If you have ever stared at a Level 13 card, a pile of duplicate copies, and a Gold counter that never seems big enough, you already know the real Clash Royale endgame is not the ladder — it is card levels. And in September 2026 the whole upgrade system looks different from the one most guides still describe. Elite Wild Cards are gone, the level cap is 16, and Gold is the resource that decides how fast your deck grows.
This is a full, current breakdown of how card levels work, exactly what each level costs after the November 24, 2025 economy overhaul, what changed in Ranked, and whether maxing a card is actually worth it. Every number below comes from Supercell's own progression post, cross-checked on September 3, 2026.
Quick answer: Clash Royale card levels in September 2026
- The level cap is 16. It was raised from 15 in the November 24, 2025 update and applies game-wide.
- Elite Wild Cards no longer exist. They were removed in that same update and converted to Gems. Upgrades now run on regular cards + Gold again — no special currency.
- Levels 15 and 16 are the top tier. They used to require Elite Wild Cards; now they cost normal card copies plus Gold like every other level.
- Maxing one card from Level 1 to 16 costs roughly 365,000 Gold and, for a Common, about 23,000 card copies. Rarer cards need far fewer copies but the same Gold.
- Ranked was capped at Level 15 for six months after the update (through the May 2026 season). Since then it uses the full Level 16 cap — so as of Season 86, Ranked and Trophy Road share the same ceiling.
- Star Levels are still purely cosmetic — a gold animated skin, zero stat change — and a new Crystals currency now handles overflow copies of maxed cards.
What are card levels in Clash Royale?
Every card in Clash Royale has a level, and level is where nearly all of a card's power lives. A higher-level card has more hitpoints and does more damage than the exact same card at a lower level. Two players can run the identical eight-card deck and the one with higher card levels will usually win, because the cards simply hit harder and die slower.
You raise a card's level by collecting copies of that card and spending Gold. Collect enough copies to fill the bar, pay the Gold, and the card levels up. That loop — copies plus Gold — is the entire progression game, and it is deliberately slow so that upgrading feels like a long-term goal rather than a quick purchase.
Cards come in five rarities — Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Champion — and rarity changes how many copies each level needs, not the Gold. A Common needs thousands of copies to max; a Champion needs only a handful, because copies are far scarcer.
Is the max card level 15 or 16?
The max card level is 16. This is the single most common point of confusion right now, because the cap sat at 15 for two years.
Here is the timeline that matters:
- 2023: Level 15 (branded "Elite") was added on top of the old Level 14 ceiling.
- November 24, 2025: the Level 16 update raised the cap to 16 and rebuilt the upgrade economy from the ground up.
So if you are reading a guide that says "max level is 14" or "max level is 15," it is out of date. In September 2026, a fully maxed card is Level 16.
The bigger story is how Supercell got there. In the run-up to the update, the official Clash Royale blog was blunt about why the old system had to go: "When we first introduced Elite Level, Elite Wild Cards were meant to be a more passive form of progression... Over time, we saw that players didn't really experience it that way, and the system itself felt a bit confusing." (supercell.com)
What happened to Elite Wild Cards?
Elite Wild Cards were removed. For two years, Levels 15 was upgraded only with a special currency called Elite Wild Cards, and Level 15 cost no Gold at all. That system is gone.
In Supercell's own words: "we've decided to say goodbye to Elite Wild Cards. Any remaining Elite Wild Cards in your inventory will automatically convert into Gems." (supercell.com)
The November 2025 update swept out a whole layer of overlapping resources and converted them automatically:
- Elite Wild Cards → Gems (spendable in the reworked Gem economy to buy the cards you actually need).
- Books of Cards → Wild Cards (Book of Books → Gems).
- Magic Coins → Gold.
The exact conversion ratio scaled with your King Tower Level. The net effect: upgrading to the top levels is once again just cards + Gold, the same loop you use at every other level — no separate currency to hoard or misunderstand.
Clash Royale upgrade costs: the full Level 11–16 table (September 2026)
These are the current per-level requirements from Supercell's progression rework. Gold is identical across all rarities at a given level — rarity only changes the number of copies. Here are the copies needed to reach each of the top levels:
| To reach level | Common | Rare | Epic | Legendary | Champion | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | 1,000 | 300 | 30 | 4 | 1 | 15,000 |
| 12 | 1,500 | 400 | 50 | 6 | 2 | 25,000 |
| 13 | 2,500 | 550 | 70 | 9 | 5 | 40,000 |
| 14 | 3,500 | 750 | 100 | 12 | 8 | 60,000 |
| 15 | 5,500 | 1,000 | 130 | 14 | 11 | 90,000 |
| 16 | 7,500 | 1,400 | 180 | 20 | 15 | 120,000 |
A few things worth pulling out of that table:
- Level 16 alone costs 120,000 Gold plus a full set of copies — the single most expensive step in the game.
- The mid-levels were made cheaper. Supercell cut card and Gold requirements at Levels 12–14 so the grind to the top "should now feel similar to reaching Level 14" under the old system.
- Champions and Legendaries are copy-cheap but Gold-expensive. A Champion needs only 15 copies to hit Level 16, but it still costs the same 120,000 Gold — which is why Gold, not copies, is the real bottleneck for most accounts.
How much Gold does it take to max one card?
Adding up every level from unlock to 16, a single card costs about 365,625 Gold to fully max — the same Gold total regardless of rarity. Copies are what differ:
- A Common needs roughly 23,000 copies across its whole life to reach Level 16.
- A Rare needs about 4,800 copies; an Epic about 600; a Legendary around 70; a Champion about 42.
Multiply that Gold figure across an eight-card deck and you are looking at nearly 3 million Gold for one maxed deck, before you consider a second deck for a different matchup. This is exactly why Gold — not cards — is the resource veteran accounts run dry on, and why the update turned Gold "from being almost useless for maxed accounts to becoming the main resource you need for every upgrade."
The practical takeaway: if you have spare copies stacked up but no Gold, that is normal and intended. Prioritize Gold income (Pass Royale, shop deals, Clan donations back to you) and only pull the trigger on upgrades for cards in your main deck.
Did card levels change in Ranked mode?
Yes — and this trips up competitive players constantly. When Level 16 launched, Supercell did not immediately allow it in Ranked. From the official FAQ: "cards in Ranked will be capped at Level 15 for the first 6 months after release (until May 2026 season) in order to give you time to start upgrading your cards to Level 16." (supercell.com)
That six-month grace period is over. Since the May 2026 season, Ranked uses the full Level 16 cap, the same as Trophy Road. So in September 2026, there is no longer a level difference between the two ladders — if your opponent is Level 16 on Trophy Road, they can be Level 16 in Ranked too.
If you are trying to break into Ranked in the first place, that is a separate gate entirely — a trophy requirement, not a level one. We break down the current number in our guide to unlocking Ranked in Clash Royale.
What are Star Levels and Crystals?
Two systems sit on top of card levels, and neither adds power.
Star Levels are purely cosmetic. You spend Star Points to give a card a gold, animated skin — up to 3 Star Levels — and they change zero stats: no extra hitpoints, no extra damage. A three-star card looks flashier and nothing else. Treat them as prestige for cards you love, not a progression priority.
Crystals are the newer piece. With the Level 16 update, overflow copies of a maxed card now convert into Crystals, a currency you spend on Shop cosmetics — starting with exclusive emotes — that were not previously tied to Star Points. Like Star Levels, Crystals are a cosmetic sink. Neither one makes your deck stronger, so if you are optimizing for wins, ignore both until your main cards are Level 16.
Should you rush to max your cards?
For 99% of players, no — you should not try to max everything. Card levels compound slowly and Gold is the ceiling, so spreading upgrades across many cards leaves you weak everywhere. The efficient path:
- Pick one deck and commit. Level the eight cards you actually play, not your whole collection.
- Chase Gold, not copies. Copies come naturally; Gold is the wall. Value Pass Royale and shop offers for their Gold, and think twice before donating away Gold you need.
- Upgrade Champions and Legendaries when the Gold is there. They cost few copies, so the only barrier is the flat Gold cost — an easy win when you have the Gold banked.
- Ignore Star Levels and Crystals until your main deck is maxed. They are cosmetic.

FAQ
What is the max card level in Clash Royale? The maximum card level is 16, raised from 15 in the November 24, 2025 update. A fully maxed card in September 2026 is Level 16.
Do you still need Elite Wild Cards to upgrade cards? No. Elite Wild Cards were removed in the November 2025 update and converted into Gems. Levels 15 and 16 now cost regular card copies plus Gold, the same as every other level.
How much Gold does it take to max one card? About 365,000 Gold to take a single card from unlock to Level 16 — the same Gold total for every rarity. A full eight-card deck is close to 3 million Gold.
Is Ranked still capped at Level 15? No. Ranked was held at Level 15 for the first six months after Level 16 launched (through the May 2026 season). Since then it uses the full Level 16 cap, matching Trophy Road.
Do Star Levels make a card stronger? No. Star Levels are purely cosmetic — a gold animated skin with no effect on hitpoints or damage. So are the new Crystals, which are spent on Shop cosmetics.
What is the cheapest way to raise card levels? Focus Gold and copies on one deck rather than your whole collection, prioritize Gold income (it is the real bottleneck), and upgrade Champions and Legendaries when you have Gold banked since they need very few copies.
Is it worth maxing cards in Clash Royale? Only for the deck you actually play. Levels compound slowly and Gold is scarce, so maxing your main eight cards gives far more win rate per Gold than spreading upgrades thin across many cards you rarely use.
