Updated October 30, 2026 · applies to Season 88 (Shocktober), the October 6 balance patch and the October 19 balance update. Supercell says it won't introduce balance changes at the start of the November season (Season 89 starts November 2), so these lists should hold into November.
Quick answer: The best Lava Hound deck right now is LavaLoon: Lava Hound, Hero Balloon, Hero Mega Minion, Evo Zap, Barbarians, Skeleton Dragons, Tombstone and Fireball, at 4.1 average Elixir. RoyaleTracker's Lava Hound page lists it at 65.7% over 166 battles. If you want a cheaper build, the 3.6 Lava Miner deck (Miner, Flying Machine, Goblin Curse, Evo Barbarians) posts 69.0% over 313 battles, the biggest sample among its top five. Lava Hound got a real buff on October 6 (damage 53 → 71), and it unlocks at Arena 13 (Rascal's Hideout, 4,200 trophies).
Lava Hound spent most of 2026 as a "fun but bad" card. Then the October 6 balance patch went after the tower-takers that weren't Hog Rider. Supercell's own line: "We're buffing weaker conditions to put them on par with the best tower-takers in the game." (official October balance changes). Lava Hound got the largest per-hit damage increase in that group (+33%).
Players have noticed the shift too. One r/ClashRoyale thread this week summed up the ladder mood: "Now gameplay is like, every win condition is vs'ing Hog Rider." Lava is one of the few win conditions that doesn't play the Hog game at all. It attacks from the air, so the ground answers that stop Hog do nothing.
This guide covers the three Lava decks worth playing, which Evolution and Hero slots to fill, what the October patches actually changed, how to play a Lava push, and how to beat Lava from the other side.
What is a Lava Hound deck in Clash Royale?
A Lava Hound deck is an air beatdown deck. You send a 7-Elixir flying tank toward a tower and stack air damage behind it. Most decks carry one or two cards that hit air, so a big air push overloads them.
The tank itself does very little damage. The value comes from two places: the support troops it shields, and the six Lava Pups it bursts into when it dies. Here are the numbers at tournament standard (Level 11), from the Clash Royale wiki's card page with the official October 6 damage change applied:
| Unit | Hitpoints | Damage | Hit speed | Targets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lava Hound | 3,581 | 71 | 1.5s | Buildings only |
| Lava Pup (x6) | 217 each | 81 each | 1.7s | Air and ground |
Two things matter in that table. First, the Hound has huge HP for an air unit, so it soaks Crown Tower shots while your Balloon or Miner does the real damage. Second, the Pups target anything. If they survive at the tower, six pups deal 486 damage per volley. That's why you'll see Lava players lose a full push and still take a tower.
Lava Hound is a Legendary and unlocks at Arena 13, Rascal's Hideout (4,200 trophies). If you're still in the Arena 13 climb, you'll get it there.
What is the best Lava Hound deck right now (October 2026)?
We checked RoyaleTracker's Lava Hound page on October 30, 2026. It tracks 30 Lava decks. Its samples are small (roughly 100 to 400 battles per deck), so treat the win rates as a direction, not a guarantee. Here are the three builds we'd actually play.
1. LavaLoon with Hero Balloon (the classic)
| Slot | Card | Elixir |
|---|---|---|
| Win condition | Lava Hound | 7 |
| Win condition (Hero) | Hero Balloon | 5 |
| Wild slot (Hero) | Hero Mega Minion | 3 |
| Evolution | Evo Zap | 2 |
| Defense | Barbarians | 5 |
| Air support | Skeleton Dragons | 4 |
| Building | Tombstone | 3 |
| Spell | Fireball | 4 |
Average Elixir: 4.1 · RoyaleTracker: 65.7% win rate over 166 battles.
This is the build most people mean when they search "LavaLoon". Lava Hound tanks, Balloon hits the tower for 640 damage per hit, and Skeleton Dragons and Hero Mega Minion clean up whatever the enemy places to defend. Barbarians and Tombstone handle ground pushes, which is the job a Lava deck struggles with most.
2. Lava Miner (the cheaper build)
| Slot | Card | Elixir |
|---|---|---|
| Win condition | Lava Hound | 7 |
| Chip | Miner | 3 |
| Hero | Hero Mega Minion | 3 |
| Evolution | Evo Barbarians | 5 |
| Wild slot (Evolution) | Evo Zap | 2 |
| Air support | Flying Machine | 4 |
| Building | Tombstone | 3 |
| Spell | Goblin Curse | 2 |
Average Elixir: 3.6 · RoyaleTracker: 69.0% over 313 battles, the largest sample of any deck in its top five.
Lava Miner swaps Balloon for a 3-Elixir Miner. You lose burst damage, but you gain a deck that can cycle and chip between Lava pushes. Miner tanks for the Pups at the tower, and Flying Machine shoots from range behind the Hound. Flying Machine also got a small buff in the October 19 update (damage 171 → 179). If you're coming from cycle decks, start here.
3. Lava Minion Giant (double air win condition)
Lava Hound, Minion Giant, Evo Baby Dragon, Evo Zap, Hero Mega Minion, Barbarians, Tombstone and Fireball. Average Elixir: 4.0 · RoyaleTracker: 75.1% over 173 battles, the top result on the page.
Minion Giant is the newest flying win condition (Season 87). Pairing two air tanks means a single anti-air building can't cover both. The catch: Minion Giant was nerfed twice in October, once on October 6 (hit speed 1.5s → 1.7s) and again on October 19 (damage 168 → 153). The headline win rate comes from a small sample, so we rank it third.
No Evos or Heroes yet?
Use the LavaLoon list with the base cards: Balloon for Hero Balloon, Mega Minion for Hero Mega Minion and plain Zap for Evo Zap. The plan stays the same. You lose the two abilities and the Evo effect, not the core push.
Which Evolutions and Hero should you run with Lava Hound?
Since the March 2026 update, every deck gets three special slots: one Evolution, one Hero and one Wild (the Wild slot takes either). Lava Hound itself has no Evolution or Hero form, so the slots go to support cards.
- Hero Mega Minion (Wounding Warp, 2 Elixir). The most common Hero in the top Lava lists. The ability warps him to the lowest-HP enemy, hits it, then sends him back. Use it to snipe the Musketeer or Wizard that's shooting your Hound.
- Hero Balloon (Coffin Cadets, 2 Elixir). A Skeletrooper flies to the nearest enemy ground unit within 6 tiles and lands for damage. The September 8 patch cut that landing damage from 263 to 230. Fire it at the ground defender that's about to lock onto Balloon.
- Evo Zap. Shows up in most of the top ten Lava lists. It resets Inferno Tower and Inferno Dragon, which are the two cards that hard-counter a Lava push.
One rule catches people out. Since August 4, 2026, every Hero and Champion ability is single-use per deployment (Boss Bandit is the only exception). Old guides that say "use it again after the cooldown" are wrong now. You get one Wounding Warp per Mega Minion. Spend it on the card that actually stops your push.
What did the October 2026 balance changes do to Lava Hound?
The October 6 patch changed Lava Hound directly:
- Damage: 53 → 71 (Supercell lists it as +33%)
- Hit speed: 1.3s → 1.5s (slower)
Put together, that's 40.8 → 47.3 damage per second, about +16%. The Hound hits less often but harder, so every hit it lands on the tower before it pops is worth more.
The rest of October mostly helped Lava too:
- Barbarian Barrel damage 232 → 215 (Oct 6). It's a common cycle-deck spell, and it still can't hit air.
- Evo Cannon barrage 281 → 261 (Oct 6), and Minion Giant was slowed and later hit for less damage. Both made the meta less defensive.
- Void 2–4 target damage 296 → 307 (Oct 19). That's a buff to a spell that can hurt a Lava support stack, so watch for it.
- Electro Dragon first hit 0.7s → 0.5s (Oct 19). Its chain attack can reach a Pup pile, and it now reacts faster.

How do you play a Lava Hound deck?
Lava is a patient deck. You'll often take a little damage early so you can build one push that ends the game.
- Don't open with Lava Hound. Play Tombstone or Barbarians first and see what your opponent has. You want to know if they carry an Inferno, Electro Dragon or a big air-targeting troop before you spend 7 Elixir.
- Drop the Hound at the back. Placing Lava Hound behind your King Tower gives you time to build Elixir for support. By the time it crosses the bridge you should have Balloon, Miner or Skeleton Dragons ready.
- Time the Balloon right behind the Hound. In LavaLoon, the Balloon should reach the tower while the Hound is still absorbing shots. Too early and the tower shoots the Balloon. Too late and the defense resets.
- Save Zap and Fireball for the defense, not the tower. Zap the Inferno. Fireball the Musketeer or Wizard sitting behind the tower. A cleared defense is worth far more than 159 Crown Tower damage from Fireball.
- Defend with cheap cards, then counterpush. Tombstone and Barbarians absorb Hog Rider and ground pushes. Leftover troops become support for your next Hound.
- Use double Elixir. Lava really comes alive in double Elixir, when you can drop the Hound and full support in one cycle.
How do you counter a Lava Hound deck?
If you're on the other side, these answers work best:
- Inferno Tower and Inferno Dragon. Damage ramps up the longer they hold a target, and at full stage the Inferno Tower deals 847 damage per 0.4s tick at Level 11. A 3,581 HP Hound melts. This is why Lava players carry Zap.
- Splash that hits air. Wizard, Executioner, Baby Dragon and Electro Dragon clear the Pups the moment the Hound pops.
- The right small spell. Pups have 217 HP. A single Zap (192) leaves them alive. Arrows (122 × 3 = 366) kill them if all three waves land. The Log can't hit air at all.
- Minion Horde or Bats on the Balloon. Swarms kill the Balloon fast. Watch for Fireball or Zap first.
- Attack the other lane. A Lava player who drops a 7-Elixir Hound at the back can't defend for several seconds. A fast Hog Rider or Ram Rider push punishes that.
Does Lava Hound work in Season 89?
Yes, and probably better. Supercell's October 19 notes say: "we won't be introducing balance changes at the start of the November season". That means the October 6 Lava buff carries straight into Season 89 (King vs King), which starts November 2.
The official Season 89 notes also put Lava Hound in the Week 4 card group of the new King of Cards event (November 9 – December 7), with Balloon in Week 3. If you already know the deck, those weeks are free milestone progress. Our Season 89 guide has the full event schedule.
