Last checked October 29, 2026, against Activision's official Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 announcement (published October 28) and the official Ready for Launch maps and modes post. Season 1 is not live yet. Map names, dates, layouts and modes come from Activision; nothing here is leaked or datamined. Tactical tips are our own read of the official map notes, and player reactions come from one community thread, both labeled as such.

TL;DR: what are the new maps in MW4 Season 1?

Quick answer: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 goes live at midnight ET on November 6, 2026 (9 PM PT on November 5) with three 6v6 Multiplayer maps on day one: Backstab (brand-new, snowy war-torn town), Canyon (brand-new, desert gorge with a river and cave) and a reimagined Shoot House set in North Korea. All three are medium-sized. At mid-season (Season 1 Reloaded) Activision adds Ministry and Overflow, plus more maps it still lists as [CLASSIFIED]. Kill Block also gets a fixed featured combo called Crash. Shipment is already live, since it landed early on October 27.

Key numbers (from the official Season 1 blog):

  • 3 new 6v6 maps at Season 1 launch: Backstab, Canyon, Shoot House
  • 2 named mid-season maps: Ministry and Overflow ("more than six maps" across the season, per Activision)
  • 16 Core-style 6v6 maps in rotation from November 6: the 12 launch Core maps, Shipment, and the 3 new Season 1 maps
  • 3 Kill Block slabs locked in place for the new Crash combo, which has no reshuffle between rounds
  • 6+ modes across the season, starting with Possession (Oct 29) and Infected (Oct 30)

When do the MW4 Season 1 maps go live?

Backstab, Canyon and Shoot House unlock with the Season 1 update at 0000 ET on November 6 (2100 PT on November 5) on every platform. That's two weeks after MW4's October 23 launch. Activision's Season 1 announcement splits the map drop into two waves:

Activision hasn't given a date for Season 1 Reloaded yet. Based on past seasons it usually lands about halfway through, but treat that as an estimate rather than a confirmed date. The full season calendar is in our MW4 Season 1 release date and roadmap guide.

What is the Backstab map in MW4?

Official MW4 Season 1 map card for Backstab, a snowy 6v6 town with abandoned tanks and its minimap layout

Backstab is a brand-new, medium-sized 6v6 map set in a snow-covered, war-torn town. Activision describes it as a place "where abandoned tanks litter the landscape and drone ordinance line the shelves of a deserted dwelling."

How it plays, according to the official map notes:

  • Streets = long sightlines. The roads between houses are where long-range fights happen. Snipers and marksman rifles get real lanes here.
  • Open buildings = close fights. Head indoors and the map turns into SMG and shotgun range.
  • Four named power positions: the roof of the Stronghold House, and the upper floors of the Sniper House, Grandpa's House and the Destroyed Building.
  • Blasted walls = flank routes. Holes punched through walls across the map create side paths around the main lanes.

Our read (a prediction until the map is playable): that mix makes Backstab the most loadout-flexible of the three launch maps, and the house roofs are likely to decide Hardpoint and Domination games early. Run an assault rifle that can hold a street, plus a fast secondary for clearing interiors.

What is the Canyon map in MW4?

Canyon is the second brand-new map: a sun-scorched desert gorge where "towering rock walls trap in the chaos below." It's medium-sized, 6v6, and built around natural cover rather than buildings.

The official callouts to learn first:

  • River: runs near the site of the Convoy Ambush, the wrecked-vehicle area in the middle of the low ground.
  • Cliff Path: a winding high route with "rugged vistas" that gets you around the open floor.
  • Cave (north): a shaded tunnel leading to the Abandoned Shack, which Activision flags as an ambush spot for hidden Operators.
  • Central Mesa: the big high point, with views "toward both ends of the map."
  • Shelves and platforms: small climbable ledges everywhere that give quick height.

Activision warns you'll "have to time your movements to avoid getting caught without cover." That means wide open spaces, so crossing the floor without smoke or a teammate watching the Mesa is a good way to feed kills. On paper, Canyon looks like the long-range map of the season.

Is Shoot House back in MW4?

Official MW4 Season 1 map card for the reimagined Shoot House set in snowy North Korea with its three-lane minimap

Yes. Shoot House returns on November 6 as a reimagined 6v6 map, rebuilt for MW4's new combat and movement systems. The layout is the one players know from Modern Warfare (2019). What's changed is the setting. In Activision's words: "While veterans of the map will instantly recognize the layout, the setting is reimagined against the rugged terrain of North Korea during a light snowfall."

It's still a three-lane map:

LaneWhat's there
SouthJunkyard
MiddleTunnels leading toward the Center
NorthContainers
Power positionsThe overhead Hospital and Apartment

Lots of connecting routes run between the lanes, so rotations stay fast. If you're grinding camo challenges, Shoot House is likely to be the best of the three new maps for it: a medium map with predictable lanes produces steady engagements. Our MW4 camo challenges explained guide covers which challenges suit which ranges.

What are Ministry and Overflow?

These are the two named mid-season maps. Activision has only given one-line teasers so far:

  • Ministry: "Battle erupts at the Global Peace Summit," with fighting in and around a damaged embassy building. Expect interiors and close quarters.
  • Overflow: set around a factory and its surrounding farmland, with "a convoy of mobile rocket launchers" firing in the background.

Activision says to expect "additional, remarkable locations at mid-season," with full details coming in the Season 1 Reloaded announcement. Treat any other map names you see online as unconfirmed until Activision posts them.

What is Kill Block: Crash?

Kill Block, the modular Westbridge Training Facility map, gets a featured combo called Crash in Season 1. Normally Kill Block reshuffles its slabs between rounds. On Crash, all three slabs stay static and don't change. Activision says Infinity Ward hand-picked this set "based on the most popular combinations from the MW4 Beta," with Crash's helicopter-down layout front and center.

The bigger change is that Crash is added to a variety of Core Multiplayer playlists, including Search and Destroy. A fixed layout means you can learn spawns and lines on it like any normal map. If Kill Block's reshuffling is new to you, start with our Kill Block explained guide.

Is Shipment already in MW4?

Yes, it's been live since October 27. Shipment is a small 6v6 remaster set on a Russian harbor, and Activision itself pitches it as the place to "level up those crucial early Weapon ranks, so you're ready to go when the Season 1 Multiplayer maps arrive." See our Shipment XP farm guide for the fastest setup, and our Shipment launch map guide for the background.

Which new modes come with the Season 1 maps?

The maps arrive alongside 6+ modes, and two of them start this week:

ModeTypeArrives
PossessionNew party modeOct 29 (pre-season)
InfectedReturning party modeOct 30 (pre-season)
GrindReturningNov 6
Drop ZoneReturningNov 6
Gauntlet 1v1Variant (Wager Match Event)Nov 6, limited time
Counter Attack + a new TDM twistNewMid-season

Possession lets you take over the enemy you eliminate, including their loadout. We cover it in detail in our Possession mode explained guide. Infected gives the Infected an FSS Carbon Edge combat knife, a throwing knife and the Ninja perk. Survivors get a Rezi 12 shotgun with explosive slugs (Enforcer Apex), a Trip Wire and a Concussion Grenade. Grind has you bank enemy dog tags at two Banks. Drop Zone rains random killstreak care packages on one rotating objective.

What are players saying about the Season 1 maps?

This is a small sample, not a poll: the comments below come from the r/modernwarfare4 Season 01 roadmap thread (9 comments when we checked on October 29). In that thread, reactions were mostly positive about the maps and mixed on everything else. One player counted "5 maps minimum (4 of them new)" plus four weapons and called it "kinda wild." Others were happiest that respawn modes are coming to Kill Block. At least one player singled out Shoot House as the map they can't wait for. One argued that Canyon and Backstab look like they mix longer sightlines with close-quarters combat. Not everyone is sold, though. One commenter pointed out that outside the map count, Season 1 is lighter than what MWIII, BO6 and BO7 shipped in their first seasons.

How should you prepare for the new maps?

The new maps can't be played before November 6, but you can get your guns and classes ready now so you're not grinding basics once they drop:

  • Level your guns now. The Season 1 weapons (Cronen Osprey and CSG-35) start at Level 1, and your current guns still need their attachments. See our MW4 Season 1 weapons guide.
  • Build one long-range and one close-range class. Canyon and Backstab's streets reward range. Shoot House's tunnels and Backstab's interiors reward speed.
  • Learn the power positions first: Backstab's house roofs, Canyon's Mesa and Cliff Path, and Shoot House's Hospital and Apartment.
  • Play Crash in S&D as soon as it's live. It's a fixed Kill Block layout, so the players who learn it first will have an edge.

For the full launch map list these three join, see all MW4 maps confirmed. For the Warzone side of Season 1, see our Hajin Warzone map guide. Activision posts the full Warzone intel on November 2.
