PoE 6-Link & 6-Socket Vendor Recipe (3.29): How to Get Jeweller's Orbs & Orbs of Fusing

Path of Exile crafting bench in a hideout with the socket and link crafting options open — where Jeweller's Orbs, Orbs of Fusing and Chromatic Orbs are spent to change an item's sockets, links and colours in patch 3.29

Every league, thousands of exiles alt-tab to Google the same question: how many Jeweller's Orbs do you get for a 6-socket item, and how many Orbs of Fusing for a 6-link? In Path of Exile 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" (league launched 2026-07-24, latest patch 3.29.3 on 2026-08-12) the answer matters more than usual, because 3.29 shipped the biggest socket overhaul in years — sockets are now white by default. That change made a lot of players assume the classic vendor recipes were gutted. They weren't. This guide gives you the exact numbers, confirms what 3.29 did and didn't break, and tells you when vendoring an item is smart and when it quietly throws away currency.

TL;DR — Quick Answer: Sell any 6-socket item to a town vendor and you get 7 Jeweller's Orbs. Sell any 6-linked item and you get 20 Orbs of Fusing (the 6-link recipe outranks the 6-socket one — you get Fusings, not Jeweller's). Sell an item with 3 sockets linked Red-Green-Blue and you get 1 Chromatic Orb. All three recipes accept any rarity or quality and all three still work in 3.29 — the patch notes changed nothing about them. What changed is the economy around them: sockets now roll white by default, so linked R-G-B items are rarer, and Chromatic Orbs are no longer vendor-bought — which makes the RGB recipe worth more per proc than in 3.28, not less. What are the socket vendor recipes in Path of Exile?

Vendor recipes are fixed trades: hand a specific set of items to any town vendor (Nessa, Tarkleigh, or any hideout master) and the game returns a guaranteed reward — no crafting bench, no gambling, no trade chat. The three socket recipes are among the first every player learns because they turn otherwise-vendor-trash gear into usable crafting currency.

They have survived essentially unchanged since the game's early days, and — importantly for this league — the 3.29 patch notes make no change to any of them. Maxroll's beginner vendor-recipe resource still lists the core of it plainly: "You can vendor any 6-link item for 20 Orb of Fusings" (Maxroll, Important Vendor Recipes for Beginners). What follows is each recipe, the exact reward, and the 3.29 context you need so you don't misplay it.

The 6-socket recipe: 7 Jeweller's Orbs

Sell any single item that has six sockets — white, magic, rare, or unique, any quality — and the vendor gives you 7 Jeweller's Orbs. That's it. One 6-socket item in, seven Jeweller's Orbs out.

A few details that trip people up:

  • It must be six sockets, not six links. A body armour or two-handed weapon with six unconnected sockets counts. If those six sockets happen to be linked, you fall into the higher recipe instead (see below).
  • Only three base types can even roll six sockets: body armours, two-handed weapons, and… that's it for the standard 6-socket recipe — one-handed weapons, shields, helmets, gloves and boots cap at four (bows and staves count as two-handed). So the item you're vendoring is almost always a body armour or a big weapon.
  • Rarity and quality don't matter. A white 6-socket base works exactly as well as a corrupted rare.

Item level requirement to roll six sockets naturally: an item needs item level 50 for a Jeweller's Orb to have any chance of hitting six sockets. Below that, you physically cannot roll a 6-socket item by chance — which is why the vendor recipe is a reliable "floor" for any high-ilvl body armour you don't want.

Since a Jeweller's Orb is a bread-and-butter crafting currency (it rerolls the number of sockets on an item), seven of them for one junk 6-socket base is a genuinely good early-league conversion. If you would rather skip the grind entirely, timesaver.gg keeps PoE currency in stock for instant delivery.

The 6-link recipe: 20 Orbs of Fusing

Path of Exile Chromatic Orb tooltip — Reforges the colour of sockets on an item, the currency the RGB linked-socket vendor recipe rewards, now rare in 3.29

Sell any item whose six sockets are all linked together — a true 6-link — and you get 20 Orbs of Fusing. Again, any rarity, any quality.

This is the recipe that matters most for your wallet, and it comes with the single most important warning in this whole guide: the 6-link recipe overrides the 6-socket recipe. If your item is 6-linked, the vendor pays you 20 Fusings, not 7 Jeweller's Orbs — the game always applies the higher-value recipe. You cannot get both, and you cannot "downgrade" to the Jeweller's payout.

That leads directly to the classic beginner mistake, which even veterans hit when clearing inventory fast. Maxroll flags it explicitly: "this recipe can reduce the value if you're not careful — strongboxes tend to drop mirrored items like 6 sockets / 6 links and you might accidentally vendor" something worth far more than 20 Fusings. A real 6-linked body armour with a good base can be worth several Divine Orbs on the trade market — vendoring it for 20 Fusings would be lighting currency on fire. See "When you should NOT vendor" below before you sell anything 6-linked.

Twenty Orbs of Fusing is still a meaningful chunk of currency, though — Fusings reroll the links between sockets, and a self-found player chasing their own 6-link burns through them fast. For that grind, PoE currency and Fusings are available on tap if you'd rather buy the links than gamble for them.

The RGB recipe: 1 Chromatic Orb (and why it's better in 3.29)

Sell any item that has three sockets linked in the Red-Green-Blue colour combination and you get 1 Chromatic Orb. The item can have more than three sockets — it just needs one linked R-G-B group somewhere on it.

For years this was the recipe everyone ignored, because Chromatic Orbs were dirt-cheap and vendor-bought. That is no longer true in 3.29. The Curse of the Allflame socket overhaul changed the economics completely, and this is the part most old guides get wrong:

  • Sockets now roll white by default. As the community's 3.29 patch-notes summary put it bluntly, "Item Sockets are now always White by default" (r/PathOfExileBuilds, 3.29 patch-notes TL;DR thread). Each socket generated on an item has only a small chance to roll Red, Green or Blue, scaling with item level.
  • Chromatic Orbs are now rare. They can no longer be bought from town vendors for Jeweller's Orbs, their drop rate was cut, and their Currency Exchange gold fee went up.
  • Colour matching is now a bonus, not a gate. Any gem fits any socket regardless of colour; a gem sitting in a matching R/G/B socket just gains +10% quality.

Put those together and the RGB vendor recipe flips from junk to genuinely worth doing. Because coloured sockets are rare now, a naturally-linked R-G-B item shows up far less often — so the recipe fires less. But every Chromatic Orb it hands you is worth much more than it was in 3.28. Never repeat the old "chromatics are worthless, don't bother" line — in 3.29 that advice is actively wrong. We break down the full socket-colour system in our PoE 3.29 socket colours explainer.

Did 3.29's white-socket overhaul break these recipes?

No. This is the single most-searched worry about socket vendoring this league, so let's be precise about what the 3.29 patch actually touched:

  • 6-socket → 7 Jeweller's Orbs — unchanged. The recipe only ever checked socket count, not colour.
  • 6-link → 20 Orbs of Fusing — unchanged. It only checks that the six sockets are linked.
  • RGB-linked → 1 Chromatic Orb — unchanged as a recipe. The reward is the same; the value of that reward went up.

What 3.29 changed sits around the recipes, not inside them:

  • Currency that adds or modifies sockets now defaults to white. Jeweller's Orbs, Orbs of Binding, Tainted Jeweller's Orbs and standard crafting-bench socket crafts all generate white sockets by default now.
  • The old fixed-colour crafting-bench recipes were removed and replaced with new ones that guarantee at least 2, 3, or 4 non-white sockets for 5, 20, or 75 Chromatic Orbs respectively.
  • Vaal Orb's "turn a socket white" corruption outcome was removed — a Vaal Orb now turns a random white socket non-white instead.

None of that alters what a vendor pays you for a 6-socket, 6-link, or RGB-linked item. The recipes are safe; only the surrounding meta shifted.

How do you actually get a 6-socket or 6-link item to vendor?

Path of Exile vendor sell window showing a six-linked item and the Orb of Fusing tooltip — the 6-link recipe returns 20 Orbs of Fusing

You don't farm items specifically to vendor them — the reward isn't worth targeting. Instead, these recipes are a way to extract value from gear that lands in your lap:

  • Map and strongbox drops. High-tier maps and strongboxes routinely drop 6-socket bases and the occasional 6-link. This is exactly where the "accidental vendor" trap lives — check before you sell.
  • Jeweller's Orb / Fusing overspill. When you're gambling your own links and overshoot (you wanted a 5-link and hit six sockets on a base you're done with), the base becomes recipe fodder.
  • The crafting bench. Using the bench to craft sockets overrides the item-level socket restrictions — you can force six sockets onto a low-ilvl base at the bench, though in 3.29 those bench sockets come out white. The bench is where deterministic socket and colour work happens now (see the next section).

Practical rule: when you're clearing inventory, sort by socket count. Anything with six sockets is worth a two-second look — is it 6-linked (sell only if the base is junk), just 6-socket (7 Jeweller's, sell freely), or does it have an R-G-B link (1 Chromatic, sell freely)?

Deterministic socket-colour crafting in 3.29

Because coloured sockets are now rare, GGG added deterministic ways to force colours rather than spamming Chromatic Orbs and praying. At the crafting bench you can now pay Chromatic Orbs to guarantee a minimum number of non-white sockets:

  • 2 non-white sockets — 5 Chromatic Orbs
  • 3 non-white sockets — 20 Chromatic Orbs
  • 4 non-white sockets — 75 Chromatic Orbs

That is a huge quality-of-life change from the old "roll until you cry" Chromatic gamble, and it's the reason the vendor RGB recipe is worth banking Chromatics for — you now have a guaranteed sink for them. For a full-league-start currency plan that folds these recipes into a bigger farming loop, see our best currency farming strategies for 3.29, and if you'd rather skip straight to a geared character, PoE leveling and carry services cover it.

When you should NOT vendor an item

The recipes are a floor, not a ceiling. Vendor when the item is worth less than the recipe reward; keep it when it's worth more:

  • A good 6-linked base: a 6-link on a meta armour base (e.g. an evasion/energy-shield chest players want) sells for Divine Orbs, dwarfing 20 Fusings. List it on trade instead.
  • A high-ilvl rare with strong mods: the mods can be worth more than the sockets. Check before you strip it for the recipe.
  • A corrupted or influenced base you can craft on: the vendor recipe ignores all that value.
  • Anything from a strongbox during a Curse of the Allflame Chart or Voyage run — the seafloor content drops a lot of gear fast, and that's precisely when hasty vendoring costs you. If you're deep in the league mechanic, our Charts & Voyages currency guide covers what's actually worth pulling out.

Everything else — junk 6-socket bases, low-mod rares that happen to be 6-linked on a bad base, incidental R-G-B items — is exactly what the recipes exist for. This is the same "know the floor" logic behind the classic Chaos Recipe, and it stacks neatly with a broader gold and currency farming routine.

FAQ

How many Jeweller's Orbs do you get for a 6-socket item in PoE 3.29? Exactly 7 Jeweller's Orbs for any single 6-socket item, any rarity, any quality. The 3.29 patch did not change this recipe. If the item's six sockets are linked, you get 20 Orbs of Fusing instead — the 6-link recipe takes priority.

How many Orbs of Fusing do you get for a 6-link? 20 Orbs of Fusing per 6-linked item. But be careful: a genuinely good 6-linked base is usually worth several Divine Orbs on trade, so only vendor 6-links you'd otherwise throw away. Verify current values on poe.ninja before selling anything you're unsure about.

Does the 6-socket vendor recipe still work after the 3.29 white-socket changes? Yes. The socket overhaul made new sockets roll white by default and made Chromatic Orbs rare, but it changed nothing about the 6-socket, 6-link, or RGB vendor recipes. They pay out exactly as before.

What is the RGB vendor recipe and is it worth doing in 3.29? Sell an item with three sockets linked Red-Green-Blue and you get 1 Chromatic Orb. In 3.28 this was near-worthless; in 3.29 it's worth doing, because Chromatic Orbs are now rare (no longer vendor-bought) and you have a deterministic bench sink for them. Coloured sockets are rarer now, so R-G-B items appear less often — but each Chromatic is worth more.

Can helmets, gloves or boots give the 6-socket recipe? No. Only body armours and two-handed weapons can hold six sockets, so the 6-socket and 6-link recipes only ever come from those base types. Everything else caps at four sockets.

Do I need a certain item level to get six sockets? To roll six sockets naturally with a Jeweller's Orb, the item needs item level 50. The crafting bench overrides that restriction, letting you force six sockets onto a lower-ilvl base — though in 3.29 those bench-crafted sockets come out white.

Get your currency without the grind

The vendor recipes are the reliable floor on socket gear — but grinding your own 6-link with Fusings, or banking Chromatics for colours, still eats hours. If you'd rather spend that time mapping:
