For nine months, the Kowakujō main quest has been the wall a lot of Black Ops 7 Zombies players hit and never climbed. The Nekomancer build, the 11-lantern relay, the Onryo, and the Nyxara boss fight punish weak loadouts — and until now there was no easy way in. That changes on July 23, 2026: Season 05 adds Kowakujō Directed Mode, the guided, round-capped version of the Easter Egg that finally lets solo and casual players complete the story.
This guide covers exactly what Directed Mode is, when it goes live, how it changes the Kowakujō run, a step overview so you know what's coming, and the fastest way to clear the whole quest without wiping at round 30. Every fact here is verified against the official Call of Duty Season 05 blog and the Call of Duty Wiki Directed Mode page.

Quick answer: Kowakujō Directed Mode at a glance
TL;DR — Kowakujō Directed Mode launches with Black Ops 7 Season 05 on July 23, 2026 at 9AM PT. It's a guided version of the Kowakujō main quest that marks every Easter Egg step as an on-screen objective and enforces a maximum round cap of 15, so enemies never scale out of control while you complete steps. You select it from the map's Starting Room menu. It's built for solo players and anyone who couldn't finish standard Kowakujō — you still build the Nekomancer Wonder Weapon and complete all six phases, but with waypoints and no high-round pressure.
The official Season 05 roadmap lists it plainly. Per the Call of Duty blog: "Kowakujō Directed Mode, Starting Room: Benefit from extra guidance on the Main Quest as Directed Mode comes to Kowakujō." In other words, the hardest solvable quest in BO7 Zombies is about to become beatable for everyone.
What is Directed Mode in Black Ops 7 Zombies?
Directed Mode is a lower-pressure version of a Zombies map built around one goal: completing the main quest (the Easter Egg) with guidance. It first appeared in Black Ops 6 and carries into Black Ops 7. The in-game description sums it up: "Complete story quests with guidance and a maximum round cap of 15."
Two things make it work:
- Every step is marked as an objective. Historically, Zombies Easter Eggs were fully hidden — you found them by interacting with every set piece or following a YouTube guide step-by-step. Directed Mode surfaces each step as an on-screen objective marker, so you always know what to do next.
- A round cap removes the difficulty spike. Directed Mode holds the game at a maximum of round 15. You can farm points and move between Easter Egg parts without the round climbing into the 30s and 40s where hordes and elites overwhelm a solo player. As Game Rant notes, the cap lets players "collect points and move between parts of the Easter egg without advancing to higher rounds and the increased difficulty and enemy frequency that they entail."
The trade-off is intentional: Directed Mode is about finishing the story, not chasing a high-round or a speedrun leaderboard. If you want the pure, uncapped challenge, standard mode is still there. For most players who just want to see the Kowakujō ending and grab the reward, Directed Mode is the answer.
When does Kowakujō Directed Mode release?
Kowakujō Directed Mode goes live at the Season 05 launch: Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 9AM PT / 12PM ET / 5PM BST, across all platforms, per the official Call of Duty blog. It is not available before then — Kowakujō launched back in Season 04 Reloaded as a hardcore, standard-only run, and Directed Mode is one of the new S05 Zombies additions (alongside the frozen Eidskallen Lighthouse Survival map).
You access it from the Starting Room — Directed Mode is a selectable option when you load into Kowakujō, not a separate playlist you queue for.
How does Directed Mode change the Kowakujō Easter Egg?
The quest steps are the same; the experience around them is completely different. Here's the side-by-side:
| Element | Standard Kowakujō | Kowakujō Directed Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Easter Egg steps | Hidden — need a guide or memory | Marked as on-screen objectives |
| Round progression | Uncapped — scales into round 30–50+ | Capped at round 15 |
| Enemy pressure | High; elites stack on long steps | Managed; no runaway hordes |
| Best for | Speedruns, high-round, bragging rights | Solo/casual completion, learning the run |
| Nekomancer required | Yes | Yes |
| Completion reward | Operator skin + Calling Card | Same completion reward |
The biggest practical win is the round cap. In standard Kowakujō, the run collapses because the 11-lantern relay or the Fox Mask evidence phase drags you into rounds where a single elite ends the game. With the cap at 15, you get room to breathe on every step.
How to complete the Kowakujō main quest in Directed Mode (step overview)
The six phases are unchanged — Directed Mode just guides you through them. Here's the sequence so you know what's ahead. For the full detailed walkthrough of each phase, see our Kowakujō Zombies map & Easter Egg guide.
- Unlock Pack-a-Punch. Capture two Wards (Training Area + Kitchens), clear the Gate Glyphs in Central Courtyard, beat the Oni in the War Room for Shogun's Hanko, then open Shogun's Sanctum.
- Build the Nekomancer Wonder Weapon. Craft the Maneki-Neko, follow the cat paw prints, throw it into the lava to spawn an Abomination, then rescue the cat at the World Seed. This is the longest phase — the Nekomancer is a hard requirement for the next step.
- Light 11 Lanterns. Use the Nekomancer's Spirit Bolt to light all 11 lanterns in quick succession. Mark them before you start; the sequence resets if you're too slow.
- Fox Mask evidence puzzle. Collect the evidence sets and solve the murder case to trigger the next phase.
- Defeat the Onryo. A mid-boss — your Pack-a-Punched Nekomancer melts it.
- Boss fight: Nyxara. Travel to Nyxara's Run and win to complete the Easter Egg.
A first-time standard run takes roughly 2–3 hours; experienced players clear it in under 90 minutes. In Directed Mode, expect the middle — the objective markers save you the trial-and-error, and the round cap saves you the wipes.
Directed Mode tip that catches people out: because rounds are capped at 15, you have less zombie kills per minute to earn points and Essence. Rush Pack-a-Punch and start building the Nekomancer early — don't sit on cash. Bring GobbleGums that boost points or self-revive so a bad moment on the Onryo or Nyxara fight doesn't cost you the whole run.

What rewards do you get for completing Kowakujō?
Finishing the Kowakujō main quest — in standard or Directed Mode — awards the map's exclusive Operator skin and Calling Card, plus the satisfaction of closing out one of BO7's toughest Easter Eggs. Directed Mode exists specifically so more players can earn these, so the completion reward carries over.
Two things Directed Mode does not hand you:
- The Nekomancer still has to be built. There's no shortcut around the Wonder Weapon — you build it the same way, guided.
- High-round and speedrun bragging rights live in standard mode. If your goal is a leaderboard time or a deep round, you'll run it uncapped.
Best prep before July 23
The single biggest reason Kowakujō runs fail — even in Directed Mode — is going in under-leveled. The Oni, the Onryo, and Nyxara all punish weak loadouts, and a capped round count means less time to build economy mid-match. Sort this before launch:
| Prep step | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Level your best primary high | Higher weapon tiers + Pack-a-Punch keep you alive at the boss steps |
| Stock strong GobbleGums | The right gums turn a wipe into a clean run on long steps |
| Account / Battle Pass leveled | Faster access to gear, loadout slots, and S05 event progress |
| A tuned solo build or a duo | Directed Mode is solo-friendly, but a partner splits fetch quests |
If your account isn't there yet, it's faster to level your weapons and account first than to wipe five times learning the boss. For the fastest pre-launch XP routes, see our BO7 Zombies XP farm guide, and for the new S05 Survival map, our Eidskallen Lighthouse guide.
Get Kowakujō done without the grind
Directed Mode makes the quest doable — but "doable" and "done" aren't the same when you're short on time or still hit a wall at Nyxara. If you want the Operator skin and Calling Card without spending your weekend on it, our team runs it for you:
- CoD Zombies Easter Egg & Boss Carry — full main-quest completion, expert Zombies players, manual & secure

FAQ
When does Kowakujō Directed Mode release in Black Ops 7? Kowakujō Directed Mode launches with Black Ops 7 Season 05 on July 23, 2026 at 9AM PT across all platforms, per the official Call of Duty blog. It was not available before Season 05 — Kowakujō originally launched in Season 04 Reloaded as a standard-only run.
Does Directed Mode let you earn the Kowakujō Easter Egg rewards? Yes. Completing the main quest in Directed Mode awards the same completion rewards as standard mode — the map's exclusive Operator skin and Calling Card. Directed Mode exists so more players can finish the story and claim them.
What is the round cap in Directed Mode? Directed Mode enforces a maximum round cap of 15, per the in-game description. That keeps enemy difficulty manageable so you can move between Easter Egg steps without being overwhelmed by high-round hordes.
Can you play Kowakujō Directed Mode solo? Yes — it's designed for solo and casual players. Every step is marked as an on-screen objective and the round cap removes the difficulty spike that makes standard Kowakujō so brutal alone. A partner still helps split the fetch-quest steps.
Do you still need the Nekomancer Wonder Weapon in Directed Mode? Yes. The Nekomancer is a hard requirement for the main quest — you use it to light the 11 lanterns — so you build it the same way in Directed Mode, just with guidance and no round pressure.
Is Directed Mode easier than standard Kowakujō? Much easier to complete, yes: objectives are marked and rounds are capped at 15. It's not meant for high-round or speedrun challenge — those stay in standard mode. Directed Mode is purely about finishing the story quest.
