MW4 Weapon Prestige Explained: What Relocks, All 4 Pyroclast Camos & When to Prestige Your Gun (Official)

Yes, Modern Warfare 4 has Weapon Prestige, and it ships on day one. Once any gun hits its max weapon level, you can reset it to earn four exclusive "Pyroclast" camos. The cost is steep: the gun loses its unlocked attachments, including shared attachments, and goes back to a classic one-level-at-a-time unlock path. Activision laid out the system in its official progression blog on October 19, and Infinity Ward's launch patch notes on October 21 added the shared-attachment detail. With the full game unlocking at midnight local time on October 23, here's what Weapon Prestige really costs and when it's worth it.

Quick answer (TL;DR): MW4's Weapon Prestige is optional and opens when a gun reaches Max Level (72 on the HAN 86, 38 on the SANG 9mm). Entering Weapon Prestige 1 resets that gun's level and relocks every attachment on it, including shared ones. Only Apex and Weapon Blueprint attachments stay. Your camos, blueprints, reticles and stickers are kept. Shared attachments stay unlocked on your other guns. Rewards: Pyroclast (Weapon Prestige 1, Level 1), Pyroclast Terminus (Weapon Prestige 1 Max Level), then Weapon Prestige Master, where nothing resets, with Pyroclast Scatter at Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Level 250. Weapon Prestige has nothing to do with player Prestige (Classic/Regular). Sources: Activision progression blog, MW4 launch patch notes.

The numbers that matter:

  • 4 Weapon Prestige camos, all versions of one evolving camo: Pyroclast, Terminus, Scatter, Cascade
  • 1 forced reset per gun. Weapon Prestige 1 resets you, and Weapon Prestige Master never does
  • 150 / 250: the Weapon Prestige Master levels for Pyroclast Scatter and Pyroclast Cascade
  • 33 launch weapons, each with its own max level: 53–75 for primaries, 37–44 for pistols (full list)
  • 2 attachment types that survive the reset: Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint Attachments

"If a player chooses to Prestige their weapon, all attachment on that weapon (including shared attachments) become locked, and the weapon moves to a classic level system unlock. The shared attachments will remain unlocked on other weapons that have not been Prestiged." — Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 4 Launch Patch Notes, October 21, 2026

Does MW4 have Weapon Prestige?

Yes. Activision confirms that "every weapon class in Modern Warfare 4 includes an optional Weapon Prestige journey that becomes available after reaching a weapon's Max Level." It's in the base launch progression, so it isn't a Season 1 add-on and doesn't need a Battle Pass.

You'll find it at Create a Class → Edit Custom Class: open the weapon and switch to the Progression tab, next to Gunsmith and Appearance. Scroll the weapon's unlock track to the end. After the final level, which is the gun's Apex attachment on most primaries, there's a Weapon Prestige tile and a Prestige Weapon button. The in-game prompt shown in Activision's screenshot says: "Enter weapon prestige to earn exclusive camos. This will relock all of your attachments and reset your weapon level back to zero."

Two things to know before going further:

  • It's optional. Nothing in the camo ladder (Military → Special → Gold → Platinum → Harmonic Break → Divergence → mode Mastery) requires Weapon Prestige. The Pyroclast camos are a separate reward track. For the main ladder, see our MW4 mastery camos guide.
  • It's per gun. Prestiging your HAN 86 does nothing to your M4, your SMGs or your player level.

What resets when you Weapon Prestige in MW4?

This is where most players will get caught out. Combining the official blog and the October 21 patch notes:

The last row matters most for your grind. Infinity Ward built MW4's normal progression around shared attachments: "The speed of weapon progression increases with every shared attachment you've earned." If you already own an optic from another gun, levelling a new gun skips past it. Our weapon leveling guide covers how much time that saves.

A prestiged gun loses that shortcut. Per the patch notes, it "moves to a classic level system unlock," so you earn its attachments back one level at a time, even ones you've unlocked on 20 other guns. Prestige a gun and you're signing up for the slow version of its level track.

How do you unlock all 4 Pyroclast camos?

All four Weapon Prestige camos are stages of one camo that Activision calls "the evolving Weapon Camo called 'Pyroclast.'" Activision's renders show black metallic scales with neon-green highlights that get brighter and more animated at each stage.

The path, step by step:

  • Level the gun to Max the normal way, with shared-attachment skips.
  • Enter Weapon Prestige 1. You get Pyroclast immediately, and the gun's attachments relock.
  • Level it to Max again, this time one attachment per level. That earns Pyroclast Terminus.
  • You enter Weapon Prestige Master automatically. Activision says that from here "the Weapon Level does not reset to 1 and you keep all earned attachments." You also get a Weapon Prestige Master icon.
  • Keep levelling to Master Level 150 for Pyroclast Scatter and Master Level 250 for Pyroclast Cascade.

Activision hasn't said how the Master levels are counted relative to the gun's normal max (for example, whether a HAN 86 starts Master at 72 or at 0). The only safe reading of the official wording is "Level 150" and "Level 250" on the Master track. We'll update this section once launch-week players report the real counter.

Is Weapon Prestige the same as Classic or Regular Prestige?

No. They're two separate systems, and mixing them up is the most common question in launch-week threads.

Player Prestige in MW4 gives you two paths for the first time in the series. Classic trades a reset for a 20% XP boost and a Permanent Unlock Token. Regular lets you replay levels 1–55 without losing anything. The full breakdown, with all 10 Prestige rewards, is in our MW4 Prestige guide. For this article, remember that player Prestige never touches your weapon levels and Weapon Prestige never touches your player level.

Should you Weapon Prestige your main gun in launch week?

Our take for launch week: don't prestige the gun you depend on until its camo work is done. Here's why, and when it does make sense.

Prestige now if:

  • The gun is "finished" for you. Its camo challenges are done (at least Gold) and you just want the next flex. Pyroclast is visible on the Killcam with a Prestige icon, which is more than most camos get.
  • You're chasing Pyroclast Cascade. The Master track never resets again, so starting early means more of your normal playtime counts toward Level 250.
  • You have Double Weapon XP Tokens saved. Activision specifically recommends them: "To speed up the process, activate earned Double Weapon XP Tokens throughout the weapon leveling process." See every free 2XP source and the Double XP tokens you get from the campaign.

Wait if:

  • You're still on Special or Completionist challenges with that gun. Activision gates the three Special Camo challenges by weapon level, and the third one opens at max level (the HAN 86's "Red" opens at Level 72). It hasn't said whether a mid-progress challenge stays active after the level resets. Our recommendation, not an official rule: finish a gun's Special camos and Gold before prestiging it.
  • The gun's build depends on attachments you haven't unlocked elsewhere. Prestiging leaves you on a near-stock gun until you re-level it, now without shared-attachment skips. In sweaty Search & Destroy lobbies, that hurts.
  • It's your only good gun in a class. Level a second weapon in the same class first. That spreads your shared attachments and gives you a backup while the main gun is re-levelling.

A practical order for launch weekend: level 2–3 guns per class to max (shared attachments make each one faster), finish their Special camos, push your favourite to Gold, then prestige it. If you're also doing DMZ, weapon XP and camo progress are shared between modes, so your DMZ Early Access levels already count.

How long does Weapon Prestige take in MW4?

Nobody has real numbers before launch, so treat any "X hours to Pyroclast Cascade" claim you see this week as a guess. Here's what the official data supports:

  • The first max is the fastest. Shared attachments let you skip unlocks you already own, and the more guns you've levelled, the faster each new one goes.
  • The second max (to Pyroclast Terminus) is slower. The prestiged gun uses the classic unlock system, so no skips.
  • Master levels 150 and 250 are the real grind. Like a Prestige Master track, they're there for players who main one gun for a whole season.
  • Warzone joins the pool in Season 1. Activision says MW4's camo grind becomes shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and, "starting in Season 1, Call of Duty: Warzone." At launch, weapon XP comes from Multiplayer and DMZ.

For a sense of scale, the HAN 86 has to hit Level 72 twice just to reach Pyroclast Terminus. Max levels run from 53 (X-58 Nyx) to 75 (KG-7 Vulcan), so pick your prestige gun with that in mind. Our launch-day attachment unlock guide covers the fastest XP sources, and the Apex attachments explainer covers the attachment that survives every reset.

What are players asking about MW4 Weapon Prestige?

Search interest leading into launch is dominated by one question: does MW4 have weapon prestige at all? Autocomplete for "mw4 weapon prestige" is almost entirely questions ("does mw4 have weapon prestige", "will mw4 have weapon prestige camos"). The other recurring worry in community threads is whether prestiging "deletes" your camos. It doesn't: Activision lists camos, blueprints, reticles, accessories, decals and stickers as "maintained and not reset when Prestiging your Weapon."

The detail almost nobody had before October 21 is the shared-attachment relock on the prestiged gun. The October 19 blog only said "all attachments except Apex and Blueprint attachments". The launch patch notes made it explicit that shared attachments on that gun relock too, while staying unlocked everywhere else.

FAQ

Does MW4 have weapon prestige? Yes. Every weapon in Modern Warfare 4 has an optional Weapon Prestige track that opens when the gun hits its Max Level. It's part of the launch progression on October 23, so no Season 1 or Battle Pass is needed (Activision).

Do you lose attachments when you weapon prestige in MW4? On that gun, yes. Every attachment relocks, including shared attachments, except Apex and Weapon Blueprint attachments. Shared attachments stay unlocked on your other, non-prestiged guns (launch patch notes).

Do you lose camos when you weapon prestige? No. Activision says camos, blueprints, reticles, accessories, decals and stickers are all kept when you prestige a weapon.

What are the MW4 weapon prestige camos? There are four stages of the Pyroclast camo: Pyroclast (Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1), Pyroclast Terminus (Weapon Prestige 1 Max Level), Pyroclast Scatter (Weapon Prestige Master Level 150) and Pyroclast Cascade (Weapon Prestige Master Level 250).

Does weapon prestige reset more than once? No. Only entering Weapon Prestige 1 resets the gun. After you max it again you move into Weapon Prestige Master automatically, where the level doesn't reset and you keep all earned attachments.

Is weapon prestige the same as Classic Prestige? No. Classic and Regular Prestige reset your player level (1–55). Weapon Prestige resets one gun. They don't affect each other. Our Prestige guide covers the player-level choice.

Last checked: October 22, 2026, against Activision's October 19 progression blog and the October 21 launch patch notes. MW4's full launch is October 23, 2026; Warzone integration arrives with Season 1.
