Once Human Beast Riding Explained (Sept 16 Update): How to Summon, Ride & Command Animals Now

Beast Riding went live in the September 16, 2026 update (Version 3.0.6). Beastmasters can now summon animals straight from the backpack or hotbar, mount deer, boars, bears and wild buffalo, and command beast partners with a single merged Beast Whistle. The catch every player hit on day one: you can only summon 1 animal at a time until the September 28 update, which raises the limit back to 3. This guide explains exactly how summoning, riding, commanding and the reworked ranching system work now — verified against the official 3.0.6 patch note.

Quick answer: what changed on September 16

  • Summoning is now item-based. Put an animal item in your backpack or hotbar and use it to summon that animal; use it again to recall. There is a 10-second shared cooldown.
  • You can summon 1 animal at a time from Sept 16, going back to 3 on Sept 28. The devs planned to cut Beastmasters to a single pet, walked it back after community feedback, but the 3-animal limit only re-activates with the September 28 update.
  • Riding is real now. Beastmasters mount rideable animals; with a saddle you ride stably and can shoot, melee, gather and use consumables while mounted.
  • The three old Beast Whistles merged into one. The whistle no longer summons — it only issues commands (combat, gathering) to your beast partners.
  • Ranching lost Tameness and Hydration. Growth, breeding, byproducts and slaughter yields are now governed by a single Energy stat.
  • Rideable animals right now: Deer, Boar, Bear and Wild Buffalo. More are coming.
This applies to all platforms — PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series XS, PC and mobile — since Once Human shares cross-platform servers. The update also shipped Gardener combat tweaks, a permanent-server merge plan and the Isles of Abyss Pioneer Test, but Beast Riding is the headline, and it is the single most-asked-about change on the official subreddit this week.

How to summon animals now (the new backpack rule)

The old system tied summoning to a specific colored Beast Whistle. That is gone. As the official patch note puts it:

"Metas can use animal items directly from their backpack or hotbar to summon the corresponding animal; using the animal item again will recall the animal (summoning animals has a 10-second shared cooldown)."

So the flow is:

  • Open your backpack (or place the animal item on your hotbar for one-tap access).
  • Use the animal item to summon that animal into the world.
  • Use it again to recall the animal back into the item.
  • Wait out the 10-second shared cooldown before summoning or recalling again.

One player on r/OnceHumanOfficial summed up the new muscle memory: "I put the animal back in my backpack, then put it in the hotbar and summoned it from there." Moving your animals to the hotbar is the fastest way to summon and swap them mid-session, and it frees the whistle slots you no longer need.

Summoning conditions to know:

  • Only adult animals with more than 20% Energy can be summoned. A starving or juvenile animal will not come out.
  • Summoned animals default to an idle (waiting-to-mount) state — they will not fight until you command them.
  • Each time an animal dies, it loses some Energy, so reckless combat drains the stat you now depend on.
  • Non-Beastmaster classes can summon animals that have a saddle equipped for riding in the open world, but not inside dungeons or during combat, and their summoned animals have no combat ability.

Why you can only summon 1 animal until September 28

This is the number-one source of confusion right now, so here is the exact timeline straight from the studio.

The devs originally announced that each Beastmaster would be limited to one summoned animal at a time going forward. After what the patch note calls "a large amount of feedback from Metas in the community," they reversed the decision — Beastmasters keep the 3-animal limit. But there is a gap:

  • September 16 → September 28 (PT): Because of "version development and testing schedules," Beastmasters can summon only 1 animal at a time during this window.
  • After the September 28 update (PT): The limit is raised so Beastmasters can summon 3 animals simultaneously. (Non-Beastmaster classes stay capped at 1.)

The studio issued a rare direct apology for the whipsaw: "this is the result of our previous plan's lack of foresight. We offer our sincere apologies to all Metas." So if you logged in on the 16th and found yourself down to a single pet, nothing is broken — it is a temporary restriction that clears on September 28, 2026.

Riding: bareback vs saddle

Beast Riding has two modes, and the difference is significant.

Bareback riding. Walk up to an unoccupied wild animal — or summon one without a saddle — and mount it through the interaction prompt. Bareback riding consumes character Stamina, and you cannot mount when Stamina is too low. Worse, the animal resists you: its max stamina is limited, its special abilities are locked, and it constantly tries to break free. Treat bareback as an emergency ride, not a travel plan.

Saddle riding. Equip a Basic Saddle and everything smooths out. You can drag the saddle onto the animal, equip it in the animal's details screen, or slap it on while the animal is anesthetized (tranquilized). With a saddle you ride stably, and — this is the fun part — you can fire weapons, perform melee attacks, gather, interact, use consumables, and use Deviation abilities while mounted, all without special animations. Only actions with their own animation (opening a weapon crate, teleporting, switching worlds) will dismount you.

Mount abilities. With a saddle on, a Beastmaster can trigger the animal's special ability while riding:

  • PC: Ctrl key
  • Console: R1 + X (PlayStation) / RB + A (Xbox)
  • Mobile: the dedicated on-screen button

Non-Beastmaster classes can ride saddled animals but cannot use the special abilities — those are a Beastmaster-only payoff. The animals supported for riding at launch are Deer, Boar, Bear and Wild Buffalo, with more promised in future updates.

What the Beast Whistle does now

If you opened your inventory after the patch and wondered why your red whistle suddenly seems useless, you are not alone. A player asked exactly that: "I have no idea what my red whistle is for now."

Here is the answer. The three old Beast Whistles have been merged into a single "Beast Whistle." It no longer summons anything — summoning is item-based now. The whistle's only job is to command your summoned beast partners: telling them to fight, gather, or perform specific actions.

A few important details:

  • The whistle is no longer bound to a specific animal. One whistle commands whatever you have out.
  • The old red whistle is renamed to "Beast Whistle" and kept. The other two old whistle types are not auto-removed — you can actively use them to convert them into the new Beast Whistle.
  • The update did not mass-recall old whistles or mass-distribute new ones, so check your inventory and convert manually.
  • Beastmasters learn the new whistle's crafting formula by default.
  • A summoned animal stays in a waiting-to-mount state and only starts assisting after you issue a command via the whistle. You cannot command an animal more than 10 levels above your own.

The reworked ranching system: Energy is everything now

Alongside Beast Riding, the September 16 update gutted the busywork out of ranching. Previously you juggled Tameness, Energy and Hydration — three overlapping bars that made animal care a chore. After 3.0.6:

  • Tameness and Hydration are removed entirely.
  • Energy is now the single stat that governs growth, breeding, byproduct production and slaughter yields.
  • The old "Docile" trait (tied to Tameness) loses its effect and is replaced with a trait that increases youngling growth speed.
  • Mixed Meat Feed, Mixed Grain Feed and Mixed Herb Feed now only raise Energy.
  • Trait attributes unlock at animal levels 20, 30, 40 and 50 (already-unlocked traits are unaffected).

The official Energy tiers spell out why keeping animals well-fed matters:

80% – 100% Energy: efficient byproduct production, large slaughter supplies, normal growth, breedable. 20% – 80% Energy: normal byproduct production, moderate supplies, normal growth, not ready to breed. 0% – 20% Energy: byproduct production and growth pause, small slaughter supplies, not breedable.

In short: if you want animals that grow, produce and breed steadily, keep Energy above 80%. The animal list also now shows Energy, Courtship and Breeding Cooldown icons so you can read a pen at a glance instead of opening each animal.

Commanding beast partners in combat

Once an animal is summoned and saddle-equipped, the Beastmaster's kit opens up. When you approach an animal it won't flee or attack — you can read its thoughts, check its Stats and Traits, and issue Beast Whistle commands to send it into combat or gathering.

The Breeding Expert trait lets Beastmasters craft gene items to modify animal genes and grant unique traits, then push trait attribute levels higher through breeding and exploration. The update added 7 new attribute groups and adjusted 2 existing ones. One movement nuance worth knowing: an animal's mounted movement-speed bonus is a separate stat from its normal movement-speed bonus, so the default speed buff does not apply while you are riding — it still applies to animals assisting in combat and exploration.

And yes — saddled animals are tradeable. Beastmasters can craft and replace saddles and animal gear, then trade saddled animals to other players, which is a genuinely new layer to the game's player economy.

Do you have to carry animals around now?

A common complaint after the patch: carrying a summoned animal seems to eat your carry weight. Players flagged that even "a single buffalo or bear puts me over when I'm only at half encumbered." Two mechanics soften this:

  • Beastmasters get a weight reduction on animals (community testing put it around 70%).
  • There is an animal trait that increases your carry capacity while your animal is summoned.

If encumbrance is hurting you, lean on those and prioritize the carry-capacity trait when you breed. The devs already reversed the 1-animal limit after feedback, so if the weight cost stays painful, the official Discord feedback channel is the proven way to get it looked at.

FAQ

How do you summon animals in Once Human after the September 16 update? Place the animal item in your backpack or hotbar and use it to summon the animal; use the item again to recall it. There is a 10-second shared cooldown, and only adult animals above 20% Energy can be summoned. Summoning is no longer tied to a Beast Whistle.

Why can I only summon one animal now? From September 16 to September 28, 2026 (PT), Beastmasters are temporarily limited to 1 summoned animal at a time due to version stability. The September 28 update restores the 3-animal limit. The studio apologized for the interim restriction — it is intentional and temporary, not a bug.

What is the Beast Whistle for now? The three old whistles merged into one "Beast Whistle" that only commands your summoned beast partners (combat, gathering) — it no longer summons them. Your old red whistle was renamed and kept; the other old whistles can be converted into the new one.

Which animals can you ride in Once Human? As of the September 16 update, the rideable animals are Deer, Boar, Bear and Wild Buffalo. More types are planned. You can ride bareback (costs Stamina, animal resists) or, better, with a Basic Saddle equipped for stable riding and full weapon use.

Did ranching change too? Yes. Tameness and Hydration were removed, and a single Energy stat now governs growth, breeding, byproducts and slaughter yields. Keep animals above 80% Energy to breed and produce efficiently. Feeds now only restore Energy.

Can non-Beastmasters ride animals? Yes, but only saddled animals in the open world — not in dungeons or combat — and they cannot use the animal's special abilities. Those mount abilities are Beastmaster-only.
