How to Get Hierarchy of Needs in Destiny 2: Spire of the Watcher, Drop Rate & Catalyst (2026)

Hierarchy of Needs is a random Exotic drop from the final boss of the Spire of the Watcher dungeon, and there's no quest for it. Your timing is good. Spire is predicted to be a featured dungeon from the November 3, 2026 reset, alongside Pit of Heresy, which makes the coming week the best one to run it.

This guide covers where the bow drops, what raises the odds, how the catalyst works, and a full walkthrough of the dungeon. It's written for Season: Lawless in the Renegades era, under the loot rules from Update 9.7.0 "Monument of Triumph" (June 9, 2026).

Quick answer: Hierarchy of Needs only drops from Persys, Primordial Ruin, the last boss of Spire of the Watcher. It's a random drop, and Bungie has never published the rate. Five dungeon triumphs each raise your odds: Devil in the Details, Resident Vexpert, The Magnificent One, Mind the Vexplosion and Untarnished Grit. Run Persys on each class, and farm it while Spire is featured. The catalyst comes from Master Spire after you own the bow, and it needs 700 kills to complete.

Key Takeaways

  • Source: random drop from Persys only. No quest, no vendor step.
  • Odds: Bungie hasn't published a rate. Community estimates sit around 5% before triumph boosts.
  • Five triumphs raise the chance. Start with Devil in the Details, which is just six recordings.
  • Featured week: Spire is predicted for November 3–10, 2026. Confirm it at the 9:00 AM Pacific reset.
  • Catalyst: Panoptic Tessellation, from Master Spire, finished with 700 kills.
  • Dungeon: 1–3 players, three loot encounters, and one mechanic that runs through all of them: Arc circuits.

How do you get Hierarchy of Needs in Destiny 2?

There are four steps:

  • Unlock Spire of the Watcher. It sits in the Director's raid and dungeon list. A locked node means your account doesn't own it.
  • Clear the dungeon to Persys. Only the final encounter can drop the bow. Destinypedia lists it as a random drop from the dungeon, and Polygon's guide names Persys as the source.
  • Claim the triumphs you can reach, so every later clear has better odds.
  • Kill Persys on each class. Outside a featured week you get one eligible attempt per class per week, so a Hunter, a Titan and a Warlock give you three rolls. A second character of the same class adds nothing.

What is the Hierarchy of Needs drop rate?

Bungie has never published it. Community estimates land around 5%, so treat that as a rough guide and not a fact. In a Hierarchy of Needs thread on r/destiny2 from this weekend, one player needed more than 30 clears, and another had soloed the dungeon and still had no drop.

The in-game reward text on these triumphs is short and clear:

"Increases initial chance for Hierarchy of Needs to drop." (Triumph reward text, via light.gg)

Eurogamer and Polygon list the same five triumphs:

TriumphWhat you doDifficulty
Devil in the DetailsFind all six Devilish RecordingsEasy, do it first
Resident VexpertClear Spire on MasterMedium, also needed for the catalyst
Mind the VexplosionComplete all encounters without dyingMedium in a good team
The Magnificent OneComplete all encounters soloHard
Untarnished GritComplete all encounters solo without dyingVery hard

Community breakdowns suggest Untarnished Grit counts for more than the others. Bungie hasn't confirmed that, so don't grind a solo flawless for the bow alone. All six recordings sit before the second encounter, according to Polygon, so one slow run clears the easiest boost.

Can you farm Hierarchy of Needs?

Yes, while Spire is featured. Bungie's Update 9.7.0 notes rotate two raids and two dungeons each week. Player reports on Bungie's forums and Reddit say a featured dungeon's Exotic can be farmed without the weekly limit, though Bungie hasn't spelled that out for Spire. Outside featured weeks, plan on one attempt per class.

The fastest loop is a Persys checkpoint. Dungeons save at each encounter, so a fireteam holding the final-boss save can load straight into Persys without replaying the climb. Here's the order to work in during a featured week:

  • Open with a full run on your main character to grab the weekly Tier 5 chests and the Director challenge.
  • Pick up any missing recordings on that same run.
  • Swap to checkpoint runs on Persys.

Is Hierarchy of Needs worth farming?

Hierarchy of Needs Exotic Solar bow from the Spire of the Watcher dungeon in Destiny 2

Yes, if you like slower, positional weapons. It's an Exotic Solar Combat Bow in the Energy slot. Precision hits and kills build Guidance Ring energy, and Destinypedia puts the requirement at six charges. A hip-fire shot then places the ring in front of you.

The payoff is the exotic trait:

"Arrows fired through a Guidance Ring release seeking projectiles, which do more damage based on distance traveled." (Apollonic Tangent, Hierarchy of Needs perk text, via Destinypedia)

So stand back, shoot through the ring and let the seekers find targets. Polygon described it as capable of clearing hordes of enemies at once. The trade-off is its slow draw, which the catalyst softens.

How do you get the Hierarchy of Needs catalyst?

Clear Spire of the Watcher on Master after you own the bow. Destinypedia says the catalyst can drop from Master completions, and many guides call it guaranteed, though Bungie hasn't confirmed the odds. Complete it with 700 kills. Some older guides say 500, but both Destinypedia and the Destiny 2 Wiki list 700.

The finished catalyst adds Panoptic Tessellation:

"Deploying a Guidance Ring or striking a target with a seeking projectile improves draw time and reload speed for a moderate duration." (Panoptic Tessellation, via Destinypedia)

A Master clear also earns Resident Vexpert, so it's worth doing before the bow drops if your team can handle it. It raises your odds and, per Eurogamer, rewards the Into the Sunset Exotic Sparrow.

What is Spire of the Watcher and how do you unlock it?

Spire of the Watcher launched on December 9, 2022, during Season of the Seraph. It's a 1–3 player dungeon set in the Ares Spire on Mars, where the Sol Divisive Vex are trying to steal Rasputin's submind data. Matchmaking is disabled, so bring a team or go solo.

It was sold as part of the Witch Queen Dungeon Key, so check the Director. If the node is locked, your account doesn't have the content.

How do Arc circuits work in Spire of the Watcher?

Every encounter uses one mechanic:

  • Kill a Conduit Minotaur. It leaves a pool on the ground.
  • Stand in the pool for the Arctrician buff, which lasts 30 seconds.
  • Shoot or activate the diamond-shaped Arc nodes along a yellow cable, in order from the start node to the end node.
  • Each node adds about five seconds to the buff, and Polygon's walkthrough notes that powered sections stay powered.

Red cables work differently. You can hit those nodes in any order, but all of them must be activated within a short window or they reset.

Opening: How do you reach the first encounter?

Clear the outpost, then complete four circuits that end at the generator in the middle. Supplicants spawn after a circuit finishes, so Destinypedia's walkthrough suggests leaving each one nearly done and finishing them close together.

The doors open into a long shaft. Slow your fall or you'll die at the bottom. From the entrance hall, climb the vent on the upper left and cross the Reactor Firewall jumping section.

Secret chest #1 is here. From the second high catwalk, jump around the back of the pillars to the catwalk leading away from the central pillar. The chest is on a ledge behind the last pillar.

Encounter 1: How do you beat Ascend the Spire?

This is a race, not a boss fight. You'll power two circuits on each of three floors, for six in total, which turns on a gravity lift to the next level.

  • Floor 1: the Minotaur and start nodes are at the back, and the lift is on the opposite side.
  • Floor 2: Arc gates split the floor in half. Jump around them on the side platforms.
  • Floor 3: you arrive next to a start node and the first Minotaur. The second circuit runs the other way around.

Check under catwalks and on the sides of the tower for hidden nodes. Clearing the third floor drops your first loot.

Encounter 2: How do you beat Akelous, the Siren's Current?

Akelous, the Siren's Current, the giant Harpy boss at the top of the Ares Spire

Kill the Minotaur Akelous is holding to start the fight. The arena is a central platform with four long arms, numbered 1 to 4, and each arm ends in a fuel rod.

  • Get Arctrician and run a circuit from the center out along each arm to its fuel rod.
  • After three rods, regroup, then activate the fourth together.
  • Akelous moves to the last rod and opens its wings. Destroy all the eyes quickly, since faster clears leave more damage time.
  • The core opens and Akelous drifts backward. Move with it and keep shooting.
  • Take cover before the end of the phase. Its blast knocks players back, and it can throw you off the tower.

Linear Fusion Rifles and rockets both work here. High fire rate weapons, such as Trace Rifles, make the eyes faster.

How do you descend the Spire and find the second chest?

The door in the middle of the Akelous arena leads down. The next rooms use red circuits, with fan shafts between them. You can skip the fan timing by going through the crevices in the shaft walls.

Secret chest #2 is in the room ringed by Arc gates, just before the boss. Under the stairs at each corner there's a vent cover. One of them opens into a shaft with the chest inside. The room is symmetrical, so you may need to check more than one.

Final boss: How do you beat Persys, Primordial Ruin?

Persys, Primordial Ruin, the Wyvern final boss of Spire of the Watcher, facing a Guardian in cowboy armor

The arena has two rooms: the big room you enter, and the reactor core. Persys starts shielded. You have to trap it in the core and purge the reactor.

  • Destroy the two Incarcerator Hydras on either side of the big room. This spawns the Conduit Minotaurs.
  • Take Arctrician and activate the five red nodes: four on the pillars and one above the main door.
  • Two of four yellow circuits go live, starting on the outer faces of the pillars and running into the core.
  • Work both almost to the end, and stop before the final nodes.
  • Lure Persys into the core, then finish both circuits. Finishing early is the classic mistake, and it can force a reset.
  • Leave the core and refresh Arctrician from a Minotaur.
  • Hit all five red nodes again. The door seals, the reactor purges and Persys is exposed.

The damage phase is short, and the critical spot is the Wyvern's small core. Stand in the big room with a Well of Radiance and use your best burst heavy. If Persys survives, its shield returns and you repeat the cycle.

What is the Spire of the Watcher loot table in 2026?

Under Monument of Triumph, Spire's Legendary gear is tiered. Rewards work like this:

Where it dropsFeatured weekOther weeks
StandardTier 5, farmableTier 3
MasterTier 5, farmableTier 5

While Spire is featured, the Director challenge and both secret chests also give Tier 5 gear once a week.

EncounterWeaponsArmor
Ascend the SpireTerminus Horizon, Long Arm, Seventh Seraph CarbineArms, Legs, Helmet
AkelousTerminus Horizon, Seventh Seraph Officer RevolverArms, Chest, Class item
PersysHierarchy of Needs, Liminal Vigil, Wilderflight, plus any other dungeon weaponAny slot

The four refreshed weapons all carry the Tex Balanced Stock origin trait. Yardbarker's Monument of Triumph breakdown recommends these PvE rolls:

  • Long Arm (Arc Scout Rifle): Rolling Storm + Explosive Payload.
  • Terminus Horizon (Arc Machine Gun): Reconstruction + Jolting Feedback.
  • Wilderflight (Void Grenade Launcher): Envious Arsenal + Aggregate Charge.
  • Liminal Vigil (Stasis Sidearm): look for Rimestealer in the fourth column.

The prize beyond the bow is the TM Custom armor set. Its 4-piece, High Noon, gives freshly drawn weapons increased precision damage, with a further benefit on Tex Balanced Stock weapons and Tex Mechanica Exotics. Yardbarker calls it one of the strongest damage set bonuses in PvE. If you want more farm routes, read our Tier 5 armor farm guide.

Can you solo Spire of the Watcher?

Yes, and The Magnificent One and Untarnished Grit reward it. It's long, though. Akelous is the usual wall, because you have to run all four arms yourself and then burn the core alone. Persys is harder still, since you have to arm the circuits, lure the boss and seal the door without anyone covering you.

Bring a survivable build and a Heavy you can keep firing during short windows. Don't push on the final node until Persys is fully inside the core.

If you're working through the other dungeons, these walkthroughs use the same format: the Duality dungeon guide, the Pit of Heresy dungeon guide and the Grasp of Avarice dungeon guide. Short on Power? Start with how to power level fast.

FAQ

Where does Hierarchy of Needs drop? Only from Persys, Primordial Ruin, the final boss of Spire of the Watcher. It doesn't drop from the earlier encounters, and there's no Exotic quest for it.

How many runs does it take to get Hierarchy of Needs? There's no fixed number, because the drop is random and Bungie hasn't published a rate. Community estimates sit near 5% before triumph boosts, and players in recent threads report needing more than 30 clears.

Is Spire of the Watcher featured this week? Not until the next reset. The October 27 – November 3, 2026 featured dungeons are Duality and The Shattered Throne. D2RAD's rotation predicts Spire and Pit of Heresy from November 3, but that isn't confirmed until the 9:00 AM Pacific reset.

Do you need Master for Hierarchy of Needs? No. The bow can drop on Standard or Master. You need Master for the catalyst, and for the Resident Vexpert triumph.

How do you complete the Hierarchy of Needs catalyst? Get 700 kills with the bow after the catalyst drops from a Master clear. The finished catalyst adds Panoptic Tessellation, which improves draw time and reload speed after you deploy a ring or land a seeking hit.

Why did the Persys fight reset? Most likely someone finished the last yellow circuit before Persys walked into the reactor core. Hold the final nodes until it's inside, then finish both.

Facts verified against Destinypedia, light.gg, Bungie's Update 9.7.0 notes, Eurogamer, Polygon and D2RAD. Current for Season: Lawless (Renegades era), Monument of Triumph loot rules. Updated November 1, 2026.
