TL;DR — You get Kavat Genetic Codes by scanning live Feral Kavats with a Codex or Synthesis Scanner. Each scan has a 25% chance to drop a code. Feral Kavats only spawn on the Orokin Derelict tileset, which now lives on Deimos, and the most-recommended node is Horend (Capture). You need 10 codes to build the Kavat Incubator Upgrade Segment and 10 more for every Kavat you breed. The shortcuts: the one-time Sands of Inaros quest spawns around 50 Feral Kavats, or you can buy codes in the Market for 5 Platinum each. One trap: since Update 37, Smeeta's Charm no longer doubles loot. That moved to the Loyal Retriever mod. Current for Update 44.1 (Iceblade of Narin: The Icebind, Hotfix 44.1.2 + 2.1).
Kavat Genetic Codes are one of those resources that new players hit a wall on. You need them for a Smeeta or Adarza Kavat, and Khora's Chassis, Neuroptics and Systems blueprints need them too. Feral Kavats are invisible, they move around, and most scans give you nothing.
A post on r/Warframe this week asked DE to "please fix Kavat Genetic Codes", and the thread is mostly people swapping the same few tricks. This guide puts those tricks in order: where to scan, how to scan faster, what the Market shortcut costs, and what to do with your codes once you have them.
What is a Kavat Genetic Code and what do you need it for?
The in-game description is short: it "Contains the genetic code sequence of a Kavat." According to the WARFRAME Wiki's Kavat Genetic Code page, it's needed for:
| Item | Kavat Genetic Codes needed |
|---|---|
| Kavat Incubator Upgrade Segment (one-time, blueprint build) | 10 |
| Each Adarza, Smeeta or Vasca Kavat incubation | 10 |
| Khora Chassis | 5 |
| Khora Neuroptics | 2 |
| Khora Systems | 2 |
That's 20 codes for your first Kavat (10 for the segment, 10 for the breeding) and 9 codes if you're building Khora. Because of that, Kavat Genetic Code farming usually goes with the Khora farm. If you're working on both, plan for about 30 codes.
Where do Feral Kavats spawn in Warframe?
Feral Kavats only spawn on the Orokin Derelict tileset. On today's Star Chart those Derelict missions are on Deimos, so that's where you farm.
The wiki lists three Deimos nodes as reliable Feral Kavat spots: Horend, Phlegyas and Formido. The two that players actually farm are:
- Horend (Capture), Deimos. This is the node the wiki recommends most. It estimates that a solo run "takes 2-3 minutes total to scan 4 kavats", finish the capture and leave. Kavats aren't tied to fixed spawn points, but they "very often spawn near the mission target and along the extraction path."
- Terrorem (Survival), Deimos. Feral Kavats spawn alongside the Infested for roughly the first 10 minutes. If you wait at the start, a group spawns about every 2 minutes 30 seconds. Some players restart the mission when the starting room has no Kavats.
Feral Kavats always come in groups, and group size depends on your squad. The wiki puts it as "squad size +1": 2 Kavats per group solo, 3 with two players, 4 with three and 5 with a full squad. Several groups spawn per mission, so a squad that scans together will usually collect codes faster than a solo player. Treat the timings here as community guidance, not guarantees.
How do you scan Feral Kavats for Genetic Codes?
When you're using a scanner, only live Feral Kavats give codes. You can scan a corpse for Cephalon Simaris standing, but the wiki says "this will not award any codes." That catches out a lot of players who kill the group and then scan the bodies. The two exceptions, Dante's Noctua and the Heliocor, are covered below.
Here's the loop that works:
- Equip a Codex Scanner or Synthesis Scanner on your gear wheel. Buy a stack of Codex Scanners from the Market for Credits before you start.
- Look for the orange shimmer. Feral Kavats stay cloaked until they're attacked or alerted. Through the scanner they show up even when cloaked. After 20 total scans, the scanner shows them in green, which makes them much easier to pick out.
- Freeze them before you scan. A cloaked Kavat keeps moving, and the Infested will often kill it before you finish.
- Scan each live Kavat once. Every scan has a 25% chance to give one code. On average that's one code per four scans, before boosters.
Which Warframes make Kavat scanning faster?
You'll do better with crowd control that holds Kavats in place without killing them. Lower Ability Strength on damage abilities helps. The wiki recommends:
- Dante, Noctua: scans enemies on kill, so you don't need to keep the Kavats alive. It still works after your Codex entry is complete. Several r/Warframe players call this the easiest method.
- Ivara (Sleep Arrow), Baruuk (Lull), Equinox (Rest): put the group to sleep and mark them in your energy colour, which reveals cloaked Kavats.
- Limbo, Cataclysm + Stasis: freezes everything inside the rift.
- Harrow, Condemn: chains and immobilises the whole group.
- Sevagoth (Gloom) and Nova (Molecular Prime): slow the whole room. Be careful with Nova, because the explosions can chain-kill the Kavats.
Avoid abilities that ragdoll Kavats, like Khora's Strangledome, Nezha's Divine Spears, Vauban's Bastille or Titania's Spellbind. According to the wiki, scans "don't work as intended" on a ragdolled target.
Two gear tricks also help. The Synthesis Scanner's Cross-Matrix widget has a 45% chance to scan a Kavat twice, and both scans can give a code. The Heliocor hammer collects codes from Feral Kavats it kills, even after your Codex is complete.
How do you farm Kavat Genetic Codes fast?
The base 25% chance can be raised. These all apply to code scans:
| Multiplier | What it does | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Path | +100% resource drop chance, which applies to code scans | Run Horend on the Steel Path |
| Resource Drop Chance Booster | Raises the chance a scan gives a code | Market, daily login rewards |
| Resource Booster | Doubles the codes from each successful scan | Market, daily login rewards |
| Resourceful Retriever (beast mod) | 18% chance to double codes | Son in the Necralisk, for Conservation tags |
| Event / weekend boosters | Stack with your own boosters | Occasional DE events |
Our Steel Path guide covers the unlock if you don't have it yet. With the Steel Path modifier, Horend becomes much more efficient.
Is Sands of Inaros the best Kavat Genetic Code farm?
For a one-off haul, yes. In the second part of the Sands of Inaros quest, the wiki says "up to 50 Feral Kavats will spawn depending on the player group size", and you can scan all of them. Players on r/Warframe keep recommending it. One wrote that it "saves an insane amount of time vs the normal grind."
There are two catches:
- It isn't replayable. If you finished Sands of Inaros years ago, it's gone. Several players in this week's thread learned this the hard way.
- You have to unlock it first. It needs Mastery Rank 5 and the quest blueprint, which Baro Ki'Teer sells for 100 Orokin Ducats + 25,000 Credits (you can also trade for it). If you haven't done it, save it for when you need Kavat codes. Our Ducats guide covers saving up for Baro.
Can you buy Kavat Genetic Codes?
Yes, from the in-game Market. Codes cost 5 Platinum each, so the 10 needed for one incubation cost 50 Platinum. The Kavat Starter Kit costs 95 Platinum and contains 10 codes, an Incubator Power Core and a blank Genetic Code Template. That's only 5 Platinum less than buying the three separately. The kit doesn't include the Incubator Upgrade Segment.
If you'd rather not pay real money, Platinum you earn from player-to-player trades spends the same way. Our guide to making Platinum in Warframe shows how to do that inside the game. Stick to the in-game Trading Post. DE's support team says outside Platinum sellers "are not legitimate", and buying from them breaks the EULA.
How do you breed a Smeeta Kavat in Warframe?
Once you have the codes, here's the order:
- Finish the Howl of the Kubrow quest. It unlocks the Orbiter's Incubator.
- Get the Kavat Incubator Upgrade Segment. The blueprint comes from your Clan Dojo's Tenno Lab or drops from Hyekka Masters. The wiki names Spear, Mars as a good farm, usually within 10 to 20 waves. According to the wiki's Orbiter Segments page, building it needs Mastery Rank 5, 100,000 Credits, 1 Argon Crystal, 10 Kavat Genetic Codes and 60,000 Alloy Plate, and takes 12 hours. You can also buy it built for 175 Platinum.
- Build an Incubator Power Core. The reusable blueprint is in the Market for Credits. Each core costs 100,000 Credits, 4,500 Nano Spores, 2 Control Modules and 1 Argon Crystal, and one is used up per pet. Argon Crystals decay daily, so check our Argon Crystal guide before you farm.
- Get a free Companion slot. Each Kavat takes one permanently.
- Incubate with 10 Kavat Genetic Codes. It takes 48 hours, or 24 hours with the Nutrio Incubator Upgrade Segment. You can rush it for 15 Platinum.
Random incubation or Genetic Code Templates?
A random incubation gives you an Adarza or a Smeeta with no guarantee of breed, colour or pattern. If you specifically want a Smeeta, use two Genetic Code Templates (imprints) taken from Smeeta Kavats. The wiki's Genetic Code Template page says each trait an imprint stores, including breed, carries "a 50%-per-template weighting", so two Smeeta parents is the reliable way to get a Smeeta. Colours, pattern, head and tail still mix between the two parents, so don't expect an exact copy. The incubation itself still uses the normal 10 codes and one Power Core on top of the two imprints.
Templates are where the Kavat economy is. The blueprint costs 50,000 Credits and can be reused, or a built template is 15 Platinum. A matured Kavat can give up to three imprints, and imprints can be traded between players through the normal in-game Trading Post. You can buy a Smeeta imprint with a pattern you like from another player, or sell your own Kavat's spare imprints for Platinum. For trade limits and tax, see our trading guide.
Vasca Kavats work differently. Take your own Kavat to the Plains of Eidolon at night and let a wild Vasca infect it. Then use a Genetic Code Template on it in the Incubator to get a Vasca imprint. Two Vasca imprints guarantee a Vasca Kavat, and it still needs 10 codes and a Power Core. Scanning Vasca Kavats doesn't give codes.
Is Smeeta Kavat still worth it for farming in 2026?
This is the question most guides still get wrong. For years, Smeeta's Charm was the "loot pet" because it could double your resource pickups. DE removed that in Update 37 (Koumei & the Five Fates, October 2024) as part of the Companion Rework. The official patch notes say:
"The resource pickup multiplier has been removed from Charm and promoted to being its own separate precept Mod (Loyal Retriever), equippable on all Beasts."
Here's what Charm does now, per the wiki's Charm page: every 27 seconds at max rank there's a 40% chance of a buff. The possible buffs are Reinforced Shields (25%), Instant Reload (25%), Energy Refund, which makes abilities free for 10 seconds (20%), a buff that raises your critical chance to 200% if it's lower (10%), triple Affinity (10%), or one rare resource from the current area (10%), such as an Argon Crystal in the Void. The loot doubling is now Loyal Retriever, a 13% chance to double each resource or Credit pickup. Any beast companion can use it, not just a Smeeta. DE set 13% as "the statistical average of what amount of time Charm's resource bonus would be active." If you need a copy, Master Teasonai in Cetus sells it for Conservation tags.
So is a Smeeta still worth breeding? Yes, but not for its old reputation. The Energy Refund and the 200% crit floor are good for burst damage, and triple Affinity helps when you're levelling gear. If all you want is more loot, the Resourceful Retriever (18% resource doubling) or Prosperous Retriever (18% Credit doubling) mods on any beast, Kavat or not, do that job better. Neither works on Khora's Venari.
What do players get wrong about Kavat codes?
From this week's r/Warframe thread and the wiki, these are the mistakes we see most:
- Scanning dead Kavats. Corpses give Simaris standing but no codes. Scan them alive, or use Dante's Noctua or the Heliocor.
- Farming on the Plains. Wild Vasca Kavats don't give codes. One player asked why "you couldn't get them from plains night cycle packs", and the answer is that the game doesn't allow it.
- Hoping for codes from Hyekkas. Codes only come from Feral Kavat scans, and the Grineer Hyekka Master's cats are Hyekkas, a separate Grineer-bred enemy. Hyekka Masters do drop the Incubator Segment blueprint, though.
- Rushing through Sands of Inaros. It's your single best code farm, and it only happens once.
- Breeding a Smeeta for loot. Since Update 37, loot doubling comes from the Retriever mods, not Charm.
FAQ
How do you get Kavat Genetic Codes in Warframe? Scan live Feral Kavats with a Codex or Synthesis Scanner on the Orokin Derelict tileset on Deimos. Each scan has a 25% chance to give one code. Horend (Capture) is the most-recommended node. You can also buy codes in the Market for 5 Platinum each.
Where is the best place to farm Kavat Genetic Codes? Horend (Capture) on Deimos is the most-recommended node. The wiki estimates about 2 to 3 minutes for 4 Kavats solo, and a full squad sees 5 per group. Run it on the Steel Path for +100% resource drop chance. If you haven't played it, the one-time Sands of Inaros quest spawns around 50 Kavats you can scan.
How many Kavat Genetic Codes do you need? Ten for the Kavat Incubator Upgrade Segment, ten for every Kavat you incubate, and nine more if you're building Khora (5 Chassis, 2 Neuroptics, 2 Systems).
Do Resource Boosters work on Kavat Genetic Codes? Yes. Resource Boosters, Resource Drop Chance Boosters, the Steel Path's +100% modifier and the Resourceful Retriever mod all raise the codes you get from scans.
Can you trade Kavat Genetic Codes? Not the codes themselves. Genetic Code Templates (imprints) can be traded between players through the in-game Trading Post, so you can buy or sell Smeeta imprints for Platinum.
Does Smeeta Kavat still double resources? No. Since Update 37 (October 2024), Charm no longer doubles loot. That effect became the Loyal Retriever mod (13% chance to double pickups), which any beast companion can use. Charm now gives combat buffs, triple Affinity or an occasional rare resource.
