Six weeks after launch, a lot of Onimusha: Way of the Sword players are now working through the Boss Rematch menu. It's where you finish the Platinum and unlock the last two outfits, and it's where the Bishamon Sword victory laps showing up on r/Onimusha this week are being played. The game itself doesn't explain any of it, so this guide covers where Boss Rematch is, what you can bring in, all 18 fights with their difficulty ratings, and what you actually get for clearing them.
Quick answer: Boss Rematch is part of the Practice Ground, which opens during the story mission "The Oni's Apprentice." Ring the bell in the corner of Emma's Hall, talk to Takamura, and pick Boss Rematch. Every story boss shows up there once you've beaten it, and you choose the difficulty. The list has 18 fights. Only Hozuki Pouches are allowed, with no item-wheel consumables. There's no item drop per fight. Clearing every boss on Story or Action unlocks the Warlord's Armor outfit. Clearing every boss on Carnage unlocks Warlord's Armor 2, which makes your gauntlet absorb nearby souls automatically. Beating all opponents on all difficulty levels earns the Glutton for Punishment trophy/achievement, and a Carnage clear also counts for the lower difficulties.
Where is Boss Rematch in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Boss Rematch is one of two menus inside the Practice Ground. The other is Drills, the combat tutorials. According to PowerPyx's trophy guide, the Practice Ground "you unlock during 'The Oni's Apprentice'" is reached like this: "go to Emma's Hall and ring the Bell in the corner of the Hall to enter the practice grounds. Once inside, speak to Takamura and select 'Boss Rematch' and select which Boss and which difficulty you want to play." Vandal's Practice Ground guide also lists the Practice Ground as reachable from Spirit Mirrors, so once you've opened it you don't need to walk back to the bell every time.
Two rules decide what's on the menu:
- A boss only appears after you've beaten it in the story. Vandal: "Once you defeat a boss, it becomes available for a rematch in the Practice Ground." A first playthrough fills the list gradually, so it isn't complete until the credits roll.
- You pick the difficulty for each fight. Story and Action are available right away. Carnage only becomes selectable after you've finished the game once, since that's when the mode unlocks (see our Carnage & New Game Plus guide).
Progress isn't lost if you start New Game+. The Fextralife wiki says "Drill and Boss Rematch unlock and completion status carry over into New Game Plus," but notes that the Practice Ground "becomes available again as you progress." Your completed fights stay ticked, but on a fresh NG+ file you'll have to reach the Practice Ground in the story again before you can use the menu.
What can you bring into a Boss Rematch?
Your build, your Hozuki Pouch, and nothing else. This is the restriction most people miss before their first Carnage rematch. Fextralife puts it bluntly: "Rematches allow Hozuki but no other usable items," and PowerPyx repeats it: "In Boss Rematch you can't use items/consumables from the item wheel."
That rule changes how you prepare, especially for the final boss:
- Allowed: your skills, charms and charm enhancements, Oni Armaments, any equipped cosmetic (including the Bishamon Sword), and any Hozuki Pouch you've unlocked. Vandal notes you can "choose from any Hozuki Pouches you have unlocked."
- Not allowed: the consumables that carry a campaign Yoshitsune attempt, such as Amulets of Introspection, Stimulants, Sun-Dried Hozuki, Might and Defense Talismans, and Heavy Restoratives.
So a rematch is harder than the same fight in the story if you relied on items there. Your charm loadout has to make up the difference. PowerPyx's Carnage build is maxed Charm of Awakening + Charm of Oni Power + Fencer's Strength Charm + a maxed default Hozuki Pouch, which feeds Oni Awakening as fast as possible. Our best charms tier list covers the alternatives.
All 18 Boss Rematch fights and their Carnage difficulty ratings
The rematch menu lists 18 fights. Several bosses appear twice, once as their story version and once as their Enhanced, Altered or Fully Armed form. The order below matches the Boss Rematch sub-menu as listed by PowerPyx and Vandal. The difficulty ratings come from PowerPyx's Carnage boss guide and are rated on Carnage, so expect lower numbers on Action.
| # | Rematch opponent | Carnage difficulty (PowerPyx, /10) | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Byakue | 2.5 | Shoulder charge and sprint can't be Issen'd |
| 2 | Byakue (Enhanced) | 3 | Malice axe slam below 50% HP — jump it |
| 3 | Dohatsu-ten | 3.5 | White-glowing "No escape" attacks |
| 4 | Dohatsu-ten (Enhanced) | 3.5 | Enhanced teleports from the start |
| 5 | Nue (Blue) and Nue (Red) | 3 | Two targets — fight with lock-on off |
| 6 | Sasaki Ganryu | 3.5 | Blue grab, delayed wave strikes |
| 7 | Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) | 7 | Gioh's mouth grab, Malice white-glow strike |
| 8 | Daidara | 3 | Steals loose blue souls to power up |
| 9 | Rasho-gan | 4 | Malice orb spam at range, tree throws |
| 10 | Greater Nue | 5.5 | Phase 2 lightning rain — keep moving to avoid it |
| 11 | Benkei | 3 | Regular hits need armor stripped first (Issen still deals damage) |
| 12 | Benkei (Fully Armed) | 5 | Cannon throw, shoulder cannon — shoot it |
| 13 | Ifuu | 4 | Suction attack — shoot the back bladder |
| 14 | Burai | 5 | Off-screen lightning leap into slam |
| 15 | Ifuu and Burai | 6 | Shared storm ram can one-shot on Carnage |
| 16 | Shuten Doji | 5.5 | Regenerates health; fire breath |
| 17 | Dokyo | 2.5 | Gimmick chase; Moon Meteor rock cover |
| 18 | Minamoto no Yoshitsune | 8.5 | Three phases; phase 3 only hurts in Oni Awakening |
Two fights are much harder than the rest. PowerPyx calls Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) "the second-toughest fight in the game," saying that "on Carnage, he can kill you in two hits if you let your guard down." Yoshitsune at 8.5 is the hardest. Because rematches block consumables, Yoshitsune's third phase (where he takes no damage unless you're in Oni Awakening) comes down to building souls from Issen and Blazing State rather than leaning on Stimulants. Full move breakdowns: Yoshitsune final boss guide, Greater Nue, Shuten Doji and Dokyo.
Players disagree about the middle of the list. In a Carnage rematch thread on r/Onimusha this week, one player said Benkei (Fully Armed) took them "10+ tries" even with the Bishamon Sword, while Yoshitsune went down first try. Another replied that they could Issen "nearly 80% of his moveset easily." The Altered Ganryu grab has its own thread too. The fix players gave there is that the grab comes from Gioh, not Ganryu: "it's her face that flashes," and she's often behind him or at the edge of the screen. Wait a beat after the flash, then dodge or Issen as her head comes down. Pressing too early is the usual mistake.
What are the Boss Rematch rewards?
Two outfits and two trophies. No per-fight drops. That's the most common confusion. Drills in the same Practice Ground do hand out items for each completion. Rematches don't. As one r/Onimusha player summed it up in launch week, "It's not like the training drills where you earn something for every boss you beat in rematch."
| Reward | How to earn it | Gameplay effect |
|---|---|---|
| Warlord's Armor (outfit) | Beat every Boss Rematch on Story or Action | Cosmetic only |
| Warlord's Armor 2 (outfit) | Beat every Boss Rematch on Carnage | Yes — gauntlet auto-absorbs nearby souls |
| Second Helping (trophy/achievement) | Beat any one opponent in Boss Rematch | — |
| Glutton for Punishment (trophy/achievement) | Beat all Boss Rematch opponents on all difficulty levels | — |
Maxroll's cosmetics guide sums up the two armors as "Every boss rematch on Story or Action difficulty" and "Every boss rematch on Carnage difficulty." Both appear under Change Appearance at the Spirit Mirror once earned.
Warlord's Armor 2 is the one that matters for play. It's one of only two reward cosmetics in the game with a real effect (the other is the Bishamon Sword). Maxroll says that with it equipped, "your Gauntlet automatically absorbs nearby souls. This makes it much easier to deal with bosses (or regular Genma) who like to steal souls for themselves." It also describes running both together: "With the two combined, you feel like you're permanently in Oni Awakening, of course you don't have the damage immunity or Onimusha Onslaught." Capcom hasn't published exact values for either effect as of October 19, 2026, so ignore guides that quote precise percentages.
Glutton for Punishment: how many rematches do you actually need?
Glutton for Punishment ("Beat all Boss Rematch opponents on all difficulty levels") sounds like 18 fights × 3 difficulties = 54 clears. It isn't. PowerPyx confirms a cascade rule: "Completing a Boss on the hardest difficulty available will complete all difficulties below it as well."
So the efficient route is:
- Finish the campaign once on Story or Action. All 18 rematches are now listed and Carnage is unlocked.
- Beat the campaign on Carnage for True Onimusha and the Bishamon Sword. This step is optional for the rematch trophy, but it's the usual order because the Bishamon Sword's wider Issen window makes the Carnage rematches much easier.
- Clear all 18 rematches on Carnage with the Bishamon Sword equipped. Thanks to the cascade, each Carnage win also ticks Story and Action, so this pass covers the trophy.
PowerPyx lists Glutton for Punishment and True Onimusha together as the game's hardest trophies, puts overall trophy difficulty at 6.5/10, and estimates 60–70 hours for the Platinum. Few players have finished it. A Steam achievement screen shared on r/Onimusha on October 18, 2026 showed Glutton for Punishment at 10.4% of players, True Onimusha at 11.3%, and the all-achievements Peerless at 7.4%. The full list is in our Platinum trophy guide.
One open question: PowerPyx's cascade line covers the trophy. No source we found explicitly confirms that a Carnage-only sweep also unlocks the Story/Action Warlord's Armor outfit. If it doesn't show up under Change Appearance after your Carnage pass, clear the remaining fights on Action.
Best way to beat Carnage Boss Rematches
Carnage rematches combine Carnage's near one-hit-kill damage with the no-consumables rule, so preparation matters more here than anywhere else in the game. Here's what works, based on PowerPyx's Carnage guide and what players are posting this week:
- Equip the Bishamon Sword first. It works on any difficulty and widens the Issen window. One r/Onimusha player said Yoshitsune took "about 11 hours on Carnage" in the campaign, then went down "FIRST TRY" in the rematch with Bishamon equipped. See our Issen guide if the timing is still the problem.
- Run an Awakening-feed charm set. Awakening, Oni Power and Fencer's Strength, all maxed, plus your best Hozuki Pouch. Without consumables, Oni Awakening is your main burst damage and your easier-Issen window.
- Take purple souls on stamina breaks. PowerPyx: purple releases "yellow (health), blue (Oni Power) and purple souls (Oni Awakening)," which keeps the Awakening loop going in long fights like Yoshitsune and Altered Ganryu.
- Don't take early chip damage. "Bosses in this game are dynamic," PowerPyx notes, and they can "slip into their enhanced state much sooner depending on how much damage you take."
- Learn the special-counter moves. White-glowing attacks can only be deflected or parried. Greater Nue's lightning rain has to be avoided by moving, Dokyo's Moon Meteor needs the one intact boulder as cover, and Benkei (Fully Armed)'s charged shoulder cannon should be shot down with the Oni Bow before it fires. Our Carnage survival guide has the full list.
- Drill the technique, not the whole fight. Drills isolate the combat techniques you've learned (Issen, Deflect, Unavoidable Attacks and so on), not individual boss moves, so they're a good way to sharpen the input a boss keeps punishing. Drills also give items (for example, the Issen drill gives an Amulet of Introspection and the Oni Awakening drill gives 2 Stimulants, per Vandal), which helps on your campaign file.
Practice Ground drill rewards (bonus)
Since you're in the Practice Ground anyway, here's what the Drills side pays out. These are one-time rewards from Vandal's Practice Ground guide, and drills only unlock once you've learned the relevant skill:
| Drill | Reward |
|---|---|
| Issen | Amulet of Introspection ×1 |
| Chain Issen | Amulet of Introspection ×2 |
| Still Water | Amulet of Introspection ×1 |
| Unavoidable Attacks | Heavy Restorative ×2 |
| Oni Awakening | Stimulant ×2 |
| Earth-Shakers | Greater Might Talisman ×1 |
| Blazing State | Horn Token (Blazing) ×2 |
| Reflex Combos | Horn Token (Reflex) ×2 |
That's 4 Amulets of Introspection and 2 Stimulants, both key Yoshitsune consumables, for a few minutes of tutorials. Collect them before the campaign final boss. They can't be used inside Boss Rematch itself.

FAQ
How do you unlock Boss Rematch in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? Progress the story to "The Oni's Apprentice," which opens the Practice Ground. Ring the bell in the corner of Emma's Hall, speak to Takamura, and choose Boss Rematch. Each boss appears on the list once you've beaten it in the story.
What are the Boss Rematch rewards? Clearing every rematch on Story or Action unlocks the Warlord's Armor outfit. Clearing every rematch on Carnage unlocks Warlord's Armor 2, which makes your gauntlet auto-absorb nearby souls. Rematches also count toward the Second Helping and Glutton for Punishment trophies. Individual fights don't drop items.
How many bosses are in Boss Rematch? 18, including Enhanced, Altered and Fully Armed versions of several bosses, the two-Nue fight and the Ifuu-and-Burai double fight. Minamoto no Yoshitsune is last.
Can you use items in Boss Rematch? Only Hozuki Pouches. Item-wheel consumables like Amulets of Introspection, Stimulants and Talismans are disabled in rematches.
Do I have to beat every boss three times for Glutton for Punishment? No. Per PowerPyx, beating a boss on the hardest difficulty also completes the easier ones, so clearing all 18 on Carnage covers every difficulty for the trophy.
Does Boss Rematch progress carry over to New Game Plus? Yes. Per the Fextralife wiki, rematch unlock and completion status carry into NG+, though you'll need to reach the Practice Ground in the story again before you can use it on the new file.
Which Boss Rematch is the hardest? Minamoto no Yoshitsune (rated 8.5/10 on Carnage by PowerPyx), then Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) at 7/10. On r/Onimusha, plenty of players also put Benkei (Fully Armed) near the top because of his grab and cannon attacks.
