Quick answer: In Path of Exile 2's 0.5 Runes of Aldur patch, most core crafting orbs now come in three power tiers — the base orb, a Greater version, and a Perfect version. Greater and Perfect orbs do the same thing as the base (add or swap a modifier), but they force the new modifier to roll at a higher minimum tier, so you stop wasting slams on garbage low rolls. A Greater Chaos Orb guarantees the added mod is at least modifier level 35; a Perfect Chaos Orb guarantees at least modifier level 50. That guarantee is why Perfect orbs are worth hundreds of times more than the base: on 2026-07-19 a Perfect Chaos Orb trades for about 5.3 Divine (~2,320 Exalted) and a Perfect Exalted Orb for about 2.9 Divine (~1,260 Exalted), while a plain Exalted Orb is the 1-Exalted base unit of the whole economy. (Live rates move daily — verify on poe.ninja or poe2scout before you buy.)
If you've picked up a Perfect Exalted Orb and had no idea whether to use it, hoard it, or sell it, this guide clears it up: what each tier actually does, the full ladder of tiered orbs, live prices, which ones are genuinely worth money, and the correct way to spend them so you don't torch your currency. Everything here is 0.5.4-current and fact-checked against the in-game tooltips and poe2db.

What are Greater and Perfect currency orbs in PoE2?
Path of Exile 2 doesn't have a crafting bench, so your gear is built almost entirely by slamming currency orbs and praying. To give players a bit more control, GGG built a tier ladder into the core crafting currencies. Take the Exalted Orb line as the example:
- Exalted Orb — adds one random modifier of any tier the item level allows.
- Greater Exalted Orb — adds one random modifier, but only from a raised minimum tier (no bottom-of-the-barrel rolls).
- Perfect Exalted Orb — adds one random modifier from an even higher minimum tier, so the roll lands near the top of the pool.
The action is identical at every tier — an Exalted Orb always adds a modifier, a Chaos Orb always swaps a modifier. The only thing that changes as you climb the ladder is the floor on how good the new modifier can roll. That's the whole idea: Perfect orbs don't let you choose the mod, they just stop the game from handing you a tier-8 roll when the item could support a tier-1.
There's also a separate Lesser tier on some currencies (a weaker version that shows up in the campaign) and, for socket currency, the Jeweller's line — which works completely differently (more on that below).
How do Greater and Perfect orbs actually work?
The mechanic is called a minimum modifier level. Every modifier in PoE2 has a level requirement — higher-level versions of a mod (higher tiers) roll bigger numbers. A base orb can roll any mod the item level unlocks, including weak low-level ones. A Greater or Perfect orb refuses to roll anything below its floor.
The Chaos Orb line is the clearest example, and the numbers are confirmed on poe2db and the PoE2 wiki:
| Orb | What it does | Minimum modifier level of the new mod |
|---|---|---|
| Chaos Orb | Removes a random mod, adds a random mod | Any tier |
| Greater Chaos Orb | Removes a random mod, adds a random mod | 35 |
| Perfect Chaos Orb | Removes a random mod, adds a random mod | 50 (Perfect Chaos itself drops at item level 79) |
The Exalted line follows the same pattern — Greater Exalted adds a mid-tier-floored modifier, Perfect Exalted adds a top-tier-floored one. The Regal, Transmutation and Augmentation lines all got the same Greater/Perfect treatment.
The critical thing to understand: the mod type is still random. A Perfect Exalted Orb on a caster body armour can still hand you a top-tier cold resistance roll when you wanted life. As one endgame crafter put it, using Perfect currency you "pray it takes the shit roll" — you're guaranteeing the tier, never the stat. That is exactly why the pros roll the affix they want with cheap base orbs first, then upgrade tiers (see the workflow section).
0.5 crafting cap you must know: an item can hold only one crafted modifier and one desecrated modifier at a time. Greater/Perfect slams add normal random mods (not crafted mods), so they aren't limited by that rule — but Essence and Runic Alloy crafts are, so plan the single crafted slot before you start slamming.
The full tiered-orb list — base, Greater, Perfect
Here's the practical map of which core orbs have tiers and what the base action is. Full mechanics for each base orb are in our dedicated guides, linked below.
| Base orb | Action (base) | Has Greater? | Has Perfect? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exalted Orb | Adds a random mod to a Rare | ✅ | ✅ |
| Chaos Orb | Swaps a random mod on a Rare | ✅ | ✅ |
| Regal Orb | Upgrades Magic → Rare, adds a mod | ✅ | ✅ |
| Orb of Augmentation | Adds a mod to a Magic item | ✅ | ✅ |
| Orb of Transmutation | Upgrades Normal → Magic | ✅ | ✅ |
| Jeweller's Orb | Adds a support socket to a skill gem | ✅ (Greater) | ✅ (Perfect) |
The Jeweller's line is the odd one out — its tiers control socket count, not modifier tier. We'll cover that separately.
What are Greater and Perfect orbs worth right now?
Prices move every day as the league matures and Exalted floods the market, so treat these as a live snapshot, not gospel. These are Runes of Aldur softcore rates pulled on 2026-07-19 (poe2scout), normalised at 1 Divine ≈ 440 Exalted:
| Currency | ≈ Exalted | ≈ Divine |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect Chaos Orb | ~2,320 | ~5.3 |
| Perfect Exalted Orb | ~1,260 | ~2.9 |
| Divine Orb (reference) | 440 | 1.0 |
| Greater Chaos Orb | ~176 | ~0.40 |
| Perfect Jeweller's Orb | ~172 | ~0.39 |
| Chaos Orb | ~60 | ~0.14 |
| Greater Exalted Orb | ~7 | — |
| Exalted Orb | 1 (base unit) | — |
For scale, the two most expensive tradeable items in the league dwarf every crafting orb: a Mirror of Kalandra sits around 4,800 Divine and Hinekora's Lock around 1,160 Divine. Among crafting currency, though, the Perfect Chaos Orb is the single most valuable orb you can farm and sell right now.
Note the gap: a Perfect Chaos Orb (~2,320 Ex) is worth roughly 38 regular Chaos Orbs and a Perfect Exalted (~1,260 Ex) is worth over 1,200 regular Exalts. The tier premium is enormous — which changes how you should treat them when they drop.
Which tiered orbs are actually worth money?
Short version: Perfect Chaos and Perfect Exalted are the money-makers. Greater orbs are cheap utility. Base Exalts are loose change.
- Perfect Chaos / Perfect Exalted — real value (several Divine each). When one drops, your default should be sell it, unless you have a specific near-perfect endgame item to finish today. Most players earn far more by trading the Perfect orb than by gambling it on their own gear.
- Greater orbs — cheap but genuinely useful. Community consensus this league is blunt: it's now "cheaper to spam at least Greater" Chaos on endgame rares than to spam base Chaos and eat low rolls. Use them, don't hoard them.
- Base Exalted Orbs — the economy's pricing unit, and they "drop in value basically from minute 1." Don't sit on thousands; convert to Chaos or Divine when you have a stack. But they still have a real sink: you need regular Exalts to roll Waystones, Tablets and Strongboxes, where Greater/Perfect are overkill.
- Perfect Jeweller's Orb — worth ~0.4 Divine because it grants the 5th and final support socket on a skill gem. Valuable to any build chasing max sockets; sell spares.

How to use Greater & Perfect orbs without wasting currency
The mistake new crafters make is slamming a Perfect Exalted Orb onto a raw base and hoping. Because the mod type is random, that's a coin flip on a several-Divine orb. Do it the way endgame players do:
- Roll the mod type you want with cheap base orbs first. Transmute + Augment (or Alchemy) until the affix you actually need appears. Lower-tier orbs weren't phased out by the tier system — they're your targeting step.
- Lock what you can. Use your single crafted-mod slot (Essence or Runic Alloy) on the guaranteed stat if one exists.
- Upgrade the tiers last. Once the right mods are present, use Greater/Perfect slams (paired with the right Omen — e.g. Omen of Greater Exaltation to add two mods at once) to push the numbers to the top of the pool.
- Know when to stop. Every Greater/Perfect slam is a gamble on a random mod type. On a near-finished, high-value item it's worth it. On a fresh base, you're lighting Divines on fire — buy a finished rare instead.
The honest rule: for most upgrades, buying a finished item on the trade site is cheaper than crafting one. Reserve Perfect orbs for the last 5% of a min-maxed piece — or for selling.
Where do Greater and Perfect orbs come from?
Greater and Perfect orbs drop directly from monsters and chests like any other currency — there's no upgrade recipe that turns three base orbs into a Greater. In 0.5 the drop floor was loosened so Greater orbs can appear as early as Act 4, and higher-tier Perfect orbs (Perfect Chaos drops at item level 79) come from juiced Tier 15+ maps and endgame content.
Since you can't craft them up, the reliable way to get a specific Perfect orb is the same as everything else in PoE2: farm currency density and buy it. Run high-tier maps loaded with one stacked mechanic (Expedition and Abyss are the strongest currency farms this patch), sell your drops on the Currency Exchange, and convert into whichever Perfect orb you need. If you'd rather skip the grind entirely, you can buy PoE2 currency directly and get straight to crafting.
Jeweller's Orbs — the tier system's exception
The Jeweller's line uses the Greater/Perfect naming but does something totally different. Instead of raising a modifier tier, Jeweller's Orbs add support-gem sockets to a skill gem:
- Greater Jeweller's Orb → takes a skill to 4 sockets.
- Perfect Jeweller's Orb → sets a skill to 5 sockets — the cap. It sets the gem to 5 (it doesn't add one), so you can apply it at any lower socket count and jump straight to max. There is no 6th socket.
Since 0.5, Jeweller's Orbs also work on skills granted by items, per the patch note: "By using a Jeweller's Orb on an item with a skill, you can increase the number of sockets for the skill granted by that item." Full farming routes are in our Perfect Jeweller's Orb guide and Greater Jeweller's Orb guide.

FAQ
What's the difference between a Chaos Orb and a Perfect Chaos Orb in PoE2? Both do the same action — remove one random modifier from a Rare item and add a new random one. The difference is the floor on the new mod: a base Chaos Orb can roll any tier, a Greater Chaos Orb guarantees at least modifier level 35, and a Perfect Chaos Orb guarantees at least modifier level 50. Perfect just stops you rolling low-tier junk; it doesn't let you pick which mod you get.
Do Perfect orbs guarantee the best possible item? No. They guarantee the tier of the new modifier is high, but the type of modifier is still random. A Perfect Exalted Orb can add a top-tier stat you don't want. That's why experienced crafters roll the affix they need with cheap orbs first and only upgrade tiers at the end.
Should I always use Greater or Perfect instead of the base orb? For finishing endgame rares, yes — it's often cheaper to spam Greater than to spam base and eat bad rolls. But for rolling Waystones, Tablets and Strongboxes, use regular Exalts; Greater/Perfect are wasted there. And never Perfect-slam a fresh base hoping for a specific mod — target the mod with cheap orbs first.
How much is a Perfect Chaos Orb worth? As of 2026-07-19 it trades for roughly 5.3 Divine (~2,320 Exalted) in Runes of Aldur softcore, making it the most valuable crafting orb in the league. Prices drift daily as the economy inflates — always price-check live on poe.ninja or poe2scout before buying or selling.
Where do Greater and Perfect orbs drop? They drop directly from monsters and chests — there's no recipe to upgrade base orbs into them. Greater orbs can drop as early as Act 4 in 0.5; Perfect orbs (Perfect Chaos is item level 79) come from juiced Tier 15+ maps and endgame content. The practical way to get a specific one is to farm currency and buy it on the Currency Exchange.
Is the Perfect Jeweller's Orb a crafting-tier orb? Not really. It uses the Perfect name but governs support-gem sockets, not modifier tiers — it sets a skill gem to 5 sockets (the cap). It's worth about 0.4 Divine because 5 sockets is a hard build breakpoint.
