The Smugglers event is live in Escape from Tarkov right now on patch 1.0.6.0.46010 (July 2026), and it's the fastest source of free high-tier loot on the map — if you know how to open what it drops. A new AI enemy type, the Smugglers, is roaming almost every map in groups of three, dropping Case keys and Locked cases that unpack into weapons, ammo, and armor. The catch: you can't crack a Locked case until you've progressed the event questline. This guide covers where Smugglers spawn, how to open the Locked case, all three event quests, and how to farm the whole thing before it disappears.

Quick answer: the Smugglers event in 30 seconds
- What it is — a returning limited-time event (live since 2026-07-11 on patch 1.0.6.0.46010). A new AI enemy, "Smugglers," spawns in groups of three across most maps.
- What they drop — Case keys and Locked cases (a 2×2 container). Event airdrops also carry Sealed weapon cases (5×2) stuffed with guns, mods, ammo, and meds.
- How to open a Locked case — you can't do it in raid. You unlock the craft by progressing the event questline (the recipe drops around the third quest), then combine the Locked case + Case key at Workbench Level 1 — a ~7–10 second craft — and right-click unpack.
- The 3 quests — That's a Great Plan, Walter (hand over 3 Locked cases), Chop the Thieving Hand (kill 25 Smugglers), Shell Game (turn in 15 contraband). Rewards are weapons, ammo, and armor.
- Do it now — Tarkov events aren't given an official end date and past Smugglers runs lasted roughly 2–4 weeks. Short on time? A Tarkov Quest & Kappa Boost clears the grindy kill/collection quests for you.
Wipe/patch status: This is an event on the current 1.0.6.0 live build — it is not the Season 1 "Kord Breach" seasonal launch (patch 1.1.0, still unannounced for an exact date), and it does not wipe your character. Farm it on your normal PMC.
What is the Smugglers event?
The Smugglers are back. The Official Escape from Tarkov Wiki logged the change on its Events page the day it dropped:
"Enemy type 'Smugglers' has returned."
— Official Escape from Tarkov Wiki, Events (2026)
Mechanically, Smugglers are a distinct AI enemy — think juiced-up Scavs kitted closer to Raiders. They wear Tier 4–5 body armor, carry real rifles, engage on sight, and move as a coordinated squad. They exist in both PvP and PvE modes. When you drop one, it can carry a Case key; the squads and event airdrops also seed Locked cases around the map.
The event layers three things onto the current build:
- A new enemy to hunt (the Smugglers themselves).
- Two exclusive containers — the Locked case and the Sealed weapon case — that only appear during the event.
- A short quest chain from Peacekeeper that gates the Locked-case craft and pays out strong gear.
Where do Smugglers spawn?
Per the 1.0.6.0.46010 patch data, Smugglers appear on every map except The Lab, and on Ground Zero only for players level 21+. They roam in groups of three near high-traffic loot areas. These are the maps in play:
| Map | Smugglers? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Customs | ✅ | Reliable near Big Red / ZB-13 — fast, popular farm |
| Shoreline | ✅ | Also holds the Smuggler's camp (top-right) for the collection quest |
| Woods | ✅ | Frequently seen running toward the sawmill |
| Interchange | ✅ | Power station and inside the stores |
| Lighthouse | ✅ | Reported around the villa where the Goons spawn |
| Streets of Tarkov | ✅ | Scattered — larger map, more hunting |
| Factory | ✅ | Tiny map = fastest kills-per-hour for Chop the Thieving Hand |
| Ground Zero | ⚠️ Lv21+ | Locked for low-level characters |
| The Lab | ❌ | No Smugglers here |
For the fastest kills, run Factory (small, dense) or Customs — if you're rusty on the latter, our Tarkov Customs map guide covers the key areas. For quest efficiency, Shoreline lets you kill Smugglers and work the camp objective in the same raid. One player farming the camp described the spot simply: the "Smuggler's camp is the top right spot on Shoreline."
How to fight Smugglers
They hit like Raiders, so treat them like Raiders:
- Bring penetration. With Tier 4–5 armor on them, minimum viable rounds are BP, M80, or M855A1 — cheap FMJ bounces.
- Use angles and elevation. Their group AI flanks; open-ground fights against three of them end badly.
- Loot carefully. The Case key is small and easy to miss — check rigs and pockets, not just the backpack.
- Protect your finds. Put Case keys and Locked cases in your secure container the moment you get them, so a bad extract doesn't cost you the run.
How do you open a Locked case in Tarkov?
This is the question flooding r/EscapefromTarkov, and the answer is not obvious in-game. Players kept looting a Locked case plus a Case key, checking the hideout, and finding no craft option — leading to a wave of "is it bugged?" posts. It isn't bugged.
You have to unlock the recipe through the event questline. As one player explained it, "You'll get the craft once you finish some quests from the new questline… you get that craft option at the start of the third quest." Until then, the Workbench won't show you anything to build.
Once the recipe is unlocked, opening a case is quick:
- Extract with both a Locked case and a Case key (they cannot be opened inside a raid).
- Go to your Workbench (Level 1 is enough).
- Run the craft that combines the Locked case + Case key — roughly a 7–10 second craft.
- Right-click → unpack the resulting case to spill the loot into your stash.
A few rules to remember: Locked cases cannot be sold on the Flea Market, and they are destroyed after unpacking, so there's no second use. If your Workbench isn't built yet, prioritize it — see our Tarkov hideout upgrade order guide to get there fast.
Locked case vs Sealed weapon case: what's the loot?
Two exclusive containers drop during the event, and they are not the same thing:
| Container | Size | How you get it | Contents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locked case | 2×2 | Smuggler drops + event airdrops | Needs a Case key + Workbench craft to open; mixed high-value loot |
| Sealed weapon case | 5×2 | Event airdrops | Opens to weapons, mods, ammo, meds, and stimulants |
The Sealed weapon case is the fatter payday — a 5×2 box that unpacks into a small arsenal — so chase event airdrops when you hear one inbound. Both containers are destroyed after unpacking and can't be flea-listed, so their value is purely what's inside.

The 3 Smugglers event quests
This event's chain runs through Peacekeeper and centers on three tasks. They aren't required for Kappa, but the rewards — weapons, ammo, and armor — are worth the effort, and the third quest is what unlocks your Locked-case craft.
| Quest | Objective | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| That's a Great Plan, Walter | Find and hand over 3 Locked cases | Teaches the loot loop; feeds the chain |
| Chop the Thieving Hand | Kill 25 Smugglers | The grind quest — farm Factory/Customs |
| Shell Game | Turn in 15 contraband items | Collection objective; Shoreline camp helps |
Priority order for efficiency: stack objectives per raid. On Shoreline you can kill Smugglers (Chop the Thieving Hand), grab their Locked cases (That's a Great Plan, Walter), and work the camp for contraband (Shell Game) in a single trip. On Factory, focus purely on the 25-kill count when Smuggler density is high.
If the kill count and collection grind is eating your evenings, that's exactly what a boost is for — a Tarkov Quest & Kappa Boost clears the event tasks (and the Kappa chain) on your account with a pro player.
How to farm the Smugglers event fast
A clean farm loop for the whole event:
- Kit a mid-tier raid — you don't need meta gear, but you do need penetrating ammo. Keep spare roubles for repeat kits, because farming three-man squads gets expensive.
- Pick a dense map — Factory for raw kills, Customs/Shoreline for kills + cases + camp.
- Bank keys and cases immediately — secure container, every time.
- Progress the questline to quest 3 to unlock the Locked-case craft, then convert your key+case backlog at the Workbench.
- Repeat until the quests are done, then keep farming Sealed weapon cases from airdrops for pure profit.
Running low on kit money after a few PvP-heavy raids is normal — Smugglers are geared and they shoot back. A stack of Tarkov Roubles keeps you in the fight without alt-tabbing to grind Scav runs, and if you're also pushing character progression, our Tarkov leveling guide pairs well with event XP.

When does the Smugglers event end?
Battlestate Games did not announce an end date — that's standard for Tarkov events. Based on past runs, expect a window of roughly 2–4 weeks. Treat every day as if it's the last: finish the three quests and unlock the Locked-case craft early so you're farming pure loot, not scrambling to open a stash full of cases after the event vanishes.
FAQ
What is the Smugglers event in Tarkov? It's a returning limited-time event, live since 2026-07-11 on patch 1.0.6.0.46010. A new AI enemy type — Smugglers — spawns in groups of three on most maps, dropping Case keys and Locked cases, alongside a three-quest Peacekeeper chain and exclusive airdrop loot.
How do you open a Locked case? You can't open it in raid, and you can't open it immediately. Progress the event questline until the craft recipe unlocks (around the third quest), then combine the Locked case with a Case key at Workbench Level 1 — a short ~7–10 second craft — and right-click unpack. If your Workbench shows no craft option, you simply haven't unlocked the recipe yet; it isn't a bug.
Where do Smugglers spawn? On every map except The Lab, with Ground Zero limited to level 21+. Factory and Customs are the fastest for kills; Shoreline is best for stacking quest objectives because it also holds the Smuggler's camp in the top-right.
Where do you get a Case key? Case keys drop off the Smugglers themselves. Kill the three-man squads and check their rig and pockets — the key is small and easy to overlook. Secure it immediately.
What are the Smugglers event quests? Three from Peacekeeper: That's a Great Plan, Walter (hand over 3 Locked cases), Chop the Thieving Hand (kill 25 Smugglers), and Shell Game (turn in 15 contraband). The third quest unlocks your Locked-case craft.
Does the Smugglers event wipe my account? No. It's an event on the current 1.0.6.0 live build, not the Season 1 "Kord Breach" seasonal launch. Your permanent character, hideout, and progress are untouched.
