Most Onimusha: Way of the Sword players get through the whole story on the starting pouch. Then they hit Carnage or the Boss Rematch list, where Hozuki is the only healing you're allowed to bring, and realise there were four other pouches in the game all along. This week r/Onimusha had both halves of that problem: a thread from a player who accidentally swapped off the healing pouch and couldn't find a way back, and a 30-plus-comment thread about using Sun-Dried Hozuki to bring more fruit into a boss fight. This guide covers all five Hozuki Pouches, what each one restores, the full upgrade cost, where the nine pouch pickups are, and how to switch pouches. Figures are as of 2026-10-20 and come from the guide sources cited inline.
Quick answer: There are 5 Hozuki Pouches: Default (instant heal), Regeneration (heal + stamina over time), Aggressor (Oni Power + Reflex, no healing), Resistance (heal + Oni Power over time) and Awakening (Oni Power + Awakening gauge, no healing). You can only equip one at a time. Swap at any Spirit Mirror or by talking to Okuni, and players report you can also do it from the retry screen after dying to a boss. Okuni enhances pouches after the mission "Patching up the Pouch." Level 3 on any pouch costs a Skeleton Hozuki, and there are 5 in the game. Fully upgrading all five pouches unlocks the Medical Marvel trophy/achievement. For most fights, the upgraded Default pouch is the best pick. Resistance is the strongest choice if you lean on Oni Armaments.
How many Hozuki Pouches are there in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Musashi starts with a worn-out Hozuki Pouch that holds 4 fruit and restores about 25% health per use, per Maxroll's Hozuki Pouch data table. During main mission "Patching up the Pouch" (mission 8 in Maxroll's numbering), Okuni repairs it into Hozuki Pouch: Default. After that you can find four Oni Cloths in Genma strongholds around Kyoto, and Okuni turns each one into a new pouch.
Maxroll's guide opens with the plainest summary of the system: "Your main source of on-demand healing is the Hozuki Pouch. Eat a fruit to instantly restore your health, at least with the default pouch. Other pouches grant regeneration or recover other resources."
The important part is the last sentence. Two of the five pouches don't heal you at all. If you switch to one of them without knowing that, your next boss fight goes badly fast.
| Pouch | Restores | Uses (L1 → L3) | Heals? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default | Instant health (~33% per use) | 5 → 6 → 7–8 | ✅ Yes, instantly |
| Regeneration | Health and stamina over 25 s | 5 → 6 → 7 | ✅ Yes, over time |
| Aggressor | Oni Power + Reflex Gauge | 4 → 4 → 4 | ❌ No |
| Resistance | Health and Oni Power over 15 s | 4 → 5 → 6 | ✅ Yes, over time |
| Awakening | Oni Power + Awakening Gauge | 3 → 3 → 3 | ❌ No |
Sources: use counts from Maxroll and Vandal's pouch guide, which agree on every tier except Default Level 3. Maxroll lists 7 uses there and Vandal lists 8. Effect wording from Game Rant and the Fextralife wiki.
What does each Hozuki Pouch do?
Default: the reliable instant heal
This is the repaired starting pouch. Each fruit restores a fixed chunk of health immediately (Maxroll lists 33% HP per use), and capacity grows from 5 to 6 to 7–8 as you upgrade it. Game Rant calls it "generally the most reliable out of all the available options." It's the only pouch that gives you health back the moment you eat, which is what you want right after a big hit from a boss.
Regeneration: the most total healing
Made from the crimson Oni Cloth. It heals over time instead of instantly. Maxroll's table lists 2% HP per second and 2% stamina per second for 25 seconds, which adds up to roughly half your health bar per fruit, about 1.5× a Default fruit. The stamina regen matters too: you can keep blocking without getting exhausted. IGN's verdict: it "heals a larger chunk of your health than the Default Pouch, so if you can buy yourself enough time for the healing to complete, you'll be better off using this one." The catch is the 25-second tick. If you take another hit before it finishes, you've lost the value.
Aggressor: Oni Power and Reflex, no healing
Made from the light-blue Oni Cloth. It refills Oni Power (Maxroll: +300 / +400 / +500 by level) and the Reflex Gauge (+30% / +40% / +50%), so you can use Oni Armaments and Reflex Dodge counters more often. It holds 4 fruit at every level. Game Rant's warning is the one to remember: "this pouch will not heal you." Your only healing while it's equipped is Restoratives and yellow souls.
Resistance: the best all-rounder
Made from the dark-green Oni Cloth. It heals and refills Oni Power over time (Maxroll: +2% HP/s and +20 Oni Power/s for 15 s, about 30% health plus 300 Oni Power per fruit). IGN calls it "likely the most well-rounded Hozuki Pouch in the game," and Game Rant describes it as the pouch for fighting bosses "more aggressively without compromising your healing."
Awakening: built for Oni Awakening players
Made from the purple Oni Cloth. It refills Oni Power (+300 / +400 / +500) and the Awakening Gauge (+20% / +25% / +30%) and holds only 3 fruit at every level. It doesn't heal. It's also not much use until you unlock Oni Awakening in the climactic fight of "The Demon on the Mount" (IGN and Maxroll). Once you have that, Awakening makes Issen far easier and protects you from health and stamina damage, as our Oni Awakening form guide explains. Game Rant suggests pairing it with the Still Water armament to fill the gauge even faster.
Which Hozuki Pouch is best?
There's no single best pouch. There's a best pouch for how you fight. Here's how we'd pick, based on the numbers above:
- First playthrough, Story or Action: Default, upgraded to Level 3. It ties for the most uses (7, or 8 per Vandal) and it's the only pouch that heals instantly, so it covers mistakes better than anything else. It's the safe pick for anyone still learning boss patterns.
- Confident parry/Issen players: Resistance. You get back about 30% health per fruit and enough Oni Power for an extra armament special, so healing also tops up the gauge your Oni Armaments run on. This is the pick for most Boss Rematch runs.
- Long, low-damage-taken fights: Regeneration. It has the most total healing per fruit and refills stamina. It's best against bosses with clear gaps between combos where the 25-second tick can finish.
- Carnage mode: Carnage's effectively one-hit-kill damage (see our Carnage mode tips) makes a slow heal-over-time pouch risky, because you can die before it finishes. That leaves two sensible options: Default for instant top-ups, or fully offensive Aggressor/Awakening if you're confident you won't get hit. It's a play-style call, not a hard rule.
- Aggressor and Awakening are for specialists. Maxroll calls them "the most difficult to use but they provide potent bonuses to an Onimusha who can adeptly evade his foes."
One rule for every boss: you can only equip one pouch, so check which one you have before you walk through the fog. That's the exact mistake behind this week's "how do I change back to healing" thread.
How do you switch Hozuki Pouches?
Vandal states the basic rules: "You can change your Hozuki Pouch at any Spirit Mirror or by talking to Okuni. Keep in mind that you can only have one Hozuki Pouch equipped at a time." Okuni is at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, your base in Kyoto.
The r/Onimusha replies to the player who got stuck on a non-healing pouch added a third option. Several players say you can also change pouches from the retry screen after dying to a boss, which is probably where most accidental swaps happen. We couldn't confirm that in an official source, so treat it as player-reported. If you can't find the option there, a Spirit Mirror always works.
How do you upgrade Hozuki Pouches?
Talk to Okuni after finishing "Patching up the Pouch." Each pouch has three levels. Level 2 uses crafting materials, some of them rare (Fine Silk Cloth, Tamahagane, Byakue's Talisman). Level 3 always needs one Skeleton Hozuki. Upgrades increase both capacity and potency. Fextralife puts it this way: enhancements "increase both capacity and restorative power."
| Pouch | Level 2 cost | Level 3 cost |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Hempen Cloth ×2, Cotton Cloth ×2, Leather ×2, Fine Silk Cloth ×1 | Cotton Cloth ×3, Leather ×2, Fine Silk Cloth ×1, Skeleton Hozuki ×1 |
| Regeneration | Hempen Cloth ×2, Cotton Cloth ×2, Leather ×2 | Hempen Cloth ×2, Cotton Cloth ×3, Leather ×3, Skeleton Hozuki ×1 |
| Aggressor | Whetstone ×2, Iron ×2, Tempered Iron ×2 | Whetstone ×2, Iron ×3, Tempered Iron ×3, Skeleton Hozuki ×1 |
| Resistance | Whetstone ×2, Iron ×2, Tempered Iron ×2, Tamahagane ×1 | Iron ×3, Tempered Iron ×2, Tamahagane ×1, Skeleton Hozuki ×1 |
| Awakening | Malicite ×4, Byakue's Talisman ×3, Malicite Mass ×1 | Malicite ×4, Dohatsu-ten's Horn ×2, Malicite Mass ×2, Skeleton Hozuki ×1 |
Costs per PowerPyx's pouch guide and Vandal, which match. Maxroll's table lists a slightly different Default Level 3 recipe (Hempen Cloth ×3 instead of Cotton Cloth ×3), so check Okuni's screen before you farm. Maxing all five costs 2 Fine Silk Cloth, 2 Tamahagane and all 5 Skeleton Hozuki on top of common materials. For where those come from, see our upgrade materials guide.
Which pouch to level first: your main pouch to Level 3. Since only one can be equipped at a time, a maxed Default or Resistance does more for you than five half-upgraded pouches. Upgrades also carry into New Game+. Hozuki Pouches and pouch enhancements are on the carry-over list in our Carnage & New Game+ guide, which makes leftover materials before the final boss a good investment.
Where are all the Hozuki Pouch locations?
PowerPyx counts 9 pouch pickups: 4 Oni Cloths and 5 Skeleton Hozuki. Game Rant notes that after Okuni's pouch quest, the locations are revealed on your map, where they're marked "Pouch-Crafting Materials" (as PowerPyx's map captures show). Most of them sit in pairs inside the same Genma stronghold:
- Oni Cloth (Regeneration) + Skeleton Hozuki #1: southeast Kyoto (IGN places it on Kiyomizu-zaka Slope). The street route is blocked. Go through the courtyard to the north, across the rooftops, then drop down. Use Oni Power on the Oni marker to reveal the cloth chest. The Skeleton Hozuki is in the chest just inside the Oni Gate. Available early.
- Oni Cloth (Aggressor) + Skeleton Hozuki #2: southwest Kyoto, after "The Roots of All Evil" clears the Malice (IGN: after you first beat Dohatsu-ten). Go through the attic of the southern house, destroy the 2 Genma sealing the Oni Gate, and clear the ambush. The Skeleton Hozuki is in an alcove chest to the right, and the cloth is under the crawl space next to it (reveal with Oni Vision).
- Oni Cloth (Resistance) + Skeleton Hozuki #3: south of the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror, also after "The Roots of All Evil." Climb the ladder on the west side, cross with Oni Agility, and break the Malice Barrier. The Skeleton Hozuki chest is at the barrier and the cloth is just past it (Oni Vision).
- Oni Cloth (Awakening) + Skeleton Hozuki #4: northeast of the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror. The area opens after "Okuni's Kabuki Dance." Kill the spider hand to open the Oni wall, beat a Byakue, then survive a courtyard ambush. The Skeleton Hozuki is in the north of that courtyard and the cloth is through the northwest scaffolding crawl space. Vandal notes Okuni won't actually hand over the Awakening pouch until you reach "A Haunted Distraction", even if you give her the cloth earlier. PowerPyx puts it as after defeating Shuten Doji.
- Skeleton Hozuki #5: from the Hidden Treasure No. 5 chance encounter (PowerPyx). Per Maxroll, it's available after "In the Light of an Icy Moon", starts on Shijo Street, and ends at the top of the Yasaka Pagoda. Use Oni Vision to reveal the chest.
PowerPyx notes everything stays collectible "up until the Point of No Return before the final mission 'The Clash At Rendaino'." Keep a manual save there if you're going for completion.
How do you refill Hozuki in a fight? (Sun-Dried Hozuki)
Touching a Spirit Mirror fully restores health and refills your supplies. Wild Hozuki plants top up your pouch between mirrors (Maxroll). The rare Sun-Dried Hozuki refills the pouch itself, even mid-fight (Maxroll: it "can restore Hozuki charges in combat"). Maxroll recommends saving it for "the game's most dangerous bosses."
That's what the "Bring 10 Hozuki fruit into battle" thread was about. The original post says that "by using the dried up fruit it’ll replenish your pouch by 3 fruits," so on a 7-use pouch you effectively bring 10 into a fight. Treat the exact refill amount as player-reported, because Fextralife's item page says the in-game description "does not state a numeric refill amount." Players in the same thread also report that consumables used in a fight you lose are restored when you retry, because the game reloads a save from before the fight. We couldn't confirm that in a guide source, but if it holds, testing a Sun-Dried Hozuki on a boss you haven't learned yet costs you nothing.
Hozuki Pouches in Boss Rematch and Carnage
This is where pouch choice matters most. In the Boss Rematch menu, Hozuki Pouches are the only healing allowed, with no item-wheel consumables, so the pouch you bring is your entire recovery plan for the fight. For a Glutton for Punishment or Warlord's Armor 2 run on Carnage, max your chosen pouch first. Fully upgrading all five also unlocks the Medical Marvel trophy, one of the collectible trophies in our Platinum trophy guide.
FAQ
How many Hozuki Pouches are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? Five: Default, Regeneration, Aggressor, Resistance and Awakening. You also start with an unrepaired basic pouch (4 fruit) that Okuni turns into the Default pouch during "Patching up the Pouch."
How do I change my Hozuki Pouch back to healing? Re-equip Hozuki Pouch: Default (or Regeneration/Resistance) at any Spirit Mirror or by talking to Okuni at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple. Players also report the option on the retry screen after a boss death. Aggressor and Awakening don't heal at all.
What is the best Hozuki Pouch? A Level 3 Default pouch for most players, since it ties for the most uses and is the only instant heal. Resistance is the best all-rounder if you use Oni Armaments heavily, and Regeneration gives the most total healing if you can avoid getting hit while it ticks.
Where do I get Skeleton Hozuki? There are five. Four are in chests next to the four Oni Cloths, and the fifth comes from the Hidden Treasure No. 5 chance encounter after "In the Light of an Icy Moon." Each pouch's Level 3 upgrade needs one.
Do Hozuki Pouch upgrades carry over to New Game+? Yes. Hozuki Pouches and pouch enhancements carry into New Game+/Carnage, while sword and gauntlet enhancements reset.
How do I get the Medical Marvel trophy? Its condition is "Enhance all Hozuki Pouches to the maximum level" (PowerPyx trophy guide). Find all four Oni Cloths and five Skeleton Hozuki, then have Okuni upgrade all five pouches to Level 3. The trophy unlocks on the final upgrade.
