Ultimate perks are the most expensive and most permanent upgrades in The Blood of Dawnwalker. Each one costs dozens of skill points to reach, and you can't take it back on the current build. Picking the right one changes how every late-game fight plays out. This guide ranks all nine Ultimates, lists exactly what each one does and how to unlock it, and gives you the best pick for sword, vampire, witchcraft and hybrid builds. It also clears up the rule that trips up most players: how many Ultimates you can actually own.
Quick answer: There are 9 Ultimate perks, 3 in each tree. You can learn one Ultimate per tree, so a single save can hold up to three. Swordmastery and Witchcraft Ultimates need 35 skill points spent on that tree's perks (abilities don't count). Vampirism Ultimates need Corruption 15 instead. The Ultimate itself costs 4 more skill points (PowerPyx). Our best picks as of October 19, 2026:
- Best overall: Sword Sage (Swordmastery). Kills reset your active ability cooldowns, and it works day and night.
- Best for vampire builds: Renounce Death. Once per combat, a killing blow gives you 10 seconds of immortality and lifesteal instead.
- Best for claw builds: Lethal Crescendo. Each kill adds +20% claw damage, and the bonus stacks.
- Best for witchcraft builds: Aether Cascade for boss damage, Entwined Torment for groups.
How many Ultimate perks can you get in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
One per skill tree, so up to three per save. This is the most misread rule in the game. Fextralife's perks page says "you can only learn 1 of these types, and learning 1 will disable other Ultimates on your Skill Tree." A lot of players, and some early guides including an earlier version of ours, took that to mean one Ultimate in the whole game. The guides that tested it say otherwise:
- PowerPyx's trophy guide: "You can then only obtain 1 of the 3 possible Ultimate Perks for each skill tree."
- Game8: "only one Ultimate can be learned per skill tree."
- G2A's perks guide: "Each skill tree allows only one Ultimate choice, and the selection is permanent for that playthrough."
The trophy list backs this up. There are three separate trophies for Ultimates, one per tree: Master of Arms (Swordmastery), Arch Warlock (Witchcraft) and Creature of the Night (Vampirism). Picking an Ultimate locks the other two in that tree, not the other trees.
What really limits you is skill points. PowerPyx counts 160 to 170 skill points across a full clear to level 50, and says "it's not possible to earn enough Skill Points in a single playthrough to fully upgrade every single Perk and Ability." Two point-gated Ultimates cost about 78 points (2 × 39). The Vampirism one only needs Corruption 15 plus its own 4 points. All three are affordable if you plan for them. If you spread points thinly across every tree, you may never reach 35 in any of them.
How do you unlock an Ultimate perk?
The requirements differ by tree:
| Tree | Requirement to unlock an Ultimate | Cost of the Ultimate | Works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swordmastery | 35 skill points spent on Swordmastery perks | 4 skill points | Day and night |
| Witchcraft | 35 skill points spent on Witchcraft perks | 4 skill points | Day only |
| Vampirism | Corruption 15 (the maximum), no point minimum | 4 skill points | Night only |
A few details matter here:
- Abilities don't count toward the 35. PowerPyx: "points put into the Abilities do not count toward the 35, only those put into Perks." If you've been leveling Artery Strike or Burning Blood, those points don't help you reach an Ultimate.
- Manuals gate the perks. Swordmastery and Witchcraft perks need their Manuals before you can buy them, so you can have spare points and still be stuck short of 35 (see our skill tree guide).
- Corruption only goes up by drinking blood. Use Voracious Bite in fights, drink from enemies and animals, and take Vrakhiri blood from bosses. PowerPyx notes that "it even counts while you're at full health" and that most players hit 15 "around halfway through" a run. Our Corruption guide covers the fastest sources.
- Many perks also cost time. Higher-tier upgrades use time segments on the 30-day clock as well as skill points (Polygon, G2A). Buy them in batches between story beats so you don't waste time.
All 9 Ultimate perks ranked
This is our ranking, based on how often each Ultimate fires, which half of the day it works in, and how much it helps on Challenging and Duelist. The effects come from the Fextralife perks page and are cross-checked against Polygon, G2A and Method where they cover the same perk.
| Rank | Ultimate | Tree | Effect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sword Sage | Swordmastery | Resets active ability cooldowns when you kill an enemy | Best overall. Works in both forms |
| 2 | Renounce Death | Vampirism | Once per combat, a fatal blow gives you Immortality plus lifesteal for 10s instead of killing you | Best safety net for bosses |
| 3 | Sanguine Renewal | Vampirism | Voracious Bite resets all active ability cooldowns | Night-only Sword Sage that also heals |
| 4 | Aether Cascade | Witchcraft | +20% Witchcraft ability damage per Witchcraft ability used, up to +100%. Resets after combat | Best boss damage for casters |
| 5 | Lethal Crescendo | Vampirism | +20% claw damage after a kill or after breaking a boss health segment. Stacks, resets after combat | Best for claw builds |
| 6 | Entwined Torment | Witchcraft | Your first Witchcraft ability in each fight hits 2 enemies | Good against groups |
| 7 | Tactical Mastery | Swordmastery | −1 Activation Charge cost on all active abilities (minimum 1) | Solid, but Sword Sage does more |
| 8 | Runic Bulwark | Witchcraft | 15% chance to apply a random Hex on a Perfect Block | Fun on parry builds, but random |
| 9 | Last Stand | Swordmastery | +100% weapon damage while under 30% health | Huge number, risky to use |
Why Sword Sage ranks first
Swordmastery is the only tree that works around the clock. GameSpot describes it as usable "both in human form during the day and vampire form at night." That makes Sword Sage the only Ultimate that helps in every fight. It works best with active abilities that cost Activation Charges, like Artery Strike and Broad Swing. In a group fight, each kill gives you your full kit back. Polygon's pick is the same: "go for Sword Sage as your ultimate — it'll take care of lengthy cooldowns." Method's swordsman build and G2A's perks guide both pick it too.
Last Stand is the risky alternative. Double weapon damage sounds great, but you only get it below 30% health. On Duelist, enemies hit hard enough that sitting at low health usually just gets you killed. Tactical Mastery is the steady middle option. It's only listed on Fextralife among the sources we checked, so look at the in-game tooltip before you spend the points.
What is the best vampire Ultimate in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
Renounce Death for most players, Lethal Crescendo if you mainly fight with claws. That's Method's split too: "Renounce Death for sword vampire builds, and Lethal Crescendo for claw builds." Method calls Renounce Death "the superior all-round perk of the two," because lifesteal and a second chance count for a lot in long boss fights. G2A also names it the safest Vampirism Ultimate "for almost every build."
Sanguine Renewal is the best choice if you use active abilities a lot at night. Each Voracious Bite already heals you and adds Corruption, and with this Ultimate it also resets every cooldown. That lets you chain Blood Surge, Piercing Shriek and Shadowstorm much more often. Polygon recommends it as the Vampirism pick. The catch is that it only works at night, so on its own it's weaker than Sword Sage.
Two naming notes before you search the wiki:
- Some guides call Renounce Death "Rebound Death." It's the same perk with the same effect.
- Early wiki lists put Mandrake Ward (refills your Blood bar after a fatal blow, once per night) among the Ultimates. The current Fextralife perks page lists the three Vampirism Ultimates as Lethal Crescendo, Renounce Death and Sanguine Renewal, and Mandrake Ward isn't one of them. If your tree shows something different, trust the game.
What is the best Witchcraft Ultimate?
There's no clear winner here. Each major guide picks a different one, because each Witchcraft Ultimate suits a different style:
- Aether Cascade (Polygon's pick). It builds up to +100% Witchcraft damage over a fight. Polygon admits you "may not achieve +100% damage in regular skirmishes, but it can be a game-changer during boss battles." Take it if you cast in long fights.
- Entwined Torment (Method's pick). Your opening Hex hits two targets. Method chose it because group fights are "when combat is at its toughest." Take it if you get swarmed a lot.
- Runic Bulwark (G2A's pick). It turns Perfect Blocks into random Hexes. G2A says it "fits naturally into a Perfect Block hybrid build," so it's a good fit if you parry a lot anyway.
Keep in mind that Witchcraft only works in daylight. Coen's runes heal over when he turns vampire, and his Hexes stay sealed until sunrise (our Witchcraft and Hexes guide explains why). Since your Hexes are sealed after dark, Aether Cascade and Entwined Torment do nothing at night.
One more source conflict: some early guides described Aether Cascade as reducing your next ability's cost instead of adding damage. Fextralife and Polygon both list the +20% per cast, up to +100% version now, so we rank it on that.
Which Ultimates should you combine?
Since you can hold one per tree, think in pairs:
- Swordsman (easiest, any difficulty): Sword Sage, plus Renounce Death once you reach Corruption 15. Corruption comes free from biting, so you only spend 4 extra points to get the second Ultimate.
- Night vampire: Renounce Death or Lethal Crescendo, with Sword Sage as the second pick, since your sword still works at night. See our Vampirism abilities guide for the loadout.
- Day caster: Aether Cascade or Entwined Torment, plus Renounce Death for night safety. This is the most point-hungry pair, because Witchcraft perks also need Manuals.
- Trophy hunters: You need all three Ultimate trophies for the Platinum. PowerPyx's method is to bank points late in the game, make a manual save, buy one tree's Ultimate, then reload and buy another. Our trophy guide has the full roadmap.

Can you change your Ultimate perk after Update 1.1?
Not yet. That may change once Update 1.1 is out. On October 16, 2026, Rebel Wolves announced Update 1.1, "planned for next week." It adds the Draught of Mind Rebirth: "Forget all your Swordmastery, Witchcraft, and Vampirism abilities, and use the time you spent learning them to master a different set of abilities." That sounds like a full respec, but as of October 19, 2026 the patch isn't live. Rebel Wolves also hasn't said whether the Draught resets Ultimates, where you get it, or how often you can use it. Until it ships, treat your Ultimate as permanent. Our respec guide tracks what's confirmed.
Common Ultimate mistakes to avoid
- Thinking you only get one Ultimate in total. You get one per tree. If you've avoided your Vampirism Ultimate because you already have Sword Sage, go get it.
- Spending on abilities while trying to reach 35. Only perk points count. Put points into perks first, then buy abilities.
- Spreading points across all three trees. The fastest way to miss every Ultimate is to spend evenly everywhere. Pick one point-gated tree and push it to 35.
- Not drinking blood. Corruption has no stat or ending penalty, and it's the only thing gating the Vampirism Ultimate. Bite enemies in every night fight.
- Copying an Ultimate name from one wiki. With the Renounce/Rebound naming and old roster lists still around, check the tooltip in your own tree before spending the points.

FAQ
What is the best Ultimate perk in The Blood of Dawnwalker? Sword Sage, for most players. It resets your active ability cooldowns on every kill, and because Swordmastery works day and night, it's the only Ultimate that helps in every fight. Polygon, Method and G2A all recommend it as the Swordmastery pick.
How many Ultimate perks can you have in The Blood of Dawnwalker? Up to three, one in each tree. Picking an Ultimate locks the other two in that tree, not in the other trees. PowerPyx and Game8 both confirm the one-per-tree rule, and each tree has its own Ultimate trophy.
How many skill points does an Ultimate cost? For Swordmastery and Witchcraft, you need 35 skill points spent on that tree's perks, then 4 more for the Ultimate, so 39 in total (PowerPyx). Points spent on abilities don't count toward the 35.
How do you unlock the Vampirism Ultimate? Raise Corruption to 15, the maximum, by drinking blood, then spend 4 skill points. There's no minimum number of points you have to spend in the Vampirism tree first.
What is the best vampire Ultimate perk? Renounce Death for most builds, because it turns one fatal blow per combat into 10 seconds of immortality and lifesteal. Pick Lethal Crescendo if you fight mainly with claws, or Sanguine Renewal if you chain a lot of active abilities at night.
Can you reset your Ultimate perk? Not on the current build. Update 1.1 adds the Draught of Mind Rebirth, which resets your abilities, but as of October 19, 2026 it isn't live, and Rebel Wolves hasn't confirmed whether it also resets Ultimates.
