Quick answer: In Once Human you farm acid and oil with pumps and wells, not by hand. In the classic land scenarios like Manibus, a pump on dry ground inside a pollution zone pulls Polluted Water. An Osmosis Water Purifier turns it into Impure Acid, and a Brewing Barrel ferments 10 Impure Acid + 1 Purified Water into Acid. The same pump on dark oil-field ground in Red Sands or Blackheart pulls Barreled Crude Oil. In Isles of Abyss (live since October 21, 2026 (PT), Version 3.1.1), oil moves offshore to the Drilling Well, and acid comes from Fossils plus, players report, fish.
Acid is the resource that runs out first in almost every Once Human run. It goes into gunpowder, so it goes into every bullet you craft, and it shows up in facility and gadget recipes too. This week a player shared an Isles of Abyss acid and oil farm on r/OnceHumanOfficial, barely a week after launch. That tells you where the pressure is. This guide covers both versions of the game you might be playing on PS5, Xbox, PC or mobile: the new ocean scenario and the classic land scenarios. Every official claim is checked against the Isles of Abyss dev blog (October 16, 2026), the Version 3.1.1 update announcement and the Version 2.3.6 Tech overhaul notes (April 8, 2026), as of October 29, 2026. Anything that comes from players or creators is labeled as such.
What is acid used for in Once Human?
You'll burn through acid faster than almost anything else, because it sits at the bottom of the ammo chain. Exact quantities moved around in the April 2026 overhaul, which merged tiered materials and changed several formulas, so read the recipe card in your own client before planning big batches. These are the sinks that matter:
| What you craft | Why it eats acid |
|---|---|
| Gunpowder | Goes into almost every ammo type, so it's your biggest steady drain |
| Explosives and grenades | Explosive mixes use acid alongside sulfur and charcoal |
| Facilities like the Brewing Barrel and Synthesis Bench | One-off costs, but they land early, when acid is scarce |
| Batteries, potions and tactical gadgets | Small amounts per craft that add up over a run |
The ammo line is the one that matters. If you shoot a lot, your acid supply decides how much you can shoot, so a pump setup pays off as soon as you have a base.
How do you farm acid in Manibus and the classic scenarios?
The pump-filter-barrel acid farm has been the standard since 2024, and it still works on the classic land maps. It has three stages.
- Find a pollution zone with free building space. Pollution zones are the corrupted, discoloured areas on the map. Your territory has to reach into one.
- Place a pump on dry ground, not in water. This is where most setups fail. In a river or lake a pump gives you Dirty Water. On dirt or sand inside the pollution zone it gives you Polluted Water. Players on the Steam forums put it plainly: put the pump "into dry ground (not water) in a pollution zone". The April 2026 update also boosted this route: "Polluted Water output in Pollution Zones has been greatly increased," per the official 2.3.6 notes.
- Pipe it into an Osmosis Water Purifier. The purifier turns Polluted Water into Impure Acid. Feed it Dirty Water from a second pump and it makes Purified Water too. If a facility offers more than one output, set it in that facility's menu before you leave.
- Ferment in a Brewing Barrel. The commonly listed recipe is 10 Impure Acid + 1 Purified Water = Acid. With pipes connected, the barrel can pull from the purifier on its own, so the chain keeps running while you're away.
- Power it. Pumps need electricity, so add generators or solar panels and wire them in.
Run two or three of these rigs side by side and ammo stops being the bottleneck. Our Once Human base building guide covers territory placement. The short version: keep the pollution near your boundary, not under your main building footprint.
What are the other ways to make acid?
Older guides tell you to pick Tech Specializations for extra acid recipes. That advice is out of date. The official Version 2.3.6 notes (April 8, 2026) say "the original Tech Specialization system has been completely removed", with its effects folded into the Tech tree, Tech enhancements and facility enhancements. The acid-related ones moved to one place: "Sulfur Chemist, Petroleum Process, and Art of Stardust Decay will now be unlocked" on the Enhanced Electric Furnace. So today:
- Enhanced Electric Furnace enhancements. Unlock Sulfur Chemist or Art of Stardust Decay there for the sulfur-based and Stardust-based acid routes. Check the formula list in your client for current inputs.
- Contaminated crops. Players grow Contaminated Wheat, Berries and Aloe Vera from pollution-zone seeds and process the harvest into acid at a synthesis bench. The same update lowered wild seed drops, so keep a few seeds back for replanting.
- Combat and loot. Deviants and settlement crates drop acid. It's fine for your first hours, but it won't keep up with heavy ammo crafting.
How do you get crude oil in Manibus and the classic scenarios?
Crude oil uses the same pump. Location is what changes.
- Where: Oil fields show up as dark grey patches and streams on the map. The best-known area is around the Blackfell Oil Fields in Red Sands, and there are more in Blackheart.
- How: Place the pump on the dark oil-field ground inside your territory. It fills with Barreled Crude Oil instead of water.
- What it becomes: Refine the barrels into fuel for generators and vehicles. Older guides route it through a Refining Facility (Crude Oil to Portable Mixed Fuel, then to Barreled Premium Fuel). Since 2.3.6, the Petroleum Process enhancement also lives on the Enhanced Electric Furnace, so check which facility your client offers.
The classic "dream base" sits where an oil field meets a pollution zone, so one territory can run an acid line and an oil line together. Players still argue about which Blackfell spots qualify, and spots vary by server because someone may already have built there. Scout your own server's map before you commit a territory move.
How do you farm oil in Isles of Abyss?
Isles of Abyss moves oil out to sea. This is the part most older guides don't cover, because the scenario only launched on October 21.
The official word is short. From the Isles of Abyss dev blog (October 16, 2026):
"The ocean also holds energy for production—the Drilling Well can be used to obtain abyssal sea oil. As you unlock related Tech, you can also gradually begin automatic mining of special resources." — Once Human Development Team
The same paragraph adds that Black Tide Fuel "can be used for the Generator and Fuel Propeller, raising the Generator's Electricity cap and the Propeller's speed cap". The studio hasn't published how many barrels a well produces per hour, or the exact recipe that turns sea oil into Black Tide Fuel. Treat any exact number you see online as unconfirmed.
What is the AFK Drilling Well ship?
The setup players are copying this week comes from a creator video breakdown documented on oncehumanguide.com. It isn't official, but it matches what the dev blog describes.
- A light, sail-driven hull. Wooden platforms and a few sails. The creator reports about 80–90 km/h with no engines at all.
- Two Small Solar Generators and three Drilling Wells. Two panels were enough to run three wells at once in the video, and the source describes the whole rig as buildable a few hours into the scenario.
- Set each well to Barreled Crude Oil. The Drilling Well menu shown in the video lists four outputs, each tied to an area type: Barreled Crude Oil (Oil Field Area), Dirty Water (all areas), Sea Water (ocean) and Polluted Water (pollution zone). One well held up to 4,000 units in the video.
- Sail to an offshore oil field and drop anchor. The wells keep pumping while the ship stays in the area. The creator's spot is off a small island in Reefshadow Bay, northwest of a Lv. 10 settlement. Reefshadow Bay is also the Mist of Deceit Haywire Zone, so bring a counter item like the Blaze Core Lantern. Our Haywire Zones guide explains each one.
Two things to know before you build it. First, ships have facility limits. One player answered a crafting-limit question on r/OnceHumanOfficial this week with "a maximum of 4 crafting facilities you can have on your ship at once, no way to increase that currently" (thread). That counter sits under Build Mode, Facilities, Crafting Process, so it limits workbenches and furnaces. Structures, facilities and storage each show their own counters at the top of the Build Mode screen, and the same oncehumanguide.com breakdown says those limits rise with Ship Upgrade unlocks in the Tech tree. Check each counter before you plan the deck. Second, Load only comes from structural pieces, so a bare raft with three wells is cheap to sail. For hull planning, see our Isles of Abyss ship building guide.
How do you farm acid in Isles of Abyss?
The classic pollution-zone chain still has a place here, but Isles of Abyss adds acid sources that are easier to start with. Characters enter at max level and unlock gear and facilities through the scenario's Tech, so expect some of these to open up as your Tech level rises.
Fossils (official source)
The dev blog's resource table lists Fossil as "Obtained by gathering bones; acid can be extracted". If you're clearing islands anyway, pick up every bone pile. It's the only acid source the studio itself has named for the new scenario.
Fish (community-reported)
Several creators show a Fish Transformation node in the Production tab of the Tech tree. It lets you turn fish into acid at a synthesis bench, or smelt fish into Portable Mixed Fuel at a furnace. They report that bigger fish give more and sharks give the most. That's why some players breed one species in a Tidal Cage, which the dev blog confirms is for breeding fish "steadily", with the Advanced Tidal Cage on "a shorter breeding cycle". A Trawl Net on your ship also catches fish while you sail, so your acid stock grows on every trip. The studio hasn't published per-fish yields, so we don't list any.
Polluted Water at sea (community-reported)
The Drilling Well menu in the creator video also offered Polluted Water in pollution zones. If that works where you anchor, the classic filter-and-barrel chain runs on a ship too. Check the output list on your own well before building a whole line around it.
Where do you get sulfur for gunpowder?
Acid is only half of gunpowder. The other half is sulfur, and Isles of Abyss has a new source for it. The dev blog describes Falling Ember as a volcanic archipelago "with hot springs and sulfur scattered throughout". It also lists Sulfur Water, "obtained by gathering hot spring water", which "can be used to refine sulfur". If you're already on Falling Ember for Skyfire Gold, fill up on Sulfur Water on the same trip. Our Once Human gold guide covers that island.
Which acid and oil farm setup is best at each stage?
| Stage | Acid | Oil |
|---|---|---|
| First hours, any scenario | Loot crates, kill Deviants, pick up Fossils (Isles) | Loot what you find, smelt fish into Mixed Fuel (Isles, community) |
| Classic scenario, first base | Pump in pollution zone, filter, Brewing Barrel | Pump on oil-field ground (Red Sands, Blackheart) |
| Classic scenario, endgame | 2–3 parallel acid rigs plus furnace enhancements | Several oil pumps feeding your fuel refining |
| Isles of Abyss, early | Fossils plus Fish Transformation (community) | Drilling Wells on an anchored raft (community) |
| Isles of Abyss, late | Tidal Cage fish plus Trawl Net | Wells plus Tech-unlocked automatic mining (official, no numbers) |
Two habits save the most time in either version. Automate early, because a rig that runs while you're offline costs you no play time. And store your output where your workbenches can reach it, so ammo crafting never stalls on an empty chest.
Do acid and oil carry over when the scenario ends?
Only partly, and not in a way worth planning around. Your territory and chests stay in the old scenario. During the Settlement Phase you can move items into your Eternaland Backpack (formerly the Spacetime Backpack) by hand, and the rest transfers automatically when the scenario ends. Taking items into a new scenario then spends a limited transfer allowance, which deliberately caps how much you can bring with you. Energy Links don't carry over as Energy Links either: they convert to Astral Sand in Eternaland. Blueprints and Mods are the progression that really lasts. So spend your acid on ammo and gear you'll use this run. Don't stockpile 10,000 Impure Acid you'll never ferment. For the full list, see what carries over between scenarios.
Isles of Abyss runs about 21 days: Phase I lasts about 5–10 days and Phase II lasts 11 days. The studio's October 20 server-schedule post expects the Isles permanent server on November 18, 2026 (PT). If you're farming toward that, build the oil raft early and let it run through both phases.
FAQ
How do you get acid fast in Once Human? In the classic scenarios, the most hands-off source is a pump on dry ground inside a pollution zone, piped into an Osmosis Water Purifier and then a Brewing Barrel. Since April 2026, Polluted Water output in pollution zones is officially much higher. In Isles of Abyss, pick up Fossils (an official acid source) and, according to players, unlock Fish Transformation in the Production Tech tab to turn your catch into acid.
Why is my pump giving Dirty Water instead of Polluted Water? It's usually either standing in water or outside the pollution zone. Move it onto dry ground, like dirt or sand, inside the corrupted area, and check the output setting in the pump's menu.
Where is the best acid and oil farm location in Manibus? Players favour spots where a pollution zone overlaps an oil field, mainly around the Blackfell Oil Fields in Red Sands. The exact free plots depend on your server, because territories are first come, first served.
How do you get crude oil in Isles of Abyss? Build a Drilling Well. The official dev blog says it obtains "abyssal sea oil". Players run three wells on a light raft with two small solar generators and anchor over an offshore oil field.
How much oil does a Drilling Well produce? The studio hasn't published a rate. The only community figure is the in-game storage shown in one creator's video, where a single well held up to 4,000 units. Treat any per-hour number you see as unconfirmed.
Is farming the same on PS5 and Xbox as on PC? Yes. The official Isles of Abyss notes describe Drilling Wells, Fossils and Tech once for every platform, with no console-specific version. If you're new on console, our guide to joining Isles of Abyss on PS5 and Xbox gets you started.
