Quick Answer
The Light Machine Gun (MG42) is a Level 30+ heavy gun with 47 base damage at Level 50, a fire rate of 159, a 75-round magazine, and a 3.66-second reload. It fires 5.56 rounds by default and can be modded to fire .308 or .45 instead. The build runs Bullet Storm, Lock and Load, and Bringing the Big Guns in Strength. The single biggest misconception: the LMG has a Rifle keyword in its game data, but that keyword does not activate Down Ranger or any Rifle perks — only Heavy gun perks apply. Any guide recommending Down Ranger for this weapon is wrong.

Why the LMG Is Worth Building in Season 26
Two updates in 2026 changed the equation for the Light Machine Gun.
First, Update 27 (Infestations, June 2, 2026) added a set of new mods specifically for the MG42, including the Calibrated Receiver for crit damage and the Large Magazine to double ammo capacity. As the official update notes state: "New weapon mods for the Light Machine Gun, learned from scrapping or from quest rewards in the Cranberry Bog or Savage Divide." That Large Magazine changes the build — 150 rounds per mag is one of the best ammunition pools of any non-minigun heavy gun, and it feeds Bullet Storm stacks faster than almost any other heavy weapon.
Second, The Slasher (Update 28, September 15, 2026) overhauled the scrip economy. Legendary Module crafting now costs 30 to 65 modules depending on the recipe tier, and scrip conversion rates tripled across every tier. A well-rolled LMG — especially one with Bloodied, Furious, or Quad — is now significantly more accessible to build toward through Gleaming Depths runs and Purveyor rolls. See the Legendary Modules Guide for the full module farming loop.
LMG Base Stats at Level 50
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Damage | 47 |
| Fire rate | 159 |
| Range | 224 |
| Accuracy | 74 |
| AP cost | 10 |
| Weight | 8.0 |
| Magazine size | 75 (standard) |
| Reload time | 3.66 seconds |
| Default ammo | 5.56 Round |
| Attack delay | 0.25 seconds |
The 0.25-second attack delay means the LMG fires immediately on trigger pull. Unlike the Minigun, Gauss Minigun, or Plasma Caster, there is no spin-up period. The weapon starts dealing damage from the first round in every engagement.

The Rifle Keyword Problem (Read This Before Building)
The LMG's game data lists "Rifle" as one of its keywords. This is the single most common source of bad advice in every LMG guide indexed in 2026.
The Rifle keyword on the LMG does not activate rifle perks. Down Ranger, Expert Down Ranger, Master Down Ranger, Rifleman, Guerrilla — none of these apply. Bethesda's own wiki notes this directly: "Rifle keyword doesn't let it work with rifle perks, but will allow it to count for challenges."
The keyword exists purely so the MG42 counts toward Rifle-based daily and weekly challenges (such as "Kill 10 enemies with a Rifle"). It contributes zero damage. Your perk card loadout should contain zero Rifle perks.
What does apply: Bullet Storm (Strength), Bloody Mess (Charisma), Stabilized (Strength, in Power Armor), One Gun Army (Strength), and Lock and Load (Strength) are the confirmed perks for the LMG per fallout.wiki's perk tables. The full Heavy gun perk tree is explained in detail in the Fallout 76 Heavy Gunner Build guide.
Core Perk Loadout
Strength (Primary Damage Tree)
| Perk | Ranks | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bullet Storm | 3 | +9% damage per 30 ammo fired, stacks to 10 (+90% max) |
| Bringing the Big Guns | 1 | Extends Bullet Storm stack cap from 10 to 20 stacks (+180% max) |
| Lock and Load | 1 | +1% reload speed per active stack; retain half stacks on reload |
| Bear Arms | 3 | -90% weight for heavy weapons |
| Stabilized | 3 | VATS accuracy + % armor ignore while in Power Armor |
Endurance / Luck
| Perk | Ranks | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ironclad | 3-5 | +10 DR/+10 ER per rank (outside Power Armor) |
| Four Leaf Clover | 1 | Each VATS miss has a chance to fill the critical meter |
| Better Criticals | 3 | +60% critical hit damage |
Note on Four Leaf Clover: since Patch 1.7.16.13, this perk fills the critical meter on VATS misses, not hits. Guides citing hit-based triggering are outdated.
Charisma
| Perk | Ranks | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bloody Mess | 3 | +15% damage with any weapon |
| Lone Wanderer | 4 | +20% damage, -30% damage taken (solo only) |
Build Variant 1: Full-Health Power Armor (Recommended for New Players)
The most straightforward setup. Equip T-65 or Hellcat Power Armor and run Stabilized for passive armor penetration in VATS.
Legendary effects to target on the LMG:
- 1-star: Anti-Armor (50% armor ignore, multiplicative with Stabilized and Tank Killer 2)
- 2-star: Explosive (15% AOE splash per projectile) or Rapid (+15% reload speed)
- 3-star: 15% reload speed bonus
Why T-65 vs Hellcat: T-65 gives 565 DR total, purchasable from Reginald Stone at Vault 79 for 6,900 Gold Bullion. Hellcat provides 436 DR plus a unique +12% ballistic damage reduction bonus. For a heavy gunner in dangerous content, T-65 wins on raw DR. Hellcat wins if you are stacking ballistic resistance on top. For a full breakdown of all PA frames for heavy builds, see the Fallout 76 Best Armor Guide.
Build Variant 2: Bloodied Unyielding (High DPS, High Risk)
The Bloodied legendary effect scales damage with missing HP, capping at approximately +95% near 1 HP. Combined with Unyielding armor (+3 to all SPECIALs below 20% HP), this build hits the highest raw damage numbers of any LMG setup.
Critical requirements:
- Keep HP below 20% (usually requires Adrenal Reaction or staying injured)
- Serendipity (Agility) for 45% chance to dodge attacks below 30% HP
- Nerd Rage (Intelligence) for +40 flat DR and +40% damage below 20% HP
- Lifegiver for passive HP management
Caution: Bloodied builds die fast. The setup punishes mistakes during public events and raids. Recommended only after you have the full Unyielding armor set and understand HP management.
Build Variant 3: Quad Explosive LMG (Event Farming)
Quad doubles magazine capacity from 75 to 150 rounds per mag. The Explosive 2-star adds 15% AOE radius splash on every hit. The combination creates a wide-area suppression setup ideal for killing groups of enemies during public events.
Best use case: Eviction Notice, Moonshine Jamboree, and other wave-defense events where you want to hit multiple enemies per trigger pull. The Large Magazine mod from Update 27 stacks with the Quad legendary multiplicatively — a Quad LMG with the Large Magazine mod holds 300 rounds before reloading.
The Red Terror: The Best LMG in the Game
The Red Terror is a unique named LMG added in the Skyline Valley update. It differs from the standard MG42 in three important ways:
- Furious legendary effect: +5% damage after each consecutive hit on the same target, stacking up to +45% at 9 hits. This makes the Red Terror the highest sustained-DPS LMG for single-target fights.
- 150-round magazine by default (+100% ammo capacity as a built-in special stat), compared to 75 on the standard LMG.
- Uses .308 rounds as its default ammo rather than 5.56. (.308 carries more damage per round.)
The Red Terror cannot be crafted and cannot be re-rolled with Legendary Modules. You get what the event drops. The base legendary effects (Furious + two others) are fixed.
How to get the Red Terror: It drops from Event: Dangerous Pastimes in the Skyline Valley region. There is no other acquisition method. Weight note: the Red Terror weighs 15.2 pounds versus 8.0 for a standard LMG — equip Bear Arms to bring it to a manageable carry weight.
New Mods From Update 27 (Infestations, June 2026)
Update 27 added several new craftable and learnable mods for the LMG. The most impactful for build play:
Calibrated Receiver — Boosts critical hit damage. Available by default (no plan required). Pairs well with the Four Leaf Clover crit loop.
Large Magazine — Increases ammo capacity. Learned from scrapping LMGs (Medium chance) or obtained as a loose mod from Cranberry Bog quest rewards. The single most useful new mod for Bullet Storm builds — more ammo per magazine means faster stack accumulation and fewer reload cycles breaking the chain.
Critical .308 Receiver / Critical .45 Receiver — Changes ammo type to .308 or .45 while also adding a critical damage bonus. Available by default. Use the Critical .308 Receiver if you prefer higher per-round damage at the cost of slightly rarer ammo. Use the standard 5.56 setup if you want unlimited ammo in Appalachia.
Bruising Stock — Secondary damage on hits. Learned from scrapping (Medium chance) or Savage Divide quest rewards. Lower priority than the receiver and magazine mods but a free upgrade if you have the plan.
Long Barrel — Superior range. Learned from scrapping (Medium chance) or Cranberry Bog quest rewards.
Ammo Guide: 5.56 vs .308 vs .45
| Ammo Type | Availability | Damage per Round | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.56 Round (default) | High — everywhere in Appalachia | Standard base | General play, event farming |
| .308 Round (mod) | Medium — higher-tier enemies | Higher | Bloodied or DPS-focused builds |
| .45 Round (mod) | Medium — common in Forest | Medium | Budget builds needing ammo flexibility |
| Ultracite 5.56 | Low — crafted with flux | Highest (ballistic) | Endgame content only |
For most players, stay on default 5.56 until you have a reliable ammo crafting loop. The Ammosmith (rank 2, +80%) and Ammo Factory (rank 4, +150%) perk stack multiplicatively for bulk production. For a full walkthrough of all ultracite ammo types including Ultracite 5.56, see the Ultracite Ammo Guide.
How to Get the Plan: MG42 Light Machine Gun
The LMG is not available at weapon vendors by default. Three ways to get the plan:
- Scrapping: Scrap any Light Machine Gun you find in the world — there is a chance to learn the Plan: MG42 light machine gun from scrapping.
- Camp Liberty: One pre-placed LMG spawns in the mess hall at Camp Liberty (Savage Divide). Loot it for a guaranteed weapon to scrap if you have not learned the plan.
- Player-to-player trading: The plan is tradeable. Other players sell it in vendor bots for caps or at Whitespring Resort.
Once learned, crafting the Level 50 LMG at a Weapons Workbench costs 19 Aluminum, 18 Gears, 16 Rubber, 16 Screws, 16 Springs, and 25 Steel.
Best Legendary Effects for the Standard LMG
| Priority | Slot | Effect | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1-star | Bloodied | +137% damage at low HP — highest ceiling |
| 1A | 1-star | Anti-Armor | 50% armor ignore — best for full-health PA builds |
| 1B | 1-star | Quad | +100% mag capacity (75→150) — best for Bullet Storm consistency |
| 2 | 2-star | Explosive | 15% AOE per hit — event crowd control |
| 2A | 2-star | Rapid | +15% reload speed — less reload = more sustained fire |
| 3 | 3-star | 15% reload speed | Standard third-slot fill |
With The Slasher's updated scrip economy (50 Scrip for 1-3-star rerolls at Purveyor Murmrgh), rerolling toward your preferred 1-star is more affordable than in any prior season. For the full breakdown of which 1-star effects win across all heavy guns, see the Best Legendary Effects guide.
FAQ
Does Down Ranger work with the Light Machine Gun? No. The LMG has a Rifle keyword in its game data, but Bethesda confirmed this keyword only counts for rifle-based challenges — it does not activate Down Ranger, Expert Down Ranger, or any Rifleman perk. Your perk loadout should have zero Rifle perks. Build entirely from the Strength Heavy gun tree.
Is the LMG a spin-up weapon like the Minigun? No. The LMG has a 0.25-second attack delay, which is the standard delay for automatic weapons. It fires immediately on trigger pull. The Slasher's Bullet Storm fix for "charging reload style weapons" applies to spin-up weapons like the Gauss Minigun and Plasma Caster, but not to the LMG.
What is the best ammo for the LMG? Default 5.56 rounds for general play — they are the most common ammo type in Appalachia and drop from almost every enemy. Switch to a Critical .308 Receiver if you want higher per-round damage and have a reliable .308 farming route. Ultracite 5.56 is the theoretical maximum for endgame content.
Is the Red Terror worth farming for? Yes, if you find it. The Red Terror's Furious effect is one of the best passive damage escalators in the game for single-target fights — +45% damage at full stacks. The fixed 150-round magazine removes the biggest downside of the standard LMG setup. The only downside is its fixed legendary roll (you cannot reroll it) and higher weight (15.2 vs 8.0 pounds).
Does the Large Magazine mod from Update 27 stack with the Quad legendary? Yes, they stack. A Quad LMG with the Large Magazine mod holds approximately 300 rounds per magazine before reloading (75 base x2 Quad x2 Large Magazine). This is the highest sustained-fire setup for the LMG outside of the Red Terror.
Where do I learn the Large Magazine mod? Scrap Light Machine Guns for a Medium chance to learn it, or loot it as a loose mod from Cranberry Bog quest rewards. Once learned, it can be applied at any Weapons Workbench. The plan is also tradeable between players.
