Star Citizen Hauling Guide (Alpha 4.10): Best Cargo Ships, Contracts, and How to Make aUEC

Cargo hauling is the most beginner-friendly way to earn aUEC in Star Citizen Alpha 4.10.0 "Siege of Orison" (live since August 26, 2026): low risk, no combat skill required, and a clear reputation ladder that unlocks bigger payouts the more you fly. But 4.10 also changed the math — fuel prices went up, ship claim timers now scale with your ship's value, and some hauling contracts are still buggy. This guide covers the current hauling loop, the best cargo ships at every budget, how the reputation system actually works, and the patch-specific traps that cost new haulers money.

Quick answer: In Alpha 4.10, start hauling with a small ship (Cutlass Black 46 SCU or C1 Spirit 64 SCU) running Trainee/Rookie contracts inside Stanton to build reputation with Covalex, Ling Family Hauling, or Red Wind Linehaul. Graduate to a Freelancer MAX (120 SCU) for mid-tier Medium hauls, then a C2 Hercules (696 SCU) or Hull C (4,608 SCU) once you unlock Experienced/Senior contracts. Expect the reputation grind — not the flying — to be the real bottleneck, and remember aUEC can be wiped at any patch.

Note: Star Citizen is still in Alpha — there is no released 1.0. Every number here is for the current Alpha 4.10 build and can change with the next patch. aUEC is test currency: it can be wiped at any time with no reimbursement (a full wipe last hit on 4.8.0, May 14, 2026), so treat your balance as disposable.

What is hauling in Star Citizen?

Hauling is a career where you move bulk cargo from point A to point B for a contractor — the Persistent Universe equivalent of long-haul trucking in space. Per the Star Citizen Wiki, it's a "low risk – low reward profession" that rewards ships with a large cargo hold and efficient multi-stop routes.

There are two ways to haul:

  • Contract hauling — accept a mission from a hauling corporation (Covalex Shipping, Ling Family Hauling, or Red Wind Linehaul), pick up their cargo from a freight elevator, deliver it, and get paid a fixed aUEC reward plus reputation.
  • Out-of-contract (trade) hauling — buy commodities at a low price, fly them somewhere selling higher, and pocket the difference. No reputation required, and in a broken patch it's often more reliable than mission cargo.

Both use the same core loop, and both are legitimate, in-game ways to earn. This is the honest bottleneck to name up front: earning aUEC by hand is slow, and the reputation gate on high-paying contracts is why so many players ask "why can't I make money hauling?" The answer is almost always rank, not ship.

The 4.10 hauling loop, step by step

The mechanical loop is the same whether you're running a contract or your own cargo:

  • Accept a contract (via the contract manager / mobiGlas) or buy commodities at a Trading & Development Division (TDD) or shop kiosk.
  • Retrieve the cargo from the freight elevator in your hangar. Contract cargo appears on the freight elevator terminal automatically.
  • Load it onto your ship using a MaxLift Tractor Beam or a multi-tool with a tractor attachment. Bigger containers (up to 32 SCU) need a ship tractor or a snub.
  • Fly to the destination — a delivery station for a contract, or a higher-price market for a trade run.
  • Unload onto the destination freight elevator. For a contract, the freight terminal auto-collects the cargo and you submit the contract for payment. For trade cargo, you sell it at the local kiosk.

SCU is the unit that matters: 1 SCU (Standard Cargo Unit) holds 100 units of a commodity. A ship's cargo rating (e.g. "696 SCU") is its total capacity, and contracts specify both a total SCU and a maximum container size you must be able to carry.

Hauling contracts: ranks, sizes, and reputation

This is the part new players skip and then get stuck on. Every contract follows a naming pattern — Rank – (Direct) – Distance – Size — and each dimension changes the payout.

Distances (from shortest to longest):

  • Direct — only two locations (one pickup, one drop).
  • Planetary — locations within one planet's gravity well.
  • Solar — locations at different planets in the same system.
  • Interstellar — between solar systems (Stanton ↔ Pyro).

Contract sizes and what they demand:

SizeTotal cargoMax containerNotes
Extra SmallUp to 10 SCU1 SCU boxesAnything can carry it
Small~24 SCU (never over 26)4 SCUA Cutlass or C1 handles it
MediumUp to 126 SCU (Member); 200–600 SCU (Experienced+)8 SCU → 16 SCU at ExperiencedNeeds a real hauler
LargeOver 600 SCU32 SCUEffectively Hull C / C2 territory

Reputation is the gate. You start at rank 0 (Not Eligible) and climb by completing contracts with each corporation. The ladder, per the wiki:

LevelTitleUnlocks
1TraineeExtra Small, Direct
2Rookie+ Small, Planetary
3Junior+ Medium, Planetary
4MemberInterstellar hauls, Solar
5ExperiencedLarge hauls; Medium container size up to 16 SCU
6SeniorSenior-rank contracts
7MasterMaster-rank contracts

The practical takeaway: grind low-rank Direct hauls inside Stanton first. They're short, predictable, and each one builds reputation toward the interstellar and Large contracts that actually pay well. Reputation is per-corporation, so pick one (Red Wind Linehaul is commonly recommended for its interstellar routes) and stick with it until you unlock the high tiers.

Best cargo ships for hauling in Alpha 4.10

There is no single "best" hauler — the right ship depends on your rank and budget. Ship balance and cargo grids move every patch, so these are framed for hauling in Alpha 4.10 specifically.

ShipCargo (SCU)Best for
Drake Cutlass Black46Cheapest flexible starter; combat-capable, popular do-everything ship
Crusader C1 Spirit64Clean daily hauler for Small/early-Medium jobs; two 32-SCU grids
MISC Freelancer MAX120Dedicated mid-tier hauler; the sweet spot for Member-rank Medium contracts
Drake CaterpillarLarge multi-crewBig Medium/Large runs; needs a crew or tractor help to load fast
Crusader C2 Hercules696The industry-standard large hauler; strong single-run payout ceiling
MISC Hull C4,608 (144 × 32-SCU)The biggest flight-ready hauler — a "star train" for Large Solar contracts

Cargo figures verified against the Star Citizen Wiki: Cutlass Black (46 SCU), C1 Spirit (64 SCU), Freelancer MAX (120 SCU), C2 Hercules (696 SCU), and Hull C (144 32-SCU containers, ~4,608 SCU at full load).

Buy in-game or pledge? You can buy most of these at in-game ship shops (New Deal, Astro Armada, Crusader Showroom) with aUEC, or rent them at rental terminals in major spaceports — a smart way to try a hauler before committing. In-game-bought ships persist between patches unless there's a full wipe (4.8 wiped in-game-acquired ships). Real-money pledges are account-bound and survive wipes. Never quote a pledge USD price from a wiki or reseller — check the RSI store directly, because CIG changes prices and sale states constantly.

What Alpha 4.10 changed for haulers

4.10's patch notes carry several economy changes that directly affect your hauling profit:

  • Hydrogen & quantum fuel rebalance. CIG adjusted fuel tank capacities and consumption rates "to better align with ship sizes and roles." Fuel is a running cost on every haul, so refuel margins on long Solar/Interstellar routes shifted — budget for it.
  • ASOP claim timers now scale with ship value. Reclaiming a destroyed or stored ship takes longer the more valuable it is: "a light fighter comes back quickly while a capital hull takes considerably longer." Fitted weapons and racks now add to a ship's claim cost, too. A paid expedite exists but is capped at a tenth of the standard claim cost — a convenience fee, not a bypass. For haulers this matters if your big hauler gets destroyed: it's a long wait to get it back.
  • Ore & commodity containers added to Long Term Persistence. Cargo you acquire after 4.10 now persists into future builds (previously it could vanish on a version change). Note: ore pods that ship with a vehicle are item-recovery, not LTP.
  • A full loot-and-drop-rate pass. General containers now hold "vastly much more," which indirectly helps ground-loot side income between hauls.
  • Ordnance prices up 44–310%. Only relevant if you fit weapons — but it raises the loadout cost baked into your claim price.

The headline for haulers: fuel and ship-recovery costs went up, so thin-margin trade runs are thinner. Contract hauling (fixed payout, no cargo capital risk) is the safer earner in 4.10.

What's still broken in 4.10 (and the workaround)

Be honest about the state of the loop — this is where new haulers lose money and rage-quit. 4.10 shipped several hauling fixes, including a fix for "hauling missions would have no cargo to pick up at the collection location" and a fix for mission cargo missing from the freight manager terminal. But community reports through the patch cycle show cargo-spawn problems still crop up on some servers, echoing a long-standing 4.x pain point — as one player put it, "not a single mission will spawn its cargo at any collection location... I get 1 of 10 to drop and it is across servers."

Two practical rules:

  • If cargo doesn't spawn, check your pickup location and try a different server before rage-quitting. It's frequently a server-instance issue, not a lost mission.
  • When mission cargo is bugged, haul your own bought cargo instead. Trade hauling needs no reputation grind and, as players note, can even out-earn contracts on a good route — "can even make more money, with no rep grind needed."

Pyro cargo hauling in particular has been unreliable since Pyro launched; if you're new, stay in Stanton where routes are predictable and stations are easier to enter.

How much aUEC can you actually make hauling?

Straight answer: it depends on your rank, and per-hour numbers you see online are patch-specific estimates from third-party blogs — treat them as leads, not gospel. As of Alpha 4.10, community reports suggest low-rank Direct hauls net modest sums (tens of thousands of aUEC per run), while high-rank Large Solar contracts in a Hull C can pay in the low-hundreds of thousands — one player described a ~2,500 SCU Large Solar run paying 313k aUEC, though "because autoload is broken you'll lose 30–50 SCU at the very end and you'll get like 240k."

The lesson: raw payout looks big, but loading/unloading time and bugs eat your effective aUEC/hour. Hauling rewards patience and route optimization, not twitch skill. And because a wipe can zero your balance, don't hoard — spend earned aUEC on ships and components you'll keep using.

Is buying aUEC a shortcut? Read this first

Because the grind is real, players ask whether they can just buy aUEC. No — and it's worth understanding why. CIG's Terms of Service Rules of Conduct explicitly prohibit "gathering in-game virtual items or resources for sale outside the Game," performing "in-game services in exchange for payment outside the Game, e.g., power-leveling," and posting messages "to any third party site... to trade or sell... Virtual Goods... such as ships, 'insurance benefits,' Game credits." Selling or transferring your RSI account is banned too.

Plainly: buying aUEC, selling items, paid power-leveling, and account trading all violate the ToS, and advertising such a sale — on RSI or a third-party site — is itself a listed violation. Penalties are at RSI's discretion and can include account termination with no compensation. On top of that, aUEC is wipeable test currency — anything you "bought" can be deleted at the next full patch wipe with no reimbursement. The only durable, safe way to earn aUEC is to play the loops in-game.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to make aUEC hauling in Alpha 4.10? Grind short Direct hauls inside Stanton at Trainee/Rookie rank to build reputation fast, then move up to Medium and Large contracts as ranks unlock. When mission cargo bugs out, switch to buying and selling your own commodities — it needs no reputation and can out-earn contracts on a good route.

What is the best cargo ship for hauling in Star Citizen 4.10? For beginners, the Cutlass Black (46 SCU) or C1 Spirit (64 SCU). For mid-tier Medium contracts, the Freelancer MAX (120 SCU). For high-rank Large hauls, the C2 Hercules (696 SCU) or Hull C (4,608 SCU). Rent one at a spaceport rental terminal before you commit aUEC to buying it.

Why won't my hauling mission cargo spawn? This is a known, server-instance issue that has recurred across 4.x despite 4.10's fixes. Check the correct pickup location, and if the cargo still isn't there, relog or try a different server before abandoning the contract. If it keeps failing, haul your own bought cargo instead.

Does hauling reputation reset when I rank up or after a patch? Reputation is per-corporation and carries with your account like other progress, but a full wipe (as in 4.8) can reset in-game progress and zero your aUEC. Pledged (real-money) ships are never wiped; in-game-acquired ships and aUEC are at risk in a full wipe.

Can I buy aUEC to skip the grind? No. CIG's Terms of Service prohibit buying or selling aUEC, selling items, paid power-leveling, and account transfers, with penalties up to account termination. aUEC is also wipeable test currency with no reimbursement, so purchased balances aren't even safe. Earn it in-game.

Is trade hauling better than contract hauling in 4.10? Contract hauling has a fixed payout and no cargo capital risk, making it the safer 4.10 earner given higher fuel and ship-recovery costs. Trade hauling can pay more on the right route and needs no reputation — but you risk losing bought cargo to a 30k crash, so start small.
