Updated October 28, 2026 (launch +5 days). Camo structure and the per-class Platinum and Harmonic Break challenges are taken from Infinity Ward's official MW4 Progression and Prestige blog. Known issues are from the official MW4 Infinity Ward Trello board, checked this morning.
Quick answer (TLDR): MW4 camo challenges are short labels for specific kill conditions. Focused most likely means aiming down sights while steadying your aim with the hold-breath (Focus) input. That's how it worked in Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare II, and MW4's definition isn't published. From Behind means the target was facing away from you. Point Blank means very close range and Longshot means past the weapon's long-range threshold. Infinity Ward hasn't published the exact distances. Every gun has 8 Military camos (Weapon Level) and 3 Special camos (combat challenges) before Gold opens at 15 kills in one Multiplayer match or 100 in one DMZ match. After that, each weapon class has its own Platinum and Harmonic Break condition. The full class-by-class list is below. Infinity Ward's Trello noted that DMZ AI don't count for backstab-style challenges. That card has since moved to Resolved without a confirmation either way, so From Behind kills are safest on players.

How do MW4 camo challenges work?
Every MW4 weapon climbs the same ladder, and the challenge wording changes at each step:
- Military camos (8): these come from leveling the gun. They have no kill condition. The Han 86 unlocks them at Weapon Levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65.
- Special camos (3 per weapon): these are the combat challenges. Each one opens at a set Weapon Level. This is where wording like Mounted, Akimbo, Point Blank and Longshot shows up.
- Gold: 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match, or 100 in a single DMZ match.
- Platinum, then Harmonic Break: one fixed condition per weapon class (table below).
- Divergence: awarded for 33 Harmonic Break completions, then the mode-specific Mastery camos.
The rule that confuses most players is that the same challenge has different numbers in each mode. Infinity Ward put it this way:
"Modern Warfare 4 features a single Weapon Camo grind that is shared across all modes, and the Special Camo Challenges will automatically adjust to the specific mode you are playing." (Infinity Ward, MW4 Progression and Prestige)
DMZ asks for more kills because AI enemies count there. The Han 86's Smoke camo is 20 mounted kills in Multiplayer or 75 in DMZ. Sometimes the condition changes too, not just the count. The Han 86's Red camo is 3 kills without dying in Multiplayer but 3 kills without taking damage, 50 times, in DMZ. The Sang 9mm's Snakeskin works the same way: 3 kills without dying 5 times in Multiplayer, or 3 without taking damage 15 times in DMZ. Always read the card for the mode you're in. Finish a Special camo in either mode and it unlocks everywhere. Warzone joins this shared grind with Season 1 on November 6 (our Season 1 date page). For how the shared track carries between modes, see the MW4 shared camo grind explainer.
What does each MW4 camo challenge actually mean?
This is the glossary the game doesn't give you. Infinity Ward's blog lists the challenge types (mounted, silencer, ADS, Akimbo, double kills, longshots, headshots and more) but doesn't define them. The "what counts" column is how these conditions have worked in recent Infinity Ward Modern Warfare games. If a kill doesn't register the way it's described, check the in-game challenge text first.
| Challenge wording | What counts | Fastest way to farm it |
|---|---|---|
| Focused | Likely ADS kills while holding the steady-aim (Focus) input (MWII behavior, unconfirmed for MW4) | Mid-range lanes, ADS, hold the input before you fire |
| From Behind | Target is facing away from you at the kill | Flanks, spawn-side routes; players only for backstabs |
| Point Blank | Kill at very close range (no official distance) | Shotguns and SMGs on small maps, corners, doorways |
| Longshot | Kill past the gun's long-range threshold | Long sightlines; watch for the Longshot medal |
| Mounted | Weapon mounted on cover when you get the kill | Hold a ledge or window over a busy lane |
| Prone | You are lying down at the kill | Hardcore, long lanes, stay put |
| Crouched | You are crouched at the kill | Pair with Mounted or Focused on the same lane |
| While Jumping | You are airborne at the kill | Jump-peek doorways with a shotgun or SMG |
| Hipfire | Kill without aiming down sights | Shotguns, SMGs, laser attachments, Shipment |
| Aiming Down Sights | Kill while ADS | Any normal gunfight, it tracks on its own |
| Headshot | Final hit lands on the head | Pre-aim head height on predictable angles |
| Silencer | Kill with a suppressor equipped | Equip it and play normally |
| Akimbo | Kill while dual-wielding (pistols) | Akimbo pistols on small maps |
| Double Kill | Two kills in quick succession | Objective modes where players stack |
| Without Reloading | 2+ kills from one magazine | Big mags, don't tap reload between fights |
| Without Releasing the Trigger | 2+ kills in one continuous burst (LMGs) | Hold lanes where enemies come in pairs |
| One Shot Kill | Kill with a single bullet | Snipers and marksman rifles, aim for the head |
| Direct Shot | Launcher projectile hits the target directly | Launchers vs players, not splash |
| Without Dying | X kills in one life, repeated | Play safe, use killstreaks to hold the streak |
| Without Taking Damage | X kills with no damage taken during the run | Any hit ends the attempt, so only take fights you start |
Two rows trip people up more than the rest: Focused and From Behind. A player in r/modernwarfare4 asked exactly that this morning, and the thread had no answers when we checked. Here they are in detail.
What counts as "Focused" kills in MW4?
A Focused kill is an ADS kill while you're steadying your aim. In Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare II (2022), the hold-breath input is labeled Focus. It shares the Sprint input (click the left stick on controller, Shift on keyboard by default), you use it while ADS, and it cuts scope sway. To be safe, keep the input held when the shot lands.
How to farm it without thinking about it:
- Pick a mid-range lane and pre-aim it. You'll have time to start holding the input before the enemy shows up.
- Use a gun you'd aim down sights with anyway (AR, marksman, sniper). The steady-aim input is natural there.
- Check your bindings. If you've remapped Sprint, the steady-aim input may have moved with it. Look under the controller or keybind settings if Focused kills aren't counting.
Infinity Ward hasn't published a definition of Focused for MW4. If your Focused kills aren't counting while you hold the input, check the official Trello for a known issue and work on another challenge until it's confirmed.
What counts as a kill "from behind"?
A kill From Behind counts when the victim is facing away from you at the moment you kill them. It's the backstab condition, and it's the official Platinum challenge for both SMGs and Pistols, plus the Harmonic Break challenge for Melee.
The big catch is DMZ. Infinity Ward's Trello board says it plainly:
"Enemy AI do not count as valid targets for Backstabs when completing challenges." (Infinity Ward, MW4 Trello)
That card has since been moved to the board's Resolved list (last updated October 26), and Infinity Ward hasn't said whether AI backstabs count now. Until you've seen DMZ AI kills tick your counter, don't burn a deployment flanking AI. Do it in Multiplayer:
- Play objective modes (Domination, Hardpoint). Enemies stare at the point, which gives you their backs.
- Rotate behind spawns on small maps. Every new spawn wave runs away from you.
- Run a quiet build. You're walking up on people who don't know you're there.
What counts as Point Blank and Longshot kills?
Both are distance checks, and Infinity Ward hasn't published either distance for MW4. Treat any exact meter number you see online as a community estimate.
- Point Blank = very close range, basically arm's length to a few meters. Shotguns and SMGs make it trivial. LMGs and snipers make it painful, and "Point Blank camo challenges suck" is a common complaint on the MW4 subreddit this week.
- Longshot = past the weapon's long-range threshold, and the threshold is lower on short-range guns. The reliable tell is the Longshot medal or callout on the kill. If it doesn't appear, the kill didn't count.
Map choice matters. One commenter in the subreddit got their SMG longshots by going prone on Mumbai in Hardcore, watching the train-track lane. Another uses Lithium's long sightline. For Point Blank, the small-map rotation is your friend. Shipment 24/7 is live, and our Shipment XP farm guide covers the decoy-grenade trick that levels the gun at the same time.

Which challenge does each weapon class need for Platinum and Harmonic Break?
This is the official per-class list. Platinum opens once every weapon in the class has Gold. Harmonic Break opens once all 33 weapons have Platinum.
| Weapon class (count) | Platinum challenge | Harmonic Break challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifles (8) | Headshots | Double Kills |
| SMGs (5) | Kills from Behind | Hipfire Kills |
| Shotguns (2) | Hipfire Kills | Kills without Reloading |
| LMGs (3) | Kills without Dying | Kills without Releasing the Trigger |
| Marksman Rifles (3) | Kills while Prone | One Shot Kills |
| Sniper Rifles (3) | Kills while Prone | One Shot Kills |
| Pistols (4) | Kills from Behind | Hipfire Kills |
| Launchers (4) | Kills without Taking Damage | Player Kills |
| Melee (1) | Kills without Dying | Kills from Behind |
Source: MW4 Progression and Prestige, Infinity Ward, October 19, 2026.
Infinity Ward only published exact numbers for the Han 86. Its Platinum is 50 headshots in Multiplayer or 100 in DMZ, and its Harmonic Break is 25 double kills in Multiplayer or 50 in DMZ. Counts differ by weapon, so check the challenge card in game.
That table explains the strange lobbies right now. Snipers and marksman rifles both need prone kills for Platinum, so the "why is everyone lying on the floor" posts are really people doing camo challenges. One r/modernwarfare4 poster said exactly that last night. If you want the whole Gold step first, our MW4 Gold camo guide covers every requirement and the per-weapon max levels.
Which MW4 camo challenges are the hardest?
This is our ranking by how much time each one tends to cost, based on the official conditions above and what players are complaining about this week:
- Launcher Platinum: kills without taking damage, repeated. One hit ends the attempt, and launchers are slow to fire again. Fight from cover and only fire at targets that haven't seen you.
- LMG Point Blank and Harmonic Break (without releasing the trigger). LMGs are slow to ADS and you need multi-kill bursts. Hold a lane on objective modes where players arrive in pairs.
- Longshots on SMGs and pistols. The threshold is lower on short-range guns, but you still have to win long fights with them. Use Hardcore, where one or two hits kill.
- "Without Dying" streaks on every class. MW4 launched with no Open Matchmaking playlist (what Infinity Ward said about SBMM), and skill-based matchmaking can put you in tougher lobbies after strong games.
- Prone kills for Marksman and Sniper Platinum. It isn't hard, just slow: 3 weapons × 2 classes of lying down.
The pattern is simple. Conditions that change how you move (prone, jumping, from behind) cost the most time on guns that aren't built for them.
Why isn't my camo challenge counting?
Before you assume your kills are wrong, check these:
- Wrong mode target. Infinity Ward's Trello noted that backstab-style kills on DMZ AI don't count. Do From Behind in Multiplayer.
- The challenge isn't open yet. Special camos open at set Weapon Levels. The Han 86's third Special only opens at Level 72, its max.
- It's a UI bug, not lost progress. As of October 27, the Trello board has a Patriot XMR Platinum card describing two symptoms. The challenge isn't displaying correctly in the UI, though Infinity Ward says it "can still be completed and progressed despite not displaying accurately." The same card says some players can't unlock it after meeting the Gold requirements.
- You prestiged the gun. At launch, Military camos could show as locked again after Weapon Prestige. The October 23 update fixed it (how Weapon Prestige works).
The full list of causes and fixes is in MW4 camo challenges not tracking.

FAQ
What does "Focused" mean in MW4 camo challenges? Infinity Ward hasn't published an MW4 definition. Most likely it means getting the kill while aiming down sights and holding the steady-aim (Focus) input, which shared the Sprint button in Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare II (2022).
What counts as a kill from behind in MW4? The enemy has to be facing away from you when you kill them. It's the Platinum challenge for SMGs and Pistols and the Harmonic Break challenge for Melee. Infinity Ward's Trello noted that enemy AI don't count as valid backstab targets. That card has since moved to Resolved without saying whether AI now count, so Multiplayer is the safe place to do them.
How close is Point Blank in MW4? Infinity Ward hasn't published the distance. It's very close range, roughly arm's length to a few meters. Shotguns and SMGs on small maps like Shipment are the fastest way to farm it.
Why does everyone go prone in MW4? Marksman Rifles and Sniper Rifles both need kills while prone for their Platinum camo, according to Infinity Ward's Progression blog. With 6 weapons across the two classes, a lot of players are lying down for camos right now.
Do MW4 camo challenges count in DMZ? Yes. The camo grind is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, and progress in either mode counts. DMZ asks for higher kill counts because AI count there. Do backstab-style challenges in Multiplayer, because Infinity Ward's Trello noted that AI don't count for them.
Is the Patriot XMR Platinum challenge bugged? Yes, as of October 27. Infinity Ward's Trello card says the Patriot XMR Platinum challenge isn't displaying correctly in the UI but still progresses, and that some players can't unlock it after meeting the Gold requirements. A fix is in progress.
