Last checked October 24, 2026 (launch day +1), against Infinity Ward's MW4 Launch Patch Notes, the official MW4 Progression and Prestige blog and the official Modern Warfare 4 Trello board. Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, 2026. Season 1, which brings MW4 into Warzone, starts November 6.

TL;DR: why is my MW4 camo challenge not tracking?
In most cases the challenge is working. It just isn't counting what you think it counts. The most common causes: (1) the challenge isn't unlocked yet (Special camo challenges open at a set Weapon Level, and Gold needs all 8 Military and 3 Special camos first); (2) you're getting the wrong kill type (Multiplayer counts player kills, DMZ counts enemy kills at higher totals, and DMZ AI don't count for Backstab challenges); (3) you hit a class gate (Platinum needs every Gold in that weapon class, Harmonic Break needs Platinum on all 33 weapons); (4) you're playing Warzone, which doesn't join the shared camo grind until Season 1 on November 6. Real bugs exist too. Military camos relocked after Weapon Prestige, and several requirement texts were wrong. Infinity Ward says the launch update fixed both, so update and restart the game first.
Key numbers from Infinity Ward's official pages:
- 8 Military camos and 3 Special camos per weapon. You need all 11 before the Gold challenge opens.
- 33 weapons at launch. Harmonic Break needs Platinum on all 33, and Divergence needs 33 Harmonic Break completions.
- 15 eliminations in one Multiplayer match for Gold, versus 100 in one DMZ match.
- 250 matches with 10+ kills for Mercurial Drift, the first Multiplayer Mastery camo.
Is MW4 camo tracking actually broken right now?
Partly, but less than the complaints suggest. On launch day, Infinity Ward shipped a launch update with two camo fixes in its UI/UX section. Quoting the patch notes directly:
"Fixed an issue where several camo unlock requirements were inaccurate." (MW4 Launch Patch Notes)
The same update says it "Fixed an issue where Military Camos and Apex Attachments could appear locked again after Prestiging a weapon" and fixed camo unlocks showing the wrong (Shared Attachment) icon in the Weapon Progression menu. Infinity Ward's Trello board still listed the prestige relock as a Global Known Issue when it was last updated on October 22. So if you see it, assume your client may not have the fix yet.
Here's what Infinity Ward officially lists as camo- or challenge-related right now:
| Issue | Official status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Several camo unlock requirements showed the wrong text | Fixed in launch update | Update the game, restart, re-read the challenge |
| Military Camos and Apex Attachments relock after Weapon Prestige | Fixed in launch update (Trello card still open on Oct 22) | Update, restart, check the weapon again before re-grinding |
| Camo unlocks showed a Shared Attachment icon | Fixed in launch update | Cosmetic only, progress isn't affected |
| DMZ AI don't count as Backstab targets for challenges | Known issue (Trello) | Do Backstab-type challenges on players, or in Multiplayer |
| Applying some camos or reticles in DMZ Gunsmith can deduct DMZ cash | Under investigation (Trello) | Equip camos from Multiplayer Create-a-Class until it's fixed |
| FOB Upgrade challenges tracked inconsistently in DMZ | Fixed in launch update | Update and restart |
Anything outside this table is most likely one of the gating rules below, not a bug.
Is the camo challenge even unlocked yet?
This is the #1 cause, and it's easy to miss. MW4 camos unlock in a strict order, and a challenge you can see in the menu isn't necessarily active.
- Military Camos (8 per weapon) aren't challenges at all. They unlock automatically at Weapon Level milestones. On the Han 86 they come at Weapon Levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65. Other weapons use different levels, scaled to their own max level.
- Special Camos (3 per weapon) each have a challenge that only opens at a set Weapon Level. On the Han 86, Smoke opens at Level 25, Stormwave at 46 and Red at 72 (its max level). On the Sang 9mm, Autumn opens at 13, Snakeskin at 25 and Space Time at 38. Kills before that level don't count.
- Gold only opens after all 8 Military and all 3 Special camos are done on that weapon.
- Platinum only opens after every Gold in that weapon class is done. Infinity Ward's own example: you need all 8 Assault Rifle Golds before Platinum starts on any AR.
- Harmonic Break only opens after Platinum on all 33 weapons.
- Divergence is awarded for completing 33 Harmonic Break challenges, and it opens the Mastery 1 challenge.
Fix: open the weapon in Create-a-Class and check its Progression tab and the camo's challenge text. If the challenge shows a Weapon Level requirement you haven't reached, level the gun first. Why aren't my DMZ kills counting toward camos?
MW4 has one shared camo grind across Multiplayer and DMZ. Warzone joins at Season 1. Each challenge changes its target depending on the mode you're in. Infinity Ward puts it this way:
"Because non-player targets count in DMZ, Special Camo Challenges typically require a higher kill count in that extraction mode compared to Multiplayer or Call of Duty: Warzone. Once you complete the challenge in any mode, the Special Camo will be available in all modes." (MW4 Progression and Prestige)
So the same camo asks for different numbers in each mode. Official Han 86 examples:
| Camo | Multiplayer | DMZ |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke (mounted kills) | 20 player kills | 75 kills |
| Stormwave (suppressed kills) | 50 player kills | 125 enemy kills |
| Red (kill streaks) | 3 player kills without dying | 3 enemy kills without taking damage, 50 times |
| Gold | 15 eliminations in one match | 100 eliminations in one match |
| Platinum (ARs: headshots) | 50 headshots on players | 100 headshots on enemies |
Three things trip people up here:
- "Without dying" vs "without taking damage." DMZ versions of streak challenges often say without taking damage. One chip of damage from an AI soldier resets the streak, so it looks like the challenge isn't tracking.
- Backstabs on AI don't count. Infinity Ward's Trello confirms: "Enemy AI do not count as valid targets for Backstabs when completing challenges." Do kills-from-behind challenges on players, or in Multiplayer.
- The counter you're reading changes with the mode. Infinity Ward says you can finish a challenge "wholly or partly in Multiplayer or DMZ," but it hasn't published how partial progress converts between the two totals. Compare the same mode's counter before and after a match, not a Multiplayer number against a DMZ number.
For DMZ's own Mastery camos (Chiral → Ripple Tide → Helio) and their much bigger totals, see our DMZ Mastery camos guide.
Why is my Platinum or Harmonic Break camo still locked?
Because they're class-wide and arsenal-wide gates, not per-weapon challenges. Platinum on the Han 86 stays locked until you have Gold on all 8 Assault Rifles: Han 86, M4, Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, Kastov 762, Oden, Axion and Cronen Squall. Harmonic Break stays locked until you've done Platinum on all 33 weapons, including launchers and the FSS Carbon Edge 1095 melee weapon.
Each class also has its own Platinum and Harmonic Break task, so a "not tracking" Platinum is often the wrong kind of kill:
| Class | Platinum challenge | Harmonic Break challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifles | Headshots | Double kills |
| SMGs | Kills from behind | Hipfire kills |
| Shotguns | Hipfire kills | Kills without reloading |
| LMGs | Kills without dying | Kills without releasing the trigger |
| Marksman Rifles | Kills while prone | One-shot kills |
| Sniper Rifles | Kills while prone | One-shot kills |
| Pistols | Kills from behind | Hipfire kills |
| Launchers | Kills without taking damage | Player kills |
| Melee | Kills without dying | Kills from behind |

Did Weapon Prestige delete my camos?
No. Infinity Ward says Weapon Prestige keeps your customization. Blueprints, camos, reticles, accessories, decals and stickers "are maintained and not reset when Prestiging your Weapon." Prestiging resets the weapon to Level 1 and relocks its attachments, except Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint attachments.
What players saw at launch was a bug, not the system working as intended. Military Camos and Apex Attachments could show as locked again after a Weapon Prestige, and the Weapon Prestige menu wrongly said you'd lose Apex access. Infinity Ward listed it on Trello, and the launch update says it's fixed.
Fix: update the game, fully restart, then check the weapon again before you re-grind anything. Also note: Weapon Prestige and Player Prestige aren't available while you're searching for a match, so back out of matchmaking first. The four Pyroclast camos and how Weapon Prestige works are in our MW4 Weapon Prestige and Pyroclast camos guide.

Does Warzone count toward MW4 camos yet?
Not until Season 1 on November 6. Infinity Ward's progression blog describes the shared camo grind as covering Multiplayer and DMZ "and starting at Season 1, Call of Duty: Warzone." Until Season 1 arrives, Warzone matches won't move your MW4 camo counters.
The three Warzone Mastery camos (Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros) are still listed as [CLASSIFIED] in the official blog until Season 1. Anyone giving you their exact requirements today is guessing. Here's what's confirmed so far: MW4 Warzone Mastery camos: Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros.

Why didn't my progress save after a match?
Two launch-week causes:
- Disconnects. In DMZ, Infinity Ward released what it called a protection fix for mid-match disconnects. Affected players keep their starting equipment and progression, but not loot collected during that match. If you dropped mid-match, check the counter again after your next full match before assuming it's lost.
- "Update Requires Restart" prompts. Trello lists these as a known issue caused by connection timeouts. If the game asks you to restart, do it before you grind. A stale client is the most likely reason a fixed bug still shows up for you. If you can't get online at all, start with our MW4 "Connecting to Online Services" fix.
What's the fix checklist, in order?
- Update and fully restart MW4. The launch update fixed the wrong requirement text and the prestige relock.
- Re-read the challenge text in Create-a-Class > the weapon > Camo. Check the Weapon Level requirement and whether it says player kills, enemy kills or without taking damage.
- Confirm the gate is open. Gold needs all 11 Military and Special camos. Platinum needs every Gold in the class. Harmonic Break needs Platinum on all 33 weapons.
- Play the mode the counter is for. Track a Multiplayer counter in Multiplayer and a DMZ counter in DMZ. Skip Warzone until November 6.
- Avoid DMZ AI for Backstab challenges, and don't apply camos in DMZ Gunsmith while the cash-deduction issue is open.
- Still stuck after a full match? Report it the way Infinity Ward's Trello asks. Include your Activision ID, platform, region, and the date and time it happened, plus steps to reproduce it if you can.
Want the camo grind done without the bugs?
The MW4 camo ladder is long even when everything tracks: 11 camos per weapon before Gold, 33 Platinums before Harmonic Break, then 250 ten-kill matches just to start the Multiplayer Mastery chain at Mercurial Drift. If launch-week tracking issues are eating your evenings, all of our MW4 services are on the MW4 hub.
Lock in your MW4 setup now: bot lobbies, camo and weapon leveling are ready day one. If you'd rather play than babysit challenge counters, timesaver.gg runs MW4 services on all platforms:
- MW4 Bot Lobbies: easy lobbies for headshots, double kills and "without dying" camo challenges.
- MW4 Mastery Camo Unlock: skip the 33-weapon Platinum and Harmonic Break grind.
- MW4 Weapon Leveling: reach the Weapon Levels that open Special camo challenges faster.
- MW4 Account Leveling: climb to Level 55 and Prestige without the grind.
How do bot lobbies actually work, and are they safe? We explain in MW4 bot lobbies: how they work, safety and value.
FAQ
Why is my MW4 camo challenge stuck at 0? Usually because the challenge isn't active yet. Special camo challenges only open at a set Weapon Level (on the Han 86, Smoke opens at Level 25 and Red at Level 72), and Gold only opens once all 8 Military and 3 Special camos are done. Check the challenge text in the weapon's Camo menu for its unlock requirement.
Do DMZ kills count for MW4 camos? Yes. MW4 has one shared camo grind across Multiplayer and DMZ, and finishing a camo in either mode unlocks it everywhere. DMZ targets are higher because AI enemies count. For example, Stormwave on the Han 86 needs 50 player kills in Multiplayer, but 125 enemy kills in DMZ. AI enemies don't count for Backstab challenges right now, per Infinity Ward's Trello.
Why is MW4 Platinum locked when I have Gold? Platinum is a class gate. You need Gold on every weapon in that class first. For Assault Rifles, that's all 8 ARs. Harmonic Break is an arsenal gate: Platinum on all 33 weapons.
Did Weapon Prestige reset my MW4 camos? No. Weapon Prestige keeps camos, blueprints, reticles and other customization. A launch bug made Military Camos and Apex Attachments look locked again after prestiging. Infinity Ward says the launch update fixed it, so update and restart before you re-grind.
Does Warzone progress MW4 camos? Not yet. Warzone joins MW4's shared camo grind at Season 1 on November 6, 2026. The Warzone Mastery camos (Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros) still have classified requirements until then.
Where do I report an MW4 camo tracking bug? Infinity Ward tracks live issues on its official Modern Warfare 4 Trello board and posts fixes on @CODUpdates. When you report, include your Activision ID, platform, region, and the date and time of the issue, plus reproduction steps if you have them.
