WARDOGS Season 1 XP Curve: Why Leveling Is So Much Slower at Launch

WARDOGS went live in Steam Early Access on 10 September 2026 at 16:00 UTC, and within the first day it peaked at 287,441 concurrent players (SteamDB, syndicated into the official Steam news feed on 10 September; a live read of Steam's own player-count API returned the identical figure). If you jumped in at launch and it feels like your level bar has barely moved, you are not imagining it. BULKHEAD rewrote the whole XP curve for the launch build, and the middle levels are now dramatically slower than they were in the beta.

This guide breaks down exactly what changed, using the real numbers from the launch patch notes — the "Pre-Load Live & Season 1 Changelog," posted to Steam on 9 September 2026 at 22:46 UTC, which is the patch notes for the build everyone is playing right now. WARDOGS publishes no numeric version string, so "Season 1" is the version you should anchor to.

Quick answer: In WARDOGS Season 1, XP requirements were increased most sharply between levels 10 and 20 — reaching level 20 now costs 250,000 XP versus 111,500 in the beta, about 124% more — and the curve was flattened from level 35 up. BULKHEAD's stated goal is that median players (20–25 hours in) sit around level 20, while the "top-ticket" unlocks are reserved for the grinding top 5%. Reaching level 50 on a role track now takes 1,000,000 XP. Read on for the full band-by-band table, what it means for time-to-tank, and how the level-plus-Cash unlock system actually works.

Applies to: WARDOGS Season 1 (Steam Early Access launch build), verified 10 September 2026. WARDOGS is one word — do not confuse it with the 2016 film "War Dogs." It is a 100-player, three-team Control Zone FPS, not a battle royale or an extraction shooter.

What actually changed in the Season 1 XP curve

BULKHEAD explained the redesign in plain language in the launch changelog. Their words, verbatim:

"Looking at the data we have decided to slow levels down around 10 to 20, and flatten the curve from 35 onward. This means our median players, at 20 to 25 hours, will be around level 20, and those wanting the big ticket items, the top 5%, will need to grind. Artillery moves to Career 90 and Heavy Tank to Driver 35."

There are three moving parts in that quote, and each one changes how your session feels:

  • Levels 10–20 got much steeper. This is the wall most new players hit in their first few evenings.
  • The curve flattens from 35 onward. High levels are still expensive, but the per-level jump stops accelerating the way it did in the beta.
  • Big-ticket unlocks moved deeper. The Artillery Tank is now a Career level 90 unlock and the Heavy Tank sits at Driver level 35 — so "when do I get a tank" has a very different answer than it did a week ago.

The full Season 1 XP band table (beta vs launch)

These are the actual published numbers from the 9 September changelog. Everything below level 6 is unchanged; the table is for the role tracks (Medic, Support, Driver, Pilot, Recon and the general Career track).

LevelBeta XPSeason 1 XPChange
Below 6Unchanged
68,7509,250+5.7%
1025,00035,000+40.0%
1554,750110,000+100.9%
20111,500250,000+124.2%
25192,000325,000+69.3%
30293,750400,000+36.2%
35416,500500,000+20.0%
40551,250650,000+17.9%
45689,500800,000+16.0%
50838,0001,000,000+19.3%

The pattern is obvious once it is laid out: the biggest percentage jumps are stacked at levels 15 and 20 (roughly doubling and more-than-doubling the requirement), then the increases shrink to the high teens from level 35 up. That is exactly the "slow 10–20, flatten from 35" design BULKHEAD described. The reason level 20 feels like a brick wall is that it genuinely costs more than twice what it did in the beta.

Important honesty note: the table stops at level 50 = 1,000,000 XP because that is where BULKHEAD's published table ends — it is not a confirmed level cap. No level cap has been published anywhere for WARDOGS. In fact Career levels demonstrably run well past 50, because the Artillery Tank unlock now sits at Career 90. Anyone telling you the "class cap is 50" or "150" is guessing.

How leveling actually works: the two-gate system

The single most common misunderstanding at launch is treating WARDOGS like a game where hitting a level hands you an item. It does not. Every meaningful unlock has two gates:

  • A level on the relevant track — this makes the item available to buy at the in-match vendor.
  • Enough Cash — this is the per-life purchase price you pay to actually take the item into a fight.

XP unlocks access; Cash pays. And because Cash is spent per life, losing that shiny vehicle when you die does not un-unlock it — you simply buy it again next spawn (if you can afford it). This is why leveling and money-making are two separate grinds in WARDOGS, and why a high level with an empty wallet still leaves you playing with a rifle.

You earn XP the same way you earn Cash: by playing the objective. Every player starts each account with $10,000, and BULKHEAD's design deliberately rewards teamplay over raw kills — the store page states that "every teamplay action you perform rewards cash," listing reviving squadmates, transporting friendlies to the zone, and controlling the objective. The shifting Hot Zone inside the Control Zone pays double Cash and counts double toward zone control, so it is both the best XP and the best money on the map.

"When do I get a tank?" — time-to-big-ticket in Season 1

This is the question the new curve was explicitly built around. The two headline vehicles moved in Season 1:

  • Heavy Tank → Driver level 35 (moved off the Career track).
  • Artillery Tank → Career level 90 (up from Career 55), and its vendor price rose from $400,000 to $500,000.

Pair that with the XP table and you can see the intent: getting a role track to level 35 alone is a 500,000 XP climb, and Career 90 is far beyond the published table. The community framing that has circulated since launch — that during actual launch "players will not see a tank for weeks" — lines up with the math. BULKHEAD wants the top-tier armor to read as an achievement, which is exactly why they said the "top 5% will need to grind."

A few other Season 1 vendor prices shifted at the same time (these are launch values, per the 9 September changelog):

ItemTrackBeta priceSeason 1 price
Forward Operating BaseVendor$2,500$7,500
Artillery TankCareer$400,000$500,000
Little Bird with minigunsPilot$25,000$50,000
Z20 LakotaPilot$50,000$35,000
URALDriver$50,000$35,000
Dune BuggyDriver$35,000$25,000

Note that some transport vehicles actually got cheaper in Season 1 — the Z20 Lakota and URAL both dropped to $35,000 and the Dune Buggy fell to $25,000 — because BULKHEAD "rejigged Driver to give a satisfying escalation through attack vehicles." So the grind is not uniformly harsher: early transport is more accessible, while the marquee war machines are pushed further out.

A handful of confirmed Season 1 unlock levels

Beyond the tanks, the changelog names specific unlock levels. These are the only official gate numbers that exist right now — treat any "complete unlock list" you see elsewhere with suspicion, because BULKHEAD has not published the full weapon or vehicle roster.

  • Career: Sports Parachute 35, Large Backpack 55, 762x54mm AP ammo 82, 556mm AP ammo 83, Deagle 85, Artillery Tank 90.
  • Medic: PP-19 50-round drum magazine 29. (The defibrillator unlocks at Medic 11, per PC Gamer's hands-on — a beta-era figure.)
  • Support: Large Hammer 8.
  • Driver: URAL 3, Kodiak Assault 6, Dune Buggy 8, Kodiak Flatbed 10, Large Supply Crate 16, URAL Attack 25, Humvee with minigun 30, Heavy Tank 35.

Does progression reset? Season 1 is temporary

Yes — and this matters for how you value the grind. BULKHEAD has confirmed the seasonal reset mechanic in a devlog:

"At the end of a season, your cash and XP progression will reset with your cash auto converted into gold bars… Your gold bars and cosmetics from a season will stay permanently on your account across seasons."

In other words: your levels and Cash are season-scoped — they will reset — while your Gold Bars and cosmetics are permanent. BULKHEAD has also said "each season we will have a different XP curve with different item orders," so the exact table above is a Season 1 artifact and will change. Crucially, no season start date, end date, or length has been published, so nobody can tell you how long you have. Anyone quoting a "Season 1 ends on [date]" is inventing it.

Save the grind: hand-leveling from timesaver.gg

The Season 1 curve is designed to make the middle levels a genuine time sink — median players are meant to be around level 20 after 20–25 hours, and the big unlocks sit far beyond that. If you would rather spend your play sessions in the fights that are fun instead of farming the level-15-to-20 wall, our team can push your WARDOG progression for you, hand-played by real people — no bots, no generators.

Short on time for the launch grind? We handle the slow middle of the Season 1 curve so you land on the unlocks you actually want.

  • WARDOGS Account Leveling — push your overall WARDOG career level hand-played, pick your target level, no bots.
  • WARDOGS Class Leveling — level a specific track (Driver for the Heavy Tank, Medic, Support, Pilot, Recon) to the gate you need.
  • WARDOGS Cash — hand-farmed Cash, the currency that pays for every loadout you take out and every unlock your level opens up.
  • All WARDOGS services — career and class leveling, Cash farming, and more.

Every timesaver.gg WARDOGS order is hand-played by our specialists and backed by our own delivery guarantee and refund policy. A quick note on the rules: WARDOGS is a live-service game with a kernel-level anti-cheat (listed on Steam as Elytra) and an everplay group plc EULA, and progression is tied to your Steam account — so we are upfront that any progression service carries risk that you accept, and we describe only what we control: our handling, our guarantee, and our support. We do not sell WARDOGS accounts.

FAQ

Why does leveling feel so slow in WARDOGS right now? Because BULKHEAD deliberately steepened the XP curve for the Season 1 launch build. The requirements to reach levels 10–20 were increased the most — reaching level 20 now costs 250,000 XP versus 111,500 in the beta, about 124% more — and the curve was flattened above level 35. Their stated aim is for median players to be around level 20 after 20–25 hours.

How much XP does it take to reach level 50 in WARDOGS? On a role track, level 50 requires 1,000,000 XP in Season 1, up from 838,000 XP in the beta (+19.3%). Note that level 50 is where BULKHEAD's published table ends, not a confirmed level cap — Career levels run past 90.

Is there a level cap in WARDOGS? No level cap has been published anywhere — not on the Steam store page, not in the API, not in any announcement. The XP table stops at level 50, but Career unlocks demonstrably exist as high as level 90 (the Artillery Tank). Any specific "cap" number you see is unverified.

When can I get a tank in WARDOGS? In Season 1 the Heavy Tank unlocks at Driver level 35 and the Artillery Tank at Career level 90, so both are deep-grind unlocks. Community and dev-adjacent framing at launch is that most players "will not see a tank for weeks." Remember the two-gate rule: you also need the Cash to buy it (the Artillery Tank costs $500,000 at the vendor in Season 1).

Do my level and Cash reset each season? Yes. BULKHEAD has confirmed that at the end of a season your Cash and XP progression reset, with your banked Cash auto-converted into Gold Bars. Gold Bars and cosmetics are permanent across seasons. No season end date has been published.

Does WARDOGS have classes I level up separately? WARDOGS has six progression tracks named in the launch patch notes — Career, Medic, Support, Driver, Pilot and Recon — and you earn XP on each based on the loadout items you use. There is no confirmed "Assault" track; general infantry unlocks sit on Career. BULKHEAD has never published a single clean labelled list of all six, so treat any confident "six-class table" elsewhere as guesswork.

Did anything get faster in Season 1? Yes — some early Driver vehicles got cheaper (the Z20 Lakota and URAL both dropped to $35,000) and the Driver track was reworked for a smoother escalation. The grind mainly bites in the middle levels and on the marquee big-ticket unlocks, not on early transport.
