Andreas "Cr1t-" Nielsen has announced an indefinite break from competitive Dota 2 and will not play the coming season. The Danish support posted the statement on 8 September 2026. He did not announce a retirement — a distinction most of the coverage has already lost.

The statement ran to two parts, both published. The second was a thank-you to the teammates and fans of his career, ending on a line about seeing them on stream soon. Neither part uses the word retirement.
It is the first time Cr1t- has set out his plans directly since Team Falcons' exit from Dota 2. An indefinite break with no stated return date is not the same thing as retiring.
What he actually said, and what he did not
Cr1t- has been reported as retired more than once in the past three weeks, on the strength of comments considerably softer than the headlines they produced.
After Falcons were eliminated from The International 2026, he said the event was probably his last TI. That is a statement about one tournament, not about a career, and it was reported variously as a hint at retirement, as considering retirement, and in some trackers as a retirement announcement outright. As of 9 September his Liquipedia profile still lists his status as active.
The 8 September statement is more specific than any of that, but still narrower than a retirement. Three things are now confirmed by the player himself: he will not play the 2026-2027 season, the break has no stated end date, and he intends to stream. Whether he competes again after this season, he has not said.
Who Cr1t- is
Nielsen, 30, is one of the longest-serving Western players of the past decade. He played position 4 on the Team Falcons roster that formed on 11 November 2023 and stayed unchanged for close to three years, stand-ins aside, winning The International 2025 together.
That run ended badly. Falcons went into The International 2026 as the defending champions and were knocked out by Team Liquid in the first round of the lower bracket on 21 August, finishing 7th-8th. The organisation announced its departure from competitive Dota 2 on 6 September and released all five players.
What this changes for the shuffle
Falcons put five decorated players onto the market at once. Cr1t-'s post removes one of them from it.
Oliver "skiter" Lepko, Stanislav "Malr1ne" Potorak, Ammar "ATF" Al-Assaf and Jingjun "Sneyking" Wu remain free agents and among the most attractive pieces available this off-season. Any team holding a slot open to rebuild around the full Falcons core now knows that core cannot be reassembled for the coming season.
Falcons' support structure came apart before the playing roster did: coach Kurtis "Aui_2000" Ling said on 23 August that he did not plan to continue his Dota 2 career, and manager Mohammad "AfrOmoush" Abu Al Eis announced he was looking for new opportunities on 4 September. Cr1t- stepping back completes the picture — the roster has not simply changed organisations, it has come apart.
The timing is tight. The next tier-one event, PGL Wallachia Season 9, starts on 17 September in Bucharest, and this shuffle has been slow enough that 1win Essence III was postponed and Wallachia itself was reported short of teams. Elsewhere the churn has been heavy: Xtreme Gaming released four of five players at the start of the month, keeping only Ame.
Until he says otherwise, the accurate description of his status is the one he used himself: an indefinite break.
