Updated for 3.29.2 "Curse of the Allflame" (league launched 24 July 2026; last verified 1 September 2026). Bestiary is Path of Exile's "blue-collar" farm — low investment, low map-tier requirement, and it prints steady currency without touching Charts or Voyages. This guide covers exactly how Einhar, the Menagerie and beastcrafting work in 3.29, the recipes that actually make money, the best Atlas nodes and scarabs, and the three things 3.29 changed about beasts.

Quick answer: is Bestiary worth farming in 3.29?
Yes. Bestiary is one of the most consistent low-cost currency lanes this league. Maxroll rates the Red Maps Bestiary strategy "Difficulty Average, Investment Low, Profitability High, Management High" — meaning your currency-per-map is strong, but you're clicking a lot (capturing beasts and running crafts). You make money two ways: selling captured Red Beasts and Talismans on the trade market, or running high-value beastcrafts (imprints, item splits, the new Talisman craft) on gear you or other players supply.
Three things every 3.29 farmer needs to know up front:
- Talismans are now a Bestiary reward. 3.29 moved Talismans out of the general drop pool — they now drop from Red Beasts and Bestiary Bosses, and each Talisman is tied to a specific beast. This is the single biggest change to why you'd farm beasts this league.
- Sockets are white by default in 3.29, so the old "Bestiary craft for a stack of 8 Chromatic Orbs" recipe is gone — it was replaced with a craft that makes a Rare Four-Linked Helmet.
- A crafting bench was added to the Menagerie in patch 3.29.2, so you no longer have to portal home to bench-craft between beast runs.
New to the mechanic? Bestiary pairs well with the rest of the 3.29 map-farm rotation. If you're still picking a lane, start with our best currency farming strategies for 3.29.
How Bestiary works: Einhar, the Menagerie and the Blood Altar
Einhar Frey is the beast-hunter NPC. He only shows up in an area that contains capturable beasts (monsters carrying Bestiary mods). When a beast drops low, Einhar throws a net and captures it alive; captured beasts are stored in your Menagerie, the hub area you unlock by finishing his first quest in Act 2.
The Menagerie holds the Blood Altar — the stone plate where beastcrafting happens. Each recipe works the same way:
- You pick a recipe from the Blood Altar's list.
- It consumes four captured beasts — typically one specific Red (unique-named) Beast plus three Rare "Yellow" Beasts.
- Those beasts are released into the arena and you have to kill them to finish the craft.
- If you die during the fight, the recipe fails and the beasts are lost. Beastcrafting is one of the few crafting systems in the game you can actually lose.
Two quality-of-life notes that matter in 3.29: Einhar can now identify items for you in the Menagerie, and as of 3.29.2 there's a crafting bench in the Menagerie too, so imprint-and-slam workflows no longer bounce you back to your hideout.
Red Beasts vs Yellow Beasts
- Yellow (Rare) Beasts are the common fuel — most recipes want three of them.
- Red Beasts are the rare, named ones (e.g. Craicic Croaker, Fenumal Plagued Arachnid, The Black Mórrigan). Each Red Beast enables a specific craft, so a Red Beast is the "key ingredient" — and it's the Red Beast you sell on the trade market when you don't want to craft yourself. In 3.29, Bestiary Boss area level now matches the level of the Red Beast you used to open the portal, so higher-level Red Beasts mean tougher, higher-reward boss fights.
The 4 Spirit Beasts and their Aspect skills
At the top of the food chain are the four endgame Spirit Beasts. Each is a mini-boss you capture, and each grants a permanent Aspect skill you can beastcraft onto gear:
| Spirit Beast | Aspect skill granted |
|---|---|
| Saqawal, First of the Sky | Aspect of the Avian |
| Farrul, First of the Plains | Aspect of the Cat |
| Craiceann, First of the Deep | Aspect of the Crab |
| Fenumus, First of the Night | Aspect of the Spider |
Aspect of the Cat (Farrul) is the perennial money craft — it's a staple on high-end builds for its charge and evasion uptime — so a captured Farrul, or the Aspect craft itself, sells reliably.
Best beastcrafting recipes that make currency
These are the recipes worth farming toward. The Red Beast that enables each one is the ingredient you hunt for (or buy):
| Recipe | Key Red Beast | Why it makes money |
|---|---|---|
| Imprint a Magic item | Craicic Croaker (renamed from Craicic Chimeral in 3.29) | Saves a "before" copy of a magic item so you can gamble a slam and restore on a miss — the classic imprint craft |
| Split an item into two | Fenumal Plagued Arachnid | Turns one good rare base into two, doubling a high-ilvl base's value |
| Split into 3 items, two mods each | Fenumal Plagued Arachnid + Black Mórrigan | Splinters a fractured/synth base into several sellable pieces |
| Add maximum links | Craicic Sand Spitter + Black Mórrigan | Cheap way to hit links on a good base |
| Aspect of the Cat / Spider / Crab / Avian | Farrul / Fenumus / Craiceann / Saqawal | Adds a chase Aspect mod players pay a premium for |
| "Suffixes Cannot Be Changed" | Wild Bristle Matron | A metamod-style protection craft used in high-end crafting chains |
| Craft a new Talisman | The Black Mórrigan | New in 3.29 — the way to make Talismans now that they're beast-locked |
Maxroll's rule of thumb: the biggest beastcrafting profits come from imprinting expensive modifiers and splitting high-item-level 6-linked bases. When a slam is worth divines if it hits, an imprint that lets you retry is worth real currency.
Turning beastcrafts into trade currency? Beastcrafting output (split bases, Aspect gear, imprinted rares) sells for Divine Orbs. If you'd rather skip the grind and buy the currency to craft or trade with, PoE Divine Orbs with instant delivery are the fast lane.
Best Atlas passives and scarabs for Bestiary in 3.29
Bestiary needs only one small Atlas cluster to sustain, which is why it's a "blue-collar" farm — you're not committing your whole tree.
Core Atlas passive nodes (effects verbatim from poedb):
- Bestiary Chance — "Your Maps have +8% chance to contain Einhar"
- Eternal Hunt — "Your Maps have +20% chance to contain Einhar"
- Big Game — "Yellow Beasts in your Maps have 15% chance to be replaced with Red Beasts" (this is the value node — Red Beasts are what you sell)
- Bestiary Red Beast Chance — "Your Maps that contain capturable Beasts have 5% chance to contain an additional Red Beast"
- Bestiary Red Beast Pair Chance — "Red Beasts in your Maps have 4% chance to appear in Pairs"
- Mighty Hunter — keeps Einhar around longer and hitting harder, plus The Hunt for Saqawal / Fenumus / Farrul / Craiceann nodes if you're farming a specific Spirit Beast.
Bestiary Scarabs (effects verbatim from poedb):
- Bestiary Scarab — "Area contains Einhar"
- Bestiary Scarab of the Herd — "Area contains 5 additional Red Beasts if it contains Einhar" (the income multiplier)
- Bestiary Scarab of Duplicating — "Create a copy of Beasts captured in Area" (doubles your capture output)
A proven Red Maps setup from Maxroll: 4× Bestiary Scarab of the Herd + 2× Bestiary Scarab of Duplicating + 2× Kalguuran Scarab. The Herd scarabs flood the map with Red Beasts, Duplicating clones every capture, and the Kalguuran scarabs add a currency-drop layer on top. You don't need high-tier maps — Bestiary works from low red maps, which is why it's cheap to sustain.

What 3.29 changed about beasts (the info-gain)
If you're returning from a previous league, three changes matter:
- Talismans are now beast-locked. Straight from the 3.29.0 patch notes: "Talismans have a chance to drop from Red Beasts or Bestiary Bosses, and each Talisman is tied to a specific Beast." Unique Talismans left the core drop pool entirely — they now come from Bestiary Bosses or the new Black Mórrigan Talisman craft. The reworked Eyes of the Greatwolf can roll up to 100% increased Enchantment Modifier Magnitudes, which is why Bestiary Bosses are worth killing this league.
- The socket-colour beastcraft is dead. Because 3.29 made every socket white by default, the old Bestiary option that produced a stack of 8 Chromatic Orbs was replaced — it now creates a Rare Four-Linked Helmet instead. If you followed a pre-3.29 guide that told you to farm chromatics via beasts, that route no longer exists. (For the full picture on what white sockets did to Chromatic Orbs, see our 3.29 socket colours explainer.)
- The Craicic Chimeral was renamed Craicic Croaker — same beast, same imprint craft, new name. Don't panic when the imprint recipe references a "Croaker."
Bestiary itself took no core rework in 3.29 — no nerf to how it prints, unlike Breach (which lost its Mirage ceiling this league). It's the same reliable farm it's always been, now with a Talisman-shaped reason to actually chase Red Beasts.
How Bestiary compares to the other 3.29 farms
Bestiary sits in the same "consistent, low-skill-floor" tier as Expedition and Incursion. Where they differ:
- Bestiary — sell Red Beasts/Talismans or run crafts; minimal Atlas investment; management-heavy (lots of clicking).
- Expedition — Tujen converts artifacts straight into raw currency, no crafting step; the most hands-off of the three.
- Incursion / Alva — build temples and sell the door; cheapest to start.
- Harvest — higher investment, scales harder, feeds crafting via Lifeforce.
If you want a boss carried instead of farmed — a Spirit Beast, a pinnacle, or a league-start catch-up — that's what PoE boosting and carries exist for.
Where to sell and how to price
Never quote a static price on beasts or currency — the barter economy floats hard through a league. Check the live rate on poe.ninja before you list Red Beasts, Talismans or Aspect crafts, and price a hair under the cheapest live listing to move stock fast. The high-liquidity items are Farrul (Aspect of the Cat), the Spirit Beasts generally, and any Red Beast tied to a currently-meta Talisman.
FAQ
Is Bestiary farming still good in 3.29? Yes. It took no core nerf this league and now has an extra income source — Talismans, which drop only from Red Beasts and Bestiary Bosses in 3.29. Maxroll rates the Red Maps Bestiary strategy "Difficulty Average, Investment Low, Profitability High, Management High." It's one of the most reliable low-cost currency lanes right now.
How do you make currency from beasts? Two ways. Either sell captured Red Beasts and Talismans directly on the trade market, or run high-value beastcrafts — imprinting expensive modifiers, splitting high-item-level 6-linked bases, or adding an Aspect skill — and sell the crafted item. Imprints and splits are the biggest earners.
What is the best Bestiary scarab? The Bestiary Scarab of the Herd ("Area contains 5 additional Red Beasts if it contains Einhar") is the income multiplier, paired with the Bestiary Scarab of Duplicating to clone every capture. A common Red Maps setup is 4× Herd + 2× Duplicating + 2× Kalguuran.
Did 3.29 change beastcrafting? The core system is unchanged, but three things shifted: Talismans now drop from Red Beasts and Bestiary Bosses (and each is tied to a specific beast); the socket-colour beastcraft was replaced with a Rare Four-Linked Helmet craft because sockets are white by default; and the Craicic Chimeral was renamed the Craicic Croaker. A crafting bench was also added to the Menagerie in 3.29.2.
What are the four Spirit Beasts? Saqawal (Aspect of the Avian), Farrul (Aspect of the Cat), Craiceann (Aspect of the Crab) and Fenumus (Aspect of the Spider). Each is an endgame beast you capture to unlock its Aspect craft; Farrul's Aspect of the Cat is the most valuable of the four.
Can you lose beasts when crafting? Yes. A beastcrafting recipe releases the sacrificed beasts into the Blood Altar arena and you must kill them to complete the craft. If you die during the fight, the recipe fails and those beasts are gone — one of the only crafting systems in PoE where a mistake costs you the materials.
