stack and raises your maximum stack capacity. Stacks build as you keep landing hits and decay over time, which suits an SMG's constant stream of hits.
  • Executioner's: +50% damage against targets below 40% health, the same roll Anchorage Ace comes with. Strong for finishing bosses.
  • Bloodied: only for low health builds. If you run one, see our mutations guide first, because the mutation layer matters more than the weapon roll.

Weapon Mods for the Submachine Gun

The fallout.wiki mod list for the .45 SMG makes the choices simple:

SlotBest modWhy
ReceiverHardened Receiver"Better damage." Use Armor Piercing if you lack Tank Killer
BarrelShort light barrelImproved hip fire accuracy
StockRecoil compensating stockExceptional recoil control
MagazineLarge quick eject drumSuperior ammo capacity and improved reload speed
SightsReflex sightBetter focus and sighted accuracy
MuzzleCompensator or SuppressorCompensator for recoil; Suppressor for stealth builds

The Scorched killer's receiver gives +50% damage against Scorched but -20% against everything else, so keep one only as a swap weapon for Scorched-heavy events.

SMG Build Playstyle Tips

  • Hip fire at the torso. Center Masochist rewards body shots, and Ground Pounder's 45% hip fire accuracy makes aiming down sights unnecessary at SMG range.
  • Close the distance. The 10mm SMG's range is 120 and the .45 SMG's is 183. Do not run Down Ranger, which only boosts damage against enemies 47 feet or farther away.
  • Cripple first in team fights. Tormentor adds 20% per crippled limb, and an SMG naturally spreads hits across limbs when the target moves.
  • Pick the right event. Distant Thunder is short, ammo-light and drops Perfect Storm. Running it every time you see it on the map is the cheapest legendary SMG farm in the game.

FAQ

Is the SMG good in Fallout 76 in 2026? Yes, as a light full health or stealth build. It will not match a heavy gunner's peak damage, but Center Masochist and Number Cruncher made SMGs much more competitive after Patch 1.7.20.12, and both base guns are cheap to build and feed.

Does Commando still affect SMGs? No. The Commando, Expert Commando and Master Commando cards were renamed to Center Masochist, Fast Fighter and Number Cruncher in Patch 1.7.20.12 and now work with any ranged weapon instead of automatic rifles only.

What is the best SMG in Fallout 76? For most players, the .45 Submachine Gun for raw damage and magazine size, or Perfect Storm if you want a free legendary 10mm SMG with built-in fire damage.

How do you get Perfect Storm? Complete the Cold Case quest from Miss Annie at Wavy Willard's Water Park, or run Activity: Distant Thunder, which has a 15% chance to award it.

Is the 10mm SMG or the Submachine Gun better? The Submachine Gun deals more damage (64 vs 59), holds more rounds (50 vs 30) and reaches further. The 10mm SMG weighs less than half as much (3.0 vs 7.0) and is the base for Perfect Storm.

Should SMG builds use Bullet Storm? No. Bullet Storm stacks drop on reload, so 30 or 50-round magazines only ever earn about one stack.

The Bottom Line

A good Fallout 76 SMG build in Season 26 comes down to three cards most guides still have wrong: Center Masochist, Number Cruncher and Tank Killer. Add Ground Pounder for reloads and accuracy, aim at the body, and grab Perfect Storm from Cold Case or Distant Thunder as your first legendary. Then craft or replace mods until you have Furious or Executioner's, using the modules and scrip you farm along the way.
