Helldivers 2 Beginner's Guide: 11 Tips New Players Need in 2026

The quick version (TL;DR)

New to Helldivers 2? Start on difficulty 3–4, spend your first Medals on the free Standard Warbond, learn to aim your Stratagems, and do not treat Super Credits as something you have to buy — you earn them for free in missions. Helldivers 2 looks chaotic, but almost every "I'm stuck" problem a new Helldiver hits comes down to five things: picking the wrong difficulty, ignoring Stratagems, buying the wrong Warbond, panicking under friendly fire, and misreading the currencies. This guide fixes all five, verified for the current live build, Devoid of Liberty: patch 7.1.1 (released 2026-09-24), with the level cap now at 300 and ten difficulty tiers in play.

Three numbers to anchor you before you drop:

  • There are exactly 10 difficulty levels — Helldive is 9, and Super Helldive (10) is the real ceiling.
  • The free Standard Warbond, Helldivers Mobilize!, holds 750 claimable Super Credits — roughly 75% of a premium Warbond's value, for nothing.
  • Every Premium Warbond quietly contains 300 Super Credits, so its true net cost is 700 SC, not the 1,000 on the sticker.

Helldivers 2 does a strange thing to new players: it hands you a rifle, drops you onto a planet, and then almost never explains its own systems. The in-game tutorial covers movement and the Stratagem menu and then stops. Everything that actually determines whether your first 20 hours are fun — which difficulty to farm, which Warbond to buy, how the four currencies differ, why your teammate just killed you — you are expected to figure out by dying.

This is the guide that skips the dying. It is written for the 2026 build of the game: the Illuminate are live, the Cyborgs have returned as an enemy faction, the level cap is 300, and the roster of Warbonds has grown to 23. Where a tip depends on the current patch, it is flagged — Arrowhead patches this game constantly, so always sanity-check balance claims against the latest notes. The one thing that never changes is that Helldivers 2 is a co-op PvE game, not a competitive one — there is no ranked ladder and no single "best" build. Everything below is about survival and progression, not winning a leaderboard.

1. Start on difficulty 3 or 4 — not 1, and definitely not 7

The most common new-player mistake is grinding difficulty 1 (Trivial) because it feels safe. It is safe, but it is also where the game teaches you nothing and rewards you almost nothing. The medal and sample payouts scale with difficulty, and the enemies that force you to actually learn — Chargers, Devastators, Overseers — only start appearing higher up.

Here is the full ladder, because new players constantly get the top end wrong:

#Difficulty#Difficulty
1Trivial6Extreme
2Easy7Suicide Mission
3Medium8Impossible
4Challenging9Helldive
5Hard10Super Helldive

Two facts to burn in: Helldive is difficulty 9, not the maximum, and Super Helldive (10) is the ceiling — there is no difficulty 11 or "Mega Helldive," no matter what a YouTube thumbnail tells you. Sample gating also matters for progression: Common Samples drop on every difficulty, Rare Samples first appear on Challenging (4), and Super Samples only drop on Extreme (6) and above. That alone is the argument for pushing to difficulty 4 as soon as you can survive it — it is the lowest tier that drips the Rare Samples your Ship Module upgrades need.

A clean progression path for a brand-new Helldiver: play difficulty 3 until you clear missions without a wipe, step up to 4 for the Rare Samples, and only climb past 6 once your Ship Modules are partly upgraded and you have a support weapon you trust.

2. Your Stratagems matter more than your gun

New players treat the primary weapon as the star and the Stratagem menu as an afterthought. It is the reverse. Your primary clears chaff; your Stratagems — orbital strikes, Eagle runs, sentries, and support weapons — are what kill the heavy units that end runs. Learning to dial in a Stratagem code while running and getting shot at is the single highest-value mechanical skill in the game.

Three habits that separate a new Helldiver from a competent one:

  • Always bring an anti-tank option. The Recoilless Rifle, EAT-17 (Expendable Anti-Tank), or Quasar Cannon answer Chargers, Hulks, and Bile Titans. Running four offensive Stratagems with no AT is why your squad can't kill the big thing.
  • Call support weapons in early. Support weapons like the Autocannon or Machine Gun come down as a Stratagem and have a cooldown — call yours at the start, not when you're already overwhelmed.
  • Learn two or three codes by muscle memory. You do not need all of them memorized. Pick your reinforce, your AT, and your favorite orbital, and drill those until you can input them without looking.

3. Drain the free Warbond before you buy anything

Warbonds are Helldivers 2's progression tracks. They are not battle passes — they never expire. You spend Medals to unlock items inside a Warbond you already own, at your own pace, forever. This is the defining difference from every live-service competitor, and it means there is zero fear-of-missing-out pressure to rush.

Before you spend a single real dollar or Super Credit, completely drain the free Standard Warbond, Helldivers Mobilize!. It holds roughly 60 items across 10 pages, including about 750 claimable Super Credits — around 75% of a premium Warbond's worth, handed to you for free. New players routinely buy a premium Warbond on day one and leave hundreds of free Super Credits sitting unclaimed in the starter track.

When you are ready for a premium Warbond, the community-consensus best first purchase is Democratic Detonation, and the economics back it up. It carries the GP-31 Grenade Pistol, the G-123 Thermite grenade, the BR-14 Adjudicator, the R-36 Eruptor, and the CB-9 Exploding Crossbow — the cheapest strong payoff of any track. If you only want one cheap standout weapon, the LAS-16 Sickle sits on page 1 of Cutting Edge for just 20 Medals.

4. Super Credits are free — stop treating them like a paywall

This is the currency misconception that instantly marks someone as new. Super Credits (SC) have a dual nature: you can buy them with real money, but you also find them for free, in-mission, at Points of Interest. You never have to spend cash. Every premium Warbond is fully earnable by farming.

The cleanest way to see the real cost of a Warbond:

  • A Premium Warbond costs 1,000 SC on the sticker but contains 300 claimable SC inside — so its true net cost is 700 SC.
  • A Legendary Warbond (like the Warhammer 40K Castellan's Creed track) costs 1,500 SC and contains no claimable Super Credits — its true cost is the full 1,500, more than double a premium's net. That is the single strongest reason not to make a Legendary your first big purchase.

To farm Super Credits efficiently: set difficulty to 1 (Trivial), pick a wide, open map, and sweep the Points of Interest — pods, cargo containers, and bunkers — where SC appear in stacks of 10 (rarely 100). Once the map's POIs are stripped, Abandon Mission from the menu — your Super Credits are already banked the moment you pick them up and are kept even if you never extract. Two cautions: bunkers need two players to open, and community reports of "400–600 SC per hour" are blog estimates, not measured figures — your mileage swings wildly with the map roll. And never touch third-party "free Super Credits" generators or sellers — they are a ban risk and, since SC are farmable, completely pointless.

5. Friendly fire is always on — plan around it

There is no friendly-fire toggle. Your bullets, your orbital strikes, your 500kg bomb, and your reinforcement Hellpods can all kill your teammates. New squads lose more divers to each other than to the enemy. The fixes are behavioral, not mechanical:

  • Call your Stratagems out loud or over text before you throw them — especially anything that explodes.
  • Watch your firing lane. Moving while shooting wrecks your accuracy; stop, crouch, or go prone when it matters, which both tightens your aim and keeps you out of a teammate's line.
  • Don't revive into an active firefight. A reinforcement Hellpod can crush the ally you're trying to save, and a freshly dropped diver with starting gear is a liability mid-fight. Clear the area first, then reinforce.

6. Pick armor by its passive, not its looks

Armor in Helldivers 2 comes in light, medium, and heavy classes that trade mobility for protection — but the number that actually changes your run is the passive perk, not the armor rating. Light armor plus a stamina or stealth passive plays completely differently from heavy armor with an explosive-resistance passive. For new players, a medium armor with the Extra Padding (higher effective armor) or a stamina passive is a forgiving default. Don't buy an armor set for the camo — buy it for what the passive does.

7. Understand the four currencies before you spend

Helldivers 2 runs on four separate progression currencies, and merging them is the fastest way to waste a grind. Here is the whole economy in one table:

CurrencyHow you get itWhat it buys
Super Credits (SC)Found in-mission and bought with cashWarbonds, Superstore items
Requisition Slips (R)Mission objectives, POIs, extractionStratagems, Ship Modules, weapon attachments
MedalsMissions, Orders, POI casesItems inside Warbonds you own
SamplesPicked up on the map — must be extractedShip Module upgrades

The two traps: Medals cap at 250 and overflow is discarded, so spend them rather than hoarding, and Samples are lost if you fail to extract — unlike Super Credits, which bank on pickup. Dying on the way to the Pelican with a backpack full of Super Samples is the most painful lesson in the game. Prioritize extraction when you're carrying samples.

8. Weapon customization is live — but don't overthink it

Since 2025, many weapons can be customized with optics, underbarrels, muzzles, and magazines, unlocked with Weapon Experience (earned by using the gun) and purchased with Requisition Slips. It's a real system worth engaging with, but a candid note from the community: it is not deep, and the player base is split on it. As one r/Helldivers thread put it this week, a lot of early weapons are "literally just the same gun slightly modified." Set your optic, pick an underbarrel that fits the faction you're fighting, and move on — attachments are a nudge, not a rebuild. Don't burn your early Requisition Slips chasing marginal attachment upgrades when those same Slips unlock Stratagems and Ship Modules that change your run far more.

9. Know your three (now four) enemy factions

Each faction demands different answers, and the names trip up every newcomer:

  • Terminids ("bugs") — swarms plus heavies like Chargers and the Bile Titan. Bring crowd control and anti-tank.
  • Automatons ("bots") — ranged pressure from Devastators, Hulks, and the Factory Strider. Cover and armor penetration win here.
  • Illuminate ("squids") — the Voteless, Overseers, and Harvesters, expanded in 2026 with the regenerating Crusher and the nimble Wretch. (It is the Illuminate, not "Illuminati.")
  • Cyborgs — returned in 2026 as a distinct enemy faction. They are not the Automatons; never use the terms interchangeably.

10. Upgrade your Ship Modules as soon as samples allow

Your Super Destroyer's Ship Modules are permanent upgrades that buff your Stratagems — faster cooldowns, more uses, bigger payloads — and they apply to your whole squad's experience of your ship. They cost Samples and Requisition Slips. New players sleep on them because the benefits are invisible until you have them. Prioritize the modules that upgrade the Stratagems you actually run; a fully upgraded Orbital or Eagle is a different weapon from its base version.

11. The grind is real — and that's the honest part

Here is the thing no tier list tells you: Helldivers 2's progression is paced to be slow. Reaching the level 300 cap is intended to take roughly twice as long as the old 150 cap, Ship Modules demand thousands of Samples across 30 modules, and draining even one Warbond takes hundreds of Medals against a 250-Medal cap you can't bank past. None of it is paywalled — you can earn every bit of it for free — but "free" and "fast" are not the same thing, and the sample-and-medal grind is the part that quietly eats the most hours.

If the leveling and sample grind is the wall between you and the loadout you actually want to play, a Helldivers 2 leveling and carry service can shortcut the parts that aren't fun — the repetitive farm runs — so you spend your time on the missions you enjoy. The in-game systems above remain the free, intended path; the service just buys back time on the grind.

FAQ

Do I need a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play Helldivers 2 on PC? No. Sony announced a mandatory PSN link in 2024, then reversed it within days after backlash, and it has been optional on PC ever since. Crossplay works with or without a linked account.

Is there cross-save or cross-progression between PC, PS5, and Xbox? No. There is no cross-save and no cross-progression on any platform pair — your PC, PS5, and Xbox saves are permanently separate. Full crossplay (playing together) works across all three, but your unlocks do not transfer.

What's the best Warbond to buy first in Helldivers 2? Drain the free Standard Warbond (Helldivers Mobilize!) first for its ~750 free Super Credits, then buy Democratic Detonation — it has the cheapest strong payoff of any premium track, including the Grenade Pistol, Thermite, and Eruptor. Avoid starting with a Legendary Warbond: it costs 1,500 SC and gives no Super Credits back.

Do I have to spend real money on Super Credits? No. Super Credits are fully earnable in-mission at Points of Interest and are kept even if you abandon the mission. Buying them is optional and only saves farming time — never use third-party generators or sellers, which are a ban risk.

What difficulty should a new Helldiver play? Start on difficulty 3 (Medium), then move to 4 (Challenging) as soon as you can survive it — difficulty 4 is the lowest tier that drops Rare Samples, which you need for Ship Module upgrades. Remember Helldive is difficulty 9 and Super Helldive (10) is the maximum.

Why do my teammates keep killing me? Friendly fire is always on and cannot be turned off — bullets, orbital strikes, bombs, and reinforcement Hellpods all damage allies. Call out your Stratagems before throwing them, mind your firing lane, and don't reinforce directly into a firefight.
