What changed: Season 24 is a full LAN event
The headline change is structural rather than competitive. Season 23 ran its opening stages online and moved only the eight-team playoffs to an arena. Season 24 brings every match to LAN, and two things shrink with it: the field drops from the 24 teams of recent editions to 16, and ESL describes the result as a two-week event rather than the three of recent seasons.
ESL announced the format change in November 2025, so the 16-team LAN structure has been known since well before the season. The practical effect is a shorter, denser tournament in which every team is on site from its first match.

The all-best-of-three Swiss stage is not new — ESL has run recent Pro League seasons the same way — so no team gets a best-of-one cushion in the opening rounds.

The 16-team field is already complete. Twelve teams were invited off the global Valve Regional Standings, and four came through ESL Challenger League Season 51 regional qualifiers.
Invited via the global VRS (12): Team Spirit, Team Falcons, MOUZ, 9z Team, Team Vitality, Natus Vincere, Legacy, FURIA, BetBoom Team, Aurora Gaming, G2 Esports and PARIVISION.

Two of those teams arrive changed since their last outings. Legacy won FISSURE Playground 3 on 13 September, beating G2 in the final. PARIVISION benched Vyacheslav "slaxejezzz" Vinokurov and signed Abay "HObbit" Khassenov on 17 September, so Katowice is an early look at that lineup.

The $1,000,000 pool is split between the organisation and the players. ESL's published breakdown lists:

Why Katowice matters for the Major
Season 24 is one of the last events that can move a team's ranking before Major qualification closes. All 32 invitations to the PGL Major in Singapore are drawn from a single Valve Regional Standings snapshot published on Monday 2 November, and there is no open qualifier route in. The only fallback is a last-chance regional qualifier, used if a region runs out of eligible rosters.
That leaves a narrow window. ESL Pro League Season 24 is followed by the Thunderpick World Championship and PGL Masters Bucharest, and those three are the last S-Tier events that can move a team's VRS position before the snapshot is taken.
