Quick answer: Since October 27, 2026, a lot of Once Human players on PS5, Xbox and PC with a controller can't rotate pieces in Build Mode. The on-screen guide now shows L2 + R2 (LT + RT) for rotation, and pressing it does nothing. The old R2/RT + D-pad combo now opens the skin selector instead, and the D-pad no longer raises or lowers foundations. The studio hasn't acknowledged it yet. The Version 3.1.1 Bug Fixes (October 27) post lists seven fixes and none of them touch controller building. The workarounds that work today: use a mouse (on PC the mouse wheel still rotates, and PS5 and Xbox accept a keyboard and mouse, with custom keybinds added in 3.1.1), hold off on detailed building, and report it through the Feedback Platform so it's counted.
This is the biggest building complaint since Isles of Abyss launched. In about 24 hours, r/OnceHumanOfficial got at least seven separate threads about it in English and German. One PS5 player summed it up: "After the latest mini patch, it became impossible to rotate objects along their axis. The controls have changed; now it's shown that R2 and L2 are responsible for rotation, but pressing them doesn't allow you to rotate anything." This guide covers what changed, what's confirmed and what isn't, what you can do right now, and how to tell when it's fixed. It's checked against the official 3.1.1 Bug Fixes (October 27) post and the Version 3.1.1 update announcement, as of October 28, 2026, 04:00 UTC.
What exactly is broken in Build Mode?
The reports line up closely, which is a good sign this is a real bug and not a settings mix-up. Here's what players describe, grouped by symptom:
| Symptom | What players see | Platforms reported |
|---|---|---|
| Rotation does nothing | Button guide shows L2 + R2 / LT + RT; pressing them doesn't rotate the piece | PS5, Xbox, PC (controller) |
| Old combo hijacked | R2/RT + D-pad left/right, which used to rotate, now cycles skins/variants | PS5, Xbox |
| No height control | D-pad up/down no longer raises or lowers foundations | PS5, Xbox, PC (controller) |
| Wrong first screen | Placing a piece for the first time opens skin selection instead of placement | Not specified (Manibus base) |
| Mode switching stuck | Can't switch the right-hand view modes (for example, the power-supply view) | Not specified (German-language report) |
| No flip or mirror | No way to flip or mirror objects | Not specified |
Two details matter here. First, players on default controls are affected. Several say they never touched their bindings, and one wrote that "controls are standard in options." Second, it hits every character. One player said they couldn't rotate "any of my structures or facilities at my base on any of my characters." So this isn't about one server, one scenario or one saved layout. It's the controller input layer for Build Mode.
It also isn't limited to Isles of Abyss. Reports come from Manibus bases as well as Isles of Abyss ship builds.
When did the rotation bug start?
The first threads appeared on October 27, 2026, from about 17:00 UTC. That's the same day the studio pushed the 3.1.1 Bug Fixes (October 27) batch, which the official post says was "expected to be fixed by 05:00 PT" (12:00 UTC). Players call it "the latest mini patch," and one wrote: "Yesterday when I was building the button combo for rotating things was RT+Left/Right. But today it's RT+LT and doesn't work at all."
Here's what that October 27 post actually lists. It has seven fixes:
- Vending machine shelves withdrawing non-selected items.
- Territory design layouts not working on mobile.
- The Advanced Trawl having difficulty snapping.
- Game crashes in certain situations.
- Abnormal Alpha Elite respawn times in Isles of Abyss: RaidZone.
- The Drilling Well not gathering right away in a crude oil area.
- Automatic gathering in the third Haywire Zone failing during Black Tide.
Two of those touch building (items 2 and 3). None mention controller bindings, rotation or the button guide. The timing fits the hotfix, but the studio hasn't linked the two, and we won't claim it did. What we can say: the change arrived server-side or in a small client update on October 27, with no patch note describing it.
Is it a bug or did they change the controls on purpose?
Almost certainly a bug, or at least a half-shipped change. Three reasons:
- The new prompt doesn't work. If L2 + R2 were the intended new rotation input, pressing it would rotate. It doesn't, on PS5 or Xbox.
- No patch note announces it. The studio documents control changes when it makes them on purpose. The 3.1.1 update announcement spelled out every new controller binding it shipped. For example, it moved recycle to RB + A on Xbox and R1 + X on PlayStation and made hold D-pad down open the Function Wheel while driving. Nothing like that exists for Build Mode rotation.
- Height and flip broke too. A deliberate remap of rotation wouldn't also remove raise/lower and mirroring.
A PC player using a controller made the same guess: "It's as if they tried to make it simpler by just using triggers to rotate left and right instead of holding one and using the dpad, it's just that neither button does anything now." That's a reasonable read, but it's a player's theory, not an official explanation.
How do I rotate in Build Mode right now?
There's no controller-only fix yet. These are the options that actually help, best first.
1. Use a mouse (PC)
If you're on PC with a controller, switch to keyboard and mouse for building. The same PC player confirmed that "I can just switch to my mouse and use the wheel to rotate." On PC, the official 3.0.2 notes (July 22, 2026) also give you Shift + mouse wheel to switch snap points on walls, ceilings, roofs, stairs and pillars. That's handy for lining pieces up while the controller is broken. Swap back to the pad when you're done building.
2. Plug in a keyboard and mouse (PS5 and Xbox)
This is the best bet on console, with one caveat. Once Human on PS5 and Xbox already accepted a keyboard and mouse, and Version 3.1.1 (October 21, 2026) officially "Added custom keyboard and mouse keybind support on consoles." A PS5 player reports that a Logitech keyboard and mouse on a USB receiver both work in Once Human. They noted the keyboard only registered properly once a mouse was connected too.
The caveat: we haven't confirmed that mouse rotation works in console Build Mode, and nobody has reported it either way yet. It's worth a two-minute test if you have a USB or wireless keyboard and mouse. If it works, you can build with the mouse and play with the controller. Our Once Human mouse and keyboard on PS5 and Xbox guide covers setup.
3. Check your own bindings once, then stop
If you've ever customised controller bindings, restore the defaults once to rule out your own setup. Don't spend long on it. Players on untouched default controls have the same bug, and one wrote they'd "tried everything I could find but nothing worked." Our best controller settings for PS5 and Xbox walks through the controller menus. Note that 3.1.1 folded the sensitivity and vibration settings into a collapsible menu, so some options now sit behind a "+".
4. Pause precision building
Walls, floors and simple facilities that don't need rotating can still go down. Leave anything orientation-sensitive until the fix lands, like stairs, roof pieces, ship decks and furniture you want facing a certain way. In particular, don't demolish and rebuild pieces to try to get a different angle. You'll spend materials and still get the default orientation.
5. Report it so it counts
Volume matters. The studio's bug-fix posts single out a "Notice on Frequently Reported Issues" section, as it did on October 23 for the Calamity Owl and crocodile-pattern bugs. Use the official routes:
- Console: the Feedback Platform, which is where the 3.1.1 notes say console bug reports should go.
- PC: ESC → Support & Feedback → Submit Suggestion.
- Mobile: map left-side menu → headphones icon at the bottom right → Suggestions → Submit Suggestion.
- Offline: email oncehuman@global.netease.com.
Include your platform, that you're on default controls, and the exact prompt you see (L2 + R2 or LT + RT). Specific reports get triaged faster.
When will the build mode rotation bug be fixed?
No date yet. As of October 28, 2026, 04:00 UTC, there's no acknowledgement on oncehuman.game or the Steam news feed. But the studio has been moving fast on 3.1.1 issues:
- It has posted four bug-fix batches in six days: October 22, 23, 26 and 27.
- Most listed fixes were marked live the same day they were posted.
- Issues that need client changes wait for the next version update. The October 23 post pushed a crocodile-pattern fix to that update "(November 5)" because it involves model changes.
A broken input mapping is usually a configuration fix, not a model change. That makes it a good candidate for a same-week hotfix rather than a November 5 wait. That's our expectation, not a promise from the studio. Check the Once Human patch notes and our server maintenance and status guide for when the next update and its downtime land.
How you'll know it's fixed: the bug-fix post will name Build Mode, rotation or controller key prompts. In game, the old R2/RT + D-pad rotation (or a working replacement) will turn the piece, and D-pad up/down will move foundations again.
Does this affect Isles of Abyss ship building?
Yes, and that's where it hurts most. Ships are built in the same Build Mode, so hull plates, decks and deck facilities all need rotating. Several reports come from players mid-way through ship projects. One wrote, "I want to build my crazy ship."
Two related Isles fixes did ship on October 27, and they're easy to confuse with this bug:
- "Fixed an issue where the Advanced Trawl had difficulty snapping." That's a snapping fix for one ship facility, not a rotation fix.
- "Fixed an issue where territory design layouts couldn't be interacted with on mobile devices." That one is mobile-only.
If you're building a ship this week, a mouse is the practical way through. You can also sail and fight in the ship you already have. Rotation only matters while you're placing pieces. For the bigger picture on hull tiers and layouts, see our Isles of Abyss ship building guide.
What were the controller Build Mode controls before October 27?
The studio doesn't publish a full Build Mode controller map. Based on how players describe the setup that worked until October 26:
- Rotate a piece: hold R2 / RT and press D-pad left or right.
- Raise or lower a foundation: D-pad up or down while placing.
- Skins/variants: cycled from a separate prompt. Since October 27, the old rotate combo opens skins instead.
On PC, the mouse wheel rotates, and since 3.0.2, Shift + mouse wheel switches snap points. On mobile, there's an on-screen switch snap point button. If the fix restores the old scheme, these are the inputs you'll get back. If the studio is moving rotation to the triggers on purpose, expect a patch note saying so.
For mobile builders: an iPad player asked about moving the demolish button in Build Mode after hitting it by accident. That's a separate layout complaint, not part of this bug. Mobile has a custom layout option, but that player couldn't find the demolish button in it.
Is it worth building right now if you're new?
Yes, just keep it simple. New PS5 and Xbox players are arriving with Isles of Abyss. You can still put down a working base with this bug: foundations, walls, a roof, crafting benches and storage. The default orientation is fine for most of those. Save the decorative and multi-level work for after the fix. Our Once Human base building guide for beginners has a layout that works without fine rotation. If the game is misbehaving in other ways, the Once Human console errors and crashes fix guide covers the common ones.
FAQ
Why can't I rotate in Once Human build mode on PS5? Since October 27, 2026, the controller rotation input in Build Mode stopped working for many players. The prompt shows L2 + R2, which does nothing, and the old R2 + D-pad combo now opens skin selection. It's a bug on the game's side, not your settings, and it affects Xbox and PC controllers too.
What is the new button to rotate in Once Human on Xbox? The on-screen guide shows LT + RT, but it doesn't currently rotate anything. RT + D-pad left/right, which used to rotate, now cycles skins. There's no working controller input for rotation until the studio ships a fix.
Can I fix the Once Human rotation bug myself? Not on a controller. Resetting bindings doesn't help players who were already on defaults. The workaround is a mouse: on PC the mouse wheel still rotates, and PS5 and Xbox accept a keyboard and mouse, with custom keybinds since Version 3.1.1 (October 21, 2026). We haven't confirmed that mouse rotation works in console Build Mode, so test it.
Has the studio acknowledged the build mode bug? Not as of October 28, 2026, 04:00 UTC. The October 27 bug-fix post lists seven fixes, including an Advanced Trawl snapping fix and a mobile design-layout fix, but nothing about controller rotation. Report it through the Feedback Platform on console or ESC → Support & Feedback on PC.
Can I still raise or lower foundations with a controller? Not right now. The same October 27 change stopped D-pad up/down from adjusting foundation height for many controller players. A mouse is the only reliable way to place height-sensitive pieces until it's fixed.
Will I lose my base or ship because of this? No. Nothing you've already built is affected. The bug only changes how new pieces are placed. Avoid demolishing pieces to try to get them to rotate, because that spends materials for nothing.
