AION 2 is free to play, but its most useful economy systems sit behind an optional Membership that costs roughly $15 a month. That Membership is what unlocks the player Market (the auction house) and the Kina ↔ Quna Exchange, plus a set of quality-of-life and efficiency perks. If you only want to log in, level, and run dungeons, you never have to pay. If you want to trade freely with other players, you effectively do. This guide breaks down exactly what the Membership gates, what it does not, and whether it is worth buying on day one — verified against NC's official pre-launch information as of September 11, 2026, ahead of the September 30 head start and the October 5 global launch.
Quick answer: AION 2's ~$15/month Membership unlocks the Market and the Kina ↔ Quna Exchange, adds a member-only shop tier, and grants efficiency perks (remote storage/vendor access and reportedly extra dungeon loot pulls, more Odyle energy, and more Abyss time in the Korean build). It is not required to play, level, or run content. You cannot buy a Membership with in-game Kina — it is real money only — and NC has published no exact perk numbers for the global build. Verdict: worth it if you plan to use the auction house or play seriously long-term; skip it if you are a casual solo player or just trying the game.
This is the pre-launch information NC has confirmed. Nobody outside Korea and Taiwan has played the global retail build yet, so any figure attributed to "the Korean version" below is exactly that — reported from that older build, not confirmed for the West. We will retest and update after October 5.
What is the AION 2 Membership?
AION 2 launches globally on October 5, 2026 as a free-to-play game — there is no box price and no subscription is required to enter, level, or run content. NC confirmed the free-to-play model on the game's Steam page (AppID 3393110) and in its official July 8, 2026 "Business Model — Our Approach" notice posted to the AION 2 notice board.
The Membership is an optional monthly subscription priced at roughly $15/month. In NC's own framing, the Membership "unlocks the Market and the Kina ↔ Quna Exchange, plus additional gameplay benefits for members." MMORPG.com summarised the same notice bluntly: the announcement promises the game is "free to play … to every player with no purchase required," but "a large portion of what defines an MMORPG economy sits behind a monthly Membership."
So the mental model to hold is this: the game is free; the player economy is a subscription. That distinction is the whole reason "is the AION 2 subscription worth it" is one of the most-asked questions in the community right now.
What the Membership actually unlocks
Here is the confirmed and reported feature split, kept honest about which is which.
Confirmed by NC for the global launch
- The Market (auction house). The centralised player-to-player marketplace where you list and buy items. Membership-gated.
- The Kina ↔ Quna Exchange. A first-party currency conversion between the earned currency (Kina) and the premium, real-money currency (Quna). This is a WoW-token-style system built by NC. Membership-gated.
- A member-only shop tier and "additional gameplay benefits." NC's notice references extra member benefits without fully itemising every one for the West.
NC's official wording on the Founder's Pack "Quai Membership" (a 30-day Membership grant included with the packs) also lists the concrete perks as "remote storage, market interaction, and increased reward selection count for dungeons" — which lines up with what members describe below.
Reported in the Korean/Taiwanese build (not confirmed numbers for global)
Players who have spent time on the live Taiwan build describe the Membership's day-to-day perks like this. Treat these as reported behaviour from that build — NC has not published exact global figures:
- Remote storage and remote vendor/shop access — reach your warehouse and merchants without travelling back to town.
- More Odyle energy regeneration — energy is the resource that gates end-of-dungeon loot; members regenerate more of it.
- Loot dungeons twice (for roughly twice the energy cost), i.e. more reward pulls per run.
- More Shugo loot and runs.
- Roughly double Abyss time for the faction-war endgame.
- A member battle pass / member-only shop.
One Taiwan player put the storage perk in plain terms: "You get a shitton of loot … without sub I would port back to storage manager every five minutes." Another countered that upgrading your inventory largely solves that — "I'm going to storage like once per day" — which is a fair reminder that several member perks are convenience, not power.
What the Membership does NOT do
Just as important is what stays free. Per NC's stance and community testing of the Korean build:
- You can still play, level, and run content without paying. The core game — leveling, questing (the MSQ), dungeons, world content — is not paywalled.
- You still earn Kina. Free players accumulate Kina naturally from leveling, dungeons, and quests. What you cannot do is trade it freely on the Market.
- The shop is cosmetics and consumables, not power. NC states its cash shop items are "purely aesthetic" (outfits, wings, pets, weapon skins) or consumables also obtainable in game, and that purchases "do not affect gear progression or long-term power." That is NC's claim, not an independent verdict — see the pay-to-win section below.
The honest F2P read from experienced players is that free play is genuinely playable: "Subs obviously progress a bit faster, but a lot of the content that directly affects power is the same for F2P and subs," as one Taiwan F2P player put it. The pinch is the economy, not the content.
The catch free players keep hitting: you cannot buy Membership with Kina
This is the question that comes up more than any other, so here is the direct answer.
Can you buy a Membership using in-game Kina? Based on the confirmed system, no. The Membership is a real-money subscription. The Kina ↔ Quna Exchange lets you convert between the two in-game currencies, but the Exchange itself is one of the systems the Membership unlocks — so you cannot use it to bootstrap your way into a Membership without first being a member. There is no in-game token you farm and redeem for subscription time the way you can in some other MMOs.
And if you subscribe once, then let it lapse? Reported answer from the community, based on the Korean build's rules: your Market access goes away when the Membership expires. One player summarised the pair of questions exactly: "As a F2P player, will I be able to buy a subscription token purely through in-game farming? No. If I purchase a subscription once at the beginning, will I still retain access to the market after it expires? No." NC has not published the global lapse rules in English, so we will confirm this after launch — but plan around it, don't plan against it.
Is AION 2 pay-to-win?
Short version: NC says no; the structure gives critics an argument. Do not accept either side as settled fact before launch.
NC's position is that the shop is cosmetics and consumables only, that cosmetics are purely aesthetic, and that purchases do not affect gear progression or long-term power. That is a direct claim from NC's monetization communications.
The counter-argument, raised by MMORPG.com, is structural: crafted gear is reported to be tradeable on the Market, and Quna converts to Kina via the Exchange. If real money buys Quna, Quna becomes Kina, and Kina buys geared items on a Market that only members can use — then money can indirectly buy power even if no single shop item is a stat boost. Both of these are worth understanding before you decide; neither is a launch-day measurement, because launch day has not happened.
The community itself is split, which tells you how genuinely uncertain this is pre-launch: one thread was titled "Aion 2 isn't just P2W?" while long-time skeptics remain unconvinced. Our rule: we report NC's claim and the structural counter, and we test it ourselves once the retail servers are live.
So — is the Membership worth it?
Here is a straight decision guide rather than a non-answer.
- Buy it if: you intend to use the auction house regularly, you want the trading economy at all, you are playing AION 2 as your main MMO, or you value the convenience (remote storage/vendors) and the efficiency perks over a long grind. For a serious or economy-focused player, the Market alone is close to mandatory.
- Skip it if: you are a casual or solo player, you are only trying the game to see if the combat and classes click, or you don't care about player trading. The core game is free and playable, and you can always subscribe later once you know you're staying.
- The Founder's Pack angle: all three Founder's Pack tiers ($24.99 / $49.99 / $99.99) include a 30-day Membership ("Quai Membership") plus the 5-day early access. If you were going to try the Membership and wanted the head start anyway, the Standard pack folds one into the other. See our AION 2 Founder's Pack breakdown for whether the pack itself is worth it.
The most common sensible take from the community is buy-in low: "likely not [worth a full commitment on day one], but I have $20 to spare for that Founder Pack — the playing early is what makes it worth it for me." That is a reasonable way in: get the head start, get 30 days of Membership bundled, and decide on a recurring sub after you've actually played.
How the Membership fits AION 2's economy
To understand why the Membership matters, it helps to see the currency layout:
- Kina — the earned in-game currency (often written "Kinah," which is the spelling from the original 2008 Aion; AION 2's official spelling is Kina). Used on the Market and for gear enhancement. Free players earn it but can't trade it freely.
- Quna — the premium currency, bought with real money. Buys shop items and battle-pass tracks, and converts to Kina via the Exchange.
- The Membership — the key that turns on the Market and the Exchange so those currencies can move between players.
A player Market plus a first-party currency exchange plus a materials-consuming gear enhancement system means AION 2 has a real, functioning economy — it's just one where the "trade freely" button costs $15 a month. That is unusual for a 2026 free-to-play MMO, and it is exactly why the subscription question is dominating pre-launch discussion.
When can you first test all this?
You do not have to guess for much longer:
- September 17–18, 2026 — Launch Scale Test. A free stress test open to everyone (no keys, no registration) via Steam and PURPLE. Note that purchases, the Market, the Quna Exchange, and player trading are all disabled during the test — so it will show you the combat and classes, not the economy. All progress wipes at the end. (For details, see our AION 2 Launch Scale Test guide.)
- September 30 – October 4 — Founder's Pack early access. Head-start players get in, Membership included with the pack.
- October 5 — global launch. Free to play for everyone; the Membership becomes purchasable and the full economy goes live.

FAQ
How much is the AION 2 Membership? The Membership is an optional subscription priced at approximately $15 per month, per NC's July 8, 2026 business-model notice. NC has not published every regional price point in English pre-launch, so treat the $15 figure as the widely-reported monthly rate and confirm the exact charge at checkout on launch day.
What does the AION 2 Membership unlock? Confirmed: the player Market (auction house) and the Kina ↔ Quna Exchange, plus a member shop tier and additional gameplay benefits. Reported from the Korean build: remote storage and vendor access, more Odyle energy for dungeon loot, extra dungeon loot pulls, more Abyss time, and a member battle pass. NC has not published exact global perk numbers.
Can I buy AION 2 Membership with Kina or in-game currency? No. The Membership is a real-money subscription. You cannot farm Kina and redeem it for subscription time, and the Kina ↔ Quna Exchange that lets you convert currencies is itself one of the systems the Membership unlocks.
Is AION 2 pay-to-win? NC states the cash shop is cosmetics and consumables only and that purchases do not affect gear progression or long-term power. Critics point out that crafted gear is reportedly tradeable on the Market and Quna converts to Kina, so money could buy power indirectly. Both are pre-launch positions — we'll test the retail economy after October 5 and update.
Do I need the Membership to play AION 2? No. Leveling, questing, and dungeons are free. The Membership gates the trading economy (Market and Exchange) and adds convenience and efficiency perks. You can play the whole game without it; you just can't trade freely on the Market.
Is the Membership included in the Founder's Pack? Yes. All three Founder's Pack tiers include a 30-day "Quai Membership" alongside the 5-day early access, per the official Steam Founder's Pack page (AppID 4972180). If you buy a pack, your first 30 days of Membership are covered.
What happens to my Market access if my Membership expires? Based on the Korean build's reported rules, Market access ends when the Membership lapses — subscribing once does not grant permanent access. NC has not published the global rules in English, so confirm after launch, but plan for access being tied to an active Membership.
This guide covers AION 2 (2026, by NC/NCSoft) — a different game from the original Aion (2008) and Aion Classic. It reflects information confirmed before the October 5, 2026 global launch; unconfirmed and Korean-build details are labelled as such and will be retested after launch.
