Last checked October 22, 2026, against Activision's official Connecting to Modern Warfare 4 support article, the MW4 Known Issues page and the MW4 Launch Patch Notes. Modern Warfare 4 fully launches at midnight local time on October 23, 2026. Until then, only Campaign Early Access (from October 16) and DMZ Early Access (from October 20) are playable, and only for digital pre-orders.

TL;DR: why is MW4 stuck on "Connecting to Online Services"?
"Connecting to Online Services" is a handshake screen, not a crash. The game is waiting for Activision's servers to confirm your account before it shows the menu. When it hangs there, it's one of two things: Activision's servers are down or overloaded (very common in the first hours after a midnight launch), or something between your machine and those servers is blocking the connection. Check Activision's Online Services page first. If MW4 is green there and you're still stuck, work through Activision's own order: sign in to your platform account → check PSN/Xbox/Nintendo status → restart your router → go wired → run the router tests (UPnP, then Port Forwarding, then DMZ). On PC, add a file repair and a clean restart of the launcher. If MW4 isn't out in your time zone yet, multiplayer simply won't connect until midnight local.
Key numbers from Activision's official pages:
- 3 router tests in Activision's official connection guide: UPnP, Port Forwarding, then DMZ (consoles only).
- 23 hours: MW4 unlocks at midnight local, so the launch rolls from New Zealand (11:00 UTC, October 22) to Hawaii over roughly a full day. Every new time zone brings a new wave of logins.
- UDP 3074: the port Activision lists on every platform in its most recent Call of Duty port table.
- 10 devices: the Microsoft Store device limit Activision says to check if Xbox-on-PC players can't launch MW4 modes.
- 20 multiplayer maps, 33 weapons and 33 Operators go live at launch, per the official launch patch notes. That's a lot of content hitting the servers at once.
What does "Connecting to Online Services" actually mean in MW4?
When MW4 boots, it has to do three things before it lets you into a menu. It signs you into your platform account (PSN, Xbox network, Nintendo Account, Steam or Battle.net). It authenticates your Activision account. Then it pulls your online profile (progression, loadouts, entitlements). "Connecting to Online Services" is the screen you sit on during that handshake.
If any link in that chain fails or times out, the screen either hangs forever or kicks you back with a variant message: "Unable to Access Online Services", "Servers are not available", or a networking code. We cover the named error variants in separate guides:
- "Networking Failed to Start" (HUENEME / NEGEV) fix
- MW4 server status: is MW4 down?
- Secure Boot / TPM 2.0 error fix and Failed Attestation still not working
This guide covers the hang itself: the spinner that never finishes.
Is it the MW4 servers or your connection?
Answer this before you touch a single setting. Activision's support article is blunt about the order: "If you're having trouble connecting to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, you should first check Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Server Status." (Activision Support)
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Online Services page shows an alert or non-green status for MW4 | Activision-side outage or maintenance | Wait. Nothing on your end will fix it. Follow @ATVIAssist on X for updates |
| PSN / Xbox / Nintendo status page shows an outage | Platform-side outage | Wait for the platform to recover |
| Everything is green, friends on the same platform are getting in | Your network or your install | Work through the fixes below |
| Everything is green, nobody can get in, launch is less than ~2 hours old | Login surge that the status page hasn't caught up with | Give it 15–30 minutes, then retry |
| It's before midnight local on October 23 and you're trying multiplayer | MW4 multiplayer isn't out in your time zone yet | Only Campaign and DMZ Early Access are live until then |
That last row matters this week. Activision's official PC blog says "The full game releases on October 23 at midnight local time." We have the full time-zone breakdown in What time does MW4 unlock?, and the unlock schedule for Campaign, DMZ and full launch explains what's playable when.
Why does it happen so much on launch night?
Every Call of Duty launch hits the same wall. Millions of players log in within the same hour, every one of them needs an authentication handshake, and the login services queue or time out before the actual match servers are even involved. MW4 adds two things that make the first night busier:
- A rolling midnight unlock. Each time zone that ticks past midnight sends a fresh wave of logins. The busiest waves are usually Europe (around 22:00–23:00 UTC on October 22) and the US East and West coasts (04:00 and 07:00 UTC on October 23).
- A lot of content at once. The launch patch notes confirm 12 Core 6v6 maps, three Ground War maps, four Gunfight maps and Kill Block, plus "over a dozen" modes, 33 weapons and 33 Operators, all available on day one (MW4 Launch Patch Notes). On top of that, many players are downloading the day-one update right as they try to sign in. Our day-one patch guide covers the size and timing.
Infinity Ward has already fixed one server-side issue for launch. The patch notes list "Fixed a server crash that could occur during Multiplayer matches." That doesn't mean login queues won't happen. Every CoD launch has had them. It does mean a hang in the first hour is usually not your fault.
How do I fix MW4 "Connecting to Online Services" on PS5, Xbox and Switch 2?
These steps follow Activision's official Connecting to Modern Warfare 4 guide, in its order. Test the game after each one.
1. Make sure you're signed in to your system's account. If the console isn't signed in to PSN, Xbox network or your Nintendo Account, MW4 can't start the handshake at all. Activision notes that sign-in problems usually mean "there are likely issues with your console connecting to the internet."
2. Check your platform's status page. PlayStation Network Status, Xbox Status or Nintendo Online Service Status.
3. Run the console's own connection test.
- PS5: Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection.
- Xbox: Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Test network connection. Then run Test multiplayer connection too.
- Switch 2: System Settings → Internet → Test Internet Connection.
4. Restart your router and cut background traffic. Activision: "Restarting your router is often the easiest and quickest way to resolve connectivity issues." Pause any downloads (including the MW4 day-one update on another device), streams and cloud backups on your network.
5. Go wired. Activision's wording here is strong: "We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay." Wi-Fi drops are a classic cause of a handshake that never finishes.
6. Run the three router tests, one at a time:
| Test | What to change | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Test 1: UPnP | Turn off Port Forwarding, turn on Universal Plug and Play | Easiest. Fixes most Strict/Type 3 NAT cases |
| Test 2: Port Forwarding | Turn off UPnP, turn on Port Forwarding, give the console a static IP | Use the ports in the next section |
| Test 3: DMZ (consoles only) | Turn off Port Forwarding, put the console's static IP in the router's DMZ | Remove it from DMZ after testing. Activision says so explicitly |
If you're on a school, office or shared network, Activision says to talk to your network admin. Those networks often block the ports CoD needs. If nothing works, the official last step is to contact your Internet Service Provider.
Which ports does MW4 need?
As of October 22, Activision's Ports Used for Call of Duty Games page doesn't have an MW4-specific row yet. Its most recent entry covers Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, Warzone, Modern Warfare III and Modern Warfare II. That's the closest official reference until Activision adds MW4:
| Platform | TCP | UDP |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | 3478–3480 | 3074, 3478–3479 |
| Xbox | 3074 | 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500 |
| Steam | 3074, 27015, 27036 | 3074, 27015, 27031–27036 |
| PC (Battle.net / other) | 3074, 4000, 6112–6119, 20500, 20510, 27014–27050, 28960 | 3074, 3478, 4379–4380, 6112–6119, 20500, 20510, 27000–27031, 27036, 28960 |
Activision's Port Forward and NAT FAQ explains why this matters: "Ultimately, an Open/Type 1 NAT will provide the best connection quality." Moderate/Type 2 and Strict/Type 3 limit which players and services you can connect to.

How do I fix it on PC (COD HQ, Steam, Battle.net, Xbox app)?
PC adds a launcher layer, and a broken launcher state can look exactly like a server hang. A thread posted this week on r/CODWarzone describes Call of Duty HQ sitting on "Connecting to Online Services" through the Xbox app on PC, blocking MW4, Warzone and Black Ops 7 at the same time. That pattern points to the account or launcher, not one game. Try these in order:
- Fully close and relaunch the launcher. Exit Steam, Battle.net or the Xbox app from the system tray, not just the window, then reopen. If you're unsure how MW4 sits inside the shared Call of Duty launcher, our COD HQ shared launcher guide walks through it.
- Repair the game files. Steam: Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Battle.net: the cog next to Play → Scan and Repair. Xbox app: Manage → Files → Verify and repair. A partial day-one update is a common cause of an endless connect screen.
- Xbox app on PC: check Activision's known issue. Activision's MW4 Known Issues page lists an investigation into Xbox-on-PC players who can't launch Campaign or DMZ. Its official tips are to install "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 - Content Pack 1" before launching, and to check your Microsoft Store device management so you haven't hit the 10 device limit.
- Allow the game through Windows Firewall and pause third-party security tools or VPNs. Battle.net and Steam both have official firewall/connectivity pages linked from Activision's NAT FAQ.
- Clean boot. In the r/CODWarzone thread about Warzone crashing after the MW4 update on Steam, the first reply suggested disabling every startup program in Task Manager and rebooting. The poster replied that they were reinstalling through Battle.net to rule out a Steam-side install problem. (Other players in the same thread said Steam itself was working fine for them, so treat a launcher swap as a last resort.)
- Rule out the anti-cheat checks. If the hang ends in a Secure Boot, TPM or "Failed Attestation" message, it's a RICOCHET security check, not a network problem. Go straight to our Secure Boot / TPM fix.
Some players also switch to a public DNS (for example, Google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) when their ISP's DNS is slow to resolve Activision's servers. That's a community fix, not an Activision instruction, but it's harmless to try and easy to undo.
Will I lose my MW4 progress if I get stuck connecting?
No. MW4 progression (player level, weapon unlocks, camos, the two Prestige paths) is stored online on your Activision account, not on your console or PC. A failed handshake just means the game never loaded your profile. Nothing gets overwritten. Once you get through, everything from Campaign and DMZ Early Access is still there. See does Campaign progress carry over to multiplayer and do DMZ weapon levels and camos carry over.
The flip side: if you're hoping to grind offline while the servers recover, you can't. Multiplayer, DMZ and all progression need the online connection.
What should I do while the servers recover?
If the status page shows an Activision-side problem, the honest answer is to wait. Hammering the retry button doesn't move you up a queue. Use the time to:
- Finish the day-one download and repair your files so you're not stuck twice.
- Plan your first hour. Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4 and the last launch weapon unlocks at Level 55, per Activision's launch patch notes and Ready for Launch blog. Our launch-day first things to do checklist and fastest day-1 weapon leveling guide map it out.
- Check your pre-order items. If something is missing once you're in, our pre-order bonus not showing guide lists when each one actually unlocks.
Lost your launch night to a login queue? Lock in your MW4 setup instead. Once you're through, timesaver.gg's MW4 services are ready from day one:
- MW4 Bot Lobbies: private easy lobbies to level guns and knock out camo challenges without launch-week sweats.
- MW4 Mastery Camo Unlock: the full mastery camo grind, done for you.
- MW4 Weapon Leveling: max your favorite guns and unlock their attachments fast.
- MW4 Account Leveling: skip the rank grind straight to the unlocks you want.
- All Call of Duty: MW4 services: the full MW4 hub.

FAQ
Why is MW4 stuck on "Connecting to Online Services"? The game can't finish signing you in to Activision's servers. Either the servers are down or overloaded (most common right after the midnight launch), or your platform sign-in, network or router is blocking the handshake. Check Activision's Online Services page first. If MW4 is green there, the problem is on your end.
Is MW4 down right now? Check support.activision.com/onlineservices and the @ATVIAssist account on X. Those are the official sources. Our MW4 server status guide explains how to read them.
Why can't I connect to MW4 multiplayer before October 23? MW4 unlocks at midnight local time on October 23, 2026. Before that, only Campaign Early Access and DMZ Early Access are live, and only for digital pre-orders. Multiplayer won't connect until your time zone passes midnight.
Does a wired connection really fix MW4 connection problems? Often, yes. Activision "strongly recommend[s] using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay", because Wi-Fi has a wide variance in reliability and bandwidth that can break the sign-in handshake.
Will I lose my progress if MW4 won't connect? No. Your progression lives on your Activision account. A failed connection just stops the game from loading it. Nothing is deleted.
Which NAT type do I need for MW4? Activision says an Open/Type 1 NAT provides the best connection quality. Moderate/Type 2 can still connect, but only with Moderate or Open players. Strict/Type 3 is the most limited. Enable UPnP first, then try Port Forwarding if that doesn't work.
