Once Human How to Play With Friends on PS5, Xbox & PC (2026): Add Friends, Join a Team & Fix the Server Mismatch

Once Human squad of survivors playing co-op together in the open world — up to four players in a team on PS5, Xbox and PC after the 2026 console launch.

If you just installed Once Human on PS5 or Xbox and cannot figure out how to actually play with your friends — you added them, you can see their name, but you never spawn into the same world — you are not doing anything wrong. This is the single most common source of confusion for new console players since the August 25, 2026 launch (11:00 PT / August 26 in EU and Asia). The game hides one critical rule that no menu explains clearly: being friends is not enough — you have to be on the same Region, the same Server, and the same World before you can team up. That last one, the World, is where almost everyone gets stuck.

This guide walks through the whole thing in order: how to add a friend across PS5, Xbox and PC, how to make sure you land on the same server before you create a character, how to fix the "we're friends but can't see each other" problem with a World Stone, and how to invite each other into a Team so you can build, fight and farm together. Everything below is checked against the official `oncehuman.game` Console Launch FAQ and is current as of update 3.0.5 (September 3, 2026).

Quick answer: how to play with friends in Once Human

To play together in Once Human, both players must be on the same Region, the same Server, and the same World, then add each other under Social and invite each other to a Team (max 4 players). Crossplay is on by default, so PS5, Xbox, PC and mobile players can all party up — as long as they picked the same cross-platform server. The steps:

  • Before anyone makes a character, agree on one Region and one Server. Servers are chosen at character creation and you cannot freely hop between them later, so this is the step that matters most.
  • Join an untagged cross-platform server if you're on different platforms (PS5 + PC, Xbox + mobile, etc.). Servers marked 【Console】 are console-only and PC/mobile friends cannot follow you there.
  • In-game, open Social → search your friend's ID → Add Friend, then Invite to Team (or they use Request to Join).
  • Still can't see each other on the same server? You're in different Worlds. Walk to a World Stone (a.k.a. Teleportation Tower), interact with it, and switch to the same World shown in your friend's top-right corner.
  • A Team holds up to 4 players. To play as a larger group, join the same Hive (settlement group) as well.

The one-line version: same Region → same Server → same World → add friend → Invite to Team. Miss any of the first three and no amount of inviting will work.

Is Once Human crossplay? Can PS5 play with Xbox and PC?

Yes. Once Human has full crossplay across every platform, confirmed by Starry Studio in its official Console Launch FAQ:

"PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S are supported. After the console version launches, full cross-platform play will be supported with the already-released PC/mobile versions. Players can add each other as friends, team up, and play together across platforms."

So a PS5 player and an Xbox player can squad up, and either can play with a friend on PC (Steam) or mobile (iOS/Android). Three things to know before you count on it:

  • You do not need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play. Per the same official FAQ, the game is free on console and no subscription is required to play online. (A PS Plus or Game Pass subscription only grants extra cosmetic rewards.)
  • Crossplay only works on a cross-platform server. These are the untagged servers. Once Human also runs a separate 【Console】-tagged server pool that is console-exclusive — if you and a PC friend want to play together, you both need to be on an untagged server, not a 【Console】 one.
  • Region still matters. Crossplay is within a region. A North American server and a European server are separate shards even though both support crossplay, so pick the same region too.

How to add friends in Once Human (PS5, Xbox & PC)

Adding a friend is done in-game, using their Once Human character ID — not through the PlayStation or Xbox friends list. The flow is the same on every platform:

  • Open the menu (Options/Menu on controller, Esc on PC).
  • Go to the Social tab (sometimes labelled People / friends icon).
  • Use the search bar and type your friend's in-game ID exactly, or their numeric player ID.
  • Select their profile and choose Add Friend. They accept from their own Social menu.

Two shortcuts once you're actually near each other in the world:

  • Stand next to your friend, open their character, and you can send a friend request or a team invite straight from their profile.
  • If your friend's profile shows a Special Invitation Code and the server is full, that code is how they get you onto their server — see the World/server section below.

A common mix-up on console: the codes you see in the platform party system (a PlayStation lobby code vs an Xbox one) are not Once Human server identifiers. One returning player on r/OnceHumanOfficial summed it up this week: "PlayStation has different lobby codes than Xbox, making it impossible to know which server we are in." Ignore the console party codes for matchmaking — what matters is the Region, Server and World you each picked inside Once Human.

The step everyone misses: same Region, same Server, same World

Here is the rule the game never spells out, and the reason your friend list looks fine but you're playing alone: Once Human is split into Region → Server → World, and you must match all three.

  • Region — NA, SA, EU, Japan, Korea, HK/MO/TW. Chosen when you first create a character. Different regions are completely separate; you cannot team across them.
  • Server — within a region there are many servers, each running a scenario (Manibus, The Way of Winter, etc.). You pick one at character creation. Each server is capped between 6,000 and 8,000 players, so a full one can only be joined with an invitation code.
  • World — this is the hidden one. A single server is split into several parallel Worlds (shown in your top-right corner, e.g. "NormalWorld 1"). You and your friend can be on the exact same server and still not see each other because you're in different Worlds.

Do this before anyone commits to a character: agree on one Region and one Server. Because servers are chosen at creation and you can't casually swap later, the cleanest approach when a friend is already playing is:

  • Have your friend check their Region, Server name, and World (World is top-right in-game).
  • On a fresh install, go through the tutorial, and when the game lets you choose a server, pick the same Region and same Server as your friend. (Some players skip the tutorial on a second character to reach server selection faster.)
  • If the server shows full, get a Special Invitation Code from your friend (from their in-game profile → View Special Invitation Code) and enter it — a full server can only be joined with a code.

Getting the Region and Server right up front saves you from the far more annoying problem of being stuck on the wrong shard.

"We're friends but can't see each other" — fix it at a World Stone

If you and your friend are on the same server but still can't find each other, you are almost certainly in different Worlds. This is fixed in under a minute:

  • Ask your friend which World they're in — it's the label in their top-right corner (e.g. "NormalWorld 2").
  • Walk to a World Stone, also called a Teleportation Tower — one of the tall interactable towers on the map.
  • Interact with it (press the confirm/context button, e.g. Circle on PlayStation) and select change World.
  • Switch to the same World your friend is in. You can change Worlds at any World Stone, at any time, at no cost.

That's the whole fix. As one player explained it to a confused newcomer on r/OnceHumanOfficial: "At the top right of your screen in-game it will say NormalWorld 1 for example. Go to a World Stone and change to the same one as your friends." Once you share the same World, you'll see each other on the map and can meet up.

Note this is not a server change and does not move your base — your territory stays where you built it. You're just swapping which parallel copy of the map you're loaded into.

How to invite friends to a Team (and the difference between a Team and a Hive)

Once you're on the same Region, Server and World, teaming up is quick:

  • Open the menu → Social/Team.
  • Find your friend (add them first if you haven't).
  • Choose Invite to Team — or, standing near them, invite from their character profile. They can also use Request to Join on your profile.
  • Accept, and you're partied.

A Team caps at 4 players. That's your combat squad — shared quest progress on group content, revives, and coordinated fights. If your group is larger than four, or you want a shared settlement and warband, join the same Hive:

  • A Team is the temporary 4-player party for playing together right now.
  • A Hive is the larger persistent group (your warband/settlement community) — you invite friends to your Hive from the same Social menu, and a Hive can hold far more than four members. Many groups run one Hive plus multiple Teams of four inside it for big events.

For voice chat, most players coordinate over Discord rather than in-game voice, especially in a crossplay group where platform party chat won't bridge PS5, Xbox and PC.

Once Human co-op: what you can (and can't) do together

Once you're teamed up on the same World, here's what shared play actually looks like — and the limits worth knowing before you plan a session:

  • You explore the same world together and can fight world bosses, clear dungeons, and take on Deviations as a group.
  • Bases are personal territory. You can visit and help at a friend's base, but you each hold your own territory; there is no shared-ownership base by default. Coordinating base spots near each other is the usual workaround.
  • Trading between friends is supported — stand next to each other and trade, limited to the Tools, Consumables, Materials and Special item categories. Weapons and armor are not in the friend-trade list.
  • There is no split-screen or couch co-op. Playing "together" always means two consoles/PCs on the same server — one screen, two players on one console is not supported on PS5 or Xbox.
  • PvP scenarios (Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash) put teams and Hives against each other; make sure your group joins the same faction/side where the scenario asks.

FAQ

Can PS5 and Xbox players play Once Human together? Yes. Once Human has full crossplay, officially confirmed by Starry Studio: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series XS, PC and mobile players can add each other as friends and team up, provided they're all on the same untagged cross-platform server in the same region. Servers tagged 【Console】 are console-only and PC/mobile friends can't join those.

I added my friend but we can't see each other — why? You're on the same server but in different Worlds. Check the World label in your friend's top-right corner, go to any World Stone (Teleportation Tower), interact with it, and switch to the same World. You'll then see each other. If you're not even on the same server, you'll need to be on the same Region and Server first — that's set at character creation.

How many people can be in a Once Human team? A Team (party) holds a maximum of 4 players. For a larger group, everyone joins the same Hive (the persistent settlement/warband group), which holds many more members, and you run multiple 4-player Teams inside it.

Do I need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play Once Human with friends? No. The official Console Launch FAQ states the game is free to play and no subscription is required to play online. A PS Plus or Game Pass subscription only grants extra cosmetic rewards, not access.

How do I join a friend whose server is full? A full server (each caps at 6,000–8,000 players) can only be entered with a Special Invitation Code. Have your friend open their in-game profile, select View Special Invitation Code, and send it to you; enter it at server selection. The code is server- and region-specific and only works while that server is genuinely full.

Can I change servers to join my friend after I already made a character? Servers are chosen at character creation and you can't freely swap them the way you swap Worlds. The reliable way to join a friend on a different server is to make a new character on their Region and Server. If you're just in the wrong World on the same server, that's the free World Stone fix above.

Is there split-screen or couch co-op in Once Human on console? No. Once Human has no split-screen or same-console co-op on PS5 or Xbox. Every "play together" option requires each player on their own device, on the same server and World.
