TL;DR — A Warframe Legendary Core instantly maxes any single mod with zero Endo and zero Credits. On a rank-0 Primed, Umbra or Archon mod that saves 40,920 Endo and about 1.98 million Credits. Normally it's one of the rarest drops in the game (0.19% from the daily Sortie on DE's own drop table), but right now you can buy one for 500 Moonflesh from Praghasa during Epoch Operation: Taubound, which ends November 17, 2026 and won't return. Grab it, use it on your most expensive unranked Primed mod, or trade it in-game. Current for Update 44.1 (Iceblade of Narin: The Icebind), Hotfix 44.1.2 + 2.1.
The Legendary Core has always been the item most Tenno hoard and never use, because getting another one used to mean years of Sorties. Taubound changed that. DE's official Taubound announcement lists "a valuable Legendary Core" among Praghasa's wares, and r/Warframe has spent the week arguing about what one is actually worth. This guide covers every way to get one, the exact maths on what it saves you, the best mods to use it on, and how to trade it safely.
What is a Legendary Core in Warframe?
A Legendary Core (older guides call it a Legendary Fusion Core) is a consumable fusion item. It can't be equipped. You spend it in the Fusion screen to push one mod straight to max rank. DE's in-game description says it plainly:
"Consumed in the fusion process to power up existing Mods. A single Legendary Core will instantly fuse a Mod to its maximum capacity without credit cost."
According to the WARFRAME Wiki's Legendary Core page, it skips both costs of fusion: no Endo and no Credits. That's what makes it valuable. Endo is the slow part of modding, and Credits are the part new players run out of.
It doesn't sit in your normal mod inventory, which confuses a lot of players. It's stored as a fusion resource, so you won't find it by scrolling your mod collection.
How do you get a Legendary Core in 2026?
There are six sources right now. Only two are guaranteed, and one of those is temporary.
| Source | Chance / cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Epoch Operation: Taubound (Praghasa, Eris) | 500 Moonflesh, limit 1 | One-time event, Oct 15 to Nov 17, 2026 |
| Legendary Rank test | 1 per Legendary Rank | Each rank-up above MR30 awards one; LR6 is the highest |
| Sortie (daily, 3rd mission) | 0.19% | DE's official drop table, last updated Oct 7, 2026 |
| Archon Hunt (weekly) | ~0.18% | Per the wiki's Legendary Core page; DE's table lists the core under Sorties |
| Void Surplus (Baro Ki'Teer) | 0.5% | 50,000 Credits, one per Baro visit |
| Trading | Player price | Receiver pays a 1,000,000 Credit trade tax |
DE also hands out Legendary Cores now and then as one-off rewards, but you can't plan around that.
Put those odds in perspective. At 0.19%, you'd expect roughly one core per 526 Sorties, which is about a year and a half of doing every single daily Sortie. Baro's Void Surplus is better per roll, but he only visits every two weeks. That's why the Taubound offer matters: it's the only guaranteed core that doesn't need a Legendary Rank test or a trade, and it's gone in under a month.
How do you get the Legendary Core from Taubound?
Epoch Operation: Taubound runs from October 15 to November 17, 2026. DE calls it a "one-time event" and says, in its own words, "There will be no reruns of Epoch Operation: Taubound." You need to have finished Vor's Prize to take part. DE lifts the normal Star Chart and Junction requirements so everyone can reach Eris.
You earn Moonflesh two main ways, per the WARFRAME Wiki's Moonflesh page:
- Kill Infested on Eris. Each kill has a 2% chance to drop 2 Moonflesh (3 on Steel Path). Maggots don't count. The drop is shared with the whole squad.
- Complete Operation Alerts on Eris. Each Alert pays 50 Moonflesh (75 on Steel Path). New Alerts appear every 30 minutes and last 90 minutes, and you can clear each one once.
DE's announcement adds that completing missions on Eris also gives fixed amounts. The wiki is clear that Resource Boosters, Resourceful Retriever and looting abilities like Desecrate don't help with drops, so outside of Alerts your Moonflesh comes down to kill speed. The community's favourite farm is Zabala, the Dark Sector Survival on Eris. On Steel Path, the wiki puts a squad killing 100 to 150 enemies a minute at about 6 to 9 Moonflesh per minute. On normal difficulty, the same kill rate works out to roughly 4 to 6. Steel Path Alerts are the fastest route: the core alone is seven Steel Path Alerts (7 × 75 = 525).
Then visit Praghasa in the special Relay on Eris and trade 500 Moonflesh for the core. The purchase limit is one per account.
Is the Legendary Core worth 500 Moonflesh?
Yes. Compared with Praghasa's Endo and Credit offers, it's by far the best value per Moonflesh. Here's the maths, using the shop's own exchange rates listed on the Taubound wiki page:
| Shop offer | Moonflesh | Limit | Moonflesh value per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 Endo | 1 | x300 | 100 Endo per Moonflesh |
| 10,000 Credits | 3 | x100 | ~3,333 Credits per Moonflesh |
| Legendary Core | 500 | x1 | Up to 40,920 Endo + ~1.98M Credits |
| Tauforged Archon Shard (each color) | 375 | x1 each | 1.5× stats of a normal shard |
Used on a rank-0 Primed mod, the core is worth about 409 Moonflesh of Endo plus about 593 Moonflesh of Credits at the shop's own rates. That's roughly 1,000 Moonflesh of value for 500, and the shop caps how much Endo and Credits you can buy anyway. The core lets you skip both caps in one go.
Our call: if you only have time for one big purchase, buy the core first. A Tauforged Archon Shard is the better pick only if you already have a stockpile of maxed Primed mods and want permanent frame stats. You can also read our guide on how to get Archon Shards for the weekly routes.
What should you use a Legendary Core on?
Use it on the mod that costs the most to max. That's always a rank-0 Legendary-rarity mod with 10 ranks: Primed, Umbra and Archon mods. The WARFRAME Wiki's Fusion page lists the full cost to max from rank 0:
| Mod rarity (max rank 10) | Endo to max | Credits to max | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary (Primed / Umbra / Archon) | 40,920 | 1,976,436 | Primed Continuity, Umbral Fiber, Archon Intensify |
| Rare / Galvanized / Amalgam | 30,690 | 1,482,327 | Blind Rage, Galvanized Scope, Amalgam Serration |
| Uncommon | 20,460 | 988,218 | Hornet Strike |
| Common | 10,230 | 494,109 | Common 10-rank mods |
Using a core on a Legendary mod saves 33% more Endo than using it on a Rare one. On a Common mod you'd waste three quarters of its value.
Best targets, in order:
- An unranked Primed mod you'll use on many builds, like Primed Continuity, Primed Flow or Primed Pressure Point.
- An Umbra or Archon mod you're building toward, such as Umbral Fiber or Archon Intensify.
- A 10-rank Galvanized or Rare mod if you have no Primed mods yet.
Don't use it on:
- A mod that's already partly ranked. The core only covers the ranks left, so it saves far less than on a rank-0 mod.
- Short-rank mods. A 5-rank or 3-rank mod costs a fraction of a 10-rank one.
- Anything you might not keep. The core is gone the moment you confirm.
One r/Warframe player in a thread about the Taubound cores wrote: "Already used mine on a prime cleanse infected mod." That's Primed Cleanse Infested, a Legendary 10-rank mod, so it got full value. Whether a faction-damage mod is the one you want maxed is another question.
How do you use a Legendary Core?
- Open your Mods screen in the Orbiter (Esc > Equipment > Mods).
- Select an unranked mod and choose to fuse it.
- Click Start Fusing Into Selected Mod.
- Your core count shows in the top-right corner, above the Legendary Core label. Select it and confirm.
Since Hotfix 37.0.1, the confirmation popup makes it much clearer that you're about to spend a Legendary Core, and 37.0.2 removed the controller shortcut that used to spend one by accident. On controller you now have to move the cursor over the button on purpose.
How to check how many Legendary Cores you have: follow steps 1 to 3 on any mod below max rank, then read the number in the top-right corner. Cancel if you don't want to use one. The only other place they show up is the Mods section of a trade window.
Should you use your Legendary Core or trade it?
It depends on how short you are on Credits. Here's what most players miss: the 1,000,000 Credit trade tax is paid by the player receiving the core. That cuts its real value to a buyer. As one player pointed out in this week's r/Warframe Legendary Core cost analysis thread:
"It costs 1M to trade the core so it saves 976K not 1.976M"
So for a buyer, a traded core saves 40,920 Endo and about 976,000 Credits once the base tax is paid, and less after hub tax (roughly 876,000 at Maroo's Bazaar). For you, a core you got from Taubound saves the full ~1.98 million, because there's no tax on using your own.
Use it if you're a newer or mid-game player. Credits are tight, you still have dozens of mods to rank, and every Primed mod you max opens new builds.
Trade it if you're a veteran with Endo and Credits to spare and you'd rather have Platinum for slots or a specific Prime. Check current prices on warframe.market, the community price reference most Tenno use (it isn't run by DE), and only ever complete the trade in-game. Prices move a lot, and Taubound puts a core within reach of every active player, so don't trust last month's price.
How do you trade a Legendary Core safely?
Trading uses the normal rules from our complete Warframe trading guide:
- You need Mastery Rank 2 and two-factor authentication turned on.
- Trade at a Clan Dojo Trading Post or Maroo's Bazaar on Mars.
- The core is in the Mods section of the trade window.
- The receiver pays 1,000,000 Credits tax, plus the hub tax (Maroo's Bazaar adds a flat 10%).
- DE doesn't reverse trades, so check the window before you confirm.
Can you buy a Legendary Core with Platinum?
Not directly from DE. There's no Legendary Core in the in-game Market. The only legitimate way to pay Platinum for one is a player-to-player trade in-game.
Never buy one from an outside website. DE's support team says "these Platinum sellers are not legitimate," and DE's EULA bans "secondary markets" for virtual goods. A sketchy third-party deal can get your account actioned, and DE won't recover a scammed item.
What's the fastest way to save Endo if you don't have a core?
A core is one mod's worth of savings. For the rest of your mods you still need Endo. The fastest steady sources are Arbitrations, Ayatan Sculptures (a filled Anasa Sculpture gives 3,450 Endo) and Steel Path. During Taubound, the shop's 100 Endo for 1 Moonflesh offer (up to 30,000 Endo) is also a solid way to spend leftover Moonflesh once you've bought the core. Our Endo farming guide covers the best nodes in detail. And if you're chasing Legendary Ranks for the free cores, our Mastery Rank leveling guide shows the quickest way to MR30.
