Mongolian rivals 5star eSports beat them 2-0 in the Group A lower-bracket quarter-final on 9 September, sending one of the tournament's most recognisable names home as the first team eliminated, before the event had even reached its third day. It caps a miserable trip to Suzhou for a roster that arrived with a stand-in already in the line-up.
The 16-team S-Tier event at the SND Cultural & Sports Centre — advertised at $1,250,000, with a published $1,000,000 prize breakdown — completed its opening round of group play late on 8 September, the final match of the night running into the early hours of 9 September as Astralis edged G2 Esports 2-1. Day 1 results: Group A
Every opening match across both groups was a best-of-three.

The Astralis win was the pick of the day: having taken Ancient comfortably, the Danes lost a double-overtime Mirage before closing out Inferno 13-5 to drop G2 into the lower bracket. MIBR's win over The MongolZ was the other headline, its Inferno decider going to overtime at 12-12 before MIBR took four straight rounds.

Alliance's clean sweep of FaZe was the upset of the opening day, the Swedish side taking Ancient and Nuke without needing a decider. GamerLegion pushed FURIA to three maps while playing with Grashog standing in for Snax, who Liquipedia lists as absent because of travel complications. magic are themselves a late addition: they replaced FUT Esports, who withdrew on 29 August over visa issues.
The MongolZ crash out

The MongolZ came to Suzhou with cobrazera standing in for Techno4K, a change we covered when the field was locked at the start of the month. It did not work. After losing the Inferno decider to MIBR on day one, they fell into the lower bracket and ran straight into 5star, the fellow Mongolian side that claimed the final slot at the event by beating Chinggis Warriors in the Asia closed qualifier.
No decider was needed. Because the group is a double-elimination GSL bracket, a lower-bracket quarter-final defeat is terminal. The MongolZ leave Suzhou with one map win to their name: the Ancient they took off MIBR on the opening day.

At the time of writing, magic and FaZe are level at 1-1 in their Group B lower-bracket quarter-final, with magic taking Ancient 16-14 in overtime and FaZe answering 13-10 on Dust II. The Cache decider is in progress; the loser is eliminated and joins The MongolZ on the flight home.

Format and what qualification looks like
The group stage runs 8-10 September as two eight-team double-elimination (GSL) groups, every match a best-of-three. Three teams advance from each group, and where you finish decides how deep into the playoff bracket you start:
- Group winners go straight to the semi-finals
- Group runners-up enter the quarter-finals as high seeds
- Third-placed teams enter the quarter-finals as low seeds
Playoffs run 11-13 September as a single-elimination bracket. Everything is a best-of-three except the grand final, which is a best-of-five. The map pool is Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage and Nuke.

This is the third Playground event and the first held in China, landing two days after BLAST Open Porto wrapped up — Spirit beat MOUZ in that grand final on 6 September.
