Last Epoch Radiant Lance Paladin Build – Season 5 (Patch 1.5)

Radiant Lance arrived in Season 5 (Patch 1.5) as the Paladin's final skill, and after four days of community testing it has cemented itself as one of the most distinctive new builds in Rage of the Frostborn. It is not a one-button spam skill — mana management is a genuine puzzle — but once the pieces click together it fires holy beams across the screen from invulnerable reliquaries while you run Smite for fuel.

This guide covers the confirmed skill nodes, the two main scaling paths, how to solve mana, and what gear to acquire to push deep into Corruption in Season 5 on Patch 1.5.

Quick answer: The meta Radiant Lance build takes Golden Reliquary (auto-casts beams every 2 seconds from an invulnerable relic) + Cloudless Sky (removes shield requirement, scales damage with Max Mana) + Sunbeam (Fire conversion) and sustains mana by pairing Smite with the Time and Faith Paladin passive. Core unique: Spirit Xylem staff. Stat priority: Attunement → Max Mana → Fire Resistance.

This guide applies to Season 5 / Patch 1.5. Season 4 content is no longer live.

How Does Radiant Lance Work?

Radiant Lance calls down holy light into your shield and blasts it forward as a beam. In its default form it deals 1% more damage per 1% of uncapped Block Chance — meaning stacking Block past the 100% cap continues to scale damage, unlike most defensive stats.

The skill requires 15 Paladin passive tree points to unlock and is exclusive to the Paladin mastery of the Sentinel class. Void Knight and Forge Guard can also access it via cross-mastery skill slotting after spending the required Paladin points.

Three core nodes reshape the skill completely:

  • Golden Reliquary — Instead of direct casting, you place an invulnerable Reliquary that auto-fires Radiant Lance. Each Reliquary lasts 6 seconds and fires at a base rate of once every 2 seconds (55% reduced cast speed). The maximum number of simultaneous Reliquaries scales with Attunement: you need 140+ Attunement for 3 Reliquaries active at once.
  • Cloudless Sky — Removes the shield requirement entirely. The Block Chance damage scaling is replaced by Max Mana scaling. This enables two-handed weapons (including staves) and opens the Spirit Xylem build path.
  • Sunbeam — Converts Radiant Lance to Fire damage. Activates Conduit of Light, which makes your Fire Resistance directly scale damage output. Stacking Fire Resistance becomes a damage stat, not just defense.

EHG developer Mike Weicker described the design intent in the Season 5 Hype Week post: "We wanted to give Paladins another aggressive option because they had limited choices when it came to offensive spells." The result is a skill that rewards players who invest in understanding its loops rather than those who mash the hotkey and move on.

The Two Main Build Paths

Path A: Spirit Xylem (Cloudless Sky + Golden Reliquary)

This is the dominant Season 5 path recommended by Maxroll and confirmed by the post-launch community.

You equip Spirit Xylem, a Unique Crystal Staff that converts Attunement directly into Health and Mana. With Cloudless Sky active, every point of Mana you accumulate adds to your Radiant Lance damage. With Golden Reliquary, you place Reliquaries that auto-fire while you use Smite to regenerate the Mana they consume.

The loop is:

  • Place a Reliquary. It fires every 2 seconds, draining your Mana pool.
  • Spam Smite alongside it — Smite generates Mana via the Time and Faith Paladin passive node.
  • During boss fights, drain your Mana pool as low as possible for Devotion damage buffs.
  • Refill with Smite, repeat.

This path is more gear-dependent than the alternative but it is the strongest in endgame and the one to aim for from Season 5 Day 1 with the Merchant's Guild rank gates removed.

Path B: Shield Block Chance (Classic Paladin)

The original scaling path keeps a shield equipped and stacks Block Chance past 100% for the raw 1%-per-1% damage multiplier. This path does not require Spirit Xylem and works with a wider variety of gear, making it more accessible early in the season before the chase uniques are affordable.

The downside is that it scales harder into specific defensive uniques (shields with high Block Chance) and does not benefit from the Attunement-to-Mana conversion of Spirit Xylem. Most endgame pushing happens on Path A.

A third variant — Lightning/Electrify crit using Urzil's Pride chestpiece (which grants 1% Mana Regen per 2% Lightning Resistance) and Radiant Lance's Electrify chance node — is viable and interesting but is an advanced min-max path. It is not covered in depth here.

How to Answer Mana: The Real Challenge

The most consistent community feedback after four days of Season 5 is that Radiant Lance's mana cost is its biggest constraint. As one player on the main subreddit put it: "Your biggest constraint for quite a while is going to be mana. You will likely have to rely on another skill to generate some mana for you like Smite."

Radiant Lance is expensive to cast directly. Golden Reliquary offloads the casting to the Reliquary, but the Reliquary still consumes your Mana. Here is how the primary build manages it:

Time and Faith (Paladin passive): Makes Smite generate Mana on use. This is non-negotiable. Without it, Radiant Lance depletes your Mana in seconds.

Spirit Xylem staff + Attunement stacking: More Attunement → more Mana pool (via Spirit Xylem's conversion). A deeper Mana pool means more Cloudless Sky damage AND a larger buffer before you drain.

Eternal Font (new Season 5 amulet unique): Generates one Mana Potion every second. It is a strong alternative amulet for sustaining mana before Spirit Xylem is available or if you need more flexibility in the amulet slot during leveling.

Orian's Descent + mana-on-potion experimental affix: A supplementary layer seen in the community "mana shotgun" variants that uses potions as a second mana source.

For the early season, lean on Smite + Time and Faith. Once Spirit Xylem is secured from the Merchant's Guild Bazaar, the problem largely solves itself through the Attunement-to-Mana conversion.

Recommended Skill Setup

SkillRole
Radiant LanceCore damage source (via Reliquaries)
SmiteMana regeneration via Time and Faith; secondary damage
Healing HandsMovement skill via Rahyeh's Chariot node
Holy AuraPermanent buff; activate and leave on
Symbols of HopePassive buff aura; slot and do not manually activate

The rotation is simple: drop a Reliquary, spam Smite, move with Healing Hands when needed. For bossing, drop the maximum number of Reliquaries you can sustain (3 at 140+ Attunement), keep Smite going, and stay mobile.

How to Level Into Radiant Lance

Radiant Lance unlocks at 15 Paladin passive points. You reach this around the mid-Campaign — roughly Chapters 5–6 depending on your pace and whether you take the Temporal Sanctum shortcut to Chapter 9.

Before reaching 15 Paladin points:

  • Start as Sentinel and commit to Paladin mastery as soon as the mastery selection screen appears.
  • Use Rive as your primary offensive skill through the early Campaign.
  • Transition to Javelin once you have 5 points in Heaven's Bulwark for mana management.
  • Add Radiant Lance to your bar when you hit 15 Paladin points. Run it alongside Smite and build out the skill tree over the next few Chapters.

The Temporal Sanctum shortcut (requires a key, available from the new Chapter 2 dungeon key cache added in Patch 1.5) teleports you to Chapter 9 — The Radiant Dunes — and saves multiple hours of Campaign time. If you have the key, take it; if not, the Campaign is not long enough to be a blocker.

Stat Priorities

For the Cloudless Sky + Spirit Xylem (main) build:

  • Attunement — Converts to Health and Mana via Spirit Xylem; increases max Reliquaries at 140+.
  • Max Mana — Directly scales Radiant Lance damage via Cloudless Sky; also buffers the mana loop.
  • Fire Resistance (above cap) — Scales damage output via Conduit of Light. Stack it like an offensive stat.
  • Critical Strike Damage Reduction — Reach 100% via Heaven's Bulwark (Paladin passive) + Fiery Dragon Shoes unique. This is the defensive priority once offensive stats are addressed.
  • Health — Supplementary via Spirit Xylem Attunement conversion; do not sacrifice Attunement for flat Health.

Core Gear

Spirit Xylem (Unique Crystal Staff) — The core item. Converts Attunement to Health and Mana. Combined with Cloudless Sky, stacking Attunement directly increases Radiant Lance damage. Not optional for the main build path. Buyable from the Merchant's Guild Bazaar from Season 5 Day 1 (rank gates removed in Patch 1.5 — see Season 5 Faction Reworks).

Devotion — Mana synergy unique that pairs with the Mana-heavy build path. Enhances damage output in ways that reward managing the mana loop described above. Prioritise Spirit Xylem first; pick up Devotion from the Bazaar once available.

Hand of Judgement (gloves, early/mid-game) — Grants Fire Penetration and Attunement with multiple Legendary Potential. Easy to acquire, provides two offensive stats, and offers an LP upgrade path. Use until Gift of the Eidolon (new Season 5 unique) is available.

Gift of the Eidolon (new S5 gloves) — Haste and Frenzy buffs. The upgrade slot for Hand of Judgement in the endgame.

Twisted Heart of Uhkeiros (unique chest) — Provides valuable defensive stats and generates substantial Ward when you spam Smite. Good defensive floor for the Smite-heavy rotation.

Fiery Dragon Shoes — High Movement Speed + Reduced Bonus Damage from Critical Hits. Combine with Heaven's Bulwark (Paladin passive) to reach 100% reduced crit bonus damage taken.

To get gear quickly: use the Last Epoch Gold service for Bazaar buying power on Day 1, and the Last Epoch Merchant's Guild boost for fast Favor accumulation if you want Bazaar access before farming it naturally.

Is Radiant Lance Worth Playing in Season 5?

After four days of live data, yes. The build is not "turn-brain-off" AoE like some meta options, but the Reliquary rotation is satisfying once mana is stable, and the skill's design gives it multiple distinct specialisations (Void Knight cross-mastery via Abyssal Heresy, ailment DoT via Scathing Light, Lightning/Electrify via Urzil's Pride) that are still being explored.

Maxroll rates it as having "Great AoE, Attunement Stacking, Solid Damage and Tankiness" with the tradeoffs of gear dependency and mana management. The community consensus after launch is that it is strong but demanding — which is exactly what you want from a seasonal skill that is not immediately figured out.

The main caution: do not rush to 140+ Attunement before your defensive layer is in place. Corruption pushes require 100% critical damage reduction (Heaven's Bulwark + Fiery Dragon Shoes) and reliable mana sustain before the build performs at its ceiling.

FAQ

What is the best Radiant Lance build in Season 5? The dominant community path uses Cloudless Sky (Max Mana scaling, no shield) + Golden Reliquary (auto-casting Reliquaries) + Spirit Xylem staff + Sunbeam (Fire conversion). Stack Attunement for more Mana and more simultaneous Reliquaries. Use Smite with the Time and Faith Paladin passive for mana regeneration.

Do I need a shield for Radiant Lance? No. The Cloudless Sky node removes the shield requirement. In exchange, block chance scaling is replaced by Max Mana scaling. This opens the Spirit Xylem staff path and is the preferred option for the main Season 5 build. The original block chance scaling path still works but is stronger in dedicated shield-stacking builds.

How many Reliquaries can I have at once? The Golden Reliquary node starts with a maximum of 1 Reliquary. The cap scales with Attunement — you need 140+ Attunement for 3 Reliquaries active simultaneously. Each Reliquary fires every 2 seconds and lasts 6 seconds, so you re-cast Radiant Lance every 6 seconds to maintain stacks.

How do I manage mana with Radiant Lance? The mana loop relies on Smite + the Time and Faith Paladin passive, which generates Mana on Smite casts. Stack Attunement (Spirit Xylem converts it to Mana), widen your Mana pool, and let Smite refuel it. Eternal Font (new Season 5 unique amulet) is an alternative mana source for early progression before Spirit Xylem is available.

Can Void Knight use Radiant Lance? Yes. Void Knight and Forge Guard can access Radiant Lance by cross-mastery skill slotting after spending 15 Paladin points. The Abyssal Heresy node in the Radiant Lance tree converts it to Void damage and changes Electrify chance to Time Rot, Void Knight's signature ailment. This opens a dedicated Void Knight Radiant Lance path separate from the Fire/Paladin line.

What should I craft for Radiant Lance gear? Prioritise Attunement on suffix affixes, Fire Resistance on chest/helm (scales damage via Conduit of Light + Sunbeam), and Mana on rings and amulets. See the Last Epoch Crafting Guide for Forging Potential management and Glyph of Hope habits.
