PoE2 Forbidden Rites Tribute Farming Guide (0.5.5): Earn & Spend Tribute the Right Way

Path of Exile 2 Ritual encounter spawned in a zone with the ritual circle active

Quick answer: In Path of Exile 2's Forbidden Rites event (Patch 0.5.5), launching September 4, 2026 at 1 PM PDT (20:00 UTC), Ritual is seeded into every campaign zone — so Tribute becomes the currency that gears you up while you level. You earn Tribute by killing the monsters a Ritual revives, then spend it in the Ritual reward window: buy an offering outright, or defer it (lock it at a reduced price for a later Ritual). Because the event runs on a fresh, independent economy, smart Tribute play in the first hours is one of the biggest early edges you can get. The golden rules: you only need to defer an item once per map (not on every reroll), the reroll — not the Tribute — is your real bottleneck, and rerolling the offering page costs a base 1,000 Tribute before any reductions. This guide covers exactly how to earn Tribute quickly, when to defer versus buy, and how to convert that head start into real currency. Verified against pathofexile.com, poe2db.tw, poewiki.net and poe.ninja as of September 1, 2026.

Ritual has always been one of the highest-value-per-second mechanics in the Path of Exile economy, but until now you had to reach the Atlas endgame to touch it. Forbidden Rites changes that. As GGG put it in the announcement: "The Forbidden Rites and Patch 0.5.5 arrive next week in Path of Exile 2, on September 4 PDT. Patch notes will be made available soon." (pathofexile.com forum). The short version — Ritual goes into the campaign, the economy resets, and everyone starts from zero Tribute at the same second. Here's how to be the exile who turns that into a wallet full of Exalted and Divine Orbs first.

What is Tribute in PoE2?

Tribute is the local currency you spend inside a Ritual — you cannot trade it, stash it, or carry it between encounters. When you activate a Ritual effigy, it revives the monsters you just killed in that circle and you kill them again; each pack you clear awards Tribute for that Ritual only. When the fight ends, a reward window opens showing a page of offerings — currency, gear, uniques, and Omens — each with a Tribute price tag.

You then do one of three things with that Tribute:

  • Buy an offering outright and take it immediately.
  • Defer an offering — lock it in at a reduced Tribute cost so it reappears (cheaper) in a future Ritual, letting you save up for expensive items you can't afford right now.
  • Reroll the whole page to see a fresh set of offerings, for a base cost of 1,000 Tribute before reductions.

Any Tribute you don't spend is lost when you leave the Ritual, so the mechanic is really a fast optimization puzzle: squeeze the most value out of every window before it closes. The full breakdown of every Ritual encounter type lives in our Ritual types guide, and the endgame Ritual farming loop is covered here — this page is about the event-specific, campaign-level Tribute game.

How does the Forbidden Rites event change Ritual?

Forbidden Rites is a one-month event league with its own fresh economy, running alongside the standard 0.5 league on the road to PoE2's full 1.0 launch later this year. The core twist is that Rituals now spawn throughout the campaign, not just in maps. That has three big consequences for Tribute:

  • You gear up from Act 1. Instead of running naked-ish until the Atlas, you can spend campaign Tribute on starter gem links, baseline gear, and consumables (egamersworld, ezbuff). Early Tribute is effectively free power.
  • Rituals chain and stack bosses. Unique enemies slain inside a Ritual can carry over into the next area's Ritual, forcing you to kill them again — so the later Rituals in a chain become frantic multi-boss fights with fatter reward pools (maxroll, mobalytics). More danger, more Tribute, better offerings.
  • Ritual Effigies appear on the World Map. Clusters of unique Ritual Effigies grant unique rewards. Note: GGG did not publish the event's exact reward tables or Tribute prices in the written announcement, so treat any "guaranteed item / fixed drop" claim you see elsewhere as unverified until the patch notes land.

0.5.5 also ships a Trial of Chaos overhaul (extended room count and new risk/reward "wager" modifiers), the returning Viridian Wildwood and Abyssal Ravines in the endgame, and Expedition and Runes of Aldur going core. And per GGG's own note, there are no major balance changes in this patch — which is exactly why you can plan your farm now instead of waiting on patch notes.

How do you earn Tribute fast in the campaign?

Tribute is earned per Ritual by killing the revived monsters, so throughput comes down to killing more, faster, inside each circle. For the event, GGG has also confirmed that Tribute is earned individually per party member, so grouping doesn't split your take — everyone banks their own. Practical priorities for the first day:

  • Don't skip campaign Rituals. Every one is free gear and a Tribute payout. In a fresh economy where nobody has currency yet, a single good early offering (a movement-speed base, a resist item, a spirit gem) is worth more than it will be all league.
  • Bring pack-clear, not single-target, into the circle. The effigy revives packs; area damage and clear speed generate Tribute far faster than a slow single-target setup.
  • Push the chain. Because unique enemies carry into the next zone's Ritual, completing the chain instead of bailing early gives you the biggest, most rewarding final encounters.
  • Layer Ritual-boosting modifiers as they unlock. As you move toward the Atlas, anything that increases rerolls, reduces reroll/defer cost, or adds offerings compounds hard — see the spend section below.

The event's independent economy means the whole server is on the same clock. Getting to maps with a stack of deferred value while divine and exalted prices are still spiking is the entire game — see our fresh-economy currency start guide for the macro plan.

How should you spend Tribute — defer or buy?

This is where most players leak value. The mechanic is more subtle than the in-game tooltip suggests, and the community has hammered out the real rules:

  • You only need to defer an item once per map. Deferring it a single time locks the reduced price so it does not increase the next time it appears — you do not have to re-defer it on every reroll within the same map. Within one map, a deferred item's price stays put after a reroll; the price only creeps back up on the next map if you never deferred it.
  • Defer the expensive things, buy the cheap things. For a casual run, deferring items as often as possible is the more profitable default because it pulls the discounted item to you sooner. If you're chasing one very valuable offering across many rerolls, you may skip deferring lesser items to keep Tribute free.
  • Quantity first, quality later. Early on, buy the lesser currency offerings for raw volume; save deferral for the high-value uniques and Omens you genuinely want.
  • The reroll is your bottleneck — not the Tribute. You will almost always have Tribute to spare; what limits your value is how many times you can reroll the page. Every point of reroll-cost reduction and every extra reroll source is worth more than raw Tribute income.
  • Deferral cost can hit zero. With enough defer-cost reduction stacked, you can defer for 0 Tribute — at which point deferring everything worth having is pure upside.

One-line strategy: stack reroll/defer-cost reduction, reroll aggressively, defer everything valuable once per map, and buy cheap currency in bulk to fund the next window.

Turning a Tribute head start into real currency

Tribute itself never leaves the Ritual — but what you buy with it does. In a fresh economy, the exiles who bank early currency and crafting bases from campaign Rituals are the ones who convert first, before prices normalize. Two things move fastest at league start:

  • Exalted Orbs — the everyday crafting and trade base currency (it's the economy's pricing unit). You'll want a stack early to roll affixes onto your gear, and it's the currency most trades are priced in.
  • Divine Orbs — the high-end benchmark. On a fresh economy the Divine-to-Exalted ratio starts near parity, then climbs steadily as Exalted floods the market — so a Divine buys more and more Exalted (and costs more Exalted to buy) the deeper into the event you go. Always check the live rate on poe.ninja before you trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the PoE2 Forbidden Rites event (0.5.5) start? It launches on September 4, 2026 at 1 PM PDT, which is 20:00 UTC the same day. It's a one-month event league with a fresh, independent economy running alongside the standard 0.5 league.

What is Tribute used for in Path of Exile 2? Tribute is the currency you earn and spend inside a single Ritual encounter. You use it to buy offerings (currency, gear, uniques, Omens) outright, to defer them for a cheaper future purchase, or to reroll the offering page. It can't be traded, stashed, or carried between Rituals.

Do I have to defer an item every time I reroll? No. You only need to defer an item once per map. After that single defer, its price won't increase within that map even if you reroll — it only rises on the next map if you never deferred it. Re-deferring on every reroll is a common misconception.

How much does it cost to reroll a Ritual in PoE2? The base reroll cost is 1,000 Tribute before any reductions. Because you usually have Tribute to spare, the number of rerolls you can afford — not your Tribute total — is what actually limits your rewards, so reroll-cost reduction is extremely valuable.

Is Ritual only in the campaign during Forbidden Rites? No — Ritual is seeded into every campaign zone for the event, but it also remains in the endgame. The event simply lets you start earning Tribute and gearing from Act 1 instead of waiting for the Atlas.

Are there balance changes in 0.5.5? GGG stated there are no major balance changes in this patch, so builds and farming plans made now should stay valid. Some smaller functional changes (Expedition and Runes of Aldur going core, Trial of Chaos rework) can affect specific strategies — check the official patch notes when they release.

Should I buy PoE2 currency for the event? That's your call — a fresh economy means everyone starts poor, so early currency goes a long way. If you want to skip the opening grind and gear immediately, you can get Divine Orbs, Exalted Orbs, or a full currency package with instant delivery.
