Applies as of Valheim patch 0.221.12 (default branch, released February 19, 2026). Valheim is still in Early Access on PC and Xbox today — the PlayStation 5 version does not exist yet. It launches with the full 1.0 release on Tuesday, September 9, 2026. Every fact below is taken from Iron Gate's official 1.0 FAQ, the Valheim news feed, the Steam news feed for app 892970, or the live PlayStation Store listing, all re-verified on August 28, 2026. Anything Iron Gate has not published is flagged as unconfirmed rather than guessed.
Quick answer: everything PS5 players need to know
Valheim launches on PlayStation 5 on September 9, 2026 — the same day it leaves Early Access as version 1.0. It will cost $29.99 (Iron Gate's stated price, with regional variation), it is a roughly 4.3GiB download, it supports full crossplay with PC, Xbox and Switch 2, and it supports 1-10 players online. There is no cross-save between PS5 and PC — Iron Gate has confirmed save syncing only between Xbox and PC. There is no split-screen or couch co-op, and mods are not supported. As of August 28, 2026 the PlayStation Store page is live but shows no price and no pre-order button.

This is the first PlayStation release of Valheim in the game's history. The game entered Early Access on February 2, 2021 and has spent more than five years PC-only, then PC-and-Xbox — so if you are reading this on a PS5, there is genuinely no back catalogue of PlayStation-specific Valheim guidance. Here is what is actually confirmed.
When does Valheim release on PS5?
September 9, 2026. Iron Gate AB announced the date in the news post "Valheim Has A Release Date!" on valheimgame.com, mirrored to the Steam news feed for app 892970 on June 7, 2026. The PS5 version is not a later port — it ships simultaneously with the 1.0 launch on every other platform.
| The official announcement lists the 1.0 platform spread as "PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S" plus new PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ restates it more precisely: |
|---|
"Valheim will also be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, for purchase in these platforms' respective digital storefronts."
— Iron Gate AB, official Valheim 1.0 FAQ
That last clause matters: each platform is a separate purchase. Owning Valheim on Steam does not grant you the PS5 version, and no cross-buy programme has been announced.
The date has not moved. The most recent official communication, "Word from the Devs: Almost there…" (August 20, 2026), has the team "gearing up for the 1.0 release in September, fixing some final bugs," and promised a new trailer premiering at Gamescom in Cologne — a Deep North animated trailer duly surfaced in the days after. Checked against the Steam news feed on August 28, 2026, there is still no patch newer than 0.221.12 and no delay announcement.
How much does Valheim cost on PS5, and can you pre-order it?
Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ gives one number:
"Valheim will receive a new price of $29.99 (though there may be regional differences)."
— Iron Gate AB, official Valheim 1.0 FAQ
The Steam listing for app 892970 already shows $29.99 in the US as of August 28, 2026, so $29.99 is the realistic expectation for the PlayStation Store too — but note carefully that Iron Gate has not published a PS5-specific price, and console pricing is set per storefront.
On pre-orders: the PlayStation Store concept page for Valheim is live, and it currently displays "Releases on: 2026" with no date, no price and no pre-order button (verified by direct check on August 28, 2026). So the honest answer to "can I pre-order Valheim on PS5 right now?" is no, not yet. If you want it on day one, the practical move is to follow the store page and check back closer to September 9.
One frequently-asked companion question, answered while we are here: existing PC and Xbox owners are not charged again. The FAQ is explicit that Early Access copies update to 1.0 at no extra cost. That upgrade is per-platform, though — it does not extend to a PS5 copy.
Does Valheim have crossplay between PS5 and PC?
Yes. The FAQ answer is one sentence and leaves no ambiguity:
"Yes, Valheim will support crossplay between all platforms."
— Iron Gate AB, official Valheim 1.0 FAQ
So a PS5 player, a Steam player, an Xbox player and a Switch 2 player can share one world. Crossplay is not new to Valheim in principle — it has connected PC and Xbox since the Xbox launch on March 14, 2023 — but 1.0 is the first time PlayStation and Nintendo hardware joins that pool.
The party size is unchanged: "Just like it is now, Valheim 1.0 will be a game for 1-10 players." Ten is the ceiling, not a per-platform allowance.
Two practical caveats for PS5 specifically:
- PlayStation Plus is required for online play. The PlayStation Store listing states online multiplayer needs a PS Plus subscription, and lists "10 online players." Your PC friends do not need any equivalent subscription — this cost falls on the console players.
- Console dedicated-server support is unconfirmed. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ does not address whether PS5 players can connect to a self-hosted dedicated server, and no official page states it either way. Do not plan a launch-night server around it until Iron Gate confirms. If you are the one hosting for the group, our Valheim dedicated server guide covers the PC side, including the `-crossplay` flag that switches the server to the crossplay backend.
Is there cross-save between PS5 and PC?
No — and this is the single most important thing to understand before you buy. This is where crossplay and cross-save get confused, and the FAQ draws a hard line:
"If you are playing on an Xbox, you will be able to access your saves from a PC, provided that you launch the game from the Microsoft store. Beyond this, there will be no cross platform sync for your save files."
— Iron Gate AB, official Valheim 1.0 FAQ
Read that carefully. Save syncing exists only between Xbox and PC, and only through the Microsoft Store version. PlayStation 5 is covered by "beyond this" — meaning:
- Your PS5 character and worlds stay on your PS5.
- You cannot start on PS5 and continue the same character on your PC, or vice versa.
- Buying on both platforms gives you two entirely separate save universes.
Crossplay and cross-save are different features: crossplay lets you play together in the same session; cross-save lets your progress travel between your own devices. Valheim 1.0 has the first, and for PS5, not the second.
The practical workaround is the one Valheim groups have always used: whoever hosts the world owns the save. If your friends play on PC and you are on PS5, join their world and your character progresses inside it — characters are stored separately from worlds, so your PS5 character keeps its skills wherever it visits. What cannot move is the world file itself, and your PS5 character cannot be lifted onto a PC install.
What do PS5 players actually get on day one?
Everything, in one purchase. PS5 does not launch on a cut-down build — you get the complete 1.0 game:
- All eight biomes, ending with the Deep North, the game's final biome and the headline addition in 1.0.
- The full boss ladder: Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen and Fader, plus whatever the Deep North adds. (Iron Gate has not published the eighth boss's name or stats, so treat any list claiming otherwise as speculation.)
- Five years of accumulated updates — Hearth & Home, Mistlands, Hildir's Request, Ashlands, The Bog Witch and the Call to Arms combat overhaul — all in the box.
- Achievements. The FAQ confirms 1.0 adds "numerous achievements," tracked from 1.0 onward. Iron Gate has not specified how these surface as PlayStation trophies, so don't assume a platinum list until the store page updates.
- No DLC, no battle pass, no microtransactions. Valheim has held a single price point with no paid add-ons since 2021. A PS5 purchase is the whole game.
Download size, straight from the FAQ:
"Valheim 1.0 will be about 4.3GiB in size to download on most platforms. Xbox One will be slightly smaller at around 3.0GiB, while the Mac AppStore and Microsoft Store versions will be about 6.5GiB in size."
— Iron Gate AB, official Valheim 1.0 FAQ
PS5 falls under "most platforms," so budget roughly 4.3GiB — small enough to download on launch morning without drama.
If you have never played, the ladder ahead of you is long: each boss drops the material that unlocks the next crafting tier, which is what lets you survive the next biome. Our Valheim boss order guide lays out that sequence, and the beginner's guide covers your first few hours.
Does Valheim have split-screen or couch co-op on PS5?
No. Valheim has never shipped local split-screen on any platform — not on PC, not on Xbox — and Iron Gate has not announced it for the PS5 version. All multiplayer is online: you either join a friend's hosted world or connect to a dedicated server. The PlayStation Store listing reflects this exactly, showing "1 player" for local play and "10 online players" for multiplayer.
If two people in one house want to play together, you need two consoles (or one console and one PC) and two copies. There is no supported way around it.
What PS5 features does Valheim support?
From the live PlayStation Store listing, verified August 28, 2026:
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| DualSense haptics & adaptive triggers | Supported ("vibration function and trigger effect") |
| Remote Play | Supported |
| Online players | 10 (PS Plus required) |
| Local players | 1 |
| Rating | ESRB Teen — Blood, Crude Humor, Use of Alcohol, Violence |
| Developer / publisher | Iron Gate AB / Coffee Stain Publishing AB |
Not listed and therefore not confirmed: PS5 Pro enhancements, resolution and frame-rate targets, VRR/120Hz support, a physical release, and whether the game appears in any PlayStation subscription tier. Iron Gate has published none of these, so treat any spec sheet you see circulating as unverified.
One more confirmed limitation that matters if you are coming from the PC scene: mods will not be available. The FAQ states, "Since we don't have any official mod support, we cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases." The PC mod stack (BepInEx via Thunderstore) has always been unofficial and PC-only. On PS5 you are playing pure vanilla — which, for a first playthrough, is how the progression is balanced anyway.
Should you buy on PS5 or PC?
If you own both, the deciding factor is not performance — it is what your friends play and whether you care about mods and servers.
- Buy on PS5 if: your co-op group is on console, you want DualSense feedback and Remote Play, and you are happy playing vanilla. Crossplay means being on PS5 does not cut you off from PC friends.
- Buy on PC if: you want mods, you want to run your own dedicated server, or you want your save to be portable and backed up by hand. PC is also the only route to the Xbox↔PC save sync via the Microsoft Store.
- Do not buy both expecting to share progress — there is no cross-save between them.
For a wider read on whether to jump in now or hold for launch day, we broke that down in should you play Valheim now or wait for 1.0. PS5 players don't have that choice — September 9 is your earliest entry point — but it explains what 1.0 changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Valheim coming to PS5? September 9, 2026, alongside the 1.0 release on every other platform. Iron Gate confirmed the date on valheimgame.com and the Steam news feed on June 7, 2026, and re-affirmed the September window in the "Word from the Devs: Almost there…" post on August 20, 2026. It is the first PlayStation release of Valheim ever.
How much will Valheim cost on PS5? Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ states a new price of "$29.99 (though there may be regional differences)." A PS5-specific price has not been published, and as of August 28, 2026 the PlayStation Store page shows no price at all.
Can I pre-order Valheim on PS5? Not as of August 28, 2026. The PlayStation Store concept page is live but displays only "Releases on: 2026" — no date, no price and no pre-order option. Check the store page again closer to launch.
Does Valheim have crossplay between PS5 and PC? Yes. The official FAQ says, "Yes, Valheim will support crossplay between all platforms." A PS5 player can share a world with PC, Xbox and Switch 2 players, up to the standard 1-10 player cap. You will need PlayStation Plus for online play.
Can I transfer my PC Valheim save to PS5? No. Iron Gate confirmed save syncing only between Xbox and PC via the Microsoft Store, adding that "beyond this, there will be no cross platform sync for your save files." PS5 saves stay on PS5. You can still join a PC friend's world through crossplay — you just can't move the save itself.
Does Valheim have split-screen co-op on PS5? No. Valheim has never supported local split-screen on any platform, and none has been announced for PS5. The store listing shows 1 local player and 10 online players — everyone needs their own system and copy.
Will Valheim have mods or dedicated servers on PS5? Mods, no — the FAQ says there is no official mod support and no guarantee mods will work at all, and the PC mod stack is PC-only. Console dedicated-server support is simply not addressed in any Iron Gate document, so it is unconfirmed; don't build launch plans around it.
How big is the Valheim download on PS5? About 4.3GiB. The FAQ gives ~4.3GiB for most platforms, ~3.0GiB on Xbox One, and ~6.5GiB for the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store builds.
