Onimusha: Way of the Sword — All 3 Oni Portal Locations (Unlock Every Skill Tier + Oni Stones)

Onimusha: Way of the Sword hides the upper half of your skill tree behind three dungeons called Oni Portals — and the game only forces you to finish one of them. Miss the other two, and you'll fight the last third of the campaign with your highest skill tiers greyed out, wondering why your build feels stuck. This guide maps all three Oni Portal locations in Eastern Kyoto, the puzzle inside each one, exactly which skill tiers they unlock, and the single mistake that leaves most players under-powered for the back half of the game.

Quick answer: There are 3 Oni Portals (the menu also calls them Oni Gates) in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, all in the Eastern Kyoto hub. Each opens an Oni Realm — a short block-shooting puzzle that ends at a Dark Mass. Touching the Dark Mass unlocks a new skill tier at every Spirit Mirror plus upgrade materials. Portal #1 is mandatory during the story mission A Strength in Refuge and opens Tier 3; Portal #2 (optional, after The Roots of All Evil) opens Tiers 4-5; Portal #3 (optional, after Okuni's Kabuki Dance) opens the top tier (Tier 6). Clear all three before the point of no return so you're not locked out of upgrades for the endgame. (Details cross-verified against Vandal, Maxroll, allthings.how and PatchCrazy, as of October 8, 2026.)

What is an Oni Portal in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

An Oni Portal (the in-game menu also calls them Oni Gates) is a hidden gateway into the Oni Realm — an optional, self-contained challenge area tucked under the streets and ruins of Eastern Kyoto. You don't find them by stumbling into a door; you reveal them. Each portal sits at a dead-end marked on your map, and you expose it by standing on the spot and triggering Oni Vision (the same ability you use to spot destructibles and hidden glyphs) at an Oni Glyph.

Inside, the format is always the same: a short layout where blocks sit in your path, you shoot them with the Oni Bow to shift or raise them into bridges, fight or slip past a few Genma, and then make contact with a floating Dark Mass at the end. That Dark Mass is the payload — it's what unlocks a new block of the skill tree.

Three things matter about Oni Portals, and most of the confusion online comes from not knowing them:

  • They are tied to the skill tree, not just loot. Grabbing the Dark Mass flips the on-screen banner "New Enhancements Available at Spirit Mirrors" and unlocks a fresh block of purchasable skills everywhere in the game.
  • They hand you upgrade materials and, for the later portals, an Oni Stone — the scarce currency that unlocks and upgrades your Special (Oni) Skills like Oni Vision, Oni Strength and Oni Awakening. For context on the full currency system, see our souls and upgrades explainer.
  • Only the first one is part of the story. The other two are optional side content you have to go looking for.

What do the Oni Portals unlock? (which skill tiers)

This is the whole reason to care. The Onimusha skill tree is stacked in tiers, and the upper rows stay greyed out until you open them manually — the Oni Portals are the keys. A common point of confusion online is players assuming the tiers unlock automatically with story progress; they don't. You have to physically reach each Dark Mass.

The tier mapping, cross-checked against Maxroll's and allthings.how's skill guides, breaks down like this:

  • Portal #1 → Tier 3 unlock. Opened during A Strength in Refuge. This is the one the game walks you into.
  • Portal #2 → Tiers 4-5 unlock. Becomes reachable after the mission The Roots of All Evil.
  • Portal #3 → top tier (Tier 6) unlock — the high-end nodes. Becomes reachable after Okuni's Kabuki Dance.

The portals become available in that order as the story advances — each is gated behind a progressively later mission, so you'll always open #1 first, then #2, then #3. (Sources differ on whether finishing one is a hard prerequisite for the next, but because the gating is mission-based, in practice you tackle them in sequence.) The top tiers hold some of the strongest options in the game, so a player who never finds Portals #2 and #3 is permanently stuck on the bottom third of every skill line. One Reddit player summed up the feeling of finally doing them late: "Unlocked two Oni Portals one after another and upgraded like 10 times in a row, feels like a whole new game now."

Why the tiers matter so much: the lower tiers mostly give you the moves (new attacks, a longer combo string, a parry), while the higher tiers give you the multipliers — bigger Issen windows, faster Oni Gauge fill, extra charges on your Oni Armament. Skipping Tiers 4-6 doesn't just leave a few skills unbought; it caps the ceiling on every build archetype, which is why under-geared late-game runs feel like a grind. Alongside the tier unlock, the later portals also drop an Oni Stone and a handful of upgrade materials. Oni Stones are scarce — they can't be bought and don't appear in ordinary material chests — so missing them stings if you're hunting the "learn and upgrade all special skills" trophies. If you want the priority order for spending those unlocks once they open, our best skills guide ranks what to grab first.

Eastern Kyoto overview map in Onimusha: Way of the Sword with two Oni Portal areas highlighted

Oni Portal #1 location — A Strength in Refuge (mandatory)

Where: inside the well in the compound south of the fields in Eastern Kyoto. When: automatically, during the story mission A Strength in Refuge.

You cannot miss this one — it's on the critical path. The mission routes you to the portal as part of Musashi's push to empower himself for the fights ahead, so the game effectively teaches you the Oni Realm format here before ever asking you to find one on your own.

Inside: climb the ladder into the crawl space. The door ahead is locked — step to its side, find the gap in the fence, and shoot the lock through the opening to open the Oni Sanctuary. Drop down, turn right, shoot the block in your path to clear the way, deal with the handful of Genma that spawn, and continue until you reach the Dark Mass. Absorb it to unlock the Tier 3 block of the skill tree plus a batch of upgrade materials.

Tip: if you have a couple of Power Stones spare when the marker appears, buy a movement skill in your Basic Skills menu first — the Eastern Kyoto hub is large and you'll be backtracking across it to reach the other two portals. A little extra sprint speed saves real time on the round trips.

Because this portal is mandatory, it's also the one that sets the trap: the game shows you an Oni Portal, lets you clear it effortlessly inside a guided mission, and then never hand-holds you to the next two. Plenty of players finish A Strength in Refuge, see "New Enhancements Available at Spirit Mirrors," assume that's the whole system, and move on — not realising there are two more portals, and two more tiers, waiting out in the open world.

Oni Portal #2 location — Kamo River island (optional, missable)

Where: on the Kamo River island in Eastern Kyoto. When: after completing The Roots of All Evil.

This is the first portal you have to actively go find — and it's behind the obstacle that traps the most players. To reach the island you need the Oni Agility wall-run, which you earn earlier in The Roots of All Evil; it's what lets you cross the gap to the crawl space. This is exactly the spot the community gets stuck on: there's a broken section of bridge just south of the west Malice gate with a runnable wall that carries you across to the island. Several players admitted they ran past it "a hundred times" and assumed the area would open later as part of a mission. It won't — you have to spot the wall-run and take it yourself.

Inside: work through the crawl space, dealing with the Genma along the way; it's worth breaking the Malice Barrier here so the trip back out is quicker. At the end, climb the ladder and enter the portal. Shoot the block to raise or shift it into a bridge, cross the gap, and grab the Dark Mass to unlock Tiers 4-5, an Oni Stone and more upgrade materials. This is the single biggest jump in the game — two tiers at once — so it's the portal that most transforms how your character plays, and the one it hurts most to skip.

Oni Portal #3 location — northeastern Eastern Kyoto (optional, missable)

Where: in the northeastern corner of the Eastern Kyoto map, inside a well, revealed after activating the nearby Oni Glyph. When: after Okuni's Kabuki Dance.

This portal unlocks the top tier (Tier 6) of the skill tree — the strongest nodes in the game — so it's the one you least want to leave unopened. You reach it by activating the Oni Glyph in the northeast corner of the map, then dropping into the well just west of it.

Inside: activate the Glyph and wall-run across the first wall. The moment you land, turn around and shoot the block behind you to reposition it so it forms the next stretch of path. Before the second wall-run, shoot the block directly ahead to clear it. Then wall-run the second wall to reach the final cloud of darkness — the Dark Mass — and absorb it for the top-tier unlock, a third Oni Stone and materials. The block-and-wall-run choreography here is tighter than the earlier portals, so if a jump fails, line up the shot first and run second rather than trying to do both on the move.

Some routes to this portal pass through a temple complex with a spider blocking the courtyard (use the crawl space on the left to get around it) and a fight against a Byakue mini-boss before the final corridor opens — so expect a short combat stretch, not just a puzzle.

The mistake to avoid: don't save the Oni Portals for last

The single biggest Oni Portal error is treating #2 and #3 as cleanup you'll do "after the story." Because the game never gates main progression on them, it's completely possible to reach the point of no return — and even the final mission — with two portals still unopened. Players report doing exactly that:

  • "I didn't finish the Oni Portals until right before the final mission… I had been playing up to that point with only half the available moves in the game."
  • "I got all the way to the second-to-last mission before I realized I needed to go around the other side of the sandbar to get through that one gate."

The fix is simple: the moment a new tier becomes available (after The Roots of All Evil and again after Okuni's Kabuki Dance), go back and clear the matching portal before pushing the next story beat. You'll fight the harder mid-to-late encounters with your full toolkit instead of a half-built one, and you won't be scrambling to find hidden wall-runs under endgame pressure. The abilities you unlock — and the smoothness of the back half — are worth the detour every time.

If you've already blown past them, don't panic: you can still free-roam Eastern Kyoto before the final boss and mop up both missing portals. Just do it before you commit to New Game+ / Carnage, because while skill-tree purchases carry over, your gear upgrades and Red Souls reset — so you want every skill unlocked on your first clear.

FAQ

How many Oni Portals are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword? There are three Oni Portals, all located in the Eastern Kyoto hub. Portal #1 is part of the story mission A Strength in Refuge; Portals #2 and #3 are optional and missable.

What do Oni Portals unlock? Each portal ends at a Dark Mass that unlocks a new skill-tree tier — Portal #1 opens Tier 3, Portal #2 opens Tiers 4-5, and Portal #3 opens the top tier (Tier 6) — and flips the "New Enhancements Available at Spirit Mirrors" banner so you can buy them. The portals also award upgrade materials, and the later two each give an Oni Stone.

Can you miss the Oni Portals? You can't miss the first one — it's mandatory story content. The second and third are optional side content with hidden entrances (a broken-bridge wall-run to the Kamo River island, and a well in the northeast), and many players reach the final mission without finding them. Clear them as soon as each new tier unlocks.

How do you open an Oni Portal? Head to the portal icon on your map, stand on the marked spot, and use Oni Vision at the Oni Glyph to open it. Inside the Oni Realm, shoot the blocks with your Oni Bow to clear a path, then make contact with the Dark Mass at the end.

Do I need a special ability to reach the Oni Portals? Oni Portal #2 on the Kamo River island requires Oni Agility to cross the river and a wall-run across a broken bridge section south of the west Malice gate. Portals #1 and #3 only need Oni Vision to reveal and open them.

Do Oni Portal unlocks carry into New Game+? Yes. Skill-tree purchases (including the tiers these portals unlock) carry over into Carnage/New Game+, but gear upgrades, upgrade materials and unspent Red Souls reset — so unlock and spend before starting a new cycle.
