Valve has released the Trove of Terror, an eldritch Dota 2 treasure built around two Arcanas, and it is live now. The announcement post, "Inside the Trove of Terror," hit Dota 2's Steam news feed at 00:22 UTC on 7 October 2026 (6 October Pacific), and the chest is already in the in-game store. It brings an all-new Tidehunter Arcana called Maw of the Megalodon, a rerun of Drow Ranger's Dread Retribution Arcana, fifteen new Immortal sets, and bonus Tormentor and Roshan rewards unlocked by opening the chest repeatedly.
One thing it is not: a gameplay patch. The patch-notes feed still ends at 7.41f from 15 September 2026, and Valve shipped no gameplay notes with the treasure — if you came looking for 7.42, this is not it. We track that in our next Dota 2 patch explainer; the 7.41f item changes remain the live balance rules, and the BLAST SLAM VIII playoffs are the next live Dota 2 event.
What is in the Trove of Terror
Valve describes the haul as "a mind-bending number of Immortal item sets, one new and one returning Arcana, and brand-new Tormentor and Roshan appearances," then settles on a figure: "our collection of new item sets numbered fifteen." Despite the timing, this is not Dota 2's Halloween event — Valve's post never says Halloween, and Diretide is not part of it.
All fifteen are Immortal sets, spread across three disclosed drop tiers. Twelve sit in the standard tier: Stoneback Sovereign, Patchwork Protector, Creeping Calabash, Rictus Ripper, Clairvoyant Configuration, Slobbering Strongbox, Shattered Sanity, Arachnid Anathema, Daemon Hunter, Direstone Desecration, Greasepaint Gutbuster and Silken Sibyl. Two are Rare — Curse of the Wyrmbender for Shadow Shaman, Mesmer-Eye for Nyx Assassin — and one is Very Rare, Legion Commander's Hell's Legion. The two Arcana rewards sit outside that fifteen, in their own Ultra Rare tier. GosuGamers and esports.gg both report that the Anti-Mage set, Daemon Hunter, ships with a free Persona; Valve did not mention it.
The treasure itself is Mythical rarity, sold only through the in-game store, and flagged neither tradable nor marketable. Recycling six sets from it returns one additional treasure.
Maw of the Megalodon: the new Tidehunter Arcana
The headline item is Tidehunter's first Arcana. Valve says Maw of the Megalodon ships with "a new model, a host of custom animations, effects, taunts, voice lines, and dragging a familiar-looking corpse that serves as one part security blanket and one part snack." The announcement teases three looks rather than one, in character: "Should one master this Arcana's secrets, one would surely unlock all three of its shark-toothed designs."
Valve did not name the styles; GosuGamers reports them as Maw of the Megalodon, The Hammer of Maelrawn and Unfathomable Hunger, unconfirmed by Valve. GosuGamers and esports.gg both identify the dragged corpse as Kunkka's skeletal remains. The Arcana comes only from the Trove of Terror — not sold directly, not dropped elsewhere.
Drow Ranger's Dread Retribution returns
The second Arcana is a rerun. Valve called it "a Drow Ranger Arcana long thought lost to the flow of time," noting she "can look as she once did or assume a grave-stalking new form."
That Arcana is Dread Retribution, first released on 14 December 2021 as the level-333 reward in the Aghanim's Labyrinth Battle Pass, and not generally available since. Sepulchral Stalker is not its name — that is the new Ultra Rare Drow Ranger set in this treasure, which ships as a set-plus-Arcana bundle. Coverage has blurred this: esports.gg's prose calls the returning Arcana "Sepulchral Stalker," and Hotspawn placed it in the TI11 Battle Pass rather than Aghanim's Labyrinth.
Drop rates, and the 50-open guarantee
The disclosed drop rates start brutally. On the first open, the Ultra Rare tier — the two Arcana rewards — sits at 1 in 100,000, or 0.001%. The odds climb with every treasure opened and reset once you receive an Ultra Rare item: roughly 1 in 1,486 by the sixth open, 1 in 105 by the twentieth, and 1 in 17 by the forty-ninth.
Bad-luck protection lands on the fiftieth open, where the chance reaches 1 in 1 — but read it carefully: it guarantees an Ultra Rare item, and there are two in that tier. Fifty opens does not specifically promise the Tidehunter Arcana over the Drow Ranger set.
Two rewards run off a flat open count instead of a rolling probability: twelve opens grant the Tormentor appearance, Obscene Eye Ball; forty grant the Roshan appearance R'shan the Eternal plus a matching courier, Baby R'shan the Eternal.
Early complaints on Valve's bug tracker
Valve's public Dota 2 bug tracker took more than twenty Trove of Terror reports between 01:00 and 07:00 UTC on 7 October. Two go straight to the treasure's economics: one disputes the non-tradable, non-marketable tags on the Maw of the Megalodon bundle, arguing an Ultra Rare Arcana drop should be both; another reports the same tags on the Drow Ranger bundle. Valve had not commented on either as of 07:00 UTC.
FAQ
How much does the Trove of Terror cost? Valve's announcement lists no price, and the in-game store is the only Valve surface that shows one. Outlets put it at roughly $5 per chest — esports.gg says about $4.70 — unconfirmed against any Valve page. And because the treasure is non-marketable, there is no Steam Community Market listing to check it against.
How many treasures do I need to open to guarantee an Arcana? Fifty, counted from your last Ultra Rare drop rather than as a lifetime total — the counter resets each time the tier pays out.
I already own Dread Retribution — do I get anything extra? Unclear. One open bug report from a 2021 owner says opening Sepulchral Stalker granted the set but no second copy of the Arcana bundle. Valve has not commented on the report and has not said what prior owners receive in place of the Arcana.
