- Offline modes: only 3: Play Now, MyNBA and The W. 2K's Steam listing says everything else needs an internet connection.
- MyCareer offline: no. MyCAREER, the story "Fire & Concrete", MyCAREER Eras, The City and MyTEAM all run on 2K's servers.
- Closest offline career: The W. It is a single-player WNBA career with its own progression, and it works without internet.
- When servers close: 2K's own sunset policy says MyCAREER and MyTEAM stop working completely. 2K hasn't announced a date for NBA 2K27. NBA 2K25's online modes close on December 31, 2026.
If you want to play NBA 2K27 offline, three modes work: Play Now, MyNBA and The W. MyCareer does not. That catches a lot of people out, especially players who pick up the game for the story or for a long flight. Below is every mode and whether it works offline, why MyCareer stays online, what still works when 2K's servers go down, and what happens to your MyPLAYER when NBA 2K27 is eventually shut down.
Can you play NBA 2K27 offline?
Yes, but only three modes. The line comes straight from the legal text on the NBA 2K27 Steam page, which we re-read on November 3, 2026:
"Play Now, MyNBA, and The W are available offline. All other game modes and features require Internet connection, may require online account registration and may not be available to all users at all times." (NBA 2K27 Steam listing)
That covers everything 2K sells as a full mode. Here is what it means in practice:

The rule is simple. Anything tied to your MyPLAYER, your VC or your card collection is stored on 2K's servers, so it can't run offline. Anything that saves locally, like a franchise file or a quick game, can.
Is there an offline MyCareer in NBA 2K27?
No. MyCareer in NBA 2K27 needs a connection from the first menu. That includes:
- The story. "Fire & Concrete" (11 chapters) is part of MyCAREER, so the story needs a connection too. Our Fire & Concrete story guide covers every chapter.

The reason is the economy, not the gameplay. Your MyPLAYER's attributes, Badges, Badge Tokens, Cap Breakers, REP and VC wallet all sit on 2K's servers. VC is one wallet shared by MyCAREER and The City, and 2K doesn't let a local save change it. An offline MyCareer would mean an offline VC wallet, and 2K has never offered one.
Reviews don't always say this clearly. At least one launch review describes MyCareer as "an offline mode" because it's a single-player story. That's true in the sense that you play against the CPU. It isn't true in the sense that you can play it with the router off. The Steam legal line is the one that counts.
Players are not happy about it. In an r/NBA2k thread about offline MyCareer this week, one player wrote: "let people actually finish what they paid for." An older thread about whether Eras would drop offline got the same answer from the community: "Never buying another nba 2k game until their mycareer mode is offline." 2K hasn't changed course, and nothing in Season 2 suggests it will.
What is the best offline alternative to MyCareer?
The W. If you want to create a player and build a career without internet, The W is the closest thing NBA 2K27 has.
2K describes The W and MyWNBA as "dedicated single-player experiences, a Build-as-You-Go progression model, an updated Game Attribute System, all-new Team Badges and Teammate Badges and tools to run a WNBA franchise" (2K Newsroom). In practice you get:
- Your own created player in a WNBA career, with on-court grades and progression.
- Its own progression. The W uses its Build-as-You-Go model rather than the VC attribute upgrades MyCAREER uses.
- Offline play, per the same Steam line.
The trade-off is that The W has no cinematic story to match "Fire & Concrete", no City and no NBA career. It also doesn't share a player with MyCAREER: anything you build in The W stays in The W.
MyNBA is the other option. If what you want is to control one player's career rather than create one, MyNBA Legacy lets you lock to a single star (or a created player) over a 100-year franchise window. It sits under MyNBA, which Steam lists as offline. One caution: 2K announced Legacy after that Steam line was first published, and 2K hasn't put out a separate statement on whether Legacy runs offline. Can you play MyTEAM offline?
No. Even the MyTEAM modes where you only play the CPU, like single-player Triple Threat, Clutch Time, Breakout and Gauntlet, need a connection. Your cards, Player XP, Parallels and MyTEAM Points (MTP) all live on 2K's servers. When the connection drops, MyTEAM won't load at all, and there is no offline team to fall back on.
What still works when NBA 2K27 servers are down?
The same three modes: Play Now, MyNBA and The W. If MyCAREER or MyTEAM won't load, check 2K's official server status page before you start changing your router settings. Three 2K support articles explain the most common connection errors:
- 727E66AC. 2K's fix: "try swapping to another game mode. For example, if you're loading into MyCAREER give MyTEAM a try, or vice versa." It often lets you in, and then you can switch back (2K Support).
- EFEAB30C or 4B538E50. These usually mean you don't have the latest data. 2K says playing "a couple of games in Play Now mode is enough to trigger the download." So the offline-capable mode is also how you fix this one (2K Support).
- The 5-account limit. The same article says you can create at most 5 NBA 2K accounts on one console. Accounts made after the fifth are blocked from 2K's servers, which looks exactly like an outage.

What happens to MyCareer when 2K shuts down the servers?
It stops working. This is the part most buyers don't know: an NBA 2K game doesn't keep its online modes forever. 2K's general server sunset article says that for discontinued games:
"MyCAREER and MyTEAM will no longer be available, and it will no longer be possible to earn Virtual Currency (VC). While you will still be able to enjoy Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA, any features that require a connection to 2K servers will be unavailable." (2K Support, NBA 2K: Server Sunsets)
Put plainly, when the servers close, your MyPLAYER, the VC you bought and your MyTEAM collection all become unplayable. The offline modes keep working forever. That's exactly why the "offline MyCareer" question matters so much: the story you paid for has an end date.
How long does that usually take? Here is the pattern from 2K's own support pages:

NBA 2K25 gets a bit over two years of online play. 2K has not announced a sunset date for NBA 2K27. If 2K sticks to the 2K25 pattern, MyCareer in NBA 2K27 would probably stay online until around the end of 2028. That is our projection from the 2K25 dates, not a 2K statement, so treat it as an estimate.
Can you play NBA 2K27 offline on Switch 2, PS5 or Xbox?

- Download the latest update before you go. A missing update is the most common reason for errors like EFEAB30C, and an offline console can't download one.
- Set rosters before you leave. Live roster updates need a connection, so a MyNBA save started offline keeps the last roster you downloaded.
Is NBA 2K27 worth buying if you only play offline?
Only if you mainly play MyNBA, The W or quick games. Buying NBA 2K27 for a single-player MyCareer you can play anywhere is a mistake: it doesn't exist. If MyNBA is your mode, offline players on r/NBA2k have been more positive than the online crowd. In threads from launch, players said the AI feels smarter and that MyNBA Legacy has been fun. That's player opinion, not a measured result.
