PoE Betrayal Guide (3.29): Best Syndicate Rewards, the Aisling Slam & Catarina

An Immortal Syndicate encounter in a Path of Exile map — Jun's defeated Syndicate members standing before a Safehouse Leader

Updated for 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" (league live since 2026-07-24; verified 2026-08-31). Betrayal's core loop is unchanged this league — 3.29 only adjusted its drops (more on that below), so every strategy here is current.

Betrayal is the most rewarding "encounter" mechanic in Path of Exile that most players never learn to run properly. It hands you a board of criminals, four safehouses, and a genuinely confusing web of ranks and rivalries — and if you manage it well, it turns into one of the game's best sources of crafting currency, scarabs, and the single strongest veiled craft in the game: the Aisling slam. This guide is the cheat sheet: how the Immortal Syndicate board works, the five actions after every fight, the best member rewards in 3.29, how the Aisling veiled bench and Catarina fight pay out, and how to juice Betrayal on the Atlas.

Quick answer: how Betrayal works in 3.29

  • The board: 16 possible Syndicate members, 14 active at once, spread across 4 divisions — Transportation, Fortification, Research, Intervention. Each member gives a different reward depending on which division they lead.
  • The loop: kill Jun Ortoi's Syndicate members in maps → use one of 5 actions (Interrogate, Bargain, Execute, Betray, Release) → fill a division's intelligence to 100% → raid its Safehouse → eventually fight the Mastermind, Catarina.
  • The money: Aisling in Research = the Veiled Chaos Orb bench (the "Aisling slam"), the best veiled craft in the game. Every Intervention member drops a chest of a specific scarab — and 3.29 doubled scarab-chest drops, so scarab farming is stronger than ever.
  • Commercial reality: Betrayal is a currency-and-crafting farm. It funds high-end crafts (Aisling slams eat Exalts and Divines) and Catarina is a pinnacle boss some players buy a carry for.

What is Betrayal and the Immortal Syndicate?

Betrayal is an Atlas mechanic run by Jun Ortoi, the Veiled Master. She's hunting a criminal organisation called the Immortal Syndicate, and as you clear maps you'll run into her fighting its members. Defeat those members, decide their fate, and you slowly gather intelligence on where the Syndicate is hiding — culminating in a raid on their leader.

Per the official Betrayal page: "Members of the Immortal Syndicate can drop items with new Veiled Modifiers. Take these to Jun to Unveil the item and pick from one of three properties for the item to receive." (pathofexile.com/betrayal) That unveiling system is the heart of Betrayal's value — it's how the game's strongest deterministic crafts get unlocked.

How does the Immortal Syndicate board work?

The Syndicate board has four divisions, each with its own flavour of reward:

  • Transportation — bulk stacks of uncrafted loot: currency, gems, divination cards, unique items, scarabs.
  • Fortification — trapped chests you loot under a timer, plus higher-tier crafting benches.
  • Research — the crafting-bench division. The highest-value crafts (Aisling's veiled bench, Tora's gems) live here.
  • Intervention — the scarab division. Each member here drops a chest of one specific scarab type.

The Immortal Syndicate board, showing the four divisions, member cards and the green rivalry / red rank lines you manage between them.

Each division shows the member leading it and that member's rank. Members range from Unranked up to Rank 3 (three stars — Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain). Higher rank means more intelligence when you interrogate them and better, rarer safehouse rewards — at the cost of a tougher fight in the safehouse. Your job is to get the members you want into the divisions where their reward is best, and to rank them up before you raid.

What are the 5 actions after a Betrayal fight?

After you defeat a Syndicate member, you pick one action. This is the part that trips everyone up, so here's the cheat sheet:

  • Interrogate — always available. Sends the member to prison for the next 3 Syndicate encounters and grants intelligence toward their division's safehouse. It lowers their rank by one. This is your main way to fill an intelligence bar; higher-rank members give far more intelligence.
  • Bargain — member-dependent. Depending on who it is, you get currency or veiled items, more intelligence, or the member changes division. Good when you want loot now.
  • Executeraises the member's rank by +1, but only if another member is present to witness it. This is how you rank up the members you actually want strong before a raid.
  • Betray — available when two defeated members are present who aren't already rivals. It turns them into Rivals, who then tend to appear together in future encounters. Useful for controlling who shows up.
  • Release — no reward, no intelligence, no rank change. You use it to clear a member you don't care about without progressing them.

How do you build the board for currency?

The winning pattern is simple once you see it: pick two target safehouses and funnel everything into them.

  • Get your two best money members (for most players: Aisling → Research and one strong Intervention scarab member) into the right divisions.
  • Execute them (with a witness present) to push them toward Rank 3, so their safehouse reward is maxed.
  • Shove every member you don't care about into the two divisions you never plan to raid, and use their interrogations to feed intelligence into your two target safehouses.

Maxroll's Betrayal farming guide frames the board management the same way: put the least-desired members in divisions you never run, and use them to progress the two safehouses you do. It takes a few maps of setup, but once the board is arranged you can farm the same two safehouses on repeat.

Best Betrayal member rewards in 3.29

Here are the standout member-and-division combos players target, per the Maxroll Betrayal Farming Guide. (Verify current currency values yourself on poe.ninja — Betrayal outputs change price week to week.)

Member & divisionRewardWhy it matters
Aisling → ResearchCrafting bench: Veiled Chaos Orb ("the Aisling slam")The best deterministic veiled craft in the game
Vorici → FortificationBench: 100× Orb of Fusing on your itemCheap 6-links and socket setups
Tora → ResearchBench: gem currency + a gemGem levelling and quality value
Hillock → ResearchBench: Eldritch currencyFeeds Eldritch Implicit crafting
Any Intervention memberChest of a specific scarab typeMass scarab farming — doubled in 3.29
GraviciusDivination cards (stacks / chests / swaps)Targeted div-card farming
It That Fled → InterventionBreach ScarabsFeeds Breach mapping

The two most valuable are Aisling in Research (the veiled bench) and the Intervention members as a group (scarabs). Everything else is situational — chase the members whose rewards feed your current build or farm.

Watch-out: Vorici's old "quality slam" and Hillock's old quality role are outdated — don't chase framings from pre-Kalandra guides. The reward matrix above is the current 3.29 one.

What is the Aisling slam and Veiled Orb crafting?

This is why serious crafters run Betrayal at all. When Aisling leads the Research safehouse at Tier 4 (Mastermind's Lair level), her bench performs the Aisling slam: it removes a random modifier from your item and adds a Veiled modifier. You then take the item to Jun to unveil it — she offers three possible mods and you keep one.

The same effect exists as a consumable, the Veiled Orb (formerly Veiled Chaos Orb). Per Maxroll's veiled crafting guide: "A Veiled Orb adds a Veiled Mod. The Orb removes a single modifier at random before adding a veiled mod." (maxroll.gg veiled crafting) Veiled mods include some of the strongest hybrid affixes in the game (trigger mods, hunter/warlord/redeemer influence mods), which is why an Aisling slam on a well-prepared item can be worth many Divine Orbs of value — and why it eats Exalts and Divines to set up. If you're crafting toward that, keep your Divine Orb stock topped up so a good slam result isn't wasted.

Once you've unveiled a mod a few times, cheaper bench versions of it unlock at your hideout crafting bench — so every unveil is also permanent progress.

Catarina, Master of Undeath: the Mastermind fight

Fully investigate the Immortal Syndicate and you can raid its leader, Catarina, Master of Undeath. There are two ways in: raid safehouses until the Mastermind's intelligence bar is full and then open portals to the Lair by talking to Jun in your hideout, or collect a Syndicate Medallion map fragment (dropped by Safehouse Leaders in high-tier maps) and run it directly through your Map Device.

The fight has three stages, per the Maxroll Catarina guide: the Forbidden Vault (Catarina fights with melee, soul mortars and summoned minions before going invulnerable and fleeing), the Unearthed Hideout (a monster-filled zone granting 200% additional experience — great for levelling), and the Sculpture Garden (destroy four invulnerability totems while dodging a central totem's shockwaves, then kill her).

Her drop table includes powerful uniques (Cinderswallow Urn, Bitterbind Point, The Queen's Hunger, The Devouring Diadem and others), a Veiled Orb, and — new to 3.29 — The Allflame Ember of Kulemak. Catarina is a genuine pinnacle-tier fight; if your build isn't ready for the totem phase, a Mastermind carry is a common shortcut.

How to juice Betrayal on the Atlas in 3.29

To farm Betrayal hard, you force Jun into your maps and stack the passives and scarabs that improve the encounters.

Betrayal Scarabs (names and effects per poedb.tw):

  • Betrayal Scarab — Area contains Jun.
  • Betrayal Scarab of the Allflame — 75% increased number of monster packs substituted by Allflame Embers in Area.
  • Betrayal Scarab of Reinforcements — Syndicate members in Area have 50% increased chance to be accompanied by reinforcements.
  • Betrayal Scarab of Unbreaking — interrogated targets in Area have a 50% chance to not lose rank on completing the interrogation.

That last one, Unbreaking, is the sleeper pick: normally Interrogate drops a member's rank, so Unbreaking lets you keep interrogating for intelligence without undoing your rank-up work.

Atlas passives worth taking: Obsessed with Vengeance (+20% chance your maps contain Jun, and dropped scarabs are 20% more likely to be Betrayal Scarabs), Bribery (members far more likely to Bargain, and drop far more when bargained with), Effective Leadership (Leaders show up more often and drop an extra veiled item), and Lethal Extraction / Test of Loyalty for faster ranking and intelligence. Stack the Jun-chance nodes to hit near-100% Jun-per-map, then let a Betrayal Scarab guarantee it when you want a focused session.

What changed for Betrayal in 3.29?

3.29 didn't rework Betrayal, but it did tweak the drops. Straight from the official 3.29.0 patch notes (pathofexile.com):

  • "The average number of Scarabs dropped from Scarab Chests in Betrayal Safehouses has been doubled." — this is the big one: Intervention/scarab farming got materially better.
  • "The Syndicate Mastermind can now only drop The Allflame Ember of Kulemak," and Syndicate Leaders can no longer drop Allflame Embers — Betrayal's tie-in to the new Curse of the Allflame currency was narrowed.
  • Trapped Stashes in Safehouses now have a 15-second timer (up from 10), and Cluster Jewels from stashes/crafting sprees are capped at item level 83.
  • Vagan's Fortification reward is now a Trapped Stash with Enshrouded Uniques, and his Transportation reward is now a chest of Trarthan Scarabs.

Everything else — the board, the ranks, the five actions, the Aisling slam, the Catarina fight — is the same as last league, so older mechanical guides still apply.

Ready-made currency and carries

Betrayal funds high-end crafting, but Aisling slams and Catarina attempts both cost real currency to set up. If you'd rather skip the grind:

FAQ

What is the Aisling slam in Path of Exile? It's the Tier 4 (Mastermind's Lair level) Aisling Research safehouse bench, which removes a random modifier from your item and adds a Veiled modifier that you then unveil at Jun. It's the strongest deterministic veiled craft in the game and the main reason serious crafters run Betrayal.

How many members are in the Immortal Syndicate? There are 16 possible members, with 14 active on your board at any time, spread across the four divisions (Transportation, Fortification, Research, Intervention). Jun Ortoi is not a member — she's the master who runs the investigation and unveils your items.

What do Interrogate, Execute and Betray do? Interrogate sends a member to prison, grants intelligence and lowers their rank by one. Execute raises a member's rank by one but needs another member present as a witness. Betray turns two present, non-rival members into Rivals so they spawn together. Release clears the member with no reward or progress.

How do you fight Catarina, the Mastermind? Fill the Mastermind's intelligence bar by raiding safehouses and then open the Lair from Jun in your hideout, or collect a Syndicate Medallion fragment from a Safehouse Leader in a high-tier map and run it in your Map Device. The fight is three stages ending in the Sculpture Garden totem phase.

Did 3.29 change Betrayal? Not mechanically. 3.29 doubled the scarabs dropped from Safehouse scarab chests, restricted the Mastermind's Allflame drop to The Allflame Ember of Kulemak, extended the Trapped Stash timer to 15 seconds, capped stash Cluster Jewels at item level 83, and changed Vagan's rewards. The board, ranks, actions and Aisling slam are unchanged.

Is Betrayal worth farming for currency in 3.29? Yes. With scarab-chest drops doubled this league, Intervention (scarab) safehouses are a strong mass-currency farm, and the Aisling Research bench remains the best veiled craft in the game. Set your board up once and you can repeat the same two safehouses for reliable output.
