WARDOGS IR Goggles & CWIS Hotfix: What the October 2 Balance Changes Mean

Quick answer: On 2 October 2026, BULKHEAD pushed a live balance hotfix to WARDOGS (Steam Early Access, appid 1867240). Two things changed: the IR Rangefinders (thermal goggles/binoculars) were disabled in the in-match vendor until Season 02, because BULKHEAD agreed with players that they were too powerful; and the CWIS now destroys the Havoc in about 6 seconds instead of 12, walking back an over-correction from the previous patch. No client download and no server downtime were required — the changes applied as regional servers restarted. This came hours after a separate one-hour Security & Stability Hotfix (also 2 October). Season 2's wipe lands on 15 October 2026, so these are the live balance rules for roughly your last two weeks of Season 1.

WARDOGS is being balanced almost in real time right now. In the week before this hotfix, BULKHEAD shipped Update 0.1.2 (30 September) with crash fixes and a zero-tolerance exploit stance, and BULKHEAD CEO Joe Brammer has said publicly that getting the balance right is an ongoing, data-driven process — in remarks reported by IGN and others, he said the team "won't even be able to get everything right by season two." That is the context for the 2 October changes: small, fast, reactive tweaks to the two things the community was loudest about. Here is exactly what changed, why it changed, and what it means for how you play — and spend your Cash — before the Season 2 reset.

What changed in the October 2 hotfix?

BULKHEAD's announcement, "IR Goggles & CWIS Balance Hotfix" (2 October 2026, 15:39 UTC, Steam Community), is short and specific. Verbatim: "We have just made 2 key balance changes. Within the next 12 hours when servers restart across regions, the IR Rangefinders will be disabled in the vendor until Season 02, where they will require batteries to use... The CWIS also now destroys the havoc in around 6 seconds as opposed to 12... No new client download or server downtime is required."

Two changes, both live as servers cycled:

  • IR Rangefinders (thermal goggles/binoculars) — removed from the vendor until Season 02. You can no longer buy them for the rest of Season 1. When they return in Season 02, they will require batteries to use, the same consumable-cost model the game already uses for the defibrillator.
  • CWIS vs Havoc — time-to-kill cut from ~12 seconds to ~6 seconds. The CWIS (close-in weapon system) now shreds the Havoc roughly twice as fast. BULKHEAD called the previous 12-second value an over-correction and reverted it.

Note what is not in this hotfix: no XP-curve changes, no new unlock levels, no vendor-price changes to anything other than removing the IR Rangefinder from sale. The Season 1 progression and economy tables are unchanged — if you are mid-grind, your level gates and vendor Cash prices are exactly where they were.

Why were the IR Rangefinders pulled?

Because BULKHEAD agreed with the community that they were too strong. Verbatim: "In this instance, we agree with player sentiment and they cross the line into being too overpowered." On r/WarDogs this week, thermal optics were the single most-discussed topic — threads debating a pro player's take on thermal binoculars and whether spotting is too powerful were at the top of the board. Thermal vision that highlights enemies through smoke, foliage and low light in a 100-player, three-team fight is a huge information advantage, and in a game BULKHEAD built around teamplay actions earning Cash — spotting, reviving, zone control — an optic that trivialises spotting distorts the whole loop.

The "batteries in Season 02" line matters: BULKHEAD isn't deleting the item, it's re-costing it. Instead of a one-time vendor purchase that then works all match, thermals will burn a consumable, so using them becomes a resource decision rather than a permanent toggle. That is the same design language as the defibrillator (which runs on batteries — one battery is five revives).

Why was the CWIS buffed back up?

The previous patch had slowed the CWIS's kill time on the Havoc to ~12 seconds, and BULKHEAD decided that swung the dial too far the other way. Reverting it to ~6 seconds restores the CWIS as a credible answer to the Havoc. Verbatim: "We acknowledge we overcorrected this in the previous patch and have hotfixed the issue this morning."

One naming note, because it matters for accuracy: "Havoc" is now a confirmed first-party vehicle name. It appeared in the Update 0.1.2 patch notes (a bug fix about damage taken from 20mm/30mm cannon fire) and again here. For months "Havoc" only showed up on third-party content farms and was treated as unverified — it is now official. Most of the other exotic vehicle names those sites list (UH-1Y, L2A6, Flakpanzer Gepard and so on) still do not appear in any BULKHEAD source, so treat those with suspicion.

Was there a second hotfix on October 2?

Yes. Earlier the same day, BULKHEAD posted "WARDOGS — Security & Stability Hotfix" (2 October 2026, 00:13 UTC): "A hotfix is planned for tomorrow, Friday 2nd, at 08:00 UTC, to address minor security and stability issues affecting some players. Expected downtime is one hour."

So 2 October saw two separate interventions: a scheduled 08:00 UTC maintenance window (~1 hour of downtime) for security and stability, and then the 15:39 UTC balance hotfix that needed no downtime at all. If you got kicked to the login queue that Friday morning, the maintenance window is why — it was planned, not an outage.

Is WARDOGS still being patched this fast?

Yes, and that is the real story. In the span of about three weeks the patch cadence has been relentless:

  • Season 1 Changelog — 9 September 2026 (launch build; no numeric version)
  • Launch Stability Hotfix #1 — 10 September 2026 (server/queue fixes)
  • Patch 0.11 — 12 September 2026 (server browser split, cash-exploit fixes, time-boxed community-server bonus)
  • Update 0.1.2 — 30 September 2026 (WD-L020/KB5124010 crash fix, more exploit fixes, zero-tolerance ban stance, new DEPLOY UX)
  • Security & Stability Hotfix — 2 October 2026
  • IR Goggles & CWIS Balance Hotfix — 2 October 2026

That is six interventions in roughly 23 days. BULKHEAD does now number its minor patches (Patch 0.11, Update 0.1.2), but these two 2 October items were titled hotfixes with no numeric build string, so anchor them by date, not a version number. If you see "WARDOGS 1.0.4 patch notes" anywhere, it is fabricated — "1.0" refers to the future full release, and WARDOGS is in Early Access.

What does this mean before the Season 2 wipe?

Two practical takeaways, with the wipe clock ticking.

1. Don't plan a Season 1 loadout around thermals. They are gone from the vendor until Season 02. If you were leaning on IR Rangefinders for spotting, you have about two weeks to adapt to standard optics and binoculars. When they return in Season 02 they'll cost batteries, so build the habit now of treating thermal vision as a limited resource, not a default.

2. The Havoc is more contestable again. With the CWIS back to a ~6-second kill on it, air superiority from a Havoc is less of a free win. If your squad's plan leaned on it, expect it to be shot down faster.

And the bigger clock: Season 2 starts 15 October 2026, and at season end your Cash and XP reset — your banked Cash auto-converts to Gold Bars (which, along with cosmetics, persist permanently across seasons), while your levels go back to zero. That means your Season 1 progression is a depreciating, season-scoped asset. The smart play for your remaining Season 1 time is to spend down Cash on things you want to test, push the Career and class gates you actually care about, then convert the rest to Gold Bars before the reset. BULKHEAD has not published the Cash→Gold exchange ratio, so check it in-game rather than trusting any number you read online.

A reminder on how progression actually works, because the hotfix doesn't change it: WARDOGS uses a two-gate system. An item needs a level on the right track to become available and enough Cash to buy it at the vendor each life. XP unlocks access; Cash pays, every deployment. With the Season 1 XP curve deliberately slowed (leveling is +100.9% slower at level 15 and +124.2% slower at level 20 versus the beta), both gates are a real time sink — which is exactly why plenty of players look for a faster route before a wipe erases the levels anyway.

Short on time before the 15 October wipe? These are piloted boosts (a specialist signs into your account) except Rent a Pro, which is self-play. WARDOGS is skill-gated and account-bound, so pick what fits — and be aware the game runs a kernel-level anti-cheat and the everplay EULA restricts paid progression, so there is no "no-risk" claim anyone can honestly make.

  • WARDOGS Career Leveling — push your WARDOG career level past the slowed Season 1 curve before the reset; hand-played, no bots.
  • WARDOGS Cash — hand-farmed Cash so you can kit out and convert to Gold Bars before Season 2; you re-buy your loadout every deployment.
  • WARDOGS Class Leveling — Medic, Support, Driver, Pilot or Recon levelled to the exact gate you want.
  • WARDOGS Rent a Pro — squad up with a pro and play it yourself; you keep the controller.
  • All WARDOGS services — the full currency, leveling and carry lineup.

FAQ

What did the WARDOGS October 2 hotfix change? Two balance changes. The IR Rangefinders (thermal goggles/binoculars) were removed from the in-match vendor until Season 02, when they will return but require batteries to use; and the CWIS now destroys the Havoc in about 6 seconds instead of 12, reverting an over-correction from the previous patch. BULKHEAD stated no client download and no server downtime were needed — the changes applied as regional servers restarted within 12 hours of the announcement.

Why were the IR Rangefinders disabled in WARDOGS? BULKHEAD said it agreed with player sentiment that they were too powerful — verbatim, that they "cross the line into being too overpowered." Thermal spotting is a large information edge in a 100-player, three-team fight, and the studio opted to pull the item for the rest of Season 1 and re-introduce it in Season 02 on a battery (consumable) cost instead of a one-time purchase.

Do I need to download a patch for the October 2 balance hotfix? No. BULKHEAD's announcement says "no new client download or server downtime is required." The changes went live automatically as servers restarted across regions. (A separate Security & Stability Hotfix earlier the same day, at 08:00 UTC, did have about one hour of planned downtime.)

Is "Havoc" a real WARDOGS vehicle? Yes, it is now a confirmed first-party name. "Havoc" appears in BULKHEAD's own Update 0.1.2 patch notes and again in this 2 October hotfix. Many other exotic vehicle names that circulate on third-party sites still do not appear in any official WARDOGS source, so verify before trusting them.

Will the IR goggles come back in Season 2? Yes. BULKHEAD stated the IR Rangefinders will be disabled "until Season 02, where they will require batteries to use." So they return at the start of Season 2 (15 October 2026) on a consumable-cost model rather than as a one-time vendor purchase.

Does this hotfix change WARDOGS leveling or Cash prices? No. The October 2 hotfix only touched the IR Rangefinder availability and the CWIS-vs-Havoc time-to-kill. The Season 1 XP curve, unlock levels and vendor Cash prices are unchanged. Remember that all Season 1 Cash and XP reset at the 15 October 2026 wipe (Cash auto-converts to persistent Gold Bars).
