How to Unlock Dark Matter in Black Ops 6: Every Camo Challenge & the Fastest Grind Route (All 33 Weapons)

Black Ops 6 Dark Matter animated Multiplayer Mastery camo — the deep-purple cosmic nebula finish shown across an assault rifle

Dark Matter is still the single most recognizable flex in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 — a swirling, animated cosmic finish that tells everyone in the lobby you took every gun in the game to the top of the Mastery ladder. It isn't bought, it isn't in a bundle, and it isn't handed out for a battle-pass tier. It's earned, one weapon at a time, through the deepest camo grind Treyarch has shipped. This guide lays out exactly what Dark Matter requires, the full four-tier camo ladder that leads to it, the precise per-weapon challenge at each step, and the fastest realistic route to finish it without burning out.

Quick answer: To unlock Dark Matter in Black Ops 6 you must complete the full Multiplayer Mastery ladder on all 33 launch weapons: earn Gold on a weapon, Diamond on every gun in its category, then Dark Spine on all 33 weapons, and finally the Dark Matter challenge — 5 kills without dying, 3 times — on each of those 33 guns. Dark Matter unlocks per weapon as you finish it, and once earned it's an animated universal-look camo for that gun. There is no shortcut and no purchase: it's Gold → Diamond → Dark Spine → Dark Matter, thirty-three times over. (Zombies has its own animated pinnacle, Nebula, on a separate track.)

Below is the roadmap, the exact challenges, and where the real time sinks — and time-savers — are.

What is the Dark Matter camo in Black Ops 6?

Dark Matter is the top of the Multiplayer Mastery camo ladder — the animated, deep-purple nebula finish awarded only after you've mastered the entire base arsenal. It sits above the three tiers most players stop at (Gold, Diamond, and Dark Spine), and it's the reason the grind has a reputation: you don't earn Dark Matter on a gun, you earn it on the whole game.

  • It's animated and universal-look. Unlike the flat Military and Special camos, Dark Matter is a moving cosmic finish. Once you unlock it on a weapon, that weapon wears the animated camo — and finishing it across the roster is the visible badge that you cleared everything.
  • It's the Multiplayer pinnacle. Dark Matter is specifically the Multiplayer mastery reward. Zombies has its own equivalent animated pinnacle, Nebula, earned on a completely separate camo track (see below). The two don't share progress.
  • It can't be bought. There is no store SKU, no COD-Points shortcut, and no event to skip it. Every weapon has to clear all four tiers.

That "all four tiers, all weapons" structure is the entire challenge. Here's the ladder in order.

The Black Ops 6 Mastery camo ladder (in order)

Every Multiplayer weapon climbs the same four Mastery tiers. Each tier is gated behind completing the previous tier across a required set of weapons, plus a specific challenge on the individual gun:

TierWhat you must have firstPer-weapon challenge
GoldAll Military + Special camos on that weaponComplete the weapon's final camo challenge
DiamondGold on every weapon in that category (e.g. all ARs)3 kills without dying, 10 times
Dark SpineDiamond on all 33 weapons3 triple kills or better (per weapon)
Dark MatterDark Spine on all 33 weapons5 kills without dying, 3 times

A few things that trip people up:

  • Diamond is per-category, Dark Spine and Dark Matter are per-roster. You can earn Diamond on a single weapon class in isolation. But Dark Spine only unlocks once every gun has Diamond, and Dark Matter only opens once every gun has Dark Spine. That's why the last two tiers feel like a wall — you can't cherry-pick your favorite guns.
  • Launchers have their own version of the Dark Spine challenge. Because you can't reliably chain triple kills with a launcher, the Dark Spine step for launchers asks for five destructions of scorestreaks or enemy equipment in a match, three times instead. The Diamond and Dark Matter steps still apply.
  • Melee and special weapons follow adapted challenges too, but the four-tier structure is identical.

As one widely cited BO6 camo breakdown puts it: "Dark Matter: Unlock Dark Spine camo on 33 weapons, plus get five kills without dying three times." That one line is the whole endgame — the hard part is the "on 33 weapons."

How many weapons do you need for Dark Matter?

33. Black Ops 6 launched with 33 weapons, and that's the number the Mastery track is built around: 33 Golds, 33 Diamonds, 33 Dark Spines, then 33 Dark Matters. Every one of those is its own challenge.

Two caveats worth knowing:

  • Seasonal weapons add to the grind. New guns added across BO6's post-launch seasons get their own full camo tracks. Dark Matter as a complete look means keeping up with those additions, but the core mastery — the version that flips your account to Dark Matter — is built on the 33-weapon launch roster.
  • The math is brutal but linear. Counting the base camo challenges plus the three mastery challenges on every gun, you're looking at hundreds of individual objectives. There's no wasted motion, though — every kill you get on the Diamond step is also feeding your weapon level and account XP.

What is the fastest way to get Dark Matter in Black Ops 6?

The grind is long, but the route matters more than raw hours. Here's the efficient order:

  • Go category by category, not gun by gun. Because Diamond needs Gold on an entire weapon class, pick one class (ARs are the most forgiving), gold every weapon in it, then sweep Diamond across the class in one sitting. Finishing a class fully is faster than bouncing between guns.
  • Do the camo challenges in modes that feed them. Objective modes like Hardpoint and Domination keep bodies in one place — ideal for the "kills without dying" streak challenges at the Diamond and Dark Matter tiers. Kill Confirmed and Nuketown 24/7 are the classic grind playlists for volume.
  • Batch the streak challenges. Diamond wants 3-kills-without-dying ten times; Dark Matter wants 5-kills-without-dying three times. Both reward playing a little safer than usual — hold strong angles, use a scorestreak setup that protects your streak (UAV → SAM/Sentry), and cash in when you're already hot rather than pushing.
  • Use easier lobbies for the worst weapons. The pistols, launchers, and low-mobility LMGs are where most players stall. Grinding those in low-skill or bot lobbies turns the hardest guns from a multi-hour slog into a clean run — which is exactly why bot-lobby access is the most common accelerator for camo grinders. (See our BO6 bot-lobby guide for how that works and the account-safety trade-offs.)
  • Knock out Dark Spine and Dark Matter last, in one push. Since both only unlock after the previous tier is done on all 33, treat them as dedicated "closer" phases rather than mixing them in early.

The honest reality: a full Dark Matter grind is tens of hours even for strong players, and the last two tiers front-load the difficulty because they demand the whole roster. That's the exact point where players either commit to a long grind or hand the worst weapons off to a service.

Dark Matter vs Nebula: which is which?

They get confused constantly, so to be clear:

  • Dark Matter = the animated Multiplayer Mastery pinnacle, earned via the Gold → Diamond → Dark Spine → Dark Matter chain on all 33 MP weapons.
  • Nebula = the animated Zombies Mastery pinnacle, earned on a separate Zombies camo track (with its own Zombies-specific challenges). It's the Dark Matter of Zombies mode.

Progress does not carry between them. Grinding Dark Matter in Multiplayer does nothing for Nebula in Zombies and vice-versa. If you want both animated finishes, you're running two full camo campaigns. (Chasing the Zombies pinnacle instead? Our BO6 Nebula service covers that track.)

Do it yourself or skip the grind?

If you enjoy the grind, the route above is the efficient way to finish it. But Dark Matter is precisely the kind of long, weapon-by-weapon commitment where a lot of players want the flex without the tens of hours — especially for the launchers, pistols, and off-meta guns nobody enjoys grinding.

That's the exact gap our service fills:

- BO6 Dark Matter Camo Unlock — the full Multiplayer mastery grind completed by pro players, animated Dark Matter on your account, fast and secure.

- BO6 Nebula Camo — the Zombies-mode animated pinnacle on the separate track.

- BO6 Bot Lobbies — DIY accelerator: easy lobbies to sweep the streak challenges on your worst weapons yourself.

Whether you grind it or skip it, the requirement is the same — and now you know exactly what "the same" means: four tiers, 33 weapons, one animated camo at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock Dark Matter in Black Ops 6? You complete the full Multiplayer Mastery ladder on all 33 launch weapons: earn Gold on a weapon, Diamond on every gun in its category (3 kills without dying, 10 times each), Dark Spine on all 33 weapons (3 triple kills each), and finally the Dark Matter challenge — 5 kills without dying, 3 times — on each weapon. Dark Matter unlocks per gun as you finish it.

How many weapons do you need for Dark Matter in BO6? 33 — the launch roster. You need Gold, then Diamond, then Dark Spine, then Dark Matter on all of them. Seasonal weapons added later have their own tracks but the core mastery is built on the 33 base weapons.

What is the Dark Matter challenge in Black Ops 6? After you've unlocked Dark Spine on all 33 weapons, each gun's final Dark Matter challenge is to get 5 kills without dying, 3 times with that weapon. Objective modes and safer, streak-protecting play make this the most reliable way to clear it.

Is Dark Matter or Nebula harder in Black Ops 6? They're comparable full-track grinds on different modes — Dark Matter is the Multiplayer pinnacle, Nebula is the Zombies pinnacle. Neither shares progress, so earning both means completing two separate camo campaigns.

Can you buy the Dark Matter camo in Black Ops 6? No. There's no store purchase or COD-Points shortcut in-game — it's earned only. Boosting services can complete the grind on your account, but Dark Matter itself is never sold by Activision as a bundle.

What's the fastest way to grind Dark Matter? Work one weapon category at a time, use objective modes (Hardpoint, Domination) and high-volume playlists (Nuketown 24/7, Kill Confirmed) for the streak challenges, protect your kill streaks with defensive scorestreaks, and use easy lobbies for your worst weapons. Save Dark Spine and Dark Matter for dedicated closing pushes since they need the whole roster first.
