Quick answer: Gold in Once Human comes in two forms, and they do different jobs. Gold Ore is a mineable node found on every major map. You smelt 30 Gold Ore into 1 Gold Ingot at an Electric Furnace, and ingots are mainly an Energy Links earner. In the regular scenarios you need the Precious Metal Refining Memetic specialization to smelt them. Skyfire Gold is new with Isles of Abyss (live since the October 21, 2026 (PT) Version 3.1.1 update). It comes from mining meteors on Falling Ember during Skyfire weather, and it builds alloy ship structures and automated gathering facilities. In Isles of Abyss, Gold Ore is concentrated on Falling Ember, with a couple of nodes in Misty Marsh. Big Skyfire meteors are the other main gold source players report.
Gold is one of the most-asked resource questions since Isles of Abyss launched. One player on r/OnceHumanOfficial asked on October 26 whether there is "normal gold" in the new scenario, because their mining platform only offered "the new type of special gold that isn't unlocked yet". That's the confusion this guide clears up. It covers both kinds of gold, where each spawns, what to do with it, and which claims are official versus community-reported. Everything is checked against the official Isles of Abyss dev blog (October 16, 2026) and the Version 3.1.1 update announcement, as of October 27, 2026.
What is gold used for in Once Human?
Gold matters for three separate reasons, and most "is gold useless?" threads come from players who only know one of them.
- Crafting ingredient. Raw Gold Ore goes into a long list of recipes. The community database at oncehuman.th.gl counts it as an ingredient in 52 items. Those include the Ammunition Supplies Workbench, the Lv. 2 Turret, the MGL (Tier 4 and Tier 5), the Stamina Saddle and the four Rosetta drones, such as the Rosetta Gathering Drone.
- Energy Links income. Gold Ingots exist mostly to be sold. Merchants buy them for Energy Links, and Energy Links are the game's working currency for crafting, shops and player trades.
- Isles of Abyss tech. Skyfire Gold is a separate resource that feeds the new scenario's ship and automation upgrades. It isn't just regular gold with a new name.
The quick reference:
| Resource | Where it comes from | Main use | Scenario |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Ore | Mining nodes; some loot drops | 52 crafting recipes; smelting into ingots | All maps |
| Gold Ingot | 30 Gold Ore at an Electric Furnace; occasionally found while exploring | Selling for Energy Links; player trading | All scenarios (unlock rules differ) |
| Skyfire Gold | Mining Skyfire meteors on Falling Ember | Alloy ship structures, automated gathering facilities | Isles of Abyss only |
Where to find Gold Ore in Once Human
Gold Ore is a common map node, not a rare drop. You just have to be on the right part of the map. The th.gl community map, last updated October 26, 2026, lists at least 5,700 known Gold Ore nodes across six maps:
| Map | Known Gold Ore nodes | Best areas |
|---|---|---|
| Endless Dream | 2,700+ | Chalk Peak – Moonlake Area, Blackheart Region – Eastern Mining Area |
| Manibus and Evolution's Call | 1,700+ | Red Sands (730+), Blackheart Region (680+), Chalk Peak |
| The Way of Winter | 770+ | Ember Strand – Fallen Ashes, Land of Shadows, Fire Throat |
| Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve | 320+ | Paradise Hinterland, Unfrozen Port Area |
| Isles of Abyss | 70+ | Falling Ember (60+), Misty Marsh (2) |
| Prismverse's Clash | 40+ | Blackfell contest areas |
Those counts come from a fan-run map, not from Starry Studio, so treat them as "known so far" rather than a complete census. That's especially true for Isles of Abyss, which has only been live for six days. The pattern is still useful. On Manibus, Red Sands and Blackheart Region together hold most of the known gold. In Isles of Abyss, almost all of it sits on Falling Ember, the volcanic island.
Two practical notes. First, the in-game item text on th.gl describes Gold Ore simply as "Unrefined Gold Ore". It has no crafting recipe, so you can only mine it or loot it. Second, th.gl notes that the Dream Zone Trace Box (Lv 40–60) always drops 1–3 Gold Ore. That's a small but reliable top-up if you're running Endless Dream.
How to smelt Gold Ore into Gold Ingots
The recipe is simple. What trips people up is the unlock.
- Recipe: 30 Gold Ore → 1 Gold Ingot, about 5 seconds per ingot.
- Where: any Electric Furnace. That includes the Hybrid Electric Furnace, the Stardust-Powered Electric Furnace and the Recycling Electric Furnace, plus the Scorcher Biomechanical (th.gl recipe data).
- The unlock (Memetic scenarios): smelting gold and silver requires the Precious Metal Refining Memetic specialization. The Once Human wiki lists it as a specialization offered at levels 20, 25, 30 and 35. Specializations are offered as a choice, so it isn't guaranteed to show up for you. That's why "I have 3,000 gold ore and can't do anything with it" is such a common complaint.
If Precious Metal Refining doesn't come up for you, you have three options. A teammate with the specialization can smelt your ore. You can sell the raw ore. Or you can spend it on the crafting recipes above, which don't need the specialization.
Can you make Gold Ingots in Isles of Abyss?
This is the part nobody has a clean answer to yet. Isles of Abyss doesn't use level-based progression. The dev blog says characters "start at max level" and that you "advance Tech by exploring the archipelago, collecting resources, and completing key challenges". The current in-game description of the Gold Ingot (as captured by th.gl) reads: "Explore the wilderness, or craft after unlocking in Tech Specialization." So in the Tech-driven scenario, the ingot recipe sits behind a Tech unlock rather than a Memetic pick.
What we can't confirm is which Tech node it is, or at what Tech level. Starry Studio hasn't published the Isles of Abyss tech tree. One player in the gold thread guessed that ingot smelting is simply disabled in Isles. Others report getting plenty of gold from meteors. Until the studio documents it, the safe advice is to open your Tech panel and search for the Gold Ingot formula. If it isn't listed, keep raw Gold Ore for crafting rather than hoarding it for smelting.
The Tech Level screen above, from the official dev blog, shows how the scenario gates progress. Tech Level 2 needs 4 techs unlocked in total, Level 3 needs 10, Level 4 needs 18, and it climbs to 63 techs by Level 8. Gear rarity, ocean facilities and the number of active Mod attributes all scale with Tech, so gold you can't smelt yet still has a job as crafting stock.
How much do Gold Ingots sell for?
Starry Studio has never published merchant buy prices, so take every number here as player-reported. The figure that's circulated since 2024 is 12,000 Energy Links per Gold Ingot and 6,000 per Silver Ingot, sold through the "Sell" tab at Supply merchants. Players also report that merchants limit how many Energy Links they pay out before restocking. They describe hitting that cap and then moving the rest of their ingots to a Vending Machine for other players.
Treat 12,000 as a 2024 reference point and check the Sell tab on your own server before you plan around it. Prices and caps can change between scenarios and patches. The Vending Machine route is fully supported, though. Materials are one of the categories players can trade, and Energy Links are the currency Vending Machine trades settle in. For the bigger picture on Energy Links income, see our Starchrom and Energy Links farming guide.
What is Skyfire Gold and how do you get it?
Skyfire Gold is the Isles of Abyss resource, and the official description is short. From the October 16 dev blog:
"Mining meteors yields Skyfire Gold and rare minerals, used for crafting alloy ship structures, automated gathering facilities, and more. The larger the meteor, the harder the mining, and the surrounding temperature returns to normal once mining is complete." — Once Human Development Team, Isles of Abyss dev blog, October 16, 2026
Here's how that plays out in practice.
- Go to Falling Ember. It's the active-volcano island in the middle of the archipelago, and it's the home of the Skyfire Haywire Zone. Our Haywire Zones guide covers all four zones.
- Wait for Skyfire. While it's active, meteors hit the island. They damage nearby players and buildings and keep heating the area around them.
- Mine the meteor. Bigger meteors take longer to mine and spawn Deviant enemies that guard them, so clear the guards first. Once a meteor is fully mined, the heat around it returns to normal.
- Manage the heat. The official counters are the Cooling Patch, which removes Heatstroke and lowers body temperature while consuming durability, and All-Weather Stew, which raises both cold and heat resistance.
Players are also reporting a bonus. In the same Reddit thread, one player said big meteorites can leave behind a "golden meteor" once you've mined them down. They said "not all have it" and that one Skyfire event can be worth "few hundreds to few thousands gold". Another player said their base near a Phantasmal pollution area "spawns gold sometimes". Neither claim is in the official notes. Both match what you'd expect from the dev blog's "Skyfire Gold and rare minerals" wording, but treat them as community tips, not guarantees.
Can you automate Skyfire Gold?
Yes, later in the scenario. The dev blog says: "As you unlock related Tech, you can also gradually begin automatic mining of special resources." GameSpot's Haywire Zones guide adds that once you unlock Skyfire Gold Mining Technology, you can use a Mining Platform to produce it continuously. That explains the Reddit report about a platform offering a "special gold that isn't unlocked yet". It's the Skyfire Gold option, and it unlocks through Tech, not through a level.
What do you build with Skyfire Gold?
The official uses are alloy ship structures and automated gathering facilities. Both are mid-to-late scenario upgrades.
Ships are both your vehicle and a movable water territory in Isles of Abyss. The dev blog lists wood, iron, steel and alloy as the hull material tiers. Alloy is the top tier, and Skyfire Gold is what gates it. If your ship is still wooden or iron, that's where your first Skyfire Gold should go. For the full build path from raft to alloy hull, see our Isles of Abyss ship building guide.
Automated gathering is the long-term payoff. A Mining Platform that produces Skyfire Gold continuously means you stop chasing meteors on a hot volcano. That frees your time for the Phase II content, like Calamity Tower: Abyss and the Sunken Lord. Our Calamity Tower guide covers what that content asks of your ship.
What about the "Meteoric gold drill"?
A second Reddit thread from October 26 asked about a Meteoric gold drill, a drill option one player found while looking at upgrades for their solar drill. They'd been farming drill heads on Falling Ember's beaches with no luck. The replies were mixed. One player said they got it twice from drill heads and advised farming "in lvl 50 zone". Another said they looted it from a container in the settlement next to the volcano. A third had one but wasn't sure where it came from.
Starry Studio hasn't documented this item or its drop sources, and we won't quote a drop rate nobody has published. The useful takeaways are that it seems to drop on or around Falling Ember, and that auto-dismantle can destroy it. One player said they "accidently auto dismantled it". Check your auto-dismantle filters before a long farming run.
Does your gold carry over when the scenario ends?
It depends on which gold. Under the standard rules, materials and crafted items move into Eternaland at the end of a scenario. You can pull them into a new scenario by spending Supply Points, which caps how much you can bring. Isles of Abyss has its own exception, though. Items marked "Realm-exclusive" can't be taken out after the scenario ends. We haven't been able to confirm whether Skyfire Gold carries that tag, so plan to spend it inside Isles of Abyss on ship and automation upgrades instead of banking it.
Timing matters too. Isles of Abyss runs about 21 days: Phase I lasts roughly 5–10 days (shorter as server-wide purification advances), and Phase II lasts 11 days. The dev blog also notes that "as the scenario phase progresses, Haywire Zones will also change". The Isles of Abyss permanent server is expected on November 18, 2026 (PT), per the studio's October 20 server-schedule post. For everything else that carries over or resets, see what carries over between scenarios.
Best way to farm gold in Once Human (2026 summary)
- On Manibus or Evolution's Call: mine Red Sands and Blackheart Region. Bring a high-tier pickaxe or drill, and smelt with Precious Metal Refining if you have it or a teammate does.
- On Endless Dream: stick to Chalk Peak – Moonlake and the Blackheart eastern mining area, and open every Dream Zone Trace Box you pass.
- On Isles of Abyss: base near Falling Ember. Mine its Gold Ore nodes between Skyfire events, then mine the meteors during them. Clear the Deviant guards first and carry Cooling Patches.
- Selling: use merchants until they hit their payout cap, then a Vending Machine.
- Don't buy gold or Energy Links from third-party sites. Trading in Once Human is server-bound, and unofficial sellers put your account at risk.
FAQ
Is gold useless in Once Human? No, though it can feel that way without the right unlock. Gold Ore is an ingredient in 52 recipes, including the Lv. 2 Turret and the Rosetta drones. Gold Ingots are a strong Energy Links earner. If you can't smelt, use the ore for crafting or trade it to someone who can.
How do I unlock Gold Ingots in Once Human? In the Memetic scenarios (Manibus, The Way of Winter and the rest), you need the Precious Metal Refining specialization. It's offered at levels 20, 25, 30 or 35, and you smelt at an Electric Furnace (30 ore per ingot). In Isles of Abyss, the in-game text says the formula unlocks through Tech Specialization.
Where is the best gold in Isles of Abyss? Falling Ember. The community map lists 60+ of the 70+ known Isles Gold Ore nodes there, and it's the only island where Skyfire meteors fall.
What is Skyfire Gold used for? The official uses are alloy ship structures and automated gathering facilities. It comes from mining meteors during Skyfire weather on Falling Ember. After you unlock Skyfire Gold Mining Technology, a Mining Platform can produce it continuously.
Why does my mining platform show a gold I can't mine? That's almost certainly the Skyfire Gold option. It stays locked until you unlock the matching Tech in Isles of Abyss. Keep progressing Tech through exploration, resource collection and key challenges like Calamity Towers.
Is Isles of Abyss on PS5 and Xbox? Yes. It launched on October 21, 2026 (PT) on every platform, including PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S, PC and mobile. The official notes describe gold, Skyfire meteors and Tech once for all platforms, with no console-specific version. See how to join Isles of Abyss on PS5 and Xbox.
