WARDOGS Armor Tiers Explained: Is Level 4 Armor Worth It in Season 2?

Heavy armor got weaker and more expensive in WARDOGS on 15 October 2026. Update 0.2.0, the Season 2 patch, cut the damage reduction on Level 3 and Level 4 armor and helmets, raised the price of every top-tier piece, moved the Level 3 unlock later on the WARDOG track, and gave the Level 4 helmet real drawbacks. Two days later BULKHEAD admitted on X that players were reaching "end game gear like Tier 4 armour" within days of the wipe.

So is Level 4 armor still worth it? This guide covers what each armor tier does in Season 2, what it costs every life, where it unlocks, how ammo type changes the picture, and when the heavy set actually pays for itself.

Quick answer: In WARDOGS Season 2, Level 3 armor and helmets reduce damage by 50% (down from 55%) and Level 4 by 60% (down from 65%). Per life, Level 3 armor costs $2,500 and the Level 3 helmet $2,000; Level 4 armor costs $5,000 and the Level 4 helmet $4,500, so a full Level 4 set is $9,500 every time you deploy. Level 3 helmet and armor now unlock at WARDOG level 70 (was 60). The Level 4 helmet muffles audio and proximity chat, narrows your view and fogs when you sprint. Buy Level 4 armor for fights you expect to survive; for most deaths, Level 3 or lighter is the better use of Cash.

Updated 21 October 2026. Applies to WARDOGS Season 2, Update 0.2.0 (patch notes posted on Steam 14 October 2026, season live 15 October 2026). WARDOGS is BULKHEAD's 100-player, three-team Control Zone shooter on PC. It is not a battle royale or extraction shooter. Every price, level and percentage below comes from the official Season 02 Patch Notes unless it is marked as a player report. Prices are base vendor prices; Season 2 also has conditional vendor discounts.

What changed for armor in WARDOGS Season 2?

The Season 02 Patch Notes list the armor changes under Combat Balance, verbatim:

  • Level 3 Armor & Helmets: "Damage reduction lowered 55% → 50%."
  • Level 4 Armor & Helmets: "Damage reduction lowered 65% → 60%."
  • "Level 4 Helmet now has muffled audio, muffled proximity chat, a restricted field of view, and will fog over when you're sprinting."
  • "Level 3 and Level 4 helmets also now have increased suppression resistance."

The same patch rebuilt suppression and put numbers on what helmets do against it: "Level 3 helmets reduce suppression by 68%" and "Level 4 helmets reduce suppression by 80%."

Two other changes matter for anyone wearing armor:

  • 12 gauge slugs now deal damage against armor that "scales with armor tier instead of one flat reduction."
  • The compound bow got the same tier-scaled armor damage, and BULKHEAD says it is "slightly more effective vs lower tier armor than season 1."

And then there's the price. Every Level 3 and Level 4 piece costs more per life than it did in Season 1.

How much does each armor tier cost per life?

Armor in WARDOGS is an unlock on a progression track plus a Cash purchase at the vendor every life you wear it. Die in it and you buy it again next deployment. The table below is that per-life vendor price.

ItemSeason 1 priceSeason 2 priceChange
Level 3 Armor$2,000$2,500+25%
Level 3 Helmet$1,500$2,000+33%
Level 4 Armor$4,000$5,000+25%
Level 4 Helmet$3,000$4,500+50%
Full Level 3 set$3,500$4,500+29%
Full Level 4 set$7,000$9,500+36%

Source: Season 02 Patch Notes, Vendor Price Changes. Level 1 and Level 2 prices were not part of the Season 2 changes and are not published in the notes.

To put $9,500 in context, the same patch notes set the new kill bonus for an assault-archetype weapon at $2,000 and a hostile drill tower capture at $1,500. A full Level 4 set costs more than four assault-weapon kill bonuses, every single life. If you die in it before you earn that back, the armor cost more than it earned you.

What level do you unlock Level 3 and Level 4 armor?

Level 3 helmet and armor unlock at WARDOG level 70 in Season 2. The patch notes list it under WARDOG Track Changes: "Level 3 Helmet & Armor LVL 60 → LVL 70." The WARDOG track is the account-wide progression track that the Season 1 patch notes called Career.

Getting an item into your loadout in WARDOGS can involve three separate costs:

  • Reach the level on the right track.
  • Pay any one-time Cash unlock fee. The patch notes list these separately for many items (the M4 is $150,000 to unlock and the FAL $250,000, for example). No unlock fee is published for Level 3 or Level 4 armor, so check the price in-game before you plan around it.
  • Pay the vendor price each life you want to wear it (the table above).

The Level 4 unlock level is not in the Season 2 patch notes. BULKHEAD only listed items that moved, and Level 4 armor didn't. We won't print a number we can't source. Check your WARDOG track in-game before you plan around it.

What we can say: the Season 2 role tracks level faster than Season 1. BULKHEAD, verbatim: "Reaching level 20 now takes less than half the playtime it did in Season 1." BULKHEAD later said of that change, "We sped up progression on deliberately … but it was the wrong call," and it's now considering an early wipe (more on that below).

How does armor interact with AP ammo in WARDOGS?

This is the question r/WarDogs is arguing about this week, and the honest answer is that BULKHEAD hasn't published how armor-piercing rounds interact with armor tiers. The patch notes give damage reduction percentages for Level 3 and Level 4, not penetration values.

What we have is a player test. On 21 October 2026 one r/WarDogs player posted chest-shot results with AP ammo against each armor tier. Their numbers are below, labelled for what they are: one player's test, not official data.

AP round (weapon used)Armor 1Armor 2Armor 3Armor 4
9x19 AP (AMP-9)7799
.45 AP (Super-45)6678
5.45x39 AP (AK-74)7788
5.56x45 AP (Galil)6778
7.62x39 AP (TCX-SPR)6667
7.62x54 AP (PKM)5566
.308 Win AP (FAL)5556
.50 BMG (AMR 50)1122

Shots to kill, centre-mass chest only. Player report from r/WarDogs, 21 October 2026, not verified by BULKHEAD.

The tester's conclusion, in their own words: "Upgrading from Tier 1 (3 kg) to Tier 4 (18 kg) usually buys you ONE single extra bullet of protection to the chest." They also report that Level 4 armor puts you in a heavy weight class with slower movement, more aim sway and slower aiming down sights. Those weights and movement penalties are a player report too; the patch notes don't list them.

There's a real gap in that test, and the comment thread spotted it straight away. One reply: "Your testing and comparison isn't taking into account standard ammunition. Higher tier armor gives significant damage reduction to standard fmj." Another player posted their own ranking, claiming standard FMJ beats AP against Tier 1 and Tier 2 armor, and AP beats FMJ against Tier 3 and Tier 4. We haven't verified a comparable public test yet.

Here's how to read it:

  • Against AP ammo, the gap between tiers looks small. That's the point of AP ammo.
  • Against standard rounds, the published 50% and 60% reductions should do much more work. And most AP rounds sit deep on the WARDOG track (see the next section).
  • Headshots are the helmet's job, not the chest plate's, which is where the helmet tier and its drawbacks come in.

Which ammo types beat armor, and when do they unlock?

Ammo type is a WARDOG-track unlock, and Season 2 moved several of them. From the WARDOG Track Changes, verbatim levels:

AmmoSeason 1 levelSeason 2 level
5.45x39mm Flesh Damage (HP)166
9x19mm Flesh Damage (HP)610
5.56mm Flesh Damage (HP)1013
.308 Win Flesh Damage (HP)6563
7.62x39mm Armor Piercing (AP)6360
5.56mm Armor Piercing (AP)8384
5.45x39mm Armor Piercing (AP)9390

So hollow-point rounds come early and AP rounds come late, between WARDOG levels 60 and 90. Level 3 armor (WARDOG 70) sits above 7.62x39mm AP (60) but below 5.56mm AP (84) and 5.45x39mm AP (90), so many players can buy Level 3 armor before they can buy AP for an AK-74 or a 5.56 rifle.

The patch also cut base damage on the big calibres, and BULKHEAD notes it hits "every weapon that uses these rounds, including infantry & vehicle weapons": .308 Winchester -25%, 7.62x54mmR -20%, 7.62x39mm -19% and .50 Cal -16%. Snipers got higher hit-location damage to compensate.

Is the Level 4 helmet worth it?

The Level 4 helmet is now the most compromised piece of armor in the game. For $4,500 a life you get 60% damage reduction and 80% suppression reduction, and you also get, verbatim, "muffled audio, muffled proximity chat, a restricted field of view" and a visor that "will fog over when you're sprinting."

In a game where proximity voice carries to all three teams and footsteps tell you where a fight is, muffled audio is a real cost. Season 2's rain makes it worse: BULKHEAD's Season 02 Preview says thunder "can temporarily mask footsteps," so you're already hearing less in a storm.

Wear the Level 4 helmet when you're holding a position (an FOB, a building inside the Control Zone, a defensive line) where you expect to take fire and don't need to hear people coming.

Skip it when you're moving, hunting, flanking or playing Medic, where hearing and field of view matter more than one extra hit.

The Level 3 helmet keeps most of the protection (50% damage reduction, 68% suppression reduction) for $2,000 with none of the listed drawbacks. For most players it's the better helmet.

Helmet tier also matters against the Scout Rifle. From the patch notes: "Scout Rifle headshots now one-shot targets with no helmet" and "A Level 1 helmet takes two headshots to kill." Running bareheaded against a Scout Rifle is a bad idea in Season 2.

When is heavy armor worth the Cash in WARDOGS?

Cash persists between matches and you pay for armor every life, so armor is a spending decision before it's a combat one. Here's a simple way to decide:

SituationOur pickWhy
Holding an FOB or a building in the Control ZoneLevel 4 armor + Level 3 helmet ($7,000)You're taking fire for a long time, and you keep your hearing
Pushing into the Hot Zone with a squadLevel 3 set ($4,500)Less than half the price of Level 4, most of the protection
Logistics runs, driving, flyingLight armor or noneYour vehicle is the protection, and armor costs add up fast
Medic reviving under fireLevel 3 armor, Level 3 helmetYou need to hear and see casualties
Low on Cash, or after a run of deathsCheapest tier you're comfortable inRebuild your balance first
Enemy squads clearly running APLighter armor, more mobilityPer the player test above, AP narrows the tier gap

The rule underneath all of this: only buy armor you expect to earn back. If you're dying in the first two minutes of a deployment, a $9,500 set is the quickest way to lose your Cash balance. Our WARDOGS Cash price list and money-making guide cover the earning side.

Will armor and levels reset in Season 3?

Yes, if Season 3 follows the reset BULKHEAD described for every season: your Cash and XP progression reset, Cash is auto-converted into Gold Bars, and Gold Bars and cosmetics stay on your account. That means your WARDOG level 70 unlock for Level 3 armor is a Season 2 asset, not a permanent one.

The timing has changed too. On 17 October 2026 the official @WARDOGS account posted, verbatim: "Some players are reaching end game gear like Tier 4 armour and MBTs within days, so the wipe never really landed." BULKHEAD said it is "looking at significantly bringing forward Season 3 and some of its content, so you get a proper fresh start." No Season 3 date has been published as of 21 October 2026; the details are promised in an upcoming dev vlog. Our Season 3 release date guide tracks it, and everything we know about Season 2 covers the rest of the patch.

PCGamesN also reports that BULKHEAD's upcoming "Limited Mode" servers will cap level-4 armour, along with power weapons, tanks and artillery.

Practical takeaway: an early wipe makes Cash you're holding for no reason less valuable. If you have a healthy balance, it's reasonable to spend more of it on armor in fights you can win.

How do you get to WARDOG level 70 faster?

Level 3 armor sits at WARDOG 70 and most AP ammo sits between 60 and 90, so the WARDOG track is the one that decides your armor and ammo options. Our guide to levelling fast in Season 2 covers the full method. The short version:

  • Play the objective. Zone presence, drill tower captures ($1,500 and 300 XP each in Season 2), and FOB hacks ($2,500 and 250 XP, plus $1,000 and 250 XP for each teammate in the radius) pay out much more reliably than chasing kills.
  • Run logistics in streaks. Season 2 added delivery-streak bonuses for crates, pallets, players and return trips, up to 10 in a row (25 for players).
  • Don't overspend on armor while levelling. Every life you lose in a $9,500 set slows the Cash side of your progress down.

Short on time to reach WARDOG level 70? Our team levels your WARDOG account track by hand to the gate you name, whether that's Level 3 armor at 70 or AP ammo further up. You keep your progress for the rest of Season 2.

FAQ

What are the armor tiers in WARDOGS? Armor and helmets in WARDOGS run from Level 1 to Level 4; the patch notes name Levels 1, 3 and 4, and players test all four. In Season 2 the Season 02 Patch Notes give Level 3 armor and helmets 50% damage reduction and Level 4 60%. BULKHEAD hasn't published damage reduction values for Level 1 and Level 2.

How much does Level 4 armor cost in WARDOGS? In Season 2, Level 4 armor costs $5,000 and the Level 4 helmet $4,500 at the vendor, every life. A full Level 4 set is $9,500 per deployment, up from $7,000 in Season 1.

What level is Level 3 armor in WARDOGS? Level 3 helmet and armor unlock at WARDOG level 70 in Season 2, up from level 60 in Season 1. You then pay the vendor price ($2,500 armor, $2,000 helmet) each life you wear them; check in-game for any one-time unlock fee, which the patch notes don't list for armor.

Is Level 4 armor worth it in WARDOGS? Level 4 armor is worth it when you're holding a position and expect to survive long enough to earn back $9,500. For most other roles, the Level 3 set gives most of the protection for less than half the price. The Level 4 helmet now muffles audio and fogs while sprinting, so we'd pair Level 4 armor with a Level 3 helmet.

Does AP ammo ignore armor in WARDOGS? BULKHEAD hasn't published how AP rounds interact with armor. One r/WarDogs player test found that against AP ammo, Level 4 armor usually survives only one more chest shot than Level 1. One commenter says high-tier armor blocks standard FMJ rounds much better, but we haven't verified a comparable public test yet.

Does armor reset when the WARDOGS season ends? Your Cash and XP progression reset at the end of a season, so your WARDOG level unlocks for armor go with them. BULKHEAD is considering bringing Season 3 forward, but no date has been published as of 21 October 2026.
