Applies to the Valheim 1.0 launch on Tuesday, September 9, 2026. Valheim is still in Early Access today — the live default branch is 0.221.12 (released February 19, 2026). The Deep North is an empty placeholder biome right now and gets filled in at 1.0. Every claim below is sourced to Iron Gate's official 1.0 FAQ and the official dedicated-server guide; where Iron Gate has not published a detail, this guide says so rather than guessing.
Valheim leaves Early Access on September 9, 2026 — four-and-a-half years after it launched — shipping its eighth and final biome, the Deep North, plus the first PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions and full crossplay. It is the biggest moment in the game's history, and the good news is that you do not have to do much to be ready. But there are a handful of smart, five-minute jobs that will save you a headache on launch day, and one you should absolutely not skip: backing up your world.
This is a practical, do-this-now checklist for the days before 1.0, built entirely from Iron Gate's own answers. It covers what happens to your saves, whether to start fresh or keep going, how to get a character to the far north so you can reach the Deep North fast, what to do about mods and achievements, and how to prep a dedicated server. No hype, no invented Deep North "leaks" — just the jobs worth doing before Tuesday.
Quick answer: how to prepare for Valheim 1.0 in 60 seconds
- Back up your world and character files now. Iron Gate's FAQ says nothing is deleted, but a manual copy is free insurance before any major update. This is the one non-negotiable.
- You do NOT need a new world. Old saves keep working and unexplored areas generate Deep North content. Iron Gate recommends a fresh start "to get the best possible experience" — but it is a recommendation, not a requirement.
- If you're keeping your world, leave the far north unexplored. Biome generation "will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored," so the northern edge needs to be fresh for the Deep North to appear there.
- Achievements track from the moment you install 1.0 — killing Eikthyr 500 times before launch doesn't count; you'll need to kill him again.
- Do not update mods yet. There's no guarantee any mod works on day one, and a cheated/modded character can be permanently locked out of the new achievements.
- Dedicated server owners: copy your world file off the server before launch and expect to update the server tool the moment 1.0 goes live.
Everything below expands each of these into the exact steps.
First, the one thing you must not skip: back up your world
Iron Gate has been explicit that your progress is safe. Asked what happens to saves at 1.0, the studio's FAQ answer is a single word: "Nothing. Your old saves will still be where you last left them, and you can continue to play with them if you like."
That is reassuring — but "the game won't delete your files" and "I have a backup" are not the same thing. Corrupted saves, a bad shutdown mid-update, or a mod that no longer loads can all cost you a world. A manual copy takes thirty seconds and costs nothing.
Where Valheim stores your files (from the official dedicated-server guide):
- Windows: `%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim`
- Linux: `~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim`
Inside that folder, the `worlds_local` folder holds your worlds (each is a paired `.db` and `.fwl` file) and `characters_local` holds your characters (`.fch` files). Copy the whole `Valheim` folder to a second drive, a USB stick, or cloud storage. Do this before September 9, and do it again right before you first launch 1.0.
If you play on Xbox, your saves live in the cloud and sync to PC through the Microsoft Store version — that Xbox↔PC link is the only cross-platform save sync Valheim has. There is no manual file to copy on console, so the practical prep on Xbox is simply making sure your cloud save has synced before launch day.
Do this now: Copy your `IronGate\Valheim` folder somewhere safe. It's the only irreplaceable thing in this whole checklist.
Should you start a fresh world or keep your old one?
This is the single most-asked question heading into 1.0, and Iron Gate answers it directly — with a nuance most people miss.
You do not need a new world. From the FAQ: "your world will receive new content even if it was created before the update, although biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored." So an existing world will grow a Deep North — as long as you haven't already sailed into the far-north zones and "baked" them as empty placeholder terrain.
But the studio's own recommendation is to start over: "we always recommend that you start the game over from scratch to get the best possible experience." The reason is that Valheim generates and permanently stores each zone the first time it loads, so a years-old world may carry old placeholder terrain in the north and miss some 1.0 world-generation changes elsewhere.
Here's the decision in plain terms:
| Your situation | Recommended move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New or lightly explored world, north untouched | Keep it | The Deep North will generate cleanly when you sail up there |
| Long-running world, but you never explored the far north | Keep it | Unexplored northern zones still generate the new biome |
| Long-running world, you already sailed into the north | Start fresh (or accept placeholder north) | Explored zones are locked in; the new biome won't overwrite them |
| You want the intended, from-scratch 1.0 experience | Start fresh | Iron Gate's own recommendation |
Can you rush straight to the Deep North on launch day? Technically yes — but Iron Gate again nudges you the other way: "You can, but it's our recommendation that you start over." The Deep North is the final biome; it's balanced for players who've already cleared the Ashlands, so sprinting there with starter gear is a fast way to get flattened. If your goal is to see the new content properly, finish the full boss ladder first.
If you're keeping your world: position a character for the Deep North
If you've decided to carry your world forward, spend the days before launch getting a strong, well-equipped character to the edge of the northern ocean — without crossing into the unexplored far-north zones you want the Deep North to fill.
A practical pre-launch route:
- Make sure your best character has finished the Ashlands and beaten Fader, the seventh boss. The Deep North sits above the Mountain and northern-ocean bands, and the enemies there will be end-game tier. If you're not there yet, use the days before launch to push through — our Ashlands survival guide walks the whole biome and the Fader fight.
- Build or upgrade a portal hub and a coastal outpost near the northern Mountains, so on launch day you can teleport in, grab your ship, and sail north immediately.
- Stock a launch-day loadout: your best armor, a full set of the right weapons for the biome, stacked healing and stamina meads, frost-resistance mead, and a spread of top-tier food. The far north is cold country — frost resistance and health food will matter.
- Leave the far-north sea and coastline unexplored. Don't scout up there "to see what's coming." Every zone you load now is locked as old terrain and may not become Deep North later.
For the deeper mechanics of exactly which zones carry over and which regenerate, we broke that down in the dedicated new-world and save-carryover guide.
Achievements: what changes at 1.0, and the cheat trap
Valheim's 1.0 adds a full achievement system — "a whole bunch of them," per Iron Gate — and there's a timing detail worth knowing before you play.
Achievements track from the moment you install 1.0, not retroactively. The FAQ is blunt: "an achievement connected to killing Eikthyr, for example, will require you to kill Eikthyr again, even if you've already killed him 500 times previously." So if hunting achievements appeals to you, don't be surprised that your veteran character starts the list from zero.
The cheat trap is the part to watch. There is a system that permanently flags any character or world that uses most `devcommands` (like `spawn`) as "permanently locked from getting any achievements." A few commands such as `freefly` are exceptions, but the rule is strict:
- Characters that used cheats before 1.0 are already marked.
- After 1.0 you'll get a confirmation prompt before entering a cheated state, so you can't flag yourself by accident.
- Spawned-in items are marked, and if a clean character picks one up they enter a temporary cheat state — they can become eligible again only after throwing out every cheated item.
- Some world modifiers (like hammer-mode) also block certain achievements and count as temporary cheats.
If you care about the new achievements, use a clean character on a clean or lightly used world for that playthrough, and keep any creative/testing worlds separate.
Mods: don't rush the update, and mind the achievement rule
Valheim's mod scene (BepInEx via Thunderstore) is PC-only and unofficial, and Iron Gate is clear about what that means at launch: "it takes some time for mods to be updated to be compatible with the base game. Since we don't have any official mod support, we cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases." The FAQ also confirms no console mod support and no Steam Workshop for 1.0.
Practical prep for modded players:
- Expect a break. A 1.0 build is a big version jump; most mods will need updates before they load again. Don't count on your modded setup working on day one.
- Keep a vanilla profile ready. If you use r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager, set up a clean, mod-free profile so you can play launch day without waiting on mod authors.
- Remember the achievement flag. A modded state can behave like a cheated state for achievement tracking. If you want the new achievements, play them on a vanilla character.
- One player in this week's community threads summed up the safe approach well: "we won't know exactly how achievements work (mods may disable them and also what settings you choose in the world modifiers) until it releases." When in doubt, go vanilla first, mod later.
Dedicated server owners: back up and be ready to update
If you run a dedicated Valheim server, you have two specific jobs before launch.
1. Copy the server's world file off the box. The same `worlds_local` files apply — grab both the `.db` and `.fwl` for your server world and store them somewhere separate. Iron Gate has not stated whether the Deep North requires anything special server-side at 1.0, so treat a backup as mandatory.
2. Be ready to update the server tool. Valheim Dedicated Server is a free Steam Tool, and it updates alongside the game. When 1.0 drops, the tool will get a new build; your server needs that update before 1.0 clients can connect. A useful, official tip from the dedicated-server guide: on Linux, copy `start_server.sh` and edit the copy — Steam overwrites the original every time the tool updates, so an edited copy protects your launch flags (`-name`, `-port`, `-world`, `-password`, `-public`, `-crossplay`).
3. Note the crossplay question mark. Whether self-hosted dedicated servers accept PS5 and Switch 2 players at 1.0 is not addressed in the official FAQ. Crossplay for peer-to-peer sessions is confirmed ("crossplay between all platforms"), but console-to-dedicated-server behavior isn't spelled out. Don't promise your console friends a slot on your box until it's tested on launch day. For how the crossplay backend works in general, see our crossplay guide.
Console players: what "prep" even means for you
If you're coming in fresh on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2, there's very little to prepare — you're starting on the finished 1.0 game with no legacy world to worry about. Two things to know:
- Crossplay yes, cross-save no. You can play with PC, Xbox, and PS5/Switch 2 friends, but your console save stays on that console. The only cross-save link Valheim has is Xbox↔PC through the Microsoft Store.
- Each platform is a separate purchase. There's no cross-buy; buy it on the storefront you'll play on. Iron Gate's announced 1.0 price is $29.99 (regional differences may apply); per-console pricing and pre-order details for PS5 and Switch 2 were not published as of this writing.
For the platform-specific details we do and don't have, see the PS5 guide and the Switch 2 guide.
What you should NOT do before launch
A few "prep" ideas going around are either pointless or actively harmful:
- Don't switch to the 0.221.13 Public Test branch to "get ahead." It is a test build, not the live game, and Iron Gate confirmed there will be no public test branch for 1.0 — everyone gets the finished version at the same time. Switching branches now just risks an unstable build.
- Don't explore the far north to "scout the Deep North." It's empty placeholder terrain today, and loading those zones can lock them as old terrain so the real biome won't generate there.
- Don't trust "leaked" Deep North maps, boss names, or gear lists. Iron Gate published a launch date and the biome name — not a changelog. Anything claiming to detail the eighth boss or Deep North loot is speculation until 1.0 is live.
- Don't rely on your mod list working. Have a vanilla profile ready.
The final pre-launch checklist
Print this, or just run it down the night before:
- [ ] Backed up the `IronGate\Valheim` folder (worlds + characters) to a second location
- [ ] Decided: keep your world (north unexplored) or start fresh on launch day
- [ ] If keeping: best character has cleared the Ashlands and beaten Fader
- [ ] If keeping: portal hub + coastal outpost staged near the northern Mountains
- [ ] Launch-day loadout stocked: armor, weapons, healing/stamina/frost meads, health food
- [ ] Left the far-north sea and coastline unexplored
- [ ] Vanilla profile ready if you normally play modded
- [ ] Clean character earmarked if you want the new achievements
- [ ] Dedicated server: world file copied off and ready to update the tool
- [ ] Console: know that crossplay works but cross-save doesn't (except Xbox↔PC)
That's it. Valheim's 1.0 launch is designed to be painless for existing players — the studio has bent over backwards to make sure nothing you built is lost. Do the backup, make the fresh-world-or-not call, and stage a character near the north, and you'll be sailing into the Deep North minutes after the servers go live on September 9.
FAQ
Do I need a new world for Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North? No, but Iron Gate recommends one. Old worlds keep working and unexplored areas will generate the Deep North; the studio's FAQ says it "always recommend[s] that you start the game over from scratch to get the best possible experience." If you keep your world, don't explore the far-north zones before launch, because "biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored."
Will I lose my saves or characters when 1.0 launches? No. Iron Gate's FAQ answer to what happens to saves is: "Nothing. Your old saves will still be where you last left them, and you can continue to play with them if you like." Your Early Access copy simply updates to 1.0 — you don't repurchase it. Even so, back up your `IronGate\Valheim` folder before launch as insurance.
Do my old achievements or boss kills carry over to the new achievement system? No. The system tracks statistics only from the moment you install 1.0, so an achievement for killing Eikthyr will require killing him again even if you've already done it hundreds of times. Cheated or spawned-item states permanently lock a character out of achievements, so use a clean character if you want them.
Will my mods work on day one of 1.0? Probably not right away. Valheim has no official mod support, and Iron Gate says it "cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases" — mods typically need updating after a big version jump. Keep a vanilla profile ready, and note there's no console mod support or Steam Workshop.
Should I back up my Valheim world before 1.0? Yes — it's the one job worth doing no matter what. Copy the `IronGate\Valheim` folder (Windows: `%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim`; Linux: `~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim`), which contains your `worlds_local` and `characters_local` files. Do it before September 9 and again right before you first launch 1.0.
Is there a public test branch I can use to play 1.0 early? No. Iron Gate confirmed there will be no Public Test Branch for 1.0: "We want everyone to get to experience 1.0 at the same time!" The current 0.221.13 build on the Public Test branch is an ordinary test patch, not an early 1.0 — the live default game is still 0.221.12.
