Max Battles are Pokemon GO's co-op boss fights at Power Spots, and they are the main way to catch Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon. They run on their own currency, their own map locations and their own move system, which is why most new players waste particles in their first week. This guide covers how Max Battles work as of October 23, 2026 (Twilight Trails season, which ends December 1, 2026): what each battle costs, how much you can carry, which Max Moves to train, how to set up a Private Group, how to split roles in a team of four, and the key Max Battle dates from the Lake Trio Max Battle Day on October 24 through the GO Wild Area weekend in November.
Quick answer (checked October 23, 2026): Max Battles unlock at Trainer level 20 and take place at Power Spots, not Gyms. You bring 3 Pokemon (only Max Pokemon can join, so all three must be Dynamax or Gigantamax, plus a few Legendary exceptions), team up with up to 3 other Trainers (or lock the lobby with the new Private Group button on Dynamax battles), and pay Max Particles only if you win: 250 for a one-star boss and 800 for a five-star Legendary or six-star Gigantamax. You can collect 800 Max Particles per day and hold 1,500 at most outside of events. Fill the Max Meter with Fast Attacks, then spend your 3 Max Moves on damage, shields or heals. Next up: Dynamax Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf Max Battle Day on Saturday, October 24, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. local.
How do Max Battles work in Pokemon GO?
A Max Battle is a raid-style fight against a Power Spot Boss. Power Spots are the purple platforms with the Gigantamax symbol above them, and they appear and disappear on the map over time. Tap one, choose Battle, and you enter a lobby with nearby Trainers.
The core rules, per the official Pokemon GO Max Battles guide on pokemon.com, the Pokemon GO Help Center and official announcements:
- Party size: you choose 3 Pokemon, and only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokemon can join a Max Battle (plus Crowned Sword Zacian, Crowned Shield Zamazenta and Eternatus).
- Lobby size: up to 4 Trainers for one-star to five-star bosses. For six-star Gigantamax and Eternamax Eternatus battles, up to 100 Trainers can join one battle, split into groups of four or fewer, a limit raised from 40 starting with GO Fest 2025: Max Finale (official post).
- No Raid Pass in person: walking up to a Power Spot costs only Max Particles. Since May 19, 2025 you can also join remotely by spending a Remote Raid Pass on top of the normal particle cost, within a limit of 10 Remote Raids per day. The official announcement says "the ability to join Max Battles remotely will remain in effect," and in-person players earn more Premier Balls and XP.
- Pay on win only: "the Max Particles required to participate in the battle are only used after you successfully defeat the Power Spot Boss," according to pokemon.com. If you lose, you can retry for free until the Power Spot disappears.
- Unlock level: Max Battles, Power Spots and Max Particles unlock at Trainer level 20 since the Level 80 update (they unlocked at level 13 before), per Eurogamer's level rewards table and the Pokemon GO Wiki.
You cannot Dynamax a Pokemon you caught in the wild. Max Pokemon come mainly from winning Max Battles, plus the To the Max! Special Research, event research and GO Pass rewards (Dynamax Meltan arrives through the GO Pass in November), and Special Trades. A Gigantamax Pokemon traded to you always counts as a Special Trade, and the normal allowance is one per day (events sometimes add more).
How much do Max Battles cost in Max Particles?
Max Particles are the whole economy. You spend them to enter battles and to train Max Moves, so every particle you waste on the wrong upgrade is a battle you cannot enter later.
| Max Battle tier (selected) | Entry cost (Max Particles) | Trainers per lobby | Typical boss |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-star | 250 | 4 | Early-evolution Dynamax Pokemon |
| Three-star | 400 | 4 | Fully evolved Dynamax Pokemon |
| Five-star | 800 | 4 | Dynamax Legendaries such as the Lake Trio |
| Six-star | 800 | up to 100, in groups of 4 | Gigantamax Pokemon |
The 250 one-star cost is shown on the in-game lobby screen (Eurogamer and Pokemon GO Hub confirm it). Two-star and four-star bosses also exist but appear less often. The Help Center only says costs "vary depending on the power of the boss," so the three-star, five-star and six-star figures come from long-running tracker data (Pokemon GO Hub, Nintendo Wire, GoDex, PoGoPit) rather than an official table. Pokemon GO Hub's Dynamax Moltres guide, for example, lists that five-star fight at 800 Max Particles. Check the cost on the lobby screen before you commit, especially during events.
How do you get Max Particles fast?
- Visit Power Spots: about 100 Max Particles per spot, with a bonus on your first visit to a spot each day (about 120).
- Walk: about 300 Max Particles for every 2 km, claimed from the Power Spot tab of the Nearby menu. Adventure Sync distance counts.
- Event bonuses: Max Battle Days raise the rates. For October 24 the daily collection limit rises to 1,600 and Power Spots give 8x particles, per the official event post and Leek Duck. Max Mondays add smaller perks; on October 19, Power Spots refreshed more often and in-person wins gave a Rare Candy XL.
- Tickets: the October 24 Ultra Ticket Box costs US$4.99 and includes the event ticket plus 800 Max Particles, per the official event post.
The two limits to respect, both stated in the official Help Center, are the 800 particle daily collection limit and the 1,500 particle bag capacity. If you are near the cap the night before a big day, spend some particles on Max Move training first so the event-day collection has room to land. A practical trick from veteran players: hold your 2 km walking claim until after the daily reset so you can bank it into the next day's limit.
What are Max Moves, and which should you level first?
Every Max Pokemon has three Max Moves. Once your team fills the Max Meter, each Trainer gets 3 turns in Max form and picks one of these moves each turn:
| Max Move | What it does | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Max Attack (Dynamax) | Damage, type matches your Fast Attack | 250 power | 300 power | 350 power |
| G-Max Attack (Gigantamax) | Damage, fixed unique type | 350 power | 400 power | 450 power |
| Max Guard | Adds a damage-blocking shield to your Pokemon | +20 HP | +40 HP | +60 HP |
| Max Spirit | Heals you and all allies by a share of your max HP | 8% | 12% | 16% |
Values per Pokemon GO Hub's Max Battles guide (updated October 20, 2026). Max Attack starts unlocked at level 1; Max Guard and Max Spirit start locked.
The most important rule: a Dynamax Pokemon's Max Attack takes the type of its current Fast Attack. A Water-type with a non-Water Fast Attack does not get Max Geyser. Before you spend a single particle, check the Fast Attack and use a Fast TM if it is wrong. Gigantamax Pokemon ignore this rule because their G-Max move is fixed, which is why they hit 100 power harder at every level.
Training costs Max Particles plus Candy, and Candy XL at higher levels. The official screenshot above shows unlocking Max Guard on a Gigantamax Blastoise for 400 Max Particles and 50 Candy. The exact Candy cost depends on the species' upgrade group.
Where to put resources, in order:
- Max Attack to level 3 on two or three attackers that cover common boss weaknesses. Spreading particles across a dozen species leaves you with nothing that clears a six-star.
- Max Guard on one bulky defender you will use as the tank.
- Max Spirit on one high-HP Pokemon such as Blissey, the top healer by HP stat.
- Never trade a trained Max Pokemon. Trading keeps unlocked moves unlocked, but every Max Move level resets to 1. Trade spares, keep the one you invested in.
What is the best Max Battle strategy for a team of four?
Pokemon.com recommends splitting each group of four into two attackers, one healer and one tank. Here is how a clean run plays out:
- Charge with Fast Attacks only. In the official guide's words: "It might seem counterintuitive, but Fast Attacks fill your Max Meter more quickly than Charged Attacks, so it's not a bad idea to focus on using Fast Attacks." Lead with a defender that has a fast, 0.5-second Fast Attack and resists the boss.
- Swipe to dodge. When three lines appear above your Pokemon (the battle log shows "Attack Incoming"), swipe left or right to cut the damage. Attacks aimed at the whole group cannot be dodged.
- Grab the pink Max Meter orbs. Swiping into the energy icons that appear on the field charges the meter faster.
- Swap in your role Pokemon for the Max phase. When the meter fills you get a short timer to switch. Attackers bring out their best Max Attack user; the tank uses Max Guard; the healer uses Max Spirit. The Pokemon with the most shields draws the boss's attacks, which is why one dedicated tank protects everyone else.
- Switch back to your defender right after the Max phase. There is no cooldown on switching.
- Do not stall. Trackers report that bosses hit much harder roughly six minutes into a fight, so a slow, safe team often loses to the clock.
If all your Pokemon faint in a three-star or harder battle, you cannot bring in new ones, but you can Cheer to charge your teammates' Max Meter. A Max Mushroom doubles your damage for 30 minutes, and several Mushrooms stack their duration. After a win you can station one Pokemon at the Power Spot: it earns you Candy when it returns and gives every later challenger an attack bonus.
How do you make a Private Group for Max Battles?
Private lobbies for Max Battles are now live. Trainers on r/TheSilphRoad spotted them on October 22, 2026, and the official Help Center now documents the steps. To create a Private Group for a Dynamax battle:
- Enter a Power Spot by tapping it on the Map.
- Tap the Private Group button under the Battle button.
- Enter a group code and tap Create Group.
- Share the code with your friends and wait for them to join.
You can switch the group back to public by tapping the Private button at the top of the lobby screen. The Help Center is explicit on one limit: "Creating a private group is not available when battling Gigantamax Pokemon." For six-star fights you still rely on the public lobby and invites.
Invites work differently. From a four-Trainer lobby you can invite up to 3 friends, and an invite does not reserve a seat: when 4 Trainers have joined or the lobby timer runs out, the battle starts. Invited friends also count toward the remote limit, and each Trainer can join only 10 Remote Raids per day outside events. That is why a Private Group is the cleaner choice whenever your whole team is standing at the same Power Spot.

How do you beat the Lake Trio on October 24?
Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf are all pure Psychic types, so they take super effective damage (1.6x in Pokemon GO) from Bug, Ghost and Dark attacks. Gigantamax Gengar's G-Max Terror (Ghost) is the standout attacker for most players, and Blissey remains the go-to healer. One commenter in the r/TheSilphRoad Lake Trio counters thread summed up the popular plan as "Blissey with Pound and then Gmax Gengar." Each five-star attempt costs 800 Max Particles, so the 800 in the US$4.99 Ultra Ticket Box covers exactly one extra win. Fill your bag before 2 p.m. and remember that regional availability means you will only see one of the three without travelling or a remote invite.
How do Max Battles fit into the rest of the week?
Max Battles stack with the other events running this autumn. The Pokemon GO events this week roundup lists every raid, Spotlight Hour and Max Monday day by day. The Halloween 2026 event guide covers Dynamax Sableye week and the Mega Chandelure raid day on October 31, and the November Community Day guide covers Pawniard on November 21.
