Quick answer
Madden 27 pass blocking isn't random, but it is harsh. Most "my O-line isn't blocking" sacks come from one of three things: a free rusher you never accounted for before the snap, the wrong protection setting, or ratings. Since the early-September update, higher-rated defenders shed blocks against lower-rated linemen more often. The October 21, 2026 title update (build 1.008) changed two protection rules: Empty protection no longer picks up defenders lined up outside the tackle box unless you ID them, and defenders you "Untarget" are now ignored completely. Fix it pre-snap: find the hot defender, slide or re-target your line, keep a back in when pressure is coming, and check the ball out fast.
Key takeaways
- There is always at least one unblocked "hot" defender against a big blitz. The job is choosing who, not removing him.
- Set Auto Pass Protection to Empty in Coaching Adjustments, but after 1.008 a wide slot or nickel blitzer won't be picked up unless you ID him manually.
- Untargeting the user defender now removes him from the blocking count entirely. Only do it with a hot route ready.
- A full 99 OVR line still allowed 38 sacks in a simulated Franchise season, so protection calls matter more than overall.
- Sliders only exist offline (Franchise, Play Now vs CPU). In MUT, the fix is pre-snap calls plus Pass Protector / Secure Protector linemen.
This guide applies to Madden NFL 27 on the October 21, 2026 title update (1.008) and MUT Season 3 (October 21 – December 1, 2026). Patches can retune blocking at any time, so check EA's Madden NFL 27 news page for anything newer.

Is pass blocking broken in Madden 27?
Partly. It isn't technically broken, but the complaints are real.
Complaints started in early-access week and haven't stopped. Operation Sports summarised the August wave with one player saying "All my O-line is 80+ [OVR] and I have maybe a second to throw the ball." There's an open EA Forums bug report titled "Offensive Lineman Not Blocking", and an r/MaddenUltimateTeam thread on the same topic drew 30+ comments this week.
The most useful data point comes from Operation Sports' 99 OVR offensive line experiment. They edited every starting Cardinals lineman to 99 OVR in Franchise and simulated a full season with Jacoby Brissett at QB.
| Result (99 OVR line, simulated season) | Number |
|---|---|
| Passing yards | 5,300 |
| Passing TDs / INTs | 34 / 15 |
| Completion % / QB rating | 67% / 97.8 |
| Sacks taken | 38 |
| What Operation Sports calls a good NFL line | ~25–30 sacks a season |
Even five 99s gave up nearly 40 sacks. That points to the cause: protection logic and assignments matter more than overall ratings in Madden 27. That's the part you control. Players in this week's thread reached the same conclusion. One reply put it bluntly: "you gotta learn how to adjust your protection accordingly."
What did the Madden 27 updates change about pass blocking?
Three patches have touched protection so far. Know these before you blame your line.
Early-September update (reported by Operation Sports on September 4, 2026):
- Aggressive Blocking Coach Adjustments now produce more realistic holding penalties.
- Offensive tackles are better at blocking defenders on contain assignments.
- Offensive tackles now correctly identify and block linebackers in wide alignments.
- "Higher rated defenders will now have a greater chance of shedding blocks against lower rated opponents."
- Blocking assignments for zone-blocking plays improved.
October 21, 2026 title update (1.008), from EA's Gridiron Notes:
"Players outside of the tackle box will no longer be targeted with Empty Protection unless manually ID'd."
"Defenders 'Untargeted' by the User will now be completely ignored."
Two practical effects. First, if your opponent sends a slot corner or wide linebacker while you're in Empty protection, your line will not pick him up automatically. You have to ID him or keep a back in. Second, Untarget is now absolute. If you untarget a defender, nobody blocks him, so you need a hot route or a quick throw ready on that side.
How do you fix pass blocking pre-snap in Madden 27?
This takes about three seconds per play once it's habit. The controls below follow civil.gg's Madden 27 pass-protection walkthrough, which uses the default Xbox-style layout. If you've remapped buttons, check Settings → Controls.
Step 1: Find the hot defender
Bring up the play art (Right Trigger + Up on the right stick) after the defense has set. Defenders shift late and the icon moves with them. A flame icon marks the defender your line won't block if he rushes. Then ask one question: if that guy comes free, can I live with it?
- Fine: a deep safety, a corner 8+ yards wide, a linebacker who usually drops into coverage. He takes time to arrive, and that time is your read.
- Not fine: anyone in an A-gap, or a speed rusher off the edge on your QB's blind side.
Step 2: Slide the line
- Flick right / left on the right stick = half slide that way.
- Double-flick = full slide.
Half slide is usually right. A full slide covers one side and leaves the other side's hot defender unblocked. Look again after every adjustment, because the flame takes a moment to update.
Step 3: Re-target the protection
- Flick up on the right stick for On-Target, then move the flame onto a specific defender. The best target is usually the user-controlled defender hovering at the line. If he really blitzes, you saw it coming. If he drops, your line has blocked everyone else.
- ID the Mike (civil.gg lists LT + A) to reset the protection count from a different linebacker.
- Hold LT to re-check the final blocking assignments before you snap.
Step 4: Keep a back in or chip
If the flame still lands on someone dangerous, put your HB (or TE) on a block assignment. Madden 27 also has a Chip Block mechanic, confirmed in EA's gameplay deep dive. A TE or HB delays a defender before releasing into the route, so you get one extra hit on the rusher and a checkdown option.
Step 5: Get the ball out
Against all-out pressure (the Cover 0 and Cover 9 blitz looks that come up again and again in this week's threads), use quick outs, slants and ins with max protect. Don't try to win with a 7-step drop. Play-calling counters for pressure are in our best money plays and best playbooks guides.
| Situation | Best call |
|---|---|
| Flame on a deep or wide defender | Leave it and snap |
| Flame on an A-gap or blind-side edge | Half slide toward him |
| User hovering at the line | On-Target the flame onto the user |
| Slot or nickel blitz while in Empty protection | ID him manually or keep the HB in (1.008 change) |
| Six or seven defenders showing pressure | Max protect, quick game, hot route |
What is the best pass protection setting in Madden 27?
Open Coaching Adjustments from the main menu, turn on Auto Pass Protection and set it to Empty. The default is Base, and civil.gg's settings guide calls Empty "the better all-around setting."
After 1.008, Empty has a specific blind spot: it won't target anyone outside the tackle box. Keep Empty as your default, but against a known slot-blitz opponent, plan to ID the wide defender yourself or keep a back in. Don't count on Empty to pick him up.
Aggressive blocking in Coach Adjustments isn't a free fix either. The September update made it draw more holding flags, so a drive-killing 10-yard penalty can replace the sack.

Do sliders fix pass blocking in Madden 27?
Only offline. In Franchise and Play Now vs CPU you can raise the pass blocking slider for the user team. Community reports vary a lot:
- Some players say raising user pass blocking to around 60 helped noticeably.
- Others report little change even at 100, and say the line still gets beaten within a couple of seconds.
So use sliders as a nudge, not a cure. The pre-snap steps above still do most of the work. Ultimate Team and online head-to-head games have no sliders, so there your only tools are protection calls, scheme and the linemen you field. For Franchise players, our best teams to rebuild guide covers which rosters have the line to build around.
Which offensive linemen and abilities help pass blocking in MUT?
Since the September update, block-shed rolls favour the higher-rated player. A 75 OVR guard against an 88 DT now loses more often than before. In MUT, that makes your interior line a real upgrade priority, not an afterthought behind skill positions.
What to look for on a lineman:
- Pass Block (PBK), Pass Block Power (PBP) and Pass Block Finesse (PBF). PBP holds up against bull rushers and PBF against speed and finesse moves. Match them to the rushers you face most.
- Strength for anchoring against power.
- Abilities. mut.gg's Madden 27 ability list describes Pass Protector as "slight protection vs. most quick pass block shed moves" at Bronze. Secure Protector combines the run and pass versions. Edge Protector is aimed at elite edge rushers on your tackles. One commenter in this week's thread runs "secure pro and pass protector on every one" of their linemen. Ability tiers in Madden 27 stack Bronze → Silver → Gold, and you need Ability Points to slot them. If an ability won't fire, our X-Factors and abilities guide covers the activation rules.
A free upgrade path right now: the Season 3 Field Pass reward John Hannah (84 OVR LG, Patriots) upgrades toward 91 OVR with Season 3 Upgrade Tokens. His mut.gg card lists Secure Protector, Edge Protector and Pass Protector among his abilities. Full levels are in our Season 3 Field Pass rewards guide.
Five starting linemen with good pass-block ratings add up to real Auction House coins. If you're pricing a line upgrade, our budget MUT team cost breakdown shows where coins go furthest.

Why does my O-line block nobody on some plays?
Some reports describe linemen standing still or "watching" a rusher run past. Most of those clips come down to three causes:
- The defender was untargeted. Since 1.008, an untargeted defender is ignored by design. If you untargeted the user and he blitzed, the line did what you told it.
- Empty protection plus a wide blitzer. Also by design since 1.008: Empty doesn't count defenders outside the tackle box.
- A slide toward the wrong side. The full slide moved the hot defender to the side he came from.
If none of those fit, save the clip and add it to the EA Forums bug thread. EA tunes blocking in title updates, and reports with video get acted on.
FAQ
Is pass blocking broken in Madden 27? Not broken, but strict. Operation Sports' test with five 99 OVR linemen still allowed 38 sacks in a simulated season, so protection calls matter more than ratings. Most "not blocking" sacks come from an unaccounted hot defender, the wrong protection setting, or the 1.008 Empty/Untarget changes.
Did the October 21 update fix pass blocking in Madden 27? It changed it rather than fixing it. Update 1.008 made Empty protection ignore defenders outside the tackle box unless you ID them, and made untargeted defenders completely ignored. Your line follows your calls more strictly now, which helps if you set protection and hurts if you don't.
What is the best pass protection setting in Madden 27? Turn on Auto Pass Protection in Coaching Adjustments and set it to Empty instead of the default Base. After 1.008, manually ID or keep a back in against slot and wide blitzers, because Empty won't target them.
How do you slide protection in Madden 27? With the default layout civil.gg uses, flick the right stick left or right for a half slide and double-flick for a full slide. Flick up for On-Target to move the flame onto a specific defender. Check the flame again after every adjustment.
Do pass blocking sliders work in MUT? No. Sliders only apply offline in Franchise and Play Now vs CPU. In Ultimate Team Head-to-Head, use pre-snap protection calls and linemen with good PBK/PBP/PBF ratings and abilities like Pass Protector or Secure Protector.
Why does my offensive line let a defender run straight through? Usually because the defender was your hot man: untargeted, outside the tackle box in Empty protection, or on the side a full slide left open. If none of those apply, report the clip in EA's "Offensive Lineman Not Blocking" forum thread.
