Quick Answer: A Fallout 76 launcher build in 2026 is an Intelligence and Perception build, not a Strength one. The damage comes from Demolition Expert (Intelligence, 3 ranks) and the blast size from Grenadier (Perception, up to twice the radius). Bullet Storm, the Strength card that powers miniguns, does almost nothing for launchers. Pick the Auto Grenade Launcher for sustained fire (12-round magazine), the Missile Launcher for the biggest single hit (968 area damage at level 50), or the Hellstorm Missile Launcher for the only launcher that also scales with heavy gun bonuses. Take Hardy (up to 45% less explosion damage taken) so your own blasts don't kill you. Applies to Season 26 "Beware the Blood Moon!" and the October 20, 2026 update.
Why Does a Launcher Build Need Its Own Guide?
Most Fallout 76 heavy weapon guides are written for miniguns, Gatling guns and LMGs. Those builds stack Bullet Storm from Strength, gaining damage for every 30 rounds you fire. Launchers break that model completely. A Missile Launcher holds 1 round. An M79 holds 1 round. Even the Auto Grenade Launcher only holds 12.
On top of that, launcher damage is almost all area damage. The fallout.wiki entry for the Missile Launcher puts the rule plainly: "Like all explosive launchers, critical and sneak attacks will only increase the direct impact damage." The direct impact on a Missile Launcher is just 5 damage. Everything else is the explosion.
So a launcher build is really an explosion build. It scales with the perks that touch explosions, not with the perks that touch bullets. That is also why this guide is separate from our Fallout 76 explosive build, which centers on the Fat Man and mini nukes. Here the focus is the four launchers you can actually run all day on ammo you can craft.
Three verified numbers frame the build:
- 968 area damage on a level 50 Missile Launcher, per fallout.wiki.
- 2x blast radius from Grenadier rank 2.
- 45% less explosion damage taken from Hardy rank 3.
Which Launcher Should You Use in Fallout 76?
All four launchers are tagged as both Heavy Gun and Explosive on fallout.wiki. They are very different weapons in play, though.
| Launcher | Area damage (top level) | Magazine | Fire rate | Weight | Ammo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Grenade Launcher | 244 (lvl 50) | 12 | 100 | 18.0 | 40mm Grenade Round |
| Missile Launcher | 968 (lvl 50) | 1 | 2 | 20.0 | Missile |
| M79 Grenade Launcher | 522 (lvl 45) | 1 | 3 | 6.0 | 40mm Grenade Round |
| Hellstorm Missile Launcher | 379 impact + 379 area (lvl 50) | 4 | 14 | 13.0 | Missile |
| Fat Man (for comparison) | 1,386 (lvl 45) | 1 | 2 | 20.0 | Mini Nuke |
Stats from the fallout.wiki pages for each weapon, checked on October 27, 2026.
Auto Grenade Launcher: the all-rounder
The Auto Grenade Launcher is the only launcher with real sustained fire. A 12-round magazine and a fire rate of 100 mean you can clear a whole event spawn wave before reloading. Each grenade hits for less than a missile (244 area damage at level 50), but you fire far more of them.
Its plan is easy to get. fallout.wiki lists it at the Brotherhood and Raiders vendors in Whitespring, Vendor Bot Phoenix in Watoga and the Raider station vendor bots, always available from level 40. It can also drop in the Ash Heap, the Mire and Cranberry Bog, including from Line in the Sand and Radiation Rumble.
Mods are simple: three barrels (Standard, Long and Heavy). fallout.wiki describes the Heavy barrel as "Improved range and damage", so it is the default pick.
Missile Launcher: the biggest single hit
The Missile Launcher is the burst option. At level 50 it deals 968 area damage per missile. That is about 70% of a Fat Man's blast on ammo that is far cheaper to craft.
The catch is acquisition. No vendor sells the plan. Per fallout.wiki, the plan is a guaranteed reward from the quest Key to the Past, a low-chance reward from Personal Matters, and a very rare drop from Ash Heap and Mire events.
The key mods are the Triple and Quad barrels, which raise how many missiles you hold, and the Targeting Computer, which locks on and lets you "fire and forget". The quad-barrel, targeting-computer setup is the classic launcher-main loadout.
Hellstorm Missile Launcher: the hybrid
The Hellstorm arrived with the Steel Dawn update. fallout.wiki says "the weapon is unique in that it benefits from both explosive and heavy gun damage buffs." Its impact damage scales with heavy gun perks, and its secondary explosion scales with Demolition Expert.
It fires 4 missiles per magazine at a fire rate of 14. You get one standard copy from the quest Disarming Discovery. The plan drops from Daily Ops, and legendary versions come from Murmrgh, Daily Ops and public events. Its payload mods (Napalm, Plasma, Cryo and the Enhanced blast barrel) cost 200 Gold Bullion each from Regs.
Bethesda touched it this month. The October 20, 2026 update notes on fallout.bethesda.net say: "Addressed explosive damage calculation issues with Gamma Gun, Cremator, Resolve Breaker, and Hellstorm Missile Launcher." If you shelved your Hellstorm earlier in the season because the numbers felt off, re-test it now.
M79 Grenade Launcher: the budget sidearm
The M79 weighs only 6.0, less than half of any other launcher. It hits for 522 area damage at level 45 and its plan is sold from level 15 by the Raiders vendor at Whitespring, Vendor Bot Raider at the stations and Vendor Bot Resin at the Pleasant Valley Ski Resort.
That makes it the best launcher for a player who mains another weapon and wants one big-hit option for tagging event mobs and clearing groups.
What Are the Best Perks for a Launcher Build?
Intelligence: Demolition Expert
Demolition Expert is the engine of the build. It is an Intelligence card with 3 ranks that boosts the damage of every explosion: grenades, mines, launchers and the Explosive legendary effect. fallout.wiki's Demolition Expert page describes each rank as +20% in its gameplay section. The same page's rank table lists +20%, +30% and +40%, so check the exact rank 3 number on your in-game card. Either way, nothing else in the game adds as much launcher damage.
It also boosts explosive legendary perks such as Collateral Damage, and the Unstable Isotope and Electrically Charged mutations.
Stabilized is also Intelligence now: "Big guns gain 30% accuracy. Double in Power Armor." Launcher shots are slow and arc, so the accuracy bonus helps a lot if you run Power Armor. Note that Stabilized no longer gives armor penetration. That was removed in Patch 1.7.21.25, and plenty of older guides still list it.
Perception: Grenadier
Grenadier has 2 ranks. Rank 1: "Your explosives detonate with a 50% larger radius." Rank 2: "Your explosives detonate with twice the radius." fallout.wiki notes it covers all explosive heavy guns.
Bethesda's Infestations update release notes also confirm: "The Grenadier perk's expanded radius bonus will now affect the damage radius for explosive ammo." A wider radius means more enemies inside the damage zone per shot. Grenadier rank 2 is mandatory.
Endurance: Hardy
Hardy is the card formerly called Fireproof. At ranks 1, 2 and 3 it cuts explosion damage you take by 15%, 30% and 45%. On a launcher build you will catch your own blasts constantly, especially with the Auto Grenade Launcher in close quarters. Hardy rank 3 makes those mistakes survivable, but it is not immunity, so keep firing at targets a few steps away rather than at your feet.
Strength: Ordnance Express, not Bullet Storm
Launcher ammo is heavy. Ordnance Express makes explosives weigh 45% less at rank 1 and 90% less at rank 2. That covers your missiles and mini nukes, which is where the weight on this build really goes.
Bullet Storm is the trap. It gives 3%, 6% or 9% damage per 30 ammo spent, up to 10 stacks, and stacks expire on reload. Back in February 2019, Bethesda's Inside the Vault said the grenade launchers were reclassified as heavy weapons but would use Demolition Expert instead of the heavy gun damage line, which has since become Bullet Storm. None of the launcher pages on fallout.wiki list Bullet Storm as a perk that affects them. Even if a stack did count, a 12-round magazine never reaches 30 shots before a reload. Spend those Strength points on Ordnance Express and carry weight instead.
The same applies to Bear Arms. It no longer reduces heavy weapon weight: since Patch 1.7.21.25 it only adds bash damage per Bullet Storm stack, so it is useless here.
Recommended card list
| SPECIAL | Card | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intelligence | Demolition Expert (rank 3) | 3 | Main explosion damage multiplier |
| Intelligence | Stabilized | 2 | +30% heavy gun accuracy, doubled in Power Armor |
| Perception | Grenadier (rank 2) | 2 | Twice the blast radius |
| Endurance | Hardy (rank 3) | 3 | 45% less explosion damage taken |
| Strength | Ordnance Express (rank 2) | 2 | Missiles and nukes weigh 90% less |
Point costs are the equip costs listed on each card's fallout.wiki page. That core costs only 12 points across five stats, so fill the rest with your usual survival and utility cards.
On ammo, plan around two pools: the Auto Grenade Launcher and the M79 both fire 40mm Grenade Rounds, while the Missile Launcher and the Hellstorm both fire Missiles. Pick launchers that share a pool and you only have to stock one ammo type. A launcher build has no Bullet Storm, Lock and Load or Bringing the Big Guns cost, which frees a lot of Strength.
Two Shot or Junkie's: Which Legendary Effect Is Best on a Launcher?
This came up on r/fo76 this week, from a player running Junkie's on everything and wondering if Two Shot is still better for launchers. One player's reply: "The 2 shot mod has pretty consistent results so that's what I go with.. all my characters carry a 2 shot m79 and 2 shot quad barrel targeting ML."
That is one player's experience, not a measured test. Here is what the effects do, per fallout.wiki's legendary weapon mod table:
- Two Shot: +1 projectile, +75% damage, -150% hip-fire accuracy, +100% recoil. On the Hellstorm, fallout.wiki confirms the extra projectile only splits the impact damage, and the explosion stays at full strength. For the other launchers this exact interaction isn't documented.
- Junkie's: +10% damage per chem addiction, up to +100%. Strong if you already run an addiction build, painful if you don't.
- Bloodied: damage rises as your health falls, up to +130%. Very risky on a weapon that can hit you with your own blast.
- Anti-Armor: +50% armor penetration. A safe all-rounder.
- Quad: +300% ammo capacity. Turns single-shot launchers into multi-shot ones and cuts reload downtime.
One more trap: you cannot roll the Explosive legendary effect on any launcher. fallout.wiki lists the Missile Launcher, Auto Grenade Launcher, M79, Hellstorm and Fat Man on its exclusion list.
Our verdict: Two Shot or Anti-Armor in the first slot for most players, Junkie's only if your build already lives with addictions, and Quad as the comfort pick on single-shot launchers. For how to farm and craft these rolls, see our Fallout 76 legendary farming guide and the best legendary effects guide.
Should You Run a Launcher Build in Power Armor?
Usually, yes. Stabilized doubles to +60% heavy gun accuracy in Power Armor, and PA's built-in damage resistance soaks the stray splash Hardy doesn't cover. Our Fallout 76 power armor build covers which frame to use.
If you prefer to stay out of PA, armor rolled with the Hardy legendary mod (2 stars, "Receive 7% Less Explosion Damage" per piece) stacks with the Hardy perk. Don't confuse it with Fireproof on armor, which now gives +25 Fire Resistance and nothing against explosions.
How Do You Play a Launcher Build Well?
- Fire at the ground under the enemy, not at the enemy. Area damage is the whole weapon. Center the blast on a group's feet.
- Don't count on crits or sneak attacks. They only increase the tiny direct-impact damage.
- Use the Auto Grenade Launcher for events, the Missile Launcher for bosses. Wide waves reward volume; single big targets reward the 968-damage hit.
- Keep an M79 as a backup on any build. At 6 weight it costs almost nothing to carry.
- Re-test the Hellstorm after October 20. Bethesda's explosive damage fix changed how it calculates damage.
- Pair launchers with a bullet weapon. A launcher main still needs something for single small targets. A heavy gunner build sidearm or the SMG build covers that.
FAQ
What is the best launcher in Fallout 76? The Auto Grenade Launcher for general play and events, because its 12-round magazine gives real sustained fire. The Missile Launcher hits hardest per shot at 968 area damage, and the Hellstorm is the only launcher that scales with both heavy gun and explosive bonuses.
Does Bullet Storm work with grenade launchers? Not in any useful way. Bethesda's 2019 heavy weapon change gave grenade launchers Demolition Expert instead of the heavy gun damage line, which is now Bullet Storm. Its stacks also need 30 shots each and expire on reload.
Is Two Shot still the best on launchers? For most players, yes. Its +75% damage applies to every launcher, and r/fo76 players report consistent results from Two Shot on the M79 and the quad-barrel Missile Launcher. Junkie's only wins if you already run a full addiction setup.
Can you get an Explosive legendary launcher? No. The Explosive effect cannot roll on the Missile Launcher, Auto Grenade Launcher, M79, Hellstorm or Fat Man.
How do I stop killing myself with launchers? Run the Hardy perk (up to 45% less explosion damage taken), use the Hardy legendary armor mod or Power Armor, and don't fire into enemies standing next to you.
Where do I get the Missile Launcher plan? It's a guaranteed reward from the quest Key to the Past. Vendors don't sell it.
So, Is a Launcher Build Worth It in 2026?
Yes, if you build it for explosions. A Fallout 76 launcher build in Season 26 is simple once you drop the minigun habits. Put your points in Demolition Expert, Grenadier and Hardy, take Ordnance Express for ammo weight, and skip Bullet Storm entirely. Use the Auto Grenade Launcher for events, the Missile Launcher for burst, and re-test the Hellstorm after the October 20 fix. Roll Two Shot or Anti-Armor first, and remember that Explosive can never roll on a launcher.
